This kiridashi is a cute little bugger. It's a Ccanku C1146 (yes that's spelled correctly) made of, according to the listing on, 440C steel and G10 scales. I'ts an absolute arrowhead, but I kind of doubt it's going to take too much abuse before it's little more than a tape-break.

Notes for A Matter of Duty - Chapter 14 - A factor in the equation

"Congratulations, my lord?" Caution and confusion turned Thoma's regards into something hesitant. "Unfortunately, no. Provisional Commissioner is no victory." Ayato let him think that through. He watched closely as Thoma's hands worked over the displayed ceremonial kimono, as Thoma bent (stiff, decidedly stiff) to untie it from the display rack, as Thoma folded it carefully over an arm (and was that arm trembling?). He noted the tightness in Thoma's jaw, clenching before each bending movement, releasing in the aftermath. He noted, too, the moment that Thoma put the pieces together, the implications of another provisional year. The need for more favors. Further deals. Higher costs. I see, Ayato thought distantly, as Thoma's lips paled almost to blue. Perhaps it is too much for him.

We're almost to the "comfort" part of the hurt/comfort, I promise~

Ayato's issues with eating when stressed is based off of a whole bunch of people in my life. It might be sensory processing related, it might be disordered eating related to stress and a need for control, it might just be a chronic stress-related appetite issue, who knows.

Ayato's ceremonial clothing would be some variety of sokutai. Were aristocrats assisted in getting dressed? I couldn't actually find an answer to this so I made it up. Seems like it'd be helpful with the really formal sokutai though.

omg u might be a saint 🫢🫢🫢 try metropolitan music co.! they’ve got a good price range with lots of useful things, depending on what your budget looks like. i would peruse the site and maybe ask your friend what tools they actually need/use most, depending on if they do more repair or making or setup, and the range of instruments they work on. here are some possibilities in a range of prices that should be pretty safe/versatile:

CLAMPS. we love clamps.

i can’t vouch for this steel, but it’s always nice to have extra scraper stock. there’s a $12 set and a larger set for $42

depending on how much setup work your friend is doing, the multifunction bridge templates and string height gauge set might be useful, those are all around $12 for each

sound post setters, retrievers, and gauges can be good, but you really only need one.. those are in the $15-$30 range

the old wood italian golden ground is a good option for oxidizer, it’s $80 for the set. really beautiful and traditional ground

the kiridashi knives are quite nice quality, those range in price from $50-$65 depending on size

im not sure if your friend uses finger planes much, but if they’re missing a size in the collection, that might be an option as well. those are around $65-$100 a piece depending on the size, but the replacement blades and tooth blade replacements are $25

My Kiridashi, manufactured by Cold Steel. It’s a stately and sharp little knife with a unique look to the blade. It’s fairly light weight and practical as an EDC pocketknife. I don’t usually like “tactical” folding knives but I love this one.

Tanto knife?

Kiridashi is the one I was trying to remember.

I have it cut and mostly shaped at this point. It needs some polishing to get rid of the grinder marks and the final edge work done. I’m thinking about drilling a lanyard hole too.
