A Dumb Kirby Exchange
King Dedede: Yo, Meta Knight.
Meta Knight: Yes, milord?
King Dedede: How come you and dat der Kirby look so alike? I’ve been meanin’ to ask for a while now.
Meta Knight: ‘Tis one of life’s great mysteries, is it not? What exactly is our relation? As far as enigmas go, it is amongst other questions still unanswered in our myriad adventures. Questions such as, what happened to the Ancient Halcandrans after they made the clockwork comets that roam the stars? From what void were the Dark Matter spawned and for what purpose? What were the true crimes for which the aeon hero, Galacta Knight, was locked away in a crystal prison? What was the nightmare of a galactic crisis which Hyness and his clan stopped in the past? What happened to Shiver Star and it’s inhabitants, and did they have any relations to the precursors of The Forgotten Land? Why do Waddle Dees lack a mouth?
King Dedede:
King Dedede: y’know, you could have just said somethin’ normal like, “oh he’s my adopted kid brother” or, “oh, he’s just an apprentice of mine” and not like, rambled for an hour about everything we don’t know.
Meta Knight: Apologies, milord. I thought you knew better than to ask.
Bandana Dee: I mean, you two look awfully alike when your mask isn’t on, minus the wings and all.
King Dedede: …y’know, now dat you mention it, how come Waddle Dees don’t got a mouth? You were speakin’ words just now, Bandee.
Bandana Dee: *aside glance*
Bandana Dee: It’s one of life’s great mysteries, isn’t it?
King Dedede: IMMA CLOBBER YOU IF YOU START WITH DAT AGAIN——

I have a Kirby Heardle Thread on Twitter so sometimes I go off about how much I love this series' music, here’s 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 so far (with a lot more added in lol):
DARK STAR IS AN UNDERRATED BANGER!! I’ve heard people say it feels uncharacteristically up-beat for the setting of walking through a planet made of Dark Matter, but to me it gives off the vibe of, "Lets fucking goo! We know what we're facing now despite how scary it is!" And there’s a whole musical journey these games took you on leading up to this!
In DL2, Dark Matter Swordsman has this energetic theme (Duel in the Darkened Sky) that fits with this surprise battle with a spooky swordsman, but the true Dark Matter theme (Dark Matter) is more dark and mysterious. There’s this whole great game design thing going on as well, with how you don’t fight DMS as a swordsman - the blade itself does pithy damage -  but by reflecting his Dark Matter attacks at him to reveal his true form underneath. It’s all an amazing reveal taking you from, “Who’s this mysterious swordsman?” to “WHAT is this creepy mysterious THING wth??”       Then DL3's Dark Matter’s theme (HyperZone 1) is a bit chaotic but has an energetic and triumphant sound like, "Ok, we've beaten this creep before, and we can do it again!" But then, when Zero comes in - bigger, badder, thrice as unsettling leader of the Dark Matter - you get that really chaotic and frantic theme that fits the fucking insanity of the fight (HyperZone 2). The background becomes crazy, this horrifying eye monster spits blood at you before meeting it’s gorey demise - it all compliments the fight so damn well!     Once we get to Dark Star in K64, we know what we're fighting again and its back to that triumphant energy we had against DM in DL3 with even more gusto. We saw it’s true form, we learned of the true nature behind it - whatever Zero and the Dark Matter have left for us, we’re ready! It’s a really great combination of determination, desperation, and finality all in this song and short little section before the final battle.      Zero^2's final theme in K64 is sooo beautiful, and especially compared to other boss themes then, perfectly fits the final battle against the first really huge villain of the series. As well as a villain who even then was hinted to be more connected to Kirby than we knew. It's grand and dramatic and melancholic and I love it! The Dark Matter saga had taken you on a journey from a shocking duel against a foe darker than any you’d faced before, to triumphantly standing against a god of darkness to protect the galaxy, and it all culminates in that amazing arrangement!! It’s incredibly powerful and I fuckinnnnn love these games!!!!!
Oh and fucking shout out to Miracle Matter’s theme for the awesome beginning fake-out that sounds like all the boss themes and then turns into this dark fucked up DnB song !! YOU ARE *THEE* BEST KIRBY BOSS MIRACLE MATTER AND I LOVE YOU!!

