If someone asked me which character is the most similar to you, my answer would be Myeol Mang. Both highly suicidal, tired of life and like to flirt when we mean nothing.

Contrast this with Emily Blunt/Tom Cruise (20 years) or Paul Bettany/Elizabeth Olson (18 years) [to name just a few on a very lengthy list]
Seeing as how Hollywood is so into casting women young enough to be daughters, and even granddaughters, opposite leading men, you can’t blame me for taking notice that LMH has starred as the romantic lead opposite women older than himself on multiple occasions.

Look, the little robot wants to read too 😂 Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 is a support women #asianreadathon bonus. Female writer, Asian, Korean to be specific, lesbian translator. It depicts the struggles of everyday women, who grapple with the pressures of motherhood, the lost of self, torn between career ambition and societal expectation of mothers being primary caregiver, the under appreciation of their sacrifices, the isolation and loneliness that accompanies it. Also, this is a make up free shot, no edits to my face. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAW1AnLHMHz/?igshid=1hv6ks6ocsgdg

[NEWS] TRANS: That wasn’t a Feminist Controversy but Cyber-Bullying
[HANKYOREH] [Saturday Edition] The Sultan of the TV by Rhie Seunghan
About a certain kind of violence surrounding the singer Irene
Irene recently suffered cyber-terrorism after saying that she had read the feminist novel “1982 Born Kim Ji-Young.” Her male fans caused controversy after showing their hostility towards Irene’s actions by burning her photocards and lashing out at her for “turning feminist.”
To men like Yoo Jaesuk who read “this book,” everybody was silent. People only showed rage when a young woman read it.
Misogynic men and some media outlets are the reason why you get attacked by society when you show a hint of feminism.
Tumblr media
When Red Velvet’s Irene mentioned “1982 Year Born Kim Ji-Young” as one of the books she read during her vacation, some men lashed out in rage, saying that she’s “turned feminist.” What could be the cause of this pathetic phenomenon?
Some men couldn’t contain their rage after Irene had mentioned that she had read “1982 Born Kim Ji-Young” during her vacation. They said that Irene’s victim mentality is going to get even worse from now on. They also felt betrayed by her for doing such a thing to her male fans, who have exploited her looks so that Red Velvet could hit it big and disappointed at themselves for seriously thinking about marrying Irene. To these people who cut her photocards, and burnt her pictures in hope of others empathizing to their fury, the public replied as, “Don’t you have better things to do?”
Immature Men who Express Rage Selectively
The public’s reaction is extremely ordinary. There are quite a number of people who have read this book. “1982 Born Kim Ji-Young,” which has won the hearts of many with its records of discrimination and misogyny that the women living in Korea today have gone through. After being published on October 2016, in just four months 15,000 copies were sold. After seven months, those numbers multiplied to 100,000, and after ten, 270,000 copies were sold. This megaton-scale bestseller ignited a social syndrome.
The book that was on Yoo Jaesuk’s table on MBC’s “Infinity Challenge,” the book that BTS’s RM, actress Park Shin-Hye, model Han Hye-Jin, entertainer Noh Hong-Chul and SNSD’s Sooyoung read and was moved by, the book that Roh Hoe-Chanㅡthe floor leader of the Justice Partyㅡgave to President Moon as a present when he was invited to a luncheon at the Blue House last year, the book that congressman Keum Tae-Supㅡmember of the Democratic Partyㅡgave as a present to all members of Congress with his own money was all this bookㅡ“1982 Year Born Kim Ji-Young.”
Was there such a severe allergic reaction when the members of Congress gave this book as a present to each other, when the merchandisers of famous bookstores recommended “1982 Born Kim Ji-Young,” when “SBS Special” dedicated a whole episode to this book, or when JTBC’s “Please Call My Name” introduced this book? This may be because I have limited information, but I’ve never heard of men withdrawing their support when President Moon promised to become a feminist president, or boycotting SBS, JTBC, and Kyobo bookstore. I also have never heard of men calling out BTS for their actions or systematically leaving hate comments. Thus, this means that these enraged men are selectively expressing their rage on someone smaller than their sizeㅡyoung idol girl group membersㅡand I think this action of spewing undeserved anger selectively towards people they think they can take on is just ugly. Many entertainment media sources, who have been fed up with these kinds of ugly acts, have stood on Irene’s side and have been calling these ugly men out through columns.
