genshin for the fandom ask game!

The first character I first fell in love with:

Diluc <3 He was literally the whole reason I got into Genshin lmao. Idk why but I just loved him so much, and I still do, but not as much as I used to (I'm a bit annoyed because he never came home). I guess one of the reasons I liked him was because he reminded me of Giyuu from Demon Slayer, Shrirou from BNA and Jiang Cheng from Mo Dao Zu Shi, and I just find those sort of characters extremely comforting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Thoma probably. I didn't really have much of an opinion on him at first (because he just looked like discount Childe), but now I find that I actually really like him as a character! Idk when his banner is but I'll probably pull for him

The character everyone else loves that I don't:

Albedo. I genuinely don't understand why everyone loves him?? Like, he's fine and his backstory is cool, but everyone acts as if he's god's gift to the world. The only thing I really like about him is Khoi Dao being his va

The character I love that everyone else hates:

Idk Amber maybe? I know everyone else doesn't hate her, but I always see people saying she's weak, like??? Yeah, of course your Amber's weak, you didn't level her past lv 20 and you never use her???

The character I used to love but don't any longer:

Zhongli, I guess?? Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like him, I just used to love him a lot more than I do now

Tbh probably Noelle or Barbara <3 (or Kazuha)

THE EVENTS! first, “Shadows amidst snowstorms” with albedo, amber and eula! - it’s the guild’s winter training in dragonspine, and we get event currency and can exchange for rewards! there are different training challenges, the first one is the agility one! the second one is tracker training! and the last one is combat training! we can also build the snowmen and find components during the tracker and combat trainings! we can also get a new sword, cinnabar spindle! also, the snowmen stay after the event! there apparently also is a special boss in the event story 👀

Second Event, “Bantan Sango Case Files: The Warrior Dog” in Inazuma - animals have been disappearing and the traveller wants to find them! there is like a dog that keeps them and we have to free them?? stop it’s all so cute i can’t WHAT- also, we can get a new gadget from this with which we can catch (“recreate”) animals from open world and take them to our teapot!

Third Event, Energy Amplifier! it’s pretty similar to the first one!

Fourth Event: Misty Dungeon! it’s that one event with the runes we had before? it’s also pretty similar to the last one, but there are new characters we can trial!

When Spider-Man Becomes Venom

If being Venom was like being in the Beatles, then Peter Parker would be Pete Best. His stretch of time in the late-80s wearing his living, black costume is a staple of his history. Before it turned Eddie Brock into a box office giant, the symbiote made for a badass variant look for Spider-Man that still holds up to this day. It’s the ultimate story of how we can lose ourselves to power, even if a loved one beat you over the head with lessons about responsibility.

Over the years, Spider-Man did rejoin with the symbiote a few times, usually in the name of heroism. In Venomized, a Venom symbiote from another reality bonded to him for a little while. At the end of Dan Slott’s lengthy Amazing Spider-Man run, Eddie Brock let Spidey borrow the symbiote so he could fight the Red Goblin (Norman Osborn as Carnage). These days, Parker and his former tights at least have an understanding.

This April, the team of Chip Zdarsky and Pasqual Ferry will be doing a four-issue take on Marvel’s What If? by giving us Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow. The idea? Spider-Man not only never gets rid of his hungry ooze pants, but he embraces his hungry ooze pants!

Yes, we see Peter Parker intentionally bond with what would have been known as the Venom symbiote and keep on keeping on with the crime-fighting. What happens when such a pure-hearted hero goes all-in on wearing clothes that constantly tell him to bite people’s faces off? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Then again, Peter holding onto the symbiote is an idea that’s been visited time and time again. Not only has it popped up in issues of What If?, but also in other forms of Marvel media.

WHAT IF THE ALIEN COSTUME HAD POSSESSED SPIDER-MAN?

In the fourth issue of What If?’s second volume, Danny Fingeroth and Mark Bagley jumped onto the then-recent introduction of Venom by doing an issue about what would have happened had Peter Parker taken too long to figure out what the deal was with his black costume. He couldn’t get in touch with the Fantastic Four, so he instead met up with Dr. Connors, which was a fruitless venture. By the time Reed Richards was able to investigate, the symbiote was already bonded to Spider-Man and wouldn’t be removed so easily.