Hot take
Kirby lore is great, but has SO MUCH lost potential
Don't you see the amount of amazing content that could be taken in depth thanks to the lore it has? The most we see of Kirby Lore being utilized in more games than the one it was introduced in is the Dark Matter Trilogy and mere call backs from other games that follow.
Then comes the part where HAL brings more convoluting lore like what we know of the Magolor epilogue, and HAL just doesn't do anything else with it. But I think this is shown better with FL, PR and TD. To this day, Star Allies is the one most discussed regarding Kirby Lore, not only because of Void Termina but also because HAL ACTUALLY made some exposition of Kirby Lore like Hyness' speech and such. Not everyone will be able to see it but at least it's not subtext anymore, just text. Thing that doesn't get seen basically at all with the other games I mentioned
I get the "Use subtext for your story", but you overuse it and you get the most vague lore humanity has ever seen. Sure, in some games and shows it works in their favor thanks to the theming of those stories but Kirby never struck me as one of those, at least in my opinion.
Maybe this is why many artists and writers have made an insane amount of AUs for Kirby trying to give more lore with actual dialogue - compare the amount of exposition heavy AUs Kirby has with the amount of exposition heavy AUs franchises like Mario, Metroid or Zelda have. See the difference?
My point is, Kirby should REALLY do more with its lore instead of leaving some of the most intriguing topics I've seen stagnating and catching dust.

About metadede headcanons (it's not much of a headcanon more like how their relationship evolved and my headcanon timeline about the Kirby games)
•They were friends since childhood.
•They stayed as friends until Dedede declared himself the king of dreamland, they were traveling through stars until that and meta didn't wanted to stay in one star for the rest of his life and wanted to go adventuring through space.
They still give each other calls and hangout, but as the time passed (and dedede started to change aka get cropted by power) those calls and visits became fewer and fewer until they didn't talk to each other.
•After that the first time Meta heard about dedede was due news that said king of dreamland stole all the food. Meta realized the power went to his head back when they were still hanging out, but he didn't think he would stood that low.
•Because of that meta knight figured out the best thing to do was to dethrone dedede, he wasn't planing to give dedede any massive punishment at worst he would send him to dangeon for a few months until he learned his lesson, but when he got out he wouldn't get his throne back.
•Meta knights revenge happens and after that Kirby informs dedede about the events and he says he will think about it.
•When it's time for Kirby's adventure, king dedede against his better judgment gives one of the star rod pieces to meta because he trusts him.
•Due to that Meta and Dedede starts hanging out and Meta realizes that Dedede has changed for the better (in my headcanon dark matter trilogy happens between superstar and adventure).
•After that they become friends again and fighters 2 happens.
Now for some non-timeline related headcanons:
•Meta likes to sit on top of dedede's head to feel tall.
•Dedede can pick meta in his hands.
•Dedede doesn't want anyone to know that his possessions has left an affect on him so he doesn't talk to anyone about it, luckly ,even tho meta is terrible at picking up on social ques, noticed something was wrong and talked to him about those things and made dedede feel better.
•When they were children Meta once gave Dedede a rock that he thought was pretty cool, and Dedede said "Yes, I will marry you" since he was told rejecting an offer from a friend was rude.
•In things where meta needs to have normal sized arms compared to dedede (like hugging dancing etc.) he uses his wings.
Sorry if it is too long.
not too long at all! thanks for writing all that!
it’s really interesting to me just how popular the childhood friends headcanon is, considering there’s not much canon basis for it (not that that matters.) it’s a really cute hc though and i’m always happy to see it
definitely always love the star rod thing. it’s interesting that even back then mk and dedede were kind of cast in the same light, y’know? that being a point they connect over makes a lot of sense—your timeline is a lot different than mine here, being placed after romk, but it’s pretty cool that dedede would trust him with that even after that. adds a layer to it.
