It was one of the rare occasions where Seto was not working in his own office. It did happen, from time to time, especially if the larger teams had finished a big project. There would be desks open down in the development floors, whole swaths empty for a time. Who was going to stop the president from claiming a desk? And given the lack of personnel in the department, it wasn’t that difficult to find some solitude. Take a project manager’s office and Seto Kaiba was sufficiently distanced to do his own work.
He was hardly isolated. Isono always knew where he was, simply as a matter of security, and his phone was still active. If anyone needed him in a moment, they could reach him. However, Seto was not expecting someone to actually open the project manager’s door and enter, much less for them to enter without a formal introduction. However, as the intruder slid forward, Seto pushed back his chair from the desk, relaxing into the cushion as they placed something on the mostly-empty desk.
“Kitten,” Mokuba declared, already turning to leave. Seto glanced at the creature that had been placed on the desk, a long-haired pile of black and white fur, and his expression tightened.
“Mokuba, you cannot–”
“Kitten.” Mokuba turned, pointing directly at Seto. The two brothers held eye contact, neither moving, until the cat on the desk mewed softly and stood up.
“This is not a kitten. This is a fully grown cat.”
“Kitten,” Mokuba repeated, refusing to budge. Seto waited, then exhaled slowly, closing his eyes before spreading his arms wide in acceptance.
“At least tell me where it came from.”
“Mitsuki in legal found her when she came in to work. I think our employees ought to be commended for their humanitarian outlook and sympathy toward animals, so I let her keep it here. For today. We’re not in the adoption business, but–”
“Why here, then?”
“Because. Kitten.”
“Cat.”
“Kitten.” Within a few moments, Mokuba was smiling warmly, eyes on the cat which had padded across the desk and poked experimentally at the computer’s keyboard. “I’ll be back in an hour.”
“Is she even litter trained? Mokuba, you can’t–”
But the door was already closing with a click, leaving the cat on the desk and Seto staring warily at the creature.
“Meow.”
“Meow to you too.” Seto could be curt, demanding, and unsociable even at the best of times, but there was no need to be rude to a guest. The cat looked at him, tail flicking quickly from side to side, and finally Seto made a shooing motion. “I need the keyboard.”
“Meow.” More plaintive now, edged with insistence.
“I really hope Mokuba fed you.” Seto reached out to lift the cat, surprised by how easily she accepted the movement, and placed her to the side of the keyboard. However, as he pulled himself forward and returned to the designs he’d opened on the computer, the cat padded forward too, stepping on Seto’s hand and climbing into the space created by his arms. Seto paused, the long hair of the cat’s tail tickling his nose, and tutted under his breath.
“No.” He lifted the cat again, setting her aside. Within a few moments, she’d walked forward into the same space, requiring Seto to move her once more. This cycle repeated five times in total, until finally Seto lifted the cat and rotated her to look into her eyes.
He was surprised to find she did not claw or struggle. She drooped from where he held her, and he estimated her weight at around ten pounds, at the least. Her fur was smooth from a recent brushing, and she did not stink as if she’d been living in an alley recently. Seto studied her eyes, a startling clear blue, and she met his gaze steadily.
“The keyboard is ‘no’,” he stated. The cat gave no indication of understanding, but Seto turned to set the cat on the ground instead. As he pulled forward to the keyboard, Seto could feel movement around his feet, but as it was an acceptable movement, he did not need to correct it. He could be a petsitter for an hour. How hard could it be?
+++
Mokuba opened the door carefully, not entirely sure of what he’d find inside. Seto had not called, even when Mokuba’s promise to return in an hour had turned into two hours. However, as Mokuba closed the office door, he heard Seto’s voice, and braced himself.
“Because I can’t have that much raw information running through all at once. I tried it with the disks, and with various parts of the network. We have to focus on optimizing.”
“Meow.”
“I know, but it’s the reality. Even if I try to make proprietary software, it’s no good in a few years. People are constantly trying to force open a backdoor, and I don’t blame them, but–”
“Meow.”
“Right. Yes.”
“Seto?” Mokuba interrupted, voice soft. “How’s it going?”
“Going? It’s fine. I’ve started three projects and made no progress in any of them. We’ve tangled up the planning stages in knots and I think I opened a new blueprint.”
“So a good day, then.”
Seto smiled. “Decent enough.”
“I noticed that you were explaining the knots to someone.”
“She’s useful. I need her feedback.” Seto paused, lifting his hands from the keyboard to lift the cat into his lap. “I assume you’re familiar with the method.”
“Familiar, yes. I think you’ve made a new friend.”
“Friend? Hardly. We could put her on staff, give her a consulting fee.”
“Well, you’ll have to take that up with Tsubasa. He’s adopting her.”