Puppeting Parker’s body, the symbiote escaped captivity and hid in the city for several days. Spider-Man eventually came across a rampaging Hulk, which convinced the symbiote to leave Spider-Man for this upgrade of a host. Abandoned, Peter Parker appeared as an old man due to how much the creature sucked him dry. Using his final hours to design a sonic gun that could destroy the symbiote, Peter’s body finally gave out.

The symbiote eventually left Hulk for Thor. Interestingly enough, Banner was left cured of being the Hulk while the symbiote claimed what happened to Parker was a mistake. Whether it was telling the truth or not, it still took over Thor’s body and tried to hide out in Mount Rushmore. Luckily, Reed Richards had Black Bolt’s epic voice on speed dial and that took care of that.

Well, except for Black Cat getting the kill shot thanks to that aforementioned sonic gun.

SECRET WARS: 25 YEARS LATER

The final issue of the second volume of What If? took a look back at the original Secret Wars event and wondered what would happen had the heroes and villains been stuck on Battleworld for a generation. This Jay Faerber/Gregg Schigiel collaboration had Galactus and the Beyonder kill each other, meaning that all the survivors were stranded. Much had happened in those 25 years, but for the most part, the heroes and villains put their differences aside. Sure, there was something in there about Dr. Doom shacking up with the Enchantress, only for her to leave him for Thor and Doom killing her because of it, but otherwise you had the Wrecking Crew chilling out with Hawkeye and She-Hulk like old friends.

The stars of the one-shot were the offsprings, like the daughter of Captain America and Rogue or the son of Human Torch and Wasp. Spider-Man only had a couple moments, but they were incredibly interesting. He seemed colder to everyone and there was a curious debate over whether anyone had seen him eat anything.

During the climactic battle, Klaw blasted Spider-Man with some sonics. The symbiote pulled away to reveal nothing underneath but Peter Parker’s skeleton. This turned out to be far from a surprise to the heroes as Human Torch saved him and moved on without a second thought.

THE ANIMATED SERIES FINALE

Straying away from the Venom symbiote, there was a time in the comics where Ben Reilly – back when he took over being Spider-Man – was the host to the Carnage symbiote for a few hours. Nothing really happened with it, but he looked rad as hell and it made for a cool cover image.

The 90s Spider-Man cartoon ended the series by doing its own prototype version of Into the Spider-Verse. The final two-parter took place in “I Really, Really Hate Clones” and “Farewell, Spider-Man.”

In an alternate reality, a version of the Clone Saga storyline happened, only in this one, Peter was more of an asshole to Ben Reilly instead of treating him like a brother. When Peter found out that he was possibly the clone, he got extra pissed about it right around the time when the Carnage symbiote was nearby. He became Spider-Carnage and created a plan to destroy the multiverse.

A team of Spider-Men from different realities came together to stop him. After visiting a world where Spider-Man wore armor and was successful and happy in every way, the cartoon’s main Spider-Man realized that Uncle Ben was probably alive in that universe. That Uncle Ben confronted Spider-Carnage and got through to him. Although the man within wasn’t strong enough to expel the symbiote, he was able to sabotage his own multiverse-destroying plans via sacrificing his own life, all the while begging for forgiveness for all the horrors he committed.

WHAT IF? THE OTHER

Peter David and Khoi Pham did a one-shot where the Venom symbiote returned to Peter at the absolute worst time. The Other was as storyline where Spider-Man seemingly died, but survived in a cocooned form. After getting in touch with his inner spider, he was reborn with more primal abilities that unfortunately didn’t last too long. This alternate version had Spider-Man refuse the rebirth. Everyone already mourned him and he didn’t want to have that happen all over again. He remained in his cocoon, choosing to let nature take its course over time.

At that time, Mac Gargan was Venom’s host and the symbiote could sense Spider-Man’s situation. Knowing Peter was ripe for the picking, the symbiote left Gargan and consumed the husk of Peter Parker. With the symbiote in full control, he was neither Spider-Man nor Venom. He was Poison.

