Note
Fun fact, Nakaya was one of the first people wanting a character to be resurrected and was the first one to come up with a "Nishiki lives" au where he's badly injured but survived. Masayoshi was not amused lol (breaks my Nishiki loving heart honestly we can't stop taking Ls :( ) source: https://yakuzafan.com/dengeki-online-interview-with-takaya-kuroda-kazuma-kiryu-and-kazuhiro-nakaya-nishikiyama-kasuga-ichiban-and-their-15-year-history-with-ryu-ga-gotoku/

Yakuza games kanji info 4
Ichiban Kasuga (春日 一番, Kasuga Ichiban)
Tumblr media
Our friendly neighborhood hero.
春 kasu = springtime, spring (season)
日 ga = day, sun
一 ichi = one
番 ban = turn, number in a series
- About his family name: spring is the season when everything blooms. In Y7 we follow Ichiban’s story as he reaches his true potential (like the dragonfish he has on his back.) The ‘sun‘ part might be related to his friendly and cheerful personality. The people he helps must certainly consider him a bright ray of sun.
Quick edit - Nice information about seasons from japanese-names.info: “For Japanese people spring is not only the season of warmth, flowers and fresh green leaves, but also of the ending and beginning of the chapter of life because the school year and fiscal year end in March and begin in April.“
- From the Yakuza Wiki: "Kasuga was given the name 'Ichiban' (一番, lit. 'number one' in the context of being the best) by executive director Toshihiro Nagoshi and lead writer Masayoshi Yokoyama. They decided on the name due to its contrast with his background and lifestyle being emblematic of Kasuga as a character, who '[lives life] to the fullest like he doesn't see the irony.'"
- The protagonist of the first turn-based game in the franchise has the kanji for ‘turn‘ in his name. If you play with Japanese audio you can hear Ichiban announcing his turn (”ore no ban.”)
Extra - His voice actor, Kazuhiro Nakaya, also has the kanji 一 in his name, but with a diferent pronunciation:
( 一 kazu) 中谷 一博, Nakaya Kazuhiro
Extra 2 - Adachi also has the kanji 一 with the same pronunciation:
( 一 ichi) 足立 宏一, Adachi Kōichi
Extra 3 - Kiryu has the kanji 一 but with a different pronunciation:
( 一 kazu) 桐生 一馬, Kiryū Kazuma

Hi Tenno! You know a lot about the innerworkings of RGG so I was wondering if you have any cool info on Nakaya to share? I'm a huge Ichiban\Nishiki fan but I haven't seen anyone talk about the stuff he says in the streams or videos or anything like that. Has he ever talked about his characters or shared anything interesting about them? Thank you!
I wish I did, because he definitely has! I've always known him to be a incredible actor who's perfectly in-sync with his characters and the studio's ethos, and his enthusiasm for the series simply sparks joy. In my experience, he's always got insightful questions and commentary.
Unfortunately, I find it kind of daunting to actively research protagonists/recurring major characters and that extends to voice actors. Most of what I know about Nishiki and Ichiban comes from the staff. I've got some Nakaya clips here and there, but they're very short and light on substance; nothing that's really to my usual standard. Although, of course, I plan on sharing those too!
So, tell you what, send me another ask sometime and I'll get back to you once I've done my homework! Thank you for your interest!