anyway i drew a couple of those headcanons just for funsies
Tumblr media
i do think meta likes to be held, just probably not in full armor and where everyone can see him lol. it’s definitely a little awkward given their sizes though. holds like burger…
i’m not really a childhood friends metadede believer but imagining their dynamic is pretty fun? especially if we’re adding the Spanish speaking mk hc into this. i guess for some reason i imagined dedede as a little more shy here? just not quite broken out of his shell yet…no pun intended. they can have shenanigans together or something
and dedede only accepting meta’s “proposal” out of courtesy is so funny lol. i can imagine him going home after this and being a little upset because now he feels like he has to marry him. i’m sure the conversation that followed that was very fun /sarcasm
poor meta must’ve been very confused ^^” ah but the irony…
it’s just a very endearing concept to me. cute :>

Dark Matter: a profile
Tumblr media
Aside from King Dedede, the most reoccuring antagonist in the Kirby franchise are members of the enigmatic Dark Matter tribe. The tradition of Kirby final bosses being grotesque compared to the rest of the series really started with them and Nightmare in Kirby's Adventure. Unlike Nightmare however, Dark Matter went on to become somewhat of a series staple and when I think of spooky Nintendo lore, they often spring to mind. As such, in this blog post I want to explore Dark Matter.
Dark Matter Trilogy
The first appearance of Dark Matter was in Kirby's Dream Land 2, where it is the true final boss of the game. According to the game's manual, it was responsible for shattering the rainbow bridges connecting the rainbow islands together. It also possesses King Dedede and plans to turn Dream Land into a dark world to inhabit (specifically according to the Japanese Digital 3DS manual). What exactly this means is left unclear in this game. It apparently does this because it is lonely and wants friends, according to an excerpt from the January 2019 issue of the Japanese magazine Nintendo DREAM (translation from Wikirby):
最初に登場したダークマターには、友達が欲しくてちょっと寂しがりやなのでは…という設定も『星のカービィ2』開発当時の社内にあったようですので、今回のフレンズとハートの物語と親和性があるのではとも考えましたが、さすがにダークマターには今はまだ悪役を貫いてほしく (It seems that, when Dark Matter first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land 2, the developers had the idea that he was lonely and wanted to have friends. I thought that this could tie into this game's themes of "friends" and "hearts", but I'd of course prefer for Dark Matter to remain a villain for now.)
When all Rainbow Drops are collected in Dream Land 2 and King Dedede is defeated, the drops turn into a Rainbow Sword and Dark Matter emerges from Dedede. Dark Matter is fought in two forms: one resembling a swordsman and one an eye surrounded by darkness. Of the two, the latter is considered its true form.
Tumblr media
Dark Matter returns in Kirby's Dream Land 3, but with heavier guns. The plan is much the same as in Dream Land 2, but this time the stakes are raised. A ball of darkness with a red eye in the center emerges from the depths of space and shatters the rings of Pop Star.
Tumblr media
After arriving, the dark cloud spreads five tendrils to five corners of the planet and possesses six beings: Whispy Woods, Acro, Pon/Con, Ado and King Dedede. Kirby and his friend Gooey, who first appeared in Dream Land 2 captured by Dark Matter, set out to face this crisis. During it, they collect heart stars by helping the people of Pop Star and cleanse the darkness from each area by defeating one of the primary possessed beings. All of this culminates in a fight with King Dedede, who probably gets the worst deal out of the possession: a mouth and a Dark Matter eye in his stomach.
Tumblr media
If all Heart Stars are gathered, they become the Love-Love Stick after Dedede's defeat. In a similar scenario to Dream Land 2, Kirby follows up Dark Matter to the heart of the black clouds, the Hyper Zone, and defeats Dark Matter. After Dark Matter is gone, a new being called 0 appears. It is a red eye in a larger white body, from which it can spawn smaller Dark Matters. Once 0 is defeated, the Hyper Zone and the black clouds around it collapse. It is thus implied 0 is the source of Dark Matter and may have been behind the events of Dream Land 2 as well.
Tumblr media
Another thing that Dream Land 3 adds to the Dark Matter lore has to do with Gooey. According to the manual of the game, he is made of "the same stuff" as Dark Matter but he doesn't have an evil spirit. He also takes on a form similar to Dark Matter during the final battle, which later games have dubbed Mock Matter. Beings can thus be made of the same dark substance as Dark Matter while not being evil. This also adds an additional layer to Gooey in Dream Land 2, as he was captured in that game. Perhaps Dark Matter put him on Pop Star in the first place as a captive.
