Just finished Sword Catcher and I am LIVING for the Jem and Will dynamic that Kel and Conor have like asdfghjkll I see what you did there CC

Kel, like Jem is precious and deserves all the world and I will protect him with my life i-

Lin is an absolute queen and I am cheering her on like nothing else

I like Conor and Kel's dynamic but oh god he's a fucking ass to everyone else. Will was trying to be cruel on purpose because of his curse, but Conor is just a fucking jerk. I love how Lin deals with him but he has a looong way to go. Hopefully he pulls a Darcy and gets his head out of his ass.

I also like Falconet? I guess? For now, at least. Antonetta is pretty cool too ngl but all the other Charter folks are... worthy of being stabbed, let's say. Especially Charlon.

So many unanswered questions and we're going to have to wait a whole year to get any answers

Sword Catcher thoughts/theories

I really enjoyed this book, wasn’t sure I was going to read it until it came out and decided to give it a try. Being a big fan of Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter books I wasn’t sure how I would like reading a different world from her but it was so well written and the characters really draw you in and I’m invested now lol and already needing the second book!

Now I’ve got some thoughts or theories on some stuff that left me with ??? 🤔 (spoilers below)

There is some mystery with the King. And before I get to my possible theory, maybe someone can refresh my memory but I can’t remember if they specifically said if Jolivet (being the captain of the arrow squadron) was the kings sword catcher or not? The tradition with the sword Catcher wasn’t new with Kel and Connor, it was a Malgasi tradition that the king grew up in. It was mentioned that once Connor married and had his own kid, Kel would then lead the squadron and eventually have to find a new sword catcher for the new prince and basically the tradition continues. But if that’s the case wouldn’t that mean jolivet was the kings sword catcher? Again maybe I missed it and they had mentioned it but I can’t remember top of my head, but if they didnt, that leaves the mystery of who the kings sword Cather was which then leads to my theory…..

The king is apparently mad/ill but later on in the book he has this great strength that isn’t normal which makes me wonder how? What if he isn’t the original king? What if the entire time he was the kings sword catcher having never taken off the talisman and it could have had an affect on him driving him a little mad and giving him some side effects (weird strength).

It crossed my mind when towards the end of the book Connor left that note and Kel had to be him at the party to save face. With all the mystery around what happened with the king especially with Fausten…

Anyways random but a guess

Also does anyone else think Jerrod is Kel’s friend from the orphanage? Idk something about him seeing kel’s face and not killing him gave me the thought even though later on when asked about it he just gives another excuse. Plus he has a part of his face hidden so maybe Kel wouldn’t be able to see if it possibly could have been him, idk I feel like characters being someone different then who they were is a feeling a lot of people have with this book having seen some theories others have had on who the ragpicker king is or beck

15 Reasons to read Sword Catcher

1 - DRAMA, no one stopped Cassie so she had an opportunity to show off. Royal intrigues, criminal secrets, whispers of forbidden magic which is about to return

2 - bisexuals💙💜lgbtqia took over this book and refuse to leave, good for them

3 - perfect multilevel world-building, CC spent lots of time exploring historical materials, complicated fantasy series and it shows. Makes your brain work, which is always a plus

4 - Will/Jem vibes between Kel/Conor🥺

5 - enemies to lovers to enemies to— they're driving me INSANE

6 - POC characters, two of the main characters have brown skin, the queen has black skin, lots of characters whose appearance is probably inspired by people from the Middle East. Asian killer girl, my beloved🫶✨

7 - Political games, if you loved Game of Thrones/ House of the Dragon/ ARCANE, you'd love this one too!

8 - A high delusional society coexisting with a much poorer majority. Provocative grotesque parties/ fancy balls VS Brutally beautiful criminal city/ local dance holidays with magical roots

9 - The main girl is apparently Cordelia/Catarina's lovechild. She came here to show her dangerous dance skills and heal you🤗. Everyone is scared of her and she's scared of her weird dreams about sex & apocalypse🤔

10 - Main character being a sweet silly cinnamon roll...but like "randomly criminal whore" edition. He's either too smart or too silly & horny, no in the middle. Always kind🌻savage little marshmallow that needs to be held and protected

11 - Glittery outfits, Bridgerton X Euphoria? Marie Antoinette X Great Gatsby?

