Gabriel Lane Herondale loathed the snow. From the slush that covered his loafers, to the dampness that matted his hair, to neverending chill that seeped into his bones from the weather, he despised it. His dearest claimed it was pretty, and perhaps it was, but only when enjoyed inside surrounded by working heat, warm tea, and no reason to leave.

Today, though, he found himself waiting at a bus stop while large billowy flakes coated his hair and aggravated his already tumultuous cold. One gloved hand clasped across his body as it tried desperately to retain the bit of warmth his coat brought; the other clutching his soddened handkerchief, which hovered mere inches from his red nose.

Sniffling, Gabriel's droopy tired eyes staring forward, trying not to think about how cold he was waiting for this god forsaken bus.

His breath hitched hard, his eyes squeezed shut as wet congested sneeze erupted into his waiting handkerchief. He'd not even had time to draw another breath before a second then a third followed, each ripping the back of his throat. Gabriel cupped his cloth around his nose, giving a clogged blow that brought little relief.

It was then Gabriel released he no longer felt snow patting his hair. Looking around, a well dressed man in a black coat was next to him holding an umbrella over Gabriel's head. The professor blinked in exhausted confusion.

The man smiled, "I know it isn't much but it seems any break from the snow might help you."

"Oh!" Gabriel felt a hot blush rush across his face stopping at his ears. "I-I appreciate it, b-but please don't...leave yourself..." Gabriel turned away catching another horrendous sneeze. "Exposed at my own expense." He finished sheepishly.

"I'm fine, I'm sure the bus will be here soon." The man replied.

Gabriel nodded, it did feel nice to be shielded from the persistent snow for now. "I normally stay hidden in my apartment," He paused to rub at his nose, "But my dearest partner is quite ill...as well..." He gave a disheartening sigh. "So I ventured forth for his med..." Gabriel’s face slacked, "his...med...me....ah..." Pinching at his nose did nothing, Gabriel bent forward desperately sneezing twice. As he straightened he felt another embarrassed blush fill his pale face but the man only blessed him.

"Well I hope you both feel better soon." He said as the bus finally approached.

"Yes...thank you and for the shelter." Gabriel said as he climbed aboard, taking a seat near the back so he wouldn't disturb anyone.

Closing his eyes, he leaned against the window, a poor attempt to get some rest before his stop, which he almost missed as he'd drifted off.

Back in the warm of the loft building, Gabriel rushed as best as his lungs could take him to the elevators, he wanted to be back home before Liam realized he'd been gone.

His dearest did so much for him, even though he felt awful, his poor Liam was worse and if helping him meant fighting the winter snow, Gabriel would do it every time.

what are some songs, albums, or artists that you have a strong attachment to?

AHHhHHH omg this is a loaded question because I can go on forever for music (and also thank you for sending me a message that isn’t about lingerie or my face lmao)!!!! I’m going to include some links because I love to be able to share music with people! These are in no particular order – just in order of me thinking about them.

Hollow Knight soundtrack. Christopher Larkin did an AMAZING job composing this soundtrack – and the game is amazing as well (one of the few games, in addition to Shadow of the Colossus, that makes me cry when I think about the ending). My favorite track on it is City of Tears. Check it out!

A lot of the songs and instrumental pieces from the original 1990′s Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon was my dang childhood and inspired me in a lot of things. Some of my favorite tracks:

Instrumental: Princess no tame ni…, Sailor Uranus and Neptune theme, sadness, otome kokoro, holy grail, eternal no ai

Songs: Moon Revenge, Kaze mo sora mo, kitto, Moonlight Densetsu, Senshi no Omoi, Ai dake ga dekiru koto, Ai no Senshi,

Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The first time I heard this song, I was 18 and working my part-time job in a cutlery shop at the mall. Manager let me listen to whatever music I wanted when I did the store openings on the weekend, so I’d always listen to the classical music station. This piece came on and I was so moved that I sped home to download it on Napster and then find a physical copy of it on CD at Tower Records so I could listen to it on repeat for a month.