“Tsubasa?” Seto’s eyebrows drew together, and Mokuba nodded.
“Tsubasa. Marketing. He was thinking about getting a cat, and when Mitsuki showed him pictures, he agreed to take her.”
“Tsubasa in Marketing.”
“Yes, Seto. She’s been adopted.” Mokuba stepped forward, reaching out to pick up the cat, but Seto rolled the chair backwards to avoid Mokuba’s reach. Mokuba frowned. “Seto.”
“A moment.”
“If it wasn’t Tsubasa, we would have found someone. We’re a company of more than five thousand people in this building alone. Nigiri’s cousin considered it, Fletcher’s kid wanted a cat, and hey, everyone’s really sympathetic to a good cat photo. She’s got a good place somewhere.”
Seto nodded, lifting the cat out of his lap and handing her to Mokuba. “Put Tsubasa in for the pet insurance.”
“We don’t really do pet insurance.”
“Well, start a proposal so we do.”
Mokuba snorted, lifting the cat as she wriggled in his arms, then letting her climb up his suit to rest on his shoulder. “Wriggly little thing.”
“You have to talk to her. Tell Tsubasa–”
“Listen, Nii-sama, we can bring in other cats. We could even ask Tsubasa or other staff if they want to have a pet day. Some places do it.”
Now it was Seto’s turn to snort. “Some places?”
“American places.”
“Well.” Seto folded his arms over his chest, waiting a moment longer, then made a shooing motion with one hand. “Go on, get her down to Tsubasa. He needs to get started on all the purchases to make.”
“Sure thing.” Mokuba grinned, twisting to keep his hold on the cat even as she mewed again. Seto watched them go, noting with some annoyance that Mokuba left the office door ajar, then exhaled to himself.
At least he hadn’t named her.

We are brothers in the same way a slaughterhouse is a church
[ID: a digital sketch of mokuba and Noa, noa being in an older android body closer to a late teenager. The two of them sit together on a couch, and Mokuba clings to Noa with his eyes screwed shut. Noa looks conflicted, but is hugging back Mokuba. End ID]

Sometimes feels like people are way too...ready, to resolve the Ishtars dad issues with "he's an abusive piece of shit and they're done with him." Which, yes, he was an abusive piece of shit and they should stop giving him headspace, but there is no way that is going to happen immediately. Marik spends all of BC earnestly trying to avenge him and is obviously wrecked by his death, and his ability to come to terms with how wretched his dad was is deeply complicated by the fact that he literally killed the guy.
It is not going to happen quickly or immediately and they're all going to deal with it at different rates. There's going to be overlapping periods of time wherein Rishid is already mentally making black comedy jokes to cope about how getting skinned was the best thing that guy ever did for them while Marik is still plugging his ears and leaving generous funerary offerings at whatever hole Ishizu dug on her own at age 15 and doesn't want to talk about.

Thinking about Seto making Mokuba Battle City Commissioner makes me emotional because it’s perhaps the most significant gesture of trust and respect that Mokuba gets from his brother; like he goes from being an unwitting pawn in Seto’s takeover scheme to a position of power and importance, and that tracks as significant to both of them because the most meaningful and perhaps only positive feedback Seto got growing up was in the form of being rewarded with positions of greater power and responsibility like that’s the language they know!! Mokuba spends so much of the early narrative desperately seeking closeness with his brother and by Battle City he’s smirking gleefully as he effortlessly calls up Seto to deal with a cheater who won’t listen to him I loooove that for them

OTGW Kaibros AU because it’s the OTGW season and bc I felt like reposting it from my twitter from awhile back! Enjoy!
~~~~~
Seto and Mokuba are both too busy to participate in Halloween this year. While rushing back home from a meeting their car crashes on the highway, putting them both in coma. They wake up in the forest, but Seto isn't 18 but 10, and Mokuba is 5. Their memory of what happened and their lives leading up to this point are cloudy and confusing. Ten year old Seto is trying not to panic under the weight of responsibility - he has to find a way out of the forest while looking out for Mokuba and avoiding all the supernatural stuff. Mokuba on the other hand is happy and optimistic, and always tries to cheer Seto up. He is oblivious to the dangers surrounding them, as if he sees this world differently than Seto, and that worries the older brother. Once or twice already Seto needed to quickly intervene to prevent his five year old brother from walking straight into a deadly trap.
The Beast lurks behind the trees, but Mokuba only looks at Seto and smiles. "It's going to be allright, Seto!" He throws his Blue Eyes plushie above his head and catches it again, and Seto feels the irresistible urge to press the oblivious boy against him and hiss at the looming shadow behind them.