Poison confronted Mary Jane and Aunt May, but realized they wanted nothing to do with him. Poison instead left and spawned a new symbiote child in order to bond with and reanimate the corpse of Gwen Stacy.

Yeah, lot of laughs going on in that story. Sheesh.

WHAT IF? AGE OF APOCALYPSE

Age of Apocalypse was already a bizarre alternate universe. Rick Remender and Dave Wilkins made it even more batshit insane by having Legion accidentally kill both Xavier and Magneto. In this reality, Nate Summers joined with a superhero resistance team to take out Apocalypse and there’s all sorts of crazy stuff going on.

At one point, the team came across a nest of Peter Parker clones engulfed in a giant black web of symbiote. A horrified Captain America (wielding Mjolnir) had them destroy all the brainless Spider-Man clones before moving on to the next big challenge.

WEB OF SHADOWS

Back in 2008, Activision decided to go all in on the whole symbiote thing by making a Spider-Man video game based entirely around a symbiote invasion and symbiote-possessed versions of different heroes and villains. A fight with Venom led to Spider-Man getting some of the goop onto himself, allowing him the option to become Symbiote Spider-Man. Venom’s symbiote started expanding and latching onto hundreds of other New Yorkers, overwhelming the city with chaos.

After teaming up with and/or fighting lots of Marvel characters, Spider-Man took on a kaiju version of Venom and convinced Eddie Brock to fights its influence. Depending on factors, Venom would either die from heroic sacrifice or Spider-Man’s hands.

There are various endings based both on how much time you’ve used the symbiote and how much of an overall dick you’ve been. Too much of the black costume could at best cause Mary Jane to break up with you. At worst, it could cause you to conquer New York as leader of the symbiotes.

VENOMVERSE

Since Marvel did the Spider-Verse comic event, Cullen Bunn and Iban Coello did a natural knockoff of sorts called Venomverse. While it had no real connection to the Spider-Man story, the gist was similar: various Venom hosts from the multiverse had to team up to face a threat that was hunting them down.

The mainstream Venom was the only Eddie Brock host involved as the rest of the crew included the likes of Mary Jane, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Rocket Raccoon, Deadpool, Gwenpool, and so on. There was also a Spider-Man in there and while they didn’t go too far into his background, he was the only one who seemed to recognize Eddie and harbored unexplained resentment.

The threat came in the form of Poisons. These tiny, white creatures on their own didn’t seem to be much of a threat, but when one would make physical contact with a symbiote and its host, it would engulf them and completely take over. The Poison, the symbiote, and the host would turn into some kind of white, armored creature permanently.

Spider-Man was one of those to fall victim to the Poisons. This led to a rather cathartic fight to the death between Venom and Poison Spider-Man that Venom won.

Now, you might be saying, “Didn’t you JUST talk about a story where Spider-Man was a symbiote monster called Poison already? Isn’t this confusing?” Yes. Yes it is. So confusing that when they released a Marvel Legends figure for Poison Spider-Man from Venomverse, the profile information on the back of the box described the story from What If? The Other instead. Whoops!

DC Rebirth In Review - The Young And The Violent

Here is the 4th part of my DC Rebirth In Review series, where i take a look back at the good and the bad of DC’s Rebirth initiative in the wake of the news that they are dropping the Rebirth banners in December. To read my previous posts just click these links:

In this part, i will be talking about The Young And The Violent. Basically a snappy way of categorising series such as Teen Titans and Suicide Squad. So let’s get to it!