Marina & the Diamonds “Electra Heart” album. This got me through a particularly bad breakup and I listened to it several times a day. I loved her entire concept for the album and all the art that went into the promotional videos for it. I have a few characters on WoW that are Marina references. Some of my favorite tracks are: Starring Role, Valley of the Dolls, Fear and Loathing, Radioactive … I’m pretty sure at least 10% of my tumblr posts in 2012/13 were Marina-inspired. Such a good era.

The Beatles Eleanor Rigby. I grew up a Beatles fan because my mom was – she had all the vinyls, a bunch of memorabilia.. etc. Something about this song (And the entire Revolver album) gets to me.

WHAM! Last Christmas and Aqua’s Barbie Girl – these are two songs that I have always, and will always, sing my heart out at karaoke.

Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster album. I’m pretty sure that I did a million views alone on that Bad Romance song. Still one of my all-time favorites. Her Born This Way album means a lot to me too, because I listened to it a lot in Mists of Pandaria and that’s probably when I had the most fun w/ my friends and guldies in that game.

Mew - Repeaterbeater is probably one of my top songs from them. My ex (with whom I am still best of friends) introduced me to the band when we started dating in 2009 and like, I felt like I had missed out on life by not hearing of this amazing Danish band til then. I have about 20 CDs/albums from them – a lot of overseas limited prints and hard to find stuff. I really adore this band, and missing their show in SF due to the stomach flu in 2010(?iirc) is one of my biggest regrets. Comforting Sounds, Apocalypso, Am I Wry? No, and Satellites are also in my top songs from them.

The band 30 Seconds to Mars (at least, their A Beautiful Lie) holds a place in my heart because I listened to this a lot during my emo years and played this album a lot while PVPing in Lineage2 and also to and from classes. I’ve probably seen this band the most live – in two different countries as well! I have heard some problematic things about Jared Leto in the past few years that has kind of tarnished my love for the music, but it’s still an album that evokes a lot of emotion for me.

Poe - Haunted. She was one of the first performers I saw at a small venue for the 21+ crowd at a bar up in Orangevale (called The Boardwalk). I thought she was so cool, and bought her most recent album when we saw her. A lot of people may recognize her Hey Pretty song though. (Side note, first ever concert I attended was the Family Values Tour in 2001 w/ my friends in high school – Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Static-X, and Deadsy played.)

Honestly, anything by Patrick Wolf. LOVE HIM. Such a talented musician. Reminds me of one of my closest friends who introduced me to his music. One of my favorite songs by him is Hard Times. His acoustic album Sundark and Riverlight was also amazing, as was the version of The Libertine from it!

Röyksopp - What Else is There? Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife/Fever Ray) has haunting vocals and it pairs so well w/ the music. I pretty much love most of Röyksopp’s stuff, but this song in particular reminds me of a friend I lost contact w/ over a decade ago.

Kings of Convenience - I’d Rather Dance with You. I’m sorry, but this is probably one of the best songs of all time. And, yes, this song was one of autoplay songs on my Myspace forever ago, lmao. Erlend Øye is literally so cool and you will never be as cool as him ok?

Mystery Skulls - Ghost. Man oh man. I remember listening to this on repeat while raiding cuz I was being emo over some guy LMAOOO. But I still really love this song, and the band is awesome as well! I’ve gotten a few of my friends (and my mom!!) into Mystery Skulls! Also — I’M PRETTY SURE ONE OF MY FRIENDS HERE ON TUMBLR WAS THE ONE WHO LINKED ME THIS SONG AND TOLD ME TO CHEER UP.

Deadmau5 - Ghosts n Stuff 2009 was a really good year for me personally, and also a lot of great music was filling my ears that year, including the For Lack of a Better Name album with this track on it. I love Pendulum, so having Rob Swire pair up on this track w/ Deadmau5, to me, was AHHHHmazing.

Janet Jackson - Velvet Rope. A really great song and it had a lot of personal meaning to me back in high school / college. I have always been a huge Janet fan and this came from one of my favorite albums of hers.

Gotye - Heart’s a Mess. I know a lot of people associate him with the popular track Somebody That I Used to Know w/ Kimbra, it’s a great track, don’t get me wrong, but this song is my favorite from him. Another song I listened to frequently through a breakup. I love Gotye’s very Peter Gabriel-esque vocals.