12 - Magic, necromancy 🔮🪦 Magic was common centuries ago until it became too powerful and destructive, which is yay for me, but for some reason, no-no for everyone else. The last battle between enemies/lovers and boom👁️👁️the land was destroyed, magic is gone. Which is what legends say. BUT IS IT GONE THOUGH🤨

13 - "I know we've just tried to kill each other/threatened to kill, I know this is our third meeting, but what about a kiss?👉👈" AND IT'S ABOUT AT LEAST TWO COUPLES

14 - You know that character, who's like mysterious✨ minor/third main character✨he lives in an emo mansion and feeds all stray kittens🫶and everyone who bothered him was killed brutally or disappeared under mysterious circumstances for some reason...oh these silly little coincidences☺️

Clare’s departure from the Shadowhunter world is sure to make its mark in the adult fantasy genre.

“Sword Catcher” follows Kel, an orphan turned Sword Catcher (the body double of the Prince of Castellane) and Lin Caster, a physician and one of the Ashkar possessing magical abilities. After a failed assassination attempt brings the two outcasts together—they are drawn into the web of the mysterious Ragpicker King, the criminal ruler of Castellane’s underworld—and find themselves at the center of world-altering change.

The element of romance takes a backseat to Clare’s immersive world-building. She provides the reader with detailed descriptions surrounding the region of Castellane—the walled city of the Ashkar, the Ragpicker King’s Black Mansion, Marivent from which the royal family rules, and the mountains and ocean bordering the kingdom—as well as neighboring regions she makes distinctive from one another. Additionally, she goes into depth about the role of the charter families of Castellane in relation to the monarchy, the beliefs of the Ashkar, the kingdom’s rich history and politics, and the diverse cultures making up the diverse populace. I especially like how she used excerpts from ancient texts at the beginning of each chapter as a means of foreshadowing and filling in any gaps in understanding. While I must admit that I was overwhelmed at times, I am more so impressed by how elaborate and intricate Clare’s world is.

Of the two points-of-view the story alternates between, I really enjoyed Lin’s perspective the most. Because she is one of the Ashkar, she gives the reader great insight on Clare’s magic system, which is fascinating in and of itself. I found myself rooting for her in her aims because of her selfless nature, fierce determination, and inner strength. Kel, on the other hand, was less compelling to me as a character. While his role as a Sword Catcher is certainly intriguing, I was more interested in the narratives of side characters like the Ragpicker King and brooding Prince Conor.

The ending, however, more than makes up for my criticisms. In true Cassandra Clare fashion, my jaw was on the floor and I have been left to suffer until book two comes out.

Anyone who says Kel and Conor are like Will and Jem is lying. Their relationship looks high-key toxic, what with the power imbalance.

Poor Kel was brainwashed into belittling himself, because he was Conor's Sword Catcher and always needed to be beside Conor so that Conor could be fine and Conor, Conor, Conor.

Meanwhile, it is obvious that Conor cares about Kel, but he's far from considerate of his needs and he's kinda manipulative, albeit unconsciously. After all, he was bred into the idea that the world should revolve around him.

Will and Jem were nothing like them. For once, they stood in as equal a ground as was possible lol. If any pair in Sword Catcher should be like them, then it's Lin and Mariam. Ffs, Mariam is even dying and Lin is pouring her whole being into finding a cure and being there for her always.

remember the 'forbidden love' mentioned in Sword Catcher's synopsis? while reading (even though Antonetta is there too and living rent-free in Kel's mind) I really expected the forbidden love to be between Kel and the Ragpicker King (right) like Lin and Conor are such an enemies-to-lovers ship, I forgot for a sec that their love is also forbidden