Titans - Coming off of the back of Titans Hunt and DC Universe Rebirth #1, Wally West the original Kid Flash and The Flash in his own right returns to the fold and finds his old friends Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Donna Troy (Wonder Girl), Garth (Tempest), Roy Harper (Arsenal) and Lilith Clay (Omen) to find out the mystery of Rebirth, who stole the missing time from the universe and who was responsible for Wally’s disappearance? Written by Aquaman’s Dan Abnett and art by former Flash penciller Brett Booth, Titans is one of the stronger titles in DC that honestly makes you wonder why they didn’t make it a bi-monthly title. Readers that love Wally West will be thrilled as much as the fans of the original Teen Titans as it feels like the group have been together much longer than we know they have been currently. While Booth offers consistent artwork, his frantic and detailed style of pencils might be a headache for some people but it doesn’t distract from a well made series. - 9/10

Teen Titans - Just like Supergirl, the Teen Titans comic book takes some lessons in synergy from the popular Justice League vs. Teen Titans animated movie that came out last year and sees Damian Wayne’s Robin team up with Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven, as well as adding new recruits in Wally West II AKA the new Kid Flash and later on Jackson Hyde, who will later become Aqualad. The comic is written by Green Arrow’s Ben Percy but unlike the fan-service laden G.A Rebirth he chooses to make his own way with the new Teen Titans by exploiting Damian’s inability to do things like a normal person. It works well too, he forces the recruits together and they end up bonding under the idea that while he can make them better heroes, he’s also a bit of a dweeb and is the target of their ire. The artwork by Jonboy Meyers and later Khoi Pham is well detailed and looks like something straight out of an animation feature. Whether you were a fan of the animated movie or love a more classic Titans comic, this will be the book you want to check out. The only thing that holds it back is the annoyance of crossovers, with 2 so far and another to come in December, and considering the series only has 13 issues to date, it stunts the story telling opportunities for the writer. - 7.5/10

Blue Beetle - On the surface the premise of this book is solid, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes, both Blue Beetle in their own right, working together for the first time. It doesn’t really work that well though as it feels like Giffen and Kolins want to tell stories about Justice League 3001 and Doctor Fate instead, which is fine but that’s not what i’m paying for. I would personally avoid buying this book, it has very little promise but might interest you if you like Ted. - 2/10

Deathstroke - If you aren’t reading this book already, you really should be. Christopher Priest is a comic book veteran and after 10 years away from the big 2 he came back to work on Deathstroke because the character wasn’t black and as an African-American he didn’t want to be pigeon-holed as a “black writer”. The narrative of Deathstroke is complex but full of intrigue and substance too, Priest clearly understands the nuances of such a complicated man and uses them well but the plot itself is devious and cunning, almost like you are reading a cross between a George RR Martin book and a great spy novel. The quality of Priest’s work on this series has earned him a promotion of sorts to being the new regular writer on Justice League, and if that isn’t an indicator of his talent then i don’t know what is. - 10/10

Harley Quinn - With Rebirth being a tale of bringing back what people love about their favourite characters, it was difficult for DC to really do anything to Harley Quinn because the series is one of their best sellers and Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti have worked on it since the beginning, so changing the status quo didn’t seem necessary. The only problem with that in my opinion is that the series has stagnated and become rather stale. The supporting cast of Harley’s world is brought in closer than ever in order to battle the Mayor of New York City but it feels rather predictable as a story. A new creative team is taking over soon, with Frank Tieri (formerly of Invincible Iron Man and Wolverine) writing and Inaki Miranda (recently of Batgirl) doing art duties, so maybe a change will come sooner rather than later. The series needs it. - 5/10

Suicide Squad - Since the movie last Summer, this book has sold rather well for DC but it’s not exactly a deserving one. The problem isn’t Rob Williams the writer but the way DC has managed the series. When the creative team was first announced it was with the big news that DC co-publisher and legendary artist Jim Lee doing the artwork, but with his other duties at the company and with the twice monthly schedule he was unable to commit to the series fully. Instead of the average 20 pages per issue, Suicide Squad was left with only 12 from Jim Lee and the other 8 being from backup artists doing a backup story from Rob Williams. With this and the average crossover with the Justice League in January, this series has spluttered out of the gate. The more recent issues post Jim Lee have been better but with more crossovers to come it feels like Rob Williams can’t catch a break and tell the stories he wants. Publisher politics aside, the series takes notes from the movie by copying the Squad roster and returning Amanda Waller into the thicc woman she was before, and while the book is certainly more light and funny than the movie, the synergy for the best part works quite well. - 4/10