The final game in the so-called Dark Matter Trilogy is Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and it involves a plot similar to that of Dream Land 3. Instead, this time the Dark Matter beings target a different planet: Ripple Star, where Fairies live. One of the Fairies escapes with the planet's precious Crystal and three Dark Matters give chase, leading them to Pop Star. This is how Kirby gets involved and the three Dark Matters do their possession shtick: on a Waddle Dee, Adeleine and King Dedede.
After Pop Star, the first world of the game, Dark Matter beings do not play a large role until the end of the game. But the game does introduce a whole slew of new Dark Matter beings. The first is Miracle Matter, who controls the black clouds covering Ripple Star. It has the appearance of a many-sided die, some sides covered in red eyes, and it can take on copy ability-esque forms: Bomb, Burn, Cutter, Ice, Needle, Spark and Stone. The black clouds controlled by Miracle Matter also spit out N-Z enemies, indicating they are made of darkness as well.
Tumblr media
The final major Dark Matter being in Kirby 64 is 0², who possessed the Queen of Ripple Star. If Kirby and his friends manage to repair the Fairies' Crystal, the darkness possessing the Queen is dispelled and forms the Dark Star. Inside lurks 0², who resembles 0 but also has an angel motif. This might indicate he is 0 resurrected from the dead, though the relation between the two has thus far been kept vague. Both 0² and Miracle Matter appear to be sources of Dark Matter and dark clouds, similar to 0 at least. When 0² is defeated, the Dark Star collapses similarly to the Hyper Zone and the threat of Dark Matter is dispelled once more.
Tumblr media
The final game to introduce a Dark Matter being without much ambiguity is Kirby Squeak Squad. A lot of the game revolves around collecting a particular treasure chest. When it is opened by antagonist Daroach, he is enveloped in a black smoke and turns dark. After his defeat, it is revealed he was possessed by Dark Nebula, a being with an eye similar to both incarnations of 0. It has hallmarks of a Dark Matter being, such as possession, a red eye and even has elemental powers similar to Miracle Matter. It also seemingly creates a black hole near Pop Star after it is released. This all makes sense, as its Japanese name is ダークゼロ or Dark Zero. In addition, it is also not called Ruler of the Underworld in Japanese but 暗黒の支配者/あんこくのしはいしゃ (Ruler of Darkness).
Tumblr media
It is interesting to note that this Dark Matter being was not roaming around freely in space, trying to create dark worlds or wanting for friends. Instead, it is sealed in a chest and Meta Knight seemingly knows this, as he tried to keep the chest out of the hands of Kirby and Daroach's Squeaks. This potentially suggests there is a history of Dark Matter invasions that goes back futher than just Dream Land 2.
Origins of Darkness
Starting with Kirby's Return to Dream Land for the Wii and under the directorship of Shinya Kumazaki, the Kirby series became more lore focused. Of this new era of Kirby, Star Allies goes the most in-depth about Dark Matter through the being of Void Termina, the final boss of the game.
Void Termina itself is not a Dark Matter being, but more of an empty creature that is influenced by the energy that surrounds it. This is explained in an interview with Kumazaki. Due to this, during the final battle, he takes on the appearance of Kirby and Dark Matter. Kirby because it is the first thing he sees when being unsealed and Dark Matter due to the darkness gathered by the people trying to revive him.
Tumblr media
The people trying to revive Void Termina are a cult who worship him as a God of Destruction. According to their leader Hyness, they also worship "matters most dark" and they revive Void Termina by assembling a vessel he is contained in. This is the Jamba Heart, which consists of smaller Dark Hearts, and it is this darkness that Hyness and his minions gather. The Dark Hearts possess and twist the people that grab them, similar to Dark Matter possession. Due to this darkness, Void Termina takes on the appearance of Dark Matter during the final battle.
There is more background to Void and his relation with darkness however. According to the Japanese description of Void Termina, True Destroyer of Worlds (Phase 2), he is the originator of four types of matter: Soul, Heart, Dream and Dark:
夢ドリームが、闇ダークが、魂ソウルが、心ハートが… その物質に 混沌と可能性が全て集い、淵源の祖となり 生誕する。 (When the matters of dream, dark, soul, and heart gather... and combine with chaos and infinite possibilities, the ancestor from the origin is born.)