But some of these columns have a weird sense of logic. While saying that they have read “1982 Born Kim Ji-Young” to show support for Irene, some columns emphasize that they’ve only read the book instead of providing any kind of comments or thoughts about it. In other words, this means that it’s wrong for Irene to be subject to cyber-terrorism, because she’s never said that she’s a feminist. She said she only read a book, so interpreting that as a feminist comment and using it to justify cyberterrorism would be illogical.
But in other words, that also means that if Irene had said that she’s a feminist, there would be nothing that she could do about men throwing a fit about it. “If Irene had participated in a talk about feminism, or had done some cult activities after reading that book, that could have been a problem. All she did was read a book. There isn’t a single reason for her to be criticized because of that.” (From “Can’t Irene Even Read a Book?” by Sports World’s Yoon Gi-Baek. Published on March 19th, 2018.) What do you mean that could have been a problem? Is it wrong for people to give lectures about a book that moved them?
When APink’s Son Naeun got attacked by some male fans after posting a picture where her phone caseㅡwhich had “Girls Can Do Anything” written on itㅡcould be seen on her Instagram a few months ago, quite a number of columns written in support for Son Naeun also had the same flow of logic. When her agency explained that the said phone case was sponsored by ZADIG&VOLTARE, a brand that Son Naeun was the model of, a lot of media sources published articles titled “Untimely Feminist Controversy, Turns out to be Sponsored...”
This happening was a result of some meminists trying to suppress young women when they see the slightest hint of them trying to make their own voice, but countless titles of articles reported this as a misunderstanding, where Son Naeun’s actions caused her to be misunderstood as a feminists, and therefore causing her to be subject to undeserved insults. It’s as if the titles are saying that there was nothing that Son Naeun could do about the insults if she had said that she’s a feminist.
The media’s habit of using phrases like “000 Under Controversy for being Feminist” whenever something like this breaks out is making the Korean society less sensitive to these kinds of issues. Should someone calling themselves a feminist be controversial?
Let’s say that there are people who are criticizing the principle that all people are born with equal rights regardless of race and societies who still discriminate people based on race should constantly reform themselves.  Normally, we would call the criticizers “racists” and call their actions as hate crime. If we were to use the word “controversy,” we would place the perpetrators as the subject, and title news articles as “Racists under Controversy for Hate Speech.” We wouldn’t say “Untimely Equalist Controversy.” But when people who go against the belief of feminismㅡthe belief that people are born with equal rights regardless of gender and that societies who still discriminate people based on gender should constantly reform themselvesㅡcome together and bully someone online, why is that incident relayed with articles titled “000 Under Untimely Feminist Controversy?”
Tumblr media
“1982 Year Born Kim Ji-Young” won the hearts of many readers with its records of misogyny and discrimination that Korean men had been suject which recorded the misogyny and discrimination that Korean women had been subject to. It’s a bestseller that has sparked a syndrome with in the Korean society. Within just ten months after its release, 270,000 copies had been sold.
Why is the Media Speaking for the Meminists
Those kinds of newsㅡregardless of their original intentionsㅡtell young women to not do anything that might get them misunderstood as a feminist, because when they say they’re “feminist,” they’ll be subject to “untimely controversy.” Of course, because I’ve been partially involved in the journalism industry while scurrying around the edges of this world, I know that the reporters wouldn’t have written those columns with malicious intentions to discourage young female readers. I believe that they have titled the articles that way because they’ve been accustomed to that pattern. But if the media themselves don’t start to fix those kinds of patterns, it’s going to be hard to erase the undeserved stigma that feminism has in the Korean society. So, starting from now, we must stop describing undeserved attacks and cyber-bullying as “controversies” so that these actions can stop being justified. The only thing “controversial” about this incident is the absurd combination of consumer capitalism and meminists who believe that they can control young female celebrities’ freedom of speech and the groundless rage towards feminism, not feminism itself.
Now it’s time to fix the wrong headlines. Irene and Son Naeun weren’t subject to an “untimely feminist controversy,” but a victim of “cyber-bullying by meminists.” The point is whether or not these celebrities are feminists but the violence of meminists, who upload pictures of damaged photocards and burnt pictures, and storm to the celebrities’ SNS accounts to spit out malicious comments. The solution to the problem can only be solved when you clearly understand the point of the problem.