The Hellblazer - After the excellent Constantine DC You series by Doyle, Tynion and Rossmo, The Hellblazer fails to keep the magic going with extremely flat story telling and questionable artwork. The book has so far taken 12 issues to tell the story about ancient magical beings called Djinn returning but not once do you feel that there is any relative danger to Constantine or that anything serious could happen. Also the story itself feels detached from what is going on in DC right now, others have mysteries and larger picture things going on and others have guest stars and cameos galore, but apart from one appearance by Shazam and another couple by Swamp Thing, you would be hard pressed to believe this takes place in the same universe as the other on-goings. Tim Seeley has stepped in for a guest arc on the series and has improved the quality, but the issues by Simon Oliver and Moritat should be avoided at all costs. - 2/10

Conclusions

A few missteps aside, the remainder of Rebirth’s catalogue has been good for DC and even those missteps are getting course corrections in new creative teams. I do believe that more work needs doing however, a Young Justice series with Tim Drake, Conner Kent and Cassie Sandsmark needs to happen and more magical based books such as Zatanna or Shazam need to happen too.

With the return of the Young Justice animated series as well as the upcoming Teen Titans TV series, we might get more of a focus on the teenage heroes of DC soon, and with the new Shazam movie going into production we shouldn’t be too surprised if the original Captain Marvel returns to the fold.

Vietnam is preparing for TERROR ATTACKS

More than 4,000 units of police, tanks, police dogs and others responded to different mock scenarios in an anti-terror exercise in downtown #Saigon on Sunday.

Burning cars and vehicles are dealt with during the exercise.

In District 1, the hypothetical situation has hundreds of people driving motorcycles, holding long sticks and banners, screaming and attacking state officials.

Security forces spray water cannons and disperse the crowd. Meanwhile, the sound of explosions and gunfire could be heard. Within a radius of nearly one square kilometer, the streets of Hai Ba Trung - Nguyen Dinh Chieu - Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Nguyen Du - Pham Ngoc Thach and Le Duan in District 1 and District 3 are blocked for the drill to take place.

im still wondering what's gonna happen and why/if it is a limited-time event, the 1st event with albedo did give some lore about dragonspine but it didn't feature albedo going ballistic and some chara potentially dying lmao but we'll see!!!! im extremely excited tbh

Designing Adobe’s Brand Illustration Style

The process of building an overarching graphic illustration style for Adobe products

Context

Illustrations are emerging as a vital part of the user experience, as they help express the brand directly into a product. At Adobe, we’ve had a lot of important discussions around the need for a unified brand illustration style. As our products evolve, we want to make sure we’re building better brand recognition with our users, and build deeper connections between user and product.

As you may have gathered from past articles by my teammates (such as Sonja Hernandez’s brand system article and Anny Chen’s filetype icon case study), there are a lot of considerations to take into account for a product landscape as big as ours. Adobe’s offering includes over 100 products, services, and communities, from creative tools to communication and marketing tools. How do we provide a creative and playful illustration style which can scale to a company and product lineup like Adobe’s?

A brief history of illustrations in Adobe products

Before we started exploring color illustration in our products, our Icon team had already established a more linear illustration style in 2016, which is still widely used in our products. These linear illustrations are typically used for informative contexts, in areas like empty states and user onboarding flows.

Initially, we wanted to integrate this linear style created by icon designer, Marco Mueller, with our new brand illustration system to make the transition between these two areas as seamless as possible. I tried adding figures interacting with the linear elements to create stories. The style of these original figures was actually inspired by the illustration used on the Acrobat 5.0 packaging way back in 2001.

We had several internal discussions about this style after its first release — Khoi Vinh, principle designer at Adobe, raised some concerns regarding the visual identity. Regardless of its interesting historical origin, this approach used a combination of vector shapes and human figure, which has been widely used in the tech industry. So our team decided to revisit this project and explore other directions.