I could actually keep writing for like…. another hour but I will save you guys that and just end it here. Let’s just say I am a VERY auditory person

Character and Lifestyle: Only goes by Noll, he hates his real name. He’s a jerk to most people, quite cold, rude and off putting. Doesn’t like people much. Lives alone in a small studio where he paints at times.

Used to be a pretty famous painter, where he lived the good life until a car accident changed all that.

After his accident he sustained a broken hip and wrist. He couldn't paint nor play piano and suffered from art block after causing many of his investors to pull funding for his shows. He got in massive debt from hospital bills.

General health: Bad hip due to car accident sustained when he was 32(?), uses a cane.

Strengths and Likes: If given a challenge he will try his best to accomplish it espc if he think he’s being tested. Loves art, art history, Impressionism and Abstract Impressionism are his favorites. Loves Jackson Pollock. Loves bourbon.

General health: Due to a fire when he was 20 at his family’s art gallery he suffers from terrible breathing issues and asthma. Is on medication for it as well as inhalers. When he gets sick it normally ends up in his lungs.

Strengths and Likes: Confident, a bit arrogant, book smart and intelligent. Loves art of any kind loves studying art history.

Monthly Manga Review Index: November 2017

In a month that saw the return of Battle Angel Alita and AKIRA, and the manga debut of In This Corner of the World, the most reviewed title was NISIOSIN and Mitsuru Hattori’s Imperfect Girl, an adaptation of a light novel about a sad-sack writer and the weird girl who upends his life. Other popular review subjects included Children of the Whales, Frau Faust, To Your Eternity, and the latest volume of My Hero Academia. Here at The Manga Critic, I reviewed a variety of titles, from horror — Yokai Rental Shop — to science fiction and fantasy — Astra Lost in Space and The Promised Neverland — and reference works — Manga in Theory and Practice: The Craft of Creating Manga.

In the process of casting my net more widely for manga reviews, I discovered two new sites: Lovely Mangas, a website focusing mostly on untranslated series, and J!Ent.online, a pop-culture website with a dedicated manga critic. I was also delighted to see that Alex Hoffman’s Sequential State had a robust select of new-ish manga reviews, all of which I’m ashamed to say I missed when they were first posted. I’ve atoned by adding them to the index, and encourage you to check them out, too.

REVIEWS OF THE MONTH

Brigid Alverson is more journalist than reviewer these days, but when she flexes her critic’s muscles, I always finish her piece thinking, I wish I’d written that! Brigid’s special gift is writing incisive criticism in a conversational style that’s as accessible to the manga n00b as it is the seasoned fan. Most recently, she weighed in on what makes My Hero Academia the best shonen title in the VIZ catalog right now:

If you think the superheroes in My Hero Academia are bonkers, wait till you see the villains! One is a swirl of dark mist, while another seems to be made mostly of hands. (While most artists have a tough time drawing hands, Horikoshi seems to enjoy it, and he even throws in a little hand-creature at the start of each volume.) The villains are after All Might, but they have to get through the students of UA first—and the students prove to be more formidable than they figured.

Honorable mention goes to A Library Girl, whose review of Land of the Lustrous achieved the near-impossible feat of describing what happens in volume one. After reading her take, I might just give this incredibly confusing, ravishingly beautiful series another try.

Character in general: I fucking!! love!! Genji!! He is one of my favs to play and i love to screw off with him whenever im not playing competitive or seriously. He's such a good pure soul and i love him so much... I just,, i love everything about my precious cyborg son. He deserves to be protected at all costs.

How they play them: OK OK OK LISTEN. I really, realy love how you portray genji okay? I mean, fuck dude. Your rps alone- the writing, the length and thought put into them, theyre fucking amazing. But you took Genji, a smol, broken little cyborg man. And you turned him into something beautiful. You are honestly, without a doubt, one of my FAVOURITE rp blogs. Overall Opinion: One of the best genjis i have ever seen, and honestly probably one of the best writers ive seen in my time in rp communities. Everything they do is perfect and i love how much their writing flows and ties together so smoothly. Literally never have i read something of theirs and been like "Wow this is boring". Fucking great as fuck mun, and honestly, if you guys arent following and interacting with them, idk what youre doing with your life.

