A reference for my most current look of Kaz and his outfit. Simplified quite a bit of him including his patterns underneath.
After the "Keep Reading" is the pattern reference sans clothes, nothing explicit it's just a null Kaz (this is the closest you'll ever see me draw a naked Kaz btw).

Inkbolt (2016)
This pre-reboot version of the comic is a superhero, cartoon action webcomic by a user named KazJester.
The story takes place in the city of Inkswell where, for some unknown reason, humans have found themselves teleported into the toon world, where everyday they’re at the mercy of a lot of violent and fight-happy toons. While some humans have acclimated over time, most spend their time being at odds with antagonistic toons that seemingly is getting worse with more powerful toons arriving in. Lucky for many, a human named Tomás has decided to rise up and become a protector for the humans as he dons his alter-ego Inkbolt, a powerful wolf toon given to him by an inkblot named Blot. It’s a tough job, but he seems to enjoy it enough.
This old version of the comic was a decently visual marvel that is unfortunately held back by some glaring issues. It tries too hard to be a serious story, which is something the author actually regrets, and has surprisingly uninteresting dialogue for a hectic comic about cartoons punching each other. While the artwork, as said before, is a visual marvel (it tries really hard to look like a manga), it could’ve done better with the look of the characters, mainly the humans. The creator was definitely still in his early-to-mid Work Sucks phase with the designs.
The comic can be read through this archive from the main Inkbolt site.
I can see this being a prelude to the reboot sure.

I want to get into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but where do I even start? There's multiple series at the moment and sometimes different names, but I'd be cool with starting with the most modern retelling from the start. Any recommendations?
Phantom Blood is your best bet, it’s the first story arc! Battle Tendency is second, Stardust Crusaders is third (my favourite so far!), they all establish some continuity and concepts, I haven’t read further than part four (Diamond Is Unbreakable) You can watch the anime on crunchyroll, the second episode of Diamond is Unbreakable just came out on Friday. x3 (some context: for the longest time JJBA hasn't had an anime adaptation, there have been OVAs based on Stardust Crusaders and a film adaptation of Phantom Blood but other than that, no TV anime until a few years ago! so yeah, for a while it was one of the longest-running manga series without an anime adaptation.)
But yeah other than that, since I haven’t gotten to the latest series yet, I can’t vouch for anything. I think from Steel Ball Run (part 7) onwards the story is set up in a separate continuity/universe than prior installments, and since I haven’t read it I have no idea whether having read prior installments is useful or detracting.
Can any other JoJo fans who are caught up fill in?

When people write short stories/fiction about worlds and characters that already are established, and even art exists of them, do you feel a lot of prose is necessary to set up the setting or describe the characters? Can an author just jump into it? I guess for example, if you were to write stories about your own Housepet characters, how would you go about it?
It depends on the context. If I have any reason to believe the audience needs setup, such as people jumping onboard with this story, then setup is pretty necessary.
If on the other hand you know that only people who are already familiar are going to read it, such as when I wrote (with another guy) the story in the back of Book 2 of Housepets, less is necessary. If only because that story comes IMMEDIATELY after the comics needed to introduce it.
Even then, I still did a setup for the sake of that story’s plot. Setup is always going to be a good idea, to help paint a picture and define the plot. It’s rarely a bad idea to include setup.
Ideally, make the setup fun too, both for new readers and familiar. ‘Show don’t tell’ applies!

Part one of a commission for KazJester. Three friends stumble upon a strange living artifact in the middle of their living spaceship, which immediately attempts to suck them up, their toes clinging to the squishy floor as the wind begins to pull them in. Guess what happens next???

Inkbolt*
A webcomic made by Kazjester (yes him again). It's a simple plot about a human named Tomàs (or Toma) who after finding and playing a lost VHS tape from Acres, a cartoon creator who has disappeared from the real and toon world, ends up being sucked into the long gone creators toon world Quill by the creator's mascot Blot. Now in this world, Toma must master his new toon form given to him by the tape and get strong enough to fend for himself in this wacky toon world where toons love to fight and cause mischief with each other. This contains toon peril, transformations and creative imagery.
*If you ever decide to read this, it must be known that the current Inkbolt is a reboot of the author's original short run back in 2016 which has a different plot (humans find themselves sent into a toon world and must survive as they lack the squash and stretch ability the toons have) with some of the same elements and ideas taken from it.
What is this, Ralph Bakshi's Cool World? It does sound like it has potential, though it does suck when you have to start your comic from scratch all over again.