And according to the description of Hyness in the The Ultimate Choice mode, Void produced darkness at some point in the distant past before being sealed in the Jamba Heart by four heroes:
"All that was written about Void Termina in the ancient scrolls was the progenitor of darkness was vanquished by four heroes of yore, using four spears of the heart."
Void producing darkness may be the ultimate origin of the "Dark Matter" substance in the universe, which in turn may have given rise to 0, 0² and Dark Nebula and the rest of the Dark Matter beings produced by them. The "Dark Matter" substance is likely what is seen in Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64 forming Hyper Zone and Dark Star. Of note is that upon the collapsing, many Dark Matter eyes can be seen in Dark Star, similar to the red eye in the Hyper Zone.
Tumblr media
Other appearances
In the Kirby series, there are several other beings that might be made of or are connected to Dark Matter, though it is a lot more loose:
Dark Matter Clone: a clone of Dark Matter's Dream Land 2 incarnation made by the supercomputer Star Dream. It appears in the Meta Knightmare Returns mode of Planet Robobot, which is set in a world parallel to the main Kirby one. It only appears in its swordsman form and wields the Rainbow Sword, based on its memories of his defeat at the hands of Kirby.
Dark Mind: a being inhabiting the world that lays in the Dimension Mirror. Its true form looks like a fiery version of 0 and it formed from evil minds gathering and being born in the mirror according to Kumazaki. These "evil minds" may be a form of darkness/Dark Matter substance. Of note is that Shadow Dedede, another being spawned by the Dimension Mirror, has similar attacks to Dedede's possessed form in Dream Land 3. A mix between Dark Mind and Shadow Dedede, King D-Mind, appears in the two Kirby Clash games.
Tumblr media
Dark Crafter: a single-eyed smoke being that drained Dream Land of all its color in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It operates by possessing Claycia and during its fight, it is revealed that under its colorful appearance, it looks like it is made of darkness.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
That is most of what there is to say about Dark Matter lore-wise. A persistent enemy in the Kirby canon that is made of pure darkness and can twist the minds and appearances of those it possesses, with a potential origin that goes back to a being worshiped as a God of Destruction. In short, a black of darkness spot in a series that is otherwise mostly cute and wholesome.

Something I wish a Miraculous reboot does (if there ever is one) is having seasonal villains like Ninjago or Kirby.
Those series kept their main villains (Dedede and Garmadon) till their used all their history potential at the time and decided to redeem them and change them for other stronger and iconic villains or just become a second show for the main new attraction (for example Dedede in the dark matter trilogy being replaced by said evil race and Garmadon in rise of the snakes being replaced by the Serpentine and Pythor) yet Ladybug has been reusing Hawkmoth for way to long (he should have been defeated in 3 seasons like Garmadon or how dedede only had 3 main antagonistic roles till he became a hero) this Can also help the world building like the previous two (for example Ninjago made the serpentine which tied with Master Chen and the cursed realm which tied with Morro which tied with Nadakhan which tied to master Chen right hand man. Or how the dream fountain connected with the ancients which tied with the nova comets which connect with Haltman which connects with Magolor which connects with the ancients. This kind of things make the world more grounded and make feel useful for the old viewers for giving attention in previous seasons).
And is not that hard,I can give 3 villain concepts to replace Hawkmoth for a pair of seasons each.
1-a bunch of evil Kwamis which caused the creation of all miraculous for selfish wishes escaped from their imprisonment made by the good kwamis and order of the miraculous.
2-a mercenary organization tries to get the miraculous using high technology able to manipulate the miraculous Powers.
3-undead hunters which got a sinister fate in hands of miraculous users have been hunting down miraculous users for revenge.
Now let’s connect all:the undead hunters were created by the most evil kwami which got trapped by both Good and Evil kwamis for wanting extinction of existence, the evil kwamis once had plagg as their second in command till he betrayed them after seeing he’s been using the power of destruction wrong, the criminal organization is using the same material the miraculous are made of to power their machines but the leader of that organization also gave the peacock and Butterfly miraculous to Gabriel in the past so Gabriel asks them to get the miraculous till the reveal to Gabriel of Adrien being car noir which undoes the deal but the leader of the mercenary organization becomes pals with the leader of the evil kwamis making a parallel with plagg and Adrien and making a stronger connection between cat noir and the villain and at the end the leaders of the undead hunters were the victims of old creation and Destruction users (which worked with the evil miraculouses) at the time plagg was evil which was also the time Tikki redeemed plagg.
