Had a brainchild moment hit me with the image of what a Modern AU Forest Ranger Tenzō would look like. Then with the most amazing contributions from @nki-stories and @rengonemad on the @tenzoscabin Discord server, this AU has came to life with a name and some delicous meaty bits to it!
Your Turn To Stay
What we have so far is:
Tenzō the Forest Ranger, he enjoys befriending the wildlife and protecting the forest, helping out visitors, saving the stranded as well as [but not limited to] informing adults and children about the different ecosystems, flora, and fauna.
Shapeshifters come into the mix one day when Tenzō’s out in the forest taking in the scenery on his lunch break. Turns out the wildlife he was befriending and enjoying are mostly shapeshifters.
It’s a happy accident because they all show Tenzō their appreciation for him protecting the forest and their habitat.
This is when Tenzō meets Kakashi the wolf shapeshifter, and leader of the Hatake pack. [The Hatake pack is made up of various shapeshifters, not just wolves.]
Naruto is a fox cub shapeshifter who was adopted by the Hatake pack. [Feel free to send in additional suggestions for other Naruto characters as shapeshifters and members of the Hatake pack!]
Kiba is also a wolf, but he’s of the Inuzuka pack. [Which is mostly made up of his family of shapeshifters, but they also take in a few strays as well.]
Next we have the Akatsuki Hunters. Their goal is to hunt down and steal the souls of the shapeshifters. It’s believed that when you drink the soul of a shapeshifter it gives you unbridled strength/powers, preserves your youth, and you gain an amazing healing factor.
Kakuzu’s only goal is to collect their pelts because money. 🤣
By now it’s been two years and Tenzō has spent so much time with his new shapeshifting friends that he’s fallen in love with the leader of the Hatake pack, Kakashi.
One day, somewhere not too far away from the Hatake pack’s land [which is also part of the forest in which Tenzō patrols], the Akatsuki Hunters manage to get their hands on a Inuzuka shapeshifter who was trying to save a young boy [Sai] from drowning. They managed to pull him from the river, but they ultimately they were knocked out and captured when they were caught off guard. The unconscious boy is found later that evening by another Inuzuka pack member who went out searching for their brother and brought the boy back to the den to be cared for. Unfortunately, Sai is sick with hypothermia and they’re not sure he’ll last the night so they turn him into a shapeshifter to save his life.
The next day, before Tenzō leaves the station for his patrol, he is informed that poachers [the Akatsuki Hunters] have been spotted in the area. Tenzō tries to get to Kakashi and his pack as fast as he can to warn them, but he runs into trouble. Right when Tenzō is far enough into the woods, he is ambushed by Kakuzu and Jūzō. They don’t want any witnesses to their business, and the only reason Sai was left alive was because Hidan didn’t realize what the Inuzuka shapeshifter was doing. He simply thought they were getting a drink of water from the river.
Tenzō is stabbed in the back and stomach then left for dead [or so he thinks], but Kakazu and Jūzō know that shapeshifters are cautious when it comes to the scent of blood and that they’ll investigate it.
Kakashi gets a whiff of coppery scent first, then the familiar scent of Tenzō and he tells his pack to run and hide while he goes off to investigate. Of course Kakashi is panicking because he’s in love with Tenzō too [but they just haven’t admitted it to each other yet]. When Kakashi gets there, Tenzō is already unconscious and he’s ambushed by Kakuzu and Jūzō.
Shapeshifter Kakashi is a forced to be reckoned with and the pair sent out to this area can’t keep up with his attacks. It isn’t until Kakuzu realizes that Kakashi is protecting the Forest Ranger, he see an opportunity to save their own skins as well as some prized pelts. Clearly, the shapeshifter has softspot for this person to which he can use to their advantage. He tells Jūzō to stop fighting, but he doesn’t listen and Kakuzu can’t stand it. He tells him two more times, but by the third time he strikes Jūzō down, killing him. That’s when Kakashi stops, shocked that the Akatsuki Hunter would turn on their own partner and now that Kakuzu has Kakashi’s attention he quickly grabs Tenzō and tells Kakashi that if he wants the Ranger to live, he best come quietly without fighting him. Kakashi doesn’t see any other recourse so he begrudgingly agrees.
Once they make it back to the Akatsuki Hunter’s hideout, Tenzō and Kakashi are placed in a cell together. Unfortunately, Tenzō isn’t going to wake up because he’s lost too much blood and the only thing Kakashi can think to do is turn him into a shapeshifter [I have am still mulling over if shapeshifters become the same animal as the person that turned them, or if they shapeshift into the animal they’re more akin to].
Tenzō’s life is saved and he wakes back up finally, but when he does, he’s no longer human [Either he turns into a wolf, bear, or a big cat? I welcome thoughts, suggestions, and speculation on this! Halp!]. He can’t turn back into a human yet, not until he’s healed up some, and even then he doesn’t know how.
Kakuzu comes in with Kisame and Itachi to show them his catch and he’s satisfied that his impromptu plan paid off. Now they have two shapeshifters for the price of one, which means another pelt for him and another soul for the Akatsuki Hunters [I totally imagine the Akatsuki Hunters being an occult now. Lmfao! 🤣]
That’s all we’ve got for now! If you wish to ask any questions, want to add to this, make suggestions, or comments, please feel free to send them in! 💜🌱🙆‍♂️