The Beast is every adult, who ever disappointed and betrayed Seto. The Beast is the hopelessness and despair of a child thrown away and burdened by responsibility for another child. The only one who holds the darkness at bay is Mokuba – his brother is the reason Seto never fully succumbed to despair and misery, even in the darkest hours. Mokuba is in fact the one who protects Seto from the Beast. Seto holds Mokuba's hand - supposedly as not to lose the boy in the forest, but in reality, Seto needs that for himself, because it does not seem like they'll ever find a way out of this forest and despair casually knocks on the door to his mind, but Mokuba holds his hand and pushes forward, dragging Seto behind him, and Seto smiles against his ever growing hopelessness - Mokuba is here, he is fine, and that means they both will be allright and if they walk on and on they'll eventually walk out of that forest, right, Seto? The forest can't be forever!" and Seto can't argue with that logic. A ray of sunshine breaks through the clouds and illuminates the path in front of them. The Beast watches, and for once, he is the hopeless one. He won't be having either of them.
The Unknown lets them go, and Seto wakes up in the hospital. Mokuba is in another room, and he rushes there, disregarding his own injuries, dragging his leg cast. His brother is still in coma, and Seto is terrified. He slumps next to Mokuba on his bed and buries his fingers into the black hair, trying to untangle the messy strands, avoiding the bandaged forehead. Mokuba chooses this moment to open his eyes and smile weakly at the sight of his big brother, while Seto lets out a relieved sigh.
They will be allright. Together they have the power to defeat any beast.
FIN
~~~
And now for a bad ending to this:
The forest goes on and on, Mokuba's sheer endless optimism and trust in Seto are putting him under immense pressure, and Seto slowly loses the hope that they’ll make it out. He has no other outlet for his fear but Mokuba, so he starts to let it out on his brother.
Mokuba – being a five year old – doesn’t really understand it, and so he just takes it without complaining, because he always trusted his brother, and his brother always took care of him and loved him, Mokuba has no reason to believe this will change, so he just accepts it, and continues cheering Seto up. Eventually, the influence of the Beast – the hopelessness and despair - drive Seto to snap and reject Mokuba the same way he once did during Death-T (except right now, none of them remember that happened) – “Stop clinging to me! I’m not your savior in need!” Seto pushes Mokuba away and Mokuba lands in a pile of leaves on the ground. “Go find a way out on your own.”
Before the five year old Mokuba can even rise to his feet, Seto runs away as quickly as he can, so that his brother can’t follow him. He’s had enough! He can barely provide for himself, why does Mokuba think he will provide for him as a matter of fact? Why does Mokuba think he knows the way out of this forest? He runs until he is out of breath, and collapses under a tree. Suddenly, his memories come rushing back at him – everything up to the day of the car crash, and especially the Death-T. What he did back when, how he rejected Mokuba and once Mokuba tried to win him back the only way he knew how – play a game – he pushed the button to torture his brother. And how much he tried to make it up to Mokuba afterwards, and how quickly Mokuba has forgiven him. And now, given half a chance, he immediately reverted to the same monster he was during Death-T. Seto felt sick.
~~~
Mokuba tried to run in the same direction Seto disappeared, but there was nothing there, just trees upon trees. He didn’t understand why Seto snapped, didn’t understand what he did wrong. He probably just wasn’t good enough of a brother for Seto to love him, and that’s why Seto left. Now that he was alone, the forest became much more terrifying – the sun went down, the shadows moved, taking shapes of monsters with long claws and sharp teeth.
Nobody except Seto cared for him, and nobody would even look for him out here, and nobody would care if the monsters killed him. As the dusk progressed, Mokuba hid behind a bush and couldn’t hold back tears. Leaves rustled nearby. Terrified, Mokuba looked up and saw the Beast in front of him.
“There is no way out of this forest, little one. Give up and join me.” The Beast spoke gently, reaching a hand out to him, and Mokuba realized that this was true. He won’t find a way out on his own, and nobody was coming for him. There was something freeing in admitting that.
And besides, whoever that was in front of him at least offered to keep him company, right? Mokuba got up and walked over to the Beast.
“Your brother will join us soon.”
yugioh was a first for me in a lot of ways. the duel monsters anime was the first anime i really got into, featured the first fictional characters i ever developed crushes on, the first time i decided “i can’t watch that, it’s a boy’s show” is total bullshit when i watched an episode for the heck of it and decided “wait this is actually good??”
looking back, i think i got into this series not long after my father’s death which was when my depression started to really kick it into high gear. maybe that’s just a coincidence, i don’t know, but it’s no exaggeration to say this series helped me through some dark times in my life. still does, honestly.
not saying the series is perfect of course; it’s a product of its time in some ways and the writing is kinda iffy at times (not even counting the dub), but it still means a lot to me. the characters feel like old friends. it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
thank you, kazuki takahashi, for making yugioh exist. pretty sure you saved some lives with it.
