It is interesting how different lighting this bathroom has here. I almost didn't recognise that it was the same bathroom ray cried in, it if was not for the tub's shape. Last two shots Ray was in a dark place and hence the bathroom was so eerie, compared to that this scene so full of warmth and feels so soothing, maybe how ray is feeling at that moment

Only Friends OST | Khaotung Thanawat 'Let's Try' MV (Ray x Sand Focus)

UGH they're going to ruin my life. I feel the hysteria amping up folks. A few things:

First's infamous big soft, pining heart eyes will never fail to be one of my favourite things ever. The gentle admiration in that expression is so soft, but I can also feel his heart racing.

The depth of despair, disappointment and anger on Sand's face in second left broke my poor heart. That man is hurting.

Khaotung ready to sweep all the awards for his acting in that 2 second clip alone. I'm genuinely scared to find out what's going on in that scene because the emotion is so incredibly raw.

Are they dead ass staring into each other's eyes unflinchingly whilst Sand's hand drifts below Ray's waistband to graze at his tattoo?! Holy mother of god. (I know everyone's thinking it, but if there's something more going on there, I'll die on the spot).

Ray's hand reaching for Sand across the pillow? Were they holding hands before they slept? Or did his hand drift over whilst sleeping?

There has been ongoing discussion of Only Friends amongst a few of us about central themes of the show and ideas Jojo seems to be exploring. We ended up in a discussion on ephemerality that led to a broader discussion on what the show is trying to say about permanency, mostly through the use of things like Boston's photography, surveillance videos, and other audio/visual means.

We also touched on the idea of voyeurism being a running theme (potentially tying back to the very public nature of queer culture in the 80's and 90's) based on the different medias being presented and the frameworks that each episode has used so far. I posited at the time that the different frameworks of each episode could be a type of voyeurism (and because we've brought up control), a type of controlled voyeurism; the voice overs, talking heads and even the Twitter posts are great for giving the audience insight into character insights, feelings and emotions but only what they want us to see.

There was also discussion in the tag about how this show feels like a throwback to sort of a late 90's aesthetic over all (I can't find this post - specifically I'm thinking of a post that mentioned OF had a very Dawson's Creek aesthetic, which hit me like a truck when I read it because YES). Given that Jojo was born in 1984, so I think this post about OF being the voice of 80's babies is right.

So, you must be asking, duh, we've already talked about this. What's your point?

All of this extremely prolific long-windedness is because I noticed something while watching the Let's Try MV from the OST as well as the BTS videos that have been released so far and I don't think anyone has mentioned it.

In the MV, shots from the show (both what appear to be canon and a smidge of BTS material) are shown like they were filmed on a mid-90's camcorder. This also happens in the in the BTS videos as well (episode 1, episode 2.)

Also, both the MV and the BTS videos have visual effects. Transitions like lens flares, static, and whatever that blippy line distortion was on VHS tapes that we fixed with the tracking buttons (if you know, you know) repeatedly show up in both.

(Please prepare yourself for some absolutely horrible screenshots; I have no skills in this area, lmao, but I wanted a couple of visuals)

(What? No, I didn't choose these three screenshots because of the colors, absolutely not. I also absolutely am not tagging @respectthepetty because of it either, nope. Don't know what you're talking about.)

But Slayerkitty, you ask, what does it mean?

It definitely shows that we're on the right track regarding this, I think, because using it in the MV and BTS materials is a very deliberate choice given the amount of photo, video, and audio focus the show has done to this point. Interestingly, you could also say the BTS videos are a type of controlled voyeurism as well, since it's a specific peek at how things were made (the view they want us to have lol).

(Also interesting but I'm not sure if it means anything or if they just thought it looked cool, but in the MV from about 2:29-2:40 and 2:52-3:10 the scenes are all "camcorder" video and the second time stamp is pretty much all BTS footage.)

(P.S. I also don't think anyone mentioned it before now, but that fluffy jacket/cardigan thing we're all obsessed with that Ray wore in episode two is what Khaotung is wearing the MV. It looks like they probably shot the episode two car scene and the MV the same day/night.)

This is from a media analysis standpoint, not a criticism of the actors. I love absolutely all the actors in Only Friends. They are legitimately all of my faves. Please, if you don't understand why media analysis exists, I'm not the blog for you.

I'm almost shocked that so far we have gotten filthier kisses from ForceBook and NeoMark. Almost.

And you know what? GOOD FOR FirstKhaotung for having boundaries and keeping to them if that's what was the cause. I'm good with that. Khaotung said it was hard to play / act that scene. (ref: Twitter Space 8/19 translation from FKT OFC, by @/_SB95X)

I had a mild suspicion that they would be the ones that wouldn't get super filthy and I think they will continue to be US weeknight TV appropriate.

The struggle with that scene is evident. There are 21 cuts in 36 seconds. That's... A lot. P'Jojo says that, "This couple gives a rock vibe so their sex scene was not that smooth." (ref: same Twitter space, same translation, same user.)

Now I love P'Jojo but that's an absolutely absurd explanation for these cuts. They aren't jump cuts like you'd get in a MV or similar sequence. They're trying to look smooth.

What I think is the explanation was put forward by my friend, the ever fabulous @crowie. Here is a screenshot of the fan translation of that same Space:

P'Jojo wasn't on set that day, and I'm not sure P'Ninew was either. Luckily, with everything being digital, you can film for 20 minutes of mess and cut the best parts together, which is what looks like might have been done with this. And that's a blessing. It's still a mess, and really, there's two camps here and it's fine if you like it!

As predicted, First is absolutely about to combust. I also do not remember Khaotung's tattoo being that high, so those jeans might just be indecently low waisted.

Not a fan of the song they chose for them, but you can't win the soundtrack lottery all the time, either.

I saw someone on Twitter call their scene the hottest makeout scene in a BL ever and... Champs. It was good. You know what? Their scene in Our Skyy 2 might have actually been hotter. It definitely was not the hottest thing that's been put to digital media for BL.

Yes we love FirstKhaotung, but we can't let that get in front of what is actually going on, you know? We need to be impartial when we're doing analysis here.

YMMV, obviously. Feel free to tell me why it was the hottest thing with supporting evidence other than because.