New Fic! KakaYama week 2021.
Created for the Day Three Prompt: Sexual Tension
This is an explicit, much later down the road sequel to “Better” which I wrote for Day 2. Read it here on Ao3
Title: To Know Someone Back Rating: Explicit Pairing: Kakashi/Yamato (Tenzo) Summary: Kakashi blinked an eye open to survey Yamato through the steam. He found the younger man watching him right back. The comment had stirred something in him. A reminder that Yamato (Tenzō, Kinoe, whoever) knew him. Knew him well. It was something Kakashi had missed without realizing it was gone until now. It made the contented smile on his face widen just a fraction. @kakayamaweek2021

Meet me in the Woods (3)
Sora Sarutobi is a sheltered child, set safe with parents, classmates and clan, wanting for nothing. He is nobody, living through more terrible things in the first six years of is life than others do in a lifetime. When they meet by accident, Sora’s life is changed forever.
Chapter 3 after almost a month. Here we go or whatever, sorry for the excessive lengths I have no breaks.
Grown up Sora looks like this (click)
Yamato | Tenzō / OC
9370 words.
Teenage years, career advancements and first kisses, plus a disaster.
3. Friend killer Hatake Kakashi
Time passed until Tenzō saw Hatake Kakashi again. He kept thinking of himself as Tenzō, but being called Kinoe became more and more normal again, the word suddenly no longer weird when spoken out loud. He had failed his first and second mission and been sent out to train even harder than he had before, but Danzo-sama did not pull him from missions completely. They gave him an ANBU-Uniform and sent him out to fight and assassinate and do fetch missions and since he did not run into Hatake again he mastered them without issues. If one thought about it closely it was mostly Hatake who had been the reason Tenzō had failed in his missions in the first place. Now that he seemed busy somewhere else Tenzō also had no problems finishing his own assignments successfully.. Every compliment out of Danzo-sama’s lips was like a reward.
He let his hair grow out. It fell long and brown over his shoulders. He had seen pictures of Hashirama, the first hokage, with his long brown hair that reminds one of the root of a tree and maybe a tiny part of him wanted to look like that, to make the connection between them even stronger when it wasn’t really there in the first place. Who knew? He could have been a Senju baby that had been stolen a long time ago and that was why Lord First’ cells worked so well in his body. It was the crumb of hope Tenzō hung on when every other humanity was pushed out of him. Murdering people on the daily in early teenage years did that to a person. He could feel his emotions drive him less and less and the only thing that mattered was the successful end to a mission and the praise out of Danzo-sama’s mouth. The system of Root, the foundation, it clearly worked, as bitter as that was.

Somehow, despite her inadequate ninjutsu and taijutsu and even worse genjutsu Sora was promoted to Chuunin at her third try at the age of 15. Her teammates had at this point long since moved on to better, more interesting missions, Yasumi first and then Saya shortly after. They rarely did things as a three man cell anymore at this point, Sora was too low rank to join them on their S-Ranks. She was sad about no longer being able to hang out with them, having gotten close to both of them in the years they’d spent close together, but she was also relieved that she was not included in their violent, war preventing tasks. There were enough stories of murdered children when Saya came home to last Sora a lifetime. She instead hung back, did missions in and around Konoha and trained her very basic skill with Iruka. Both of them had been essentially the black sheep of their team and taken too long to advance, now they were always black sheep together.
It was clear to Sora that she would never have a career as a shinobi. It was not only her lacking skill level, but also her general growing dislike for everything that had to do with the village administration. Saya had joined the ANBU guards and given the code name fox and her missions were gruesome and overwhelming without any support system in place. When an Anbu guard returned home from bloodshed and trauma they were given a day off, a time to “recharge” and maybe an evaluation, but then usually cleared for work again. Sora had wanted to confront her uncle about it, but bit her lip at her father’s request. It was incredible that nobody seemed to think what she was thinking: that these people needed more support to work through the things they had seen, the things that had been done to them. Konoha had offered counselling sessions to the children that had lost parents in the Kyuubi attack, but according to Iruka it had been short lived and didn’t help much to work through his recurring nightmares. The sessions had essentially been doctors telling him that he was “physically fine” and that if he just “stopped worrying” his mind would follow. Bullshit. It made Sora sick.