I was honored to collaborate with a remarkable illustrator and artist at Adobe, Kyle Webster, for this project. This time around, we set out with a few goals for the illustration style: We wanted to demonstrate Adobe’s commitment to world-class illustration through creativity and playfulness. The illustrative language needed to allow for variety within the style, so that it may be expanded over time across the system of products and messaging, and allow for additional illustrators to contribute. We also wanted it to feel unique to Adobe, and not “owned” by another company.

First, Kyle tried to see if we could add more visual elements to help enhance the existing illustration style. As you can see, he added more personality to the figures by including skin color, details in clothing style, and shadows to bring more depth to the characters.

“While it was fun to see how far I could push the style away from the original source material, while retaining a more traditional human form in the drawings, it became apparent that this direction would not be as flexible as we wanted, nor would it give us room to really play and experiment. I’m glad we changed direction and Emma did a wonderful, thorough exploration that set us on the right path to develop a unique and adaptable visual vocabulary.” — Kyle Webster

As Kyle stated, this initial exploration was still pretty close to the original style, and after a few more brainstorming sessions, we decided to move even further away from the standard human figure to explore a more abstract visual vocabulary.

It’s time to ditch the trend…

We exist in a software landscape where illustrations are becoming more uniformed and — for the lack of a better word — generic. Often, illustrators are removing personal, creative characteristics of people in their illustrations in order to capture a wide diversity of people. They focus a lot on figures, and don’t experiment a lot on how to express their ideas more abstractly.

In Meg Robichaud’s inspiring article, You Can’t Just Draw Purple People and Call it Diversity, she discusses the inclusive issues of in-product illustrations. I wanted to shift the focus away from trying to represent human diversity in every single illustration, and in doing so open up different possibilities for expressing the same user concepts through abstract shapes instead.

Establishing principles and exploration

Illustration is an intuitive and subjective art form, which can make it challenging to translate into a systematic language that works across multiple platforms and products.

In order to experiment and define a new style, I restrained my explorations with four tenants:

Texture

Shapes

Color

I’ll spend some time here talking about each, and guiding you through some examples.

Human forms and perspective

Including human forms can build an immediate connection with users, but to what level can we abstract those forms and still connect? Do we always need to have fully concrete figures involved? Do we need to include perspective details, such as shadow and dimension?

Side profile explorations

Inspired by the style of Ancient Egyptian art , where the heads are painted in profile with little to no shading, I tried a series of side profiles and arm/hand combinations that could be assembled in different ways to tell stories.

Texture

Kyle’s explorations of textures

Texture is another great way to bring these shapes to life and give them a human touch that adds personality and a distinct style. Kyle curated a series of brushes that could generate a subtle but intriguing texture in the illustrations. We played with a range of texture styles and compositions outlined in the above study. Ultimately, we preferred the openness and airy look of Option A in terms of composition, but also liked the brush stroke effects in Option E and how it was integrated with the forms. From there, we decided to combine the two styles and keep exploring.

Shapes

Shapes play a huge role in our design principles, and they also help connect this new style with the more informative illustrations that were developed earlier. Coming from a background in graphic design, I wanted to experiment with mixing geometric elements into our style to create a minimal and contemporary look. I’ve always been inspired by Suprematism and Constructivism, two significant art movements and philosophies in graphic design. Both art movements focus heavily on using basic geometric forms and the importance of composition to create an impactful visual design.

Shapes I used in the illustrations

Colors

Colors can strengthen the connection between illustrations and a product, so we generated color palettes that were based off of the product’s brand color theme and then included additional colors that would complement the main colors. We wanted to allow for more flexibility in color combinations, and so the additional colors are open to the designer to pick and choose what makes the most sense for each illustration. The only other guideline we provide around color is how they are layered, so the darkest color is only ever used for line work and figures. The medium and light colors are for solid shapes and background.

Defining the visual language

Storytelling and Abstraction Level

To find the right visual language for telling a story, I tried to assemble the elements I talked above. Below are some examples from the early exploration.

At this stage, I was trying find the sweet spot of line, texture, and shape combination in each illustration that would be visually interesting enough and still feel balanced to the eye:

The goal was to have a clear definition between foreground and background, layers and dimension, and to create unexpected and interestingly arranged interactions between lines and shapes that would reinforce the messages.