I just expanded the world of miraculous by making them their Pure evil villain, their ancient enemy villain them and modern villain which also connects into the first villain Hawkmoth. Which is more than astruc ever did in 4 seasons!!! And that’s just Some of the ideas I have without including the Minor recurring villains Rhino,Electro,Vulture,Sandman and Scorpion style or the new villains created by the old villains. There’s so much ground yet so little use to it
It's clear to almost everyone in the fandom that Gabriel has long overstayed his welcome as a villain. To the show's credit, the writers have at least tried to introduce other antagonistic characters (Nathalie, Lila, Chloe, Felix, and Tomoe), but all of them are connected to Gabriel in some way or another, and it's painfully obvious that the show prioritizes the "Akuma of the week" formula over focusing on any of those other antagonists.
Also, the ideas you came up with sound really interesting, anon.

I hear you have Metroid headcanons? 👀
I have both a small cute one and a big wacky one!
The small cute headcanon is that, after the events of Metroid Fusion, Samus took the Etecoons and Dachoras to some scientists so that there could be some record of these species, and then, because there aren't enough of them left to survive long-term, she took them in and cares for them between missions.
My big wacky Metroid headcanon is that the series not only exists in the same universe as the Kirby series, but that Phazon is a manifestation of Void Termina's power comparable to Dark Matter. The Leviathan Seeds are equivalent to the Dark Matter orb guys, including the Dark Matter Swordsman. And Phaaze itself is equivalent to Zero and Dark Star.
The Metroid Prime trilogy even mirrors the Dark Matter trilogy in some ways. In Prime 1, it seems like phazon is only affecting the region around the Impact Crater, similar to how in KDL2, Dark Matter Swordsman is specifically affecting just the Rainbow Isles. Then, the following games have their respective antagonistic forces enveloping an entire planet (Aether and Popstar), and then the third game includes several different planets, culminating with a final showdown in a planet made of phazon/dark matter.
I know they aren't exactly the same, but I think it's fun to view these trilogies as parallel stories. :)

Feeding my Kirby fans well today.
Finally got around to doing some stuff from the poll! The winner was Metadad content, so I deliver!
Reblog if you like the art! And if you like the designs, check out the rest of the Incarnations AU tag!
Artist and Author's notes under the cut!
I am a firm Metadad believer. Meta is Kirby's mentor, protector, caretaker, everything. I believe that all of Meta's boss fights in the games are either Meta trying to prevent Kirby from doing something foolish (like with the Dream Fountain) or testing them to make sure their ready for whatever challenge comes next. The fact he always gives Kirby a weapon and waits for them says a lot.
In the story for the Incarnations AU, Meta doesn't call himself Kirby's dad until a lot of nonsense, specifically after the end of the Dark Matter trilogy. He's terrified of what being a dad actually would mean, so he refuses to call what they have a parent/child dynamic for a long time. Only when he thought he could've lost Kirby for good to Dark Matter's despair does he crumble and assert once and for all that Kirby's his son and proud of him each and every day.
They make each other better. Meta gets Kirby to stop and think and consider. He helps them get a handle on their powers, and what being an Incarnation means, in all the ways he wishes he did. He's the one Kirby goes to for wisdom, he's the one that gives them the space to grow and adjust. It's what stops Kirby from becoming another chaotic demigod running around, like with Dark Matter and Elfilis.
Kirby makes Meta gentler. While Meta was never cruel, he was closed off. Taking care of Kirby, watching him grow up unafraid and happy, it did something to the Knight's mindset. It let him accept the vulnerability that he tried very hard to bury. It's what ultimately opens his heart enough to let Dedede in as a companion, and what lets him admit to himself that the Meta-Knights are his family.
They are the best things to happen to each other, and they make sure they both know it every time they encounter each other.
I have so many thoughts about their dynamic, so this is probably not the last time I'll draw/write about it.