If Team 7 were DigiDestineds (Part 12):
(Got legally adopted in his 20s by Senju Tsunade) Senju Yamato's Crests would be Sincerity (Virtue) and Pride (Sin). His digivice is a lime green D-Ark/D-Power (which lacks the card slot and) which has a forest green rim (around the screen) & matching buttons & a likewise strap with the clip for attaching the digivice to things being lime green. The digivice's dark grey square screen has 1 of Yamato's Crests appear on it in lime green whenever he connects with his Digimon partner emotionally in ways that link to either of the 2 Crests. He has a
Tumblr media
Popomon who hatched from a DigiTama/DigiEgg and got nicknamed Hana by him (Yamato originally thought 'bout not giving Hana a nickname; but quickly realised that, in trying to distance himself from this infant, he's behaving like Shimura Danzō).
The 2nd ever time when Yamato & Hana manage to emotionally connect with each other either through Sincerity or through Pride, Hana digivolves into a
Tumblr media
Tanemon. The 3rd time, he digivolves into a
Tumblr media
Alraumon then
Tumblr media
Shurimon followed by
Tumblr media
Toropiamon or into
Tumblr media
Woodmon followed by
Tumblr media
Jyureimon/Cherrymon.
When his partnership/platonic friendship with Hana reaches its peak for the 1st time, Yamato & his Digimon partner matrix digivolve into
Tumblr media
BloomLordmon.
Yamato tries to keep his partnership with Hana professional, but they end up platonically loving each other any way and he realises his childhood trauma still affects him. Yamato helps shy Hana become more honest and self-confident whereas the more socially savvy Digimon helps the human understand the difference between being blunt & telling the truth and the difference between arrogance & self-assurance.
(To be continued in Part 13...)

The Zen of Tenzō
Here’s the prologue to kick off my submissions to @tendaysoftenzo ! I hope to post several short parables that coincide with some of the daily prompts of the event (in a timely manner, haha).
I’ll share it to AO3 once it’s complete. The whole piece will be rated G-T, no archive warnings apply, and it’ll be a gen work (no pairing).
Prologue begins below the cut.
The Zen of Tenzō
Prologue
The greatest gift that Tenzō ever received was time to think.
It was granted to him long after Yamato was assigned to watch over the once-villain Orochimaru. He’d spent years’ worth of days cycling through anger, bitterness, worry, regret, and guilt… All the while maintaining surveillance on the person he blamed for altering his body and life.
The decision to quit the circling thoughts of the injustices inflicted upon Kinoe -and whoever he was before- was a conscious one. However, he couldn’t say when anger gave way to acceptance, only that he was grateful for it.
No longer burning and more aware of himself than he ever had been before, he returned to Konoha. He approached the Rokudaime’s office, intent upon expressing a wish instead of delivering a report.
The Hokage didn’t bother to hide the book he read while he ignored his paperwork, and his former kohai didn’t bother to hide his chuckle.
“Welcome back,” Kakashi lifted his eyes from the page to regard him. “It’s good to see you.”
“It’s good to see you too,” he replied.
Although it remained mostly hidden, Kakashi’s expression changed from mirth to seriousness.
“What is it?” Hatake asked.
“I,” he hesitated as he replied, “I think I would like a reassignment—No,” he closed his eyes and drew a bracing breath to speak the truth. “I would like to retire.” He opened his eyes again and searched Kakashi’s eyes, hoping he wouldn’t find disappointment within them.
When he found none, he felt encouraged to continue. “I’d like to be free to pursue something else.”
Kakashi reclined in his chair, folding his arms across his chest, obviously genuinely curious.
“Your request is approved, of course,” whatever questions he had he kept to himself, for now. “I can’t think of anyone as deserving of peace as you are,” he added quietly.
His shoulders relaxed in relief. “Thank you, Lord Kaka—”
“Drop the ‘Lord’ part, would you?” Kakashi stood up and looked out the windows of the Hokage Tower. “Or else I’ll take too long assigning your replacement.”
Silence settled over the office while Kakashi gazed out the window and the other gazed at his back. His request was approved, but he didn’t feel like their conversation was over.
“This means that your codename will retire too,” Kakashi mused aloud. “What name would you like now?”
“The one that I chose for myself,” Tenzō replied immediately.
Kakashi nodded and looked at Tenzō over his shoulder. “What do you want to pursue?”
“Stillness,” Tenzō chuckled at how odd his vague goal sounded when spoken aloud. “For my own sake,” he added.
Kakashi turned his face away to look out the window again. “I’ll make finding your replacement my top priority,” he said without an ounce of teasing. “In return, please don’t go so far that I can’t reach you for my own sake.”
“I won’t.” It was easy for Tenzō to assure him. He had no intention of straying too far from Konoha, and he was touched by his old captain and friend’s continued concern for his well-being.
Kakashi waved a hand over his shoulder, which Tenzō understood as his dismissal. He left the Hokage’s office and the entire shinobi world shortly after that in favor of a quiet, contemplative existence.