God I was just saying on discord that I've been thinking of Fessor and allergies and then remembered I had this!

Gabriel blinked his teary eyes as rubbing them caused too much irration. Sniffling hurt almost as much but his poor nose was runny increasingly due to the high pollen count today.

Everytime the wind blew, he could see the flowers blowing off the trees. Sighing, Gabriel pushed open the door to the shop off the main street. Even with his prescription allergy medicine, nothing was bringing relief, so he figured trying to find something over the counter wouldn't hurt.

Barely three steps inside his face slacked, bringing up his arm, he sneezed several times into it; each itchy sneeze, sending prickly pain through his sinuses.

"Dear me." He said softly, wiping his eyes again with his handkerchief. Looking at the small selection of medications, everything they had for sale he already had at home. So the trip wasn't a total loss, Gabriel picked up so cold compress for his eyes and a few other things.

Back at his flat, he found the strongest medicine he had, swallowing them with some water. After rinsing the compress, the professor lay on his couch, cool cloth covering his dry yet tearing eyes and waited for his Liam to call.

Sicktember Alt Prompt: Soft Pajamas

Time to torture Gabriel Lane

The draft blowing through the station sent a shudder through him as Gabriel exited the train. The warmth of the passenger car trailed off as the chill of winter engulfed him. Gabriel groaned, sniffled hard and went to fetch his suitcase.

The train ride back to Davenport after Christmas ached his heart almost as bad as the one leaving for fall semster. The fact he was still in the firm grip of his seasonal cold didn't help either. Usually the time spent with his dearest helped alleviate his symptoms, many times he'd been completely over it before leaving but this year it stuck to his nose and chest fiercely.

The chill wind tickled his beet red nose as Gabriel instinctively covered it with a handkerchief as he stepped out onto the street which headed back to the University.

He barely got three steps before his breath hitched hard, Gabriel didn't bother to pause as he sneezed harshly into his waiting cloth. Another three followed as he inhaled sharply between them, his breath crackling from his cold.

Gabriel moaned, blew his nose and began the depressing walk to his flat.

After dropping his keys twice trudging up the stairs, Gabriel finally entered his flat, walking straight to the heater to turn it back on.

It would still take a full day for the flat to retain any warmth in but at least it was on.

He stared blankly at the the dial before the annoying tickle started again, causing him to sneeze then following it with a raspy cough.

Dropping his coat right on the hallway floor, Gabriel leaned on the wall as he walked into the bedroom, ignoring the pile of clothes laying at the foot of his bed. He opened his suitcase, smiling sofly as he pulled out a pair of blue patterned pajamas, a gift from his Liam for his birthday.

Holding them close he ran the cuff over his cheek, letting out a sad sigh as he imagine Liam stroking his face.

After changing, Gabriel crawled under his covers, sent Liam a quick message saying he'd made it home and would be going to bed.

He thanked him again for the lovely pajamas.

