The Konbart Zine 2024 Contributor Applications are now open! This nonprofit zine is a celebration of fanwork centering around pairing DC’s Superboy and Impulse. Please fill out this form if you’re interested in participating in the project—We’re taking all kinds of artists, including but not limited to digital artists, writers, fiber artists, sculptors, cosplayers and more! We would love to showcase your Konbart work.
Applicants do not need to include Konbart in their sample work, it is more important that you showcase your ability to show two (or more) characters interacting. Please keep in mind that the work must be your own, original work and not AI generated or copied from another source. All applicants should be 18 during the work period. If you are interested in the project but will be turning 18 after the application period, please contact either @nopes-and-dreams or @radioactive-earthshine so that we can discuss the possibility of your inclusion in the project at a later date.

Standees are freestanding, two dimensional figures. They’re often used on desks and tables. Keychains, in this context, are two dimensional acrylic objects that have a key ring attached and can be used to hopefully keep your keys together.

Hi! I am super excited for this zine!!!
I am not sure if you have answered this elsewhere, if you have I couldn’t find it, but I was wondering if there were a certain number of contributors you were looking for? Such as a certain number of contributors total, or a certain number of contributors per role?
Additionally, can potential contributors apply for more than one role (such as both writer and artist), and if so, can they be selected for multiple roles, or will they only be selected for one?
Finally, it is my understanding that further information about contributor applications will be released as a part of the application document. I understand if you cannot answer this, or if it will be answered later, but what are the main elements you are looking for in an application for each role? For example, are you looking for technical skill from artists, or are you looking more for creative ideas and ability to complete a piece within the time frame? Is there anything specific in an application that you are looking for, and is there anything specific that you would immediately turn down an application for or do not want to see in an application?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions, and again, I am so looking forward to this zine!!! I swear, it is living rent free in my head, I have been super excited for it since it was announced. Thank you for organizing the zine, I know a lot of hard work is going into this behind the scenes, and I appreciate it!!! <3
Mod Orla here! We're just as excited as you are!
As for your questions we are happy to answer them! Keep in mind, as with all Zines, all things are subject to change just depending on variable factors. This is a niche and a rare pair so there are some things that we cannot solidly say until we SEE the results and completed applications for ourselves.
1.) I was wondering if there were a certain number of contributors you were looking for? Such as a certain number of contributors total, or a certain number of contributors per role?
Answer: At this time, we do not have a set limit on contributors, or contributions - most Zines host around 30-40 contributors and our interest check supports this range. Once we get in our contributor applications we will have a better scope of how many pieces we can anticipate.
2.) ... can potential contributors apply for more than one role (such as both writer and artist), and if so, can they be selected for multiple roles, or will they only be selected for one?
Answer: We are definitely welcoming people to apply for multiple roles! Once your application is accepted and you are invited to participate in this Zine, we then will have open-pitches for what each contributor wants to contribute to the Zine which then will be approved/rejected. Keep in mind, we want our contributors to work on one piece at a time and to complete their piece before moving on to their approved additional piece. Writer/Artists may also have the ability to do their own comic, or illustrate a scene from their fic, or someone else's fic if they are open to do so.
3.) ... what are the main elements you are looking for in an application for each role? For example, are you looking for technical skill from artists, or are you looking more for creative ideas and ability to complete a piece within the time frame?
Answer: We are looking for enthusiasm, creativity and ability to create pieces centered on more than one person - we are not looking for Zine veterans or specific art/writing 'styles' but are most interested in the ability to create and finish pieces focused on two people that are cohesive and would translate well into the role(s) that the contributor is interested in. Ideally, we would want to see examples showing two people interacting in some way. For merch artists we are looking for art styles that would translate well into potential merchandise etc.
4.) ... is there anything specific that you would immediately turn down an application for or do not want to see in an application?
Answer: Any application that has content created with the use of AI or generated content will be immediately turned down. We will not accept AI "Artists/Writers" as contributors for this project.
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and questions!
Keep an eye out for the link for Contributor Applications coming tomorrow - March 11th!

what is a zine?
Orla here!
A "zine" in this sense is part of fanzine which is an unofficial collection of works compiled by fans, for other fans, to celebrate a shared fandom or interest.
Traditionally, fanzines have been physical collections of fanart or fanfiction in magazine or digest format, but since the digital age they have been also released as completely digital.
Sometimes, depending on the "zine project", they can include fan merchandise that is exclusive to the zine. The types of merchandise vary from project to project, but most often include things like; prints, keychains, pins, stickers or digital items like emoji packs or wallpapers.
Recently, due to amount of work put into compiling these zines and use of merch many of these zine projects have been charity-driven where all profits from sales of the zine go directly to a charity of choice.
For more about the long history of Fanzines you can read more on the Wikipedia article here.
And just for fun because I am curious.

For the artist application, the form states that you are looking for ‘artistic cohesion’ in the art examples provided. What does this mean? I am worried, because I have been experimenting with my art style a lot recently, and so my art from piece to piece looks very different, but within each piece I keep the style consistent. Does artistic cohesion mean you looking for artists to have a clear art style, or does it mean that you are looking for art pieces to be coherent and clear in what they are showing, or is it something else?
Thanks!!
Hi, thank you for your ask! We appreciate people taking the time to reach out about their questions and concerns for the zine. For the artist applications, we're looking to see that you can make art that shows a consistent quality--if you've been experimenting a lot, please go with work that most closely resembles work you would like to produce for the zine. We want to know what to expect!

Hello! 😊
I was wondering if it's necessary to include KonBart drawings in the portfolio when applying, or if drawings of individual characters would suffice. Or is it not a requirement?
Thank you very much!
Thanks for your question, we'll have specific guidance in the contributor application form about what we're looking for. You won't need to include KonBart work specifically, but it will be helpful to include samples where two or more characters are interacting. We want to see how you handle multiple characters on a page more than we need to see existing art for the ship. If you have any other questions, or need further clarification, feel free to send another ask or message @nopes-and-dreams

hii excited for this!!! do you guys have any idea on specs (like, how many people might be accepted, what applications will look like, word count limits for writers/illustration requirements for artists, or the approximate project schedule) yet?? i know it's early and the interest check is still up (...how long will the interest check be open?) and this is a lot of questions (SORRY) so if you can't actually answer that's totally fine but i thought i'd ask!!!
Orla here!
We are so excited as well, and thank you for your questions.
We are in the beginning stages of planning, and the answers to some of these questions cannot adequately be answered at this time until we get a better approximation on the true interest for this rare pair.
However, I can answer that the Interest check will be open until 3/10/24.
On 3/11/24 - 4/11/24 we will be accepting the contributor applications. These will most likely be through Google Forms and will request some basic information with link requests to previous finished pieces to show your talent.
We feel a month is ample time for everyone who might be interested in this zine to assess their schedules to determine if they they have time and ability to commit to contribute at least 1 finished piece in the near future.
As with most zines, we will not be expecting ANY complete piece upon completion and return of the application. Upon approval as a contributor and after piece approval then work on a piece should begin.
In the next two weeks we plan on having a functioning theme for our Tumblr site, an FAQ posted with more information, and a tentative schedule.
Until then please keep sharing the interest check and talking about Konbart!
