Asian Clothing Figurines Review
Asian Clothing: Japanese Kimono
Kimono Type: Furisode: Kofurisode
Accuracy Rating: 5/5
Explanation: Super cute casual look that seems to come straight out of the Meiji period! Beautiful green color with cream colored stripes is very elegant. Compliments the off-white frilly apron well, which is carefully worn over her taiko musubi! The black obi brings attention to dark green collar with white polka dots. It would normally be a sign that the design is off, but here it serves as a call-back to an Edo-period trend of black collars for working class people. Very nice!

some humanization sketches for drago, tigress/tigrerra, and phoenix/skyress. i was aiming to base their humanizations from the various myths they're inspired from while keeping some loose details of their canon forms to make them somewhat recognizable.
tigress is based off of the (white) tiger's importance to korea while phoenix is based off of east asian myths of the phoenix. the pattern on the kofurisode in particular is the paulownia tree/kiri, where the phoenix is said to live.
i took liberties with drago's design as his canon form is really just a european dragon. i decided that his design be southeast asian, partly because i'm seasian and partly because i want his tits/chest out 🙏 to make him more recognizable with the perfect core.

The look of... II: Tokyo-Akasaka
Historical Context The history of Akasaka as a Hanamachi starts in 1869, when it was established with 20 Geisha in three Okiya. In 1883, it was ranked as 24th lowest of 25 Hanamachi in Tokyo. During the Russo-Japanese war (1904/05), Akasaka's wealth grew: by 1906, there were 65 Okiya, the most famous ones being Harumoto 春本 and Hayashi-ya 林家, both with more than 12 Geisha each. The legacy of Harumoto lives on with present-day Okiya like Kazuharumoto 一春本 and Hisamomoharumoto 久桃春本. The number of Geisha and Hangyoku living there reached its peak in the late 1920's (1928: 425). In 1986 the last Akasaka Hangyoku of the 20th century debuted. In 2014, Sakura was the first of currently three Hangyoku of a new generation. In 2022, 21 Geisha work in Akasaka.

Notes Hangyoku are a rare thing in Akasaka. The first Hangyoku to debut since 1986 was Sakura (さくら) in 2014. I could find only one picture of her online of when she still was a Minarai. After her came Koume (小梅), who was active for three years (2016-18), but there aren't a lot of pictures of her online. Mameka (まめ夏), who debuted in 2018 and became a Geisha in 2021, graced us with her own instagram account, posting many pictures of her outfits, so she is basically my only source for "the look of Akasaka Hangyoku". Kikumaru is my only source for the way a Geisha is outfitted at debut. When Mameka debuted in October 2018, she wore a wig and continued to do so until February 2019. It also seems there isn't a uniform tradition revolving around Hangyoku debuts in this district. Koume wore Kofurisode, minimal hair decoration and had only her lower lip painted red. Mameka wore Chû-Furisode, normal hair decoration (as described above in "Kanzashi") and had both lips painted red. Regarding Kôken Musubi. It seems the difference between "normal" and "Jidai" Kôken Musubi are the folds in the middle of the upper edge

What kind of kimono do minarai wear? Kofurisode? The sleeves still seem a bit short, but too long for adult kimono. Tyvm!
It all depends on the district. For all of them they'll start off in a minarai kimono, which has kofurisode length sleeves but is a regular length kimono (so, non-hikizuri). Miyagawa Cho and Kamishichiken will wear this only for the first few days of introductions before switching over to the full maiko ensemble. Pontocho will wear this outfit for up to a few weeks before switching over to a maiko hikizuri (they'll still wear a minarai kanzashi). Gion Higashi wears a hikizuri right from the start and does not wear a minarai kimono whereas Gion Kobu will wear the minarai kimono for the entire length of the minarai period ^^