Sicktember Day 9 and 10: Home remedy & Excessive use of tissues handkerchiefs/blow your nose.

~~~

Spring was in the air. Gabriel Lane Herondale despised it.

Looking at the plethora of sodden handkerchiefs littering the few feet which encircled him, Gabriel groaned while clutching one of the last ones he had.

Sniffling, which did little aside from tickle his throat incessantly, he rubbed at his poor redden nose again wishing that his allergy medication actually brought relief.

Even the most intense rubbing did nothing to quell the persistent itch plaguing him since the weather turned warmer.

Gabriel’s raspy breath hitched hard twice before another false start gave way to more rubbing and blowing.

"I'll need...to do laundry soon." He muttered to himself, swallowing thickly. "Near...ly..." His thought broken as the looming sneeze finally broke through sending his nose back with the folds of his handkerchief. His eyes tightly closed as three more followed all in rapid succession.

His breath squeaked with every muffled sneeze, the soft fabric of the handkerchiefs no longer bringing any sort of comfort to the raw edges.

"Oh dear." He sighed, shoulders sagging from what felt like a weight of pollen crushing him. Why couldn’t he simply enjoy spring time like so many others? What he wouldn’t give for strolls with his dearest down by the river or a simple walk to the farmers market. Gabriel had always wanted to buy his Liam flowers, sadly even with medicine, it would be too much of a gamble.

When the itchy congested fit finally passed, Gabriel managed to get himself up, walking into his kitchen looking for a clean bowl to heat up some of the homemade chicken soup left over from when Liam had visited last weekend.

Even if he wasn't a cold fighting a cold, the warm soup made him feel better as he sat amongst his cluttered kitchen table. Gabriel blew his nose several times as he ate as the soup made his poor nose drip even more making the need for clean handkerchiefs even more prevalent.

After rinsing his bowl, Gabriel gathered his cloths and headed down to the laundry.

The rain pelleted against the window of Gabriel’s flat, running in zing zangs down the glass, pooling onto the sill. Another damp wet day hadn't been good for him. The chill he'd had since coming home from class still stuck to his bones like glue to paper.

The thin blanket which always rested on his sofa hung haphazardly over his shoulders, a cluster of wadded up handkerchiefs laid near, a mug of half drunk tea on the table in front of him.

The professor stared idly forward, mouth agape as breathing through his poor reddened nose was next to impossible. He swallowed wincing at the burning in his throat and lessened it with a sip of tea.

A thick sniffle followed as he set the mug down and exhaled, triggering a raucous cough.

"Hey love, I couldn't find any lozenges, seems you went through your last bag when you had that throat infection last February." Liam gave his boyfriend an apologetic look. "Do you want me to run to the store?"

"No." Gabriel said hoarsely, his voice sounding like breaking glass. "I don't want you getting....soaked..." His hand scrabbled for a handkerchief as his shaky breath hitched. He quickly covered two congested sneezes then blew his nose.

"My poor sky." Liam whispered as he adjusted the blanket which had slipped. "What can I do to help?"

"You are here my dearest." Gabriel’s face softened, "I'm not suffering from my back to school alignment alone." Reaching out he kissed Liam's hand then leaned on his shoulder. Sadly his peace was disrupted as a pressure rose in his chest. Turning away, Gabriel hacked into his handkerchief, the cough crackling out of his poor sick lungs. A minute later he regained his breath.

"You should stay home tomorrow. The rain today hasn't helped you, love." Liam ran his hands along Gabriel’s hairline, caressing some of the loose strands.

Gabriel huffed a wheezy laugh, "I should but you know I cannot. It's only the third day of class. However, I don't have a lot planned. And..." His watery blue eyes looked at Liam, "You'll be there, correct, my dear?"

"Of course. Hopefully you'll be feeling better by the weekend." Liam said as Gabriel once laid against his chest.

"I hope so." Gabriel whispered before closing his eyes.

"Dearest, you musn't fib. I know you're....dis..." Gabriel’s words were cut short as he sneezed again into his handkerchief. "Disappointed."

Liam shrugged, "It's only a concert, they'll tour again. I'm more worried about you."

Gabriel blushed as he fiddled with the cloth in his hands. "The doctor said I'll be fine in...a few days..." He said trying not to cough. "You'd planned this months ago."

Liam noticed the glistening at the edges of Gabriel’s red rimmed blue eyes. "Love, you're getting over something...awful." He swallowed hard, "You're health will always be more important than anything. Besides...lots of people at a concert remember. I'd need you with me." Liam smiled and caressed Gabriel’s warm face.

The professor managed a smile before his troubled lungs disrupted their moment again.

"Just rest for now. I'll make you tea." Liam said as he adjusted the pillow behind his boyfriend. "Does that help?"