So, I'd like to take a moment and talk about how much I love Rin's design in the new Yashahime series. I especially love that she's wearing the undergarments for a kofurisode, the long sleeved kimono that SINGLE women wear. These garments became common in the mid 1500s and we're usually worn by middle class women. Lower class women didn't have the money for the extra fabric, and working class women didn't wear them, even if they did have the money, because they would get caught on everything. This is why Sango's daughter does not wear one, she wears an apron which denotes chores, and working.
Rin is wearing a casual one which, usually has sleeves that only hang about 30-33 inches. (Formal ones, which are called Furisodes, are 8-10 inches longer) In fact if you look at the picture of her and you were to do some math, you'd realize her sleeves hang about two and a half feet, which is the length of the hanging part of the sleeves of a kofurisode. And because she has a wealthy, aristocratic father figure who buys her clothes, it makes sense she would have something nicer than a lot of the other girls her age. I can't imagine they would include a kofurisode in Rin's design, unless they were trying to tell us something. It's particularly funny because, Japanese people especially will know what this is. It's almost like they were trying to tell us something, without telling us something. Like they were hinting about her marital status with subtle design elements. And before anyone wants to say "It's a coincidence!" or "It's that way because they're trying to make her look more flowy, because she's floating!", those sleeves have a cultural and historic meaning in Japan, and to the designers. Also, the animation that shows her sleeves flowing cost money, why spend it if it doesn't have a purpose?

Pink & red modern kofurisode! Taking photos for memories before I give these to a friend. The kimono on the right in both photos are for hakama, so the bottom halves are plain and unpatterned.

my take on skyress/phoenix humanisation 🍃 design/inspo rambling under the cut
i always envision a humanised!skyress to have a regal feel to her what with phrases like "green nobility" and "blow, winds of royalty" connected to her in-show. since shun's guardian bakugan are the only ones to have japanese abilities (and had bakugan only been one season as planned, only skyress would have them) i opted for a kimono. i still have to yet to draw her full-body, but i plan for a kofurisode + hakama like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
did some research on kimono patterns as well, and found the kiri/paulownia tree pattern. with the kiri tree connected to folklore about the phoenix, of course i had to use it for skyress:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus edo period art and clothing with kiri and phoenixes on them because i think they are v interesting and neat:

Asian Clothing: Japanese Kimono
Kimono Type: Furisode: Kofurisode
Accuracy Rating: 4.5/5
Explanation: Considering it’s One Piece, it’s actually really good! Everything checks all the boxes: collars, obiage, obi, obijime, obi musubi, ohashori, tabi, & zori. The pattern is terribly plain, but can’t find fault otherwise.

*INFORMATION.
BNHA VERSE // CLOTHES.
The Inoue clan requires its clan heads and their direct family to present themselves in a way that conveys their near noble lineage (and yakuza background); for every meeting, celebration, ceremony --- they are to dress in traditional formal attire. Minami really dislikes this, but even as the sole member of the ruling branch, she can’t argue against tradition... And she can’t deny the logic behind it, either. Reputation is half of the fight!
MAJOR OCCASIONS (FEMININE). As an unmarried young woman, she usually dons an intricate, dark chufurisode; its sleeves are tailored to be 127cm long, accounting for both her height and her status, the clan’s mon is stitched onto the back, and she wears zori sandals + tabi socks underneath. She wishes to eventually cause a scandal by having light-up sketchers instead...
Wearing a furisode to a meeting is a sign of closeness on Minami’s part, since it’s very restrictive to wear --- meaning that she is trusting you not to attack her while she’s in such a vulnerable state (especially considering her weakness for close combat). Dressing in a feminine manner also makes Minami’s shyness go absolutely apeshit, so wearing it takes effort.
MAJOR OCCASIONS (MASCULINE). When meeting with people she doesn’t trust or she fears, even if she does respect them (hence why she’s bothering to obey the elders and dress formally), Minami will wear a black montsuki kimono (sandals, tabi, haori and hakama included) as a very subtle ‘fuck you’ to the other party by refusing to pretty herself up. She usually has a few weapons hidden on her during these occasions.
MINOR OCCASIONS. When representing the family at minor, day-to-day or low consequence events, Minami wears a dark kofurisode matched with a hakama skirt. She sometimes wears comfortable modern shoes if the company is insignificant, and is known to hide money on her person for the clan children to try their luck at stealing.
CASUAL. Edgy e-girl fashion is the way to go babey! Minami takes care to hide her arms and legs to cover her scars, but the black tights/stockings she dons are infamous for being almost always ripped. She’ll laugh and tell you that’s just her style if you ask but, in reality, she’s messed up every pair she owns within a week because of some scuffle... Or from falling whenever she overuses her quirk and passes out.