Gabriel nodded as he let out a sigh. "Tea sounds lovely, thank you my dear."

Wear a coat, you'll catch a cold.

Gabriel should have listened, but honestly when he'd left to head to the bookstore the weather had been pleasant. Liam told him to wear a coat but he hadn't and now as the professor huddled under an awning, waiting for the crosswalk to light up, he wished he had listened.

Rain rolled down his face and neck, soaking the thin cardigan, his hair, splashing the cuffs of his pants. A full body shiver ran through him as he started across the street, the entrance to their building mere yards away.

Gabriel dripped onto the floor as he shuffled to the elevators, sucking in a breath, fighting against his teeth chattering. When the door dinged open, he wasn't shocked to see Liam standing in the loft doorway holding out a blanket.

"Oh bless you dearest." Gabriel sighed as Liam wrapped the warm blanket around his shoulders. "Your assignment of the situation was correct, I should have worn my coat. Forgive me."

"Fret not, love. I've made tea and set dry clothes out on the bed." Liam said as he followed Gabriel up the stairs.

A few minutes later, Gabriel dressed in fresh clothes, still with the blanket snuggly around him, sat huddled in bed next to his beloved.

"What did I ever do to deserve you?" Gabriel asked as his cold nose searched for warmth against Liam’s neck.

Liam only smiled and kissed Gabriel's cheek.

As expected two days later, Gabriel was under the weather, but at least he had his Liam to care for him.

This ask is so old but I am trying to jump start my writing muse and this prompt is adorable. G totally enjoys a good puzzle.

Liam couldn't help but smile (not giggle he definitely hadn't giggled) at Gabriel posed at the kitchen counter, one hand clenched around his handkerchief, the other carefully holding the puzzle piece between his fine fingers.

Honestly, Liam was happy just because after a good two weeks with a nasty head cold it appeared his boyfriend was finally over the worst, save for the constant sniffling.

Gabriel gazed over the almost half together puzzle he'd started before his cold took over, looking for the right spot to fit his piece into but usually it ended with him pausing to wipe, rub or blow his chapped red nose again.

Liam felt bad, the skin around Gabriel’s nose was rubbed nearly raw from how bad his cold had been. But Gabriel refused to give up his beloved handkerchiefs, continuing to rub until every part of his poor nose glowed red.

"Blast it." Gabriel finally said putting his piece down and turned to blow again. "I thought for sure that piece fit over hear, the colors nearly match." His brow furrowed as his cloth folded over his nose.

"Work on a different area, love." Liam said looking up from his phone. "Try doing the blue of the sky."

Gabriel sniffled hard, swallowed, then gave a tired nod. "Mayhap I can piece this cloud together." Eyes back on the puzzle, he meticulously picked out any with the slightest hints of white set on blue while continuing to sniffle.

Sicktember day 11: Emergency Room/Ambulance

"D-Dearest," Gabriel’s voice shook as he whispered. "Do you know where we are?"

Liam head throbbed as he felt Gabriel’s cool hand cup his face. His eyes heavy, stinging with pain, fluttered open enough to see the tear stained face of his beloved looking at him with worry not suited for those beautiful eyes.

"I'll wager...a guess..." He felt so heavy as if gravity only focused on him.

"I k-know you don't like hospital but I-I didn't know what to do." Gabriel hiccuped, tears began welling again. "I couldn't get...your fever down and...uh...oh heavens, Jasper wife...the red-head..."

"Celeste." Liam rasped as he tried to sit up.

"Yes, thank you dear, I'm awful with names...oh don't sit up." Gabriel rested a hand on Liam’s shoulder easing him back. "Please, lay back, the nurse said you're quite dehydrated, conserve your strength." Gabriel let out a wavering breath and rubbed his forehead briefly.

"How'd...we get here?" Liam tried focusing on Gabriel but the fluorescent lights of the ER burned his eyes, the humming aggravating his head.

"Jasper drove us." Gabriel fussed with the blanket and then brushed Liam’s matted hair from around his pale face, his flushed cheeks the only hint of color. "He asked me to...text him..." Gabriel looked away embarrassed, "When you're released, he went to fetch his friend from work."

Liam nodded then winced as everything hurt currently. "Did...whoever saw me say when that might be..." He was happy he was already too dazed for his anxiety to bother him.

Gabriel shook his head, "You need fluids," He motioned to the IV, "and your fever must get under control." He rubbed his forehead again.

A pang of worry hit Liam’s chest, "Love, I'm not...going anywhere, why don't you take a cab home and rest."

"I'm fine..." Gabriel said wishing his voice didn't betray him. "I'm not leaving." He took Liam’s hand on his, rubbing the top with his thumb.

Liam’s dry cracked lips managed a smile, "I knew you wouldn't." He closed his eyes falling back into a dreamless sleep.
