if i learned anything from endwalker it's that if you want a nation (a profoundly questionable notion, but let's assume) that is largely happy and healthy it helps if an elder dragon is the head of state

after the end of main sequence 6.0 the children of radz-at-han collectively decide he must have been super lonely living all those centuries behind the satraps
so they keep an eye on his schedule and when he's not busy they'll go play games with him (a couple of the kids turn out to be pretty vicious backgammon players) or make flower chains
the littlest just climb up on him and tell him about the busy lives their dolls lead
vrtra thinks it's about dolls, the littles aren't great at narrative cohesion, but he could be wrong

"Thancred Jeremiah Waters! We need to talk. Now."
"Oh, shit." Flight, when faced with two and a half yalms of irritated Hellsguard Warrior, was a rational response, even if little conscious thought was involved. All the more when that Warrior was Spiral Glass, Soldier of Light, Savior of Eorzea, Godslayer.
He nearly made it out the window of his rooms in the Pendants when the Holmgang fell over him, rooting his feet to the floor. "Crap."
"Sit. Down," recommended Spiral, in the voice given to those who have raised several children to adulthood without actually killing any.
Thancred's ass hit the floor.
"You are fucking up badly, mister Waters, and it will stop this instant. I have made allowances for the loss we share and my long absence, from your perspective, but your behavior has been totally unacceptable. It will not continue."
"How can you possibly underst-"
Spiral's Inner Beast rose, snarling deep in their chest. "I have been you, feeling that pain. I have been Minfilia, feeling that pain. Tell me again how I don't understand.
"That child - who spent her life in a cell, who doesn't have so much as a name to call her own - would do anything for you."
"I know."
"She would rather not exist at all than live with the pain and disappointment she sees when you look at her."
"I... didn't know it was that bad."
"Well. Now you do. And since she is a child and you are a grown-ass man, you will behave accordingly. If we have to have this conversation again it will not end well for you. Am I making myself clear?"
"Yes'm."
Spiral watched him for a moment and let the Holmgang dissolve. "I expected better. You will do better."
The door did not slam behind Spiral as they left.

the whole "life is finite and filled with suffering so death is better" argument isn't just stupid bullshit, it's stupid bullshit that gets people killed
like, i have not had a pain free conscious moment without large doses of morphine administered through a central catheter in literal decades
while i have no particular desire to extend my life i would kill in defense of it, should someone decide my pain was a net negative for humanity, or the world, or the cosmos
(i have little patience with moral philosophies based on some notion of society wide utility for exactly this reason)
my suffering is mine and i guard it jealously
would i like to have better access to drugs that make me suffer less? absolutely! do i feel like suffering the repeating traumas of bigotry has any value? fuck no
all that shit should change
some day my life will end
in time, any evidence that i lived will vanish
there will have been neither meaning nor purpose beyond what i and those who know me gave it
there will never have been anything to me than a very temporary conglomeration of chemical processes
and that's fine, it's more than enough
i have escaped death by very narrow margins more than once
i was like eight the first time anyone told me they hadn't expected me to live the night
on three separate occasions doctors have taken my wife out of my hospital room to tell her i might die
every single time has been painful, exhausting, disgusting, and i was very much aware that i could die in the very near future
anyway, the plot of final fantasy fourteen endwalker lands kind of awkward for me

it is just so satisfying to hit a (one-time) level cap in a dungeon, hit that recommended gear button and go from mismatched gear to a full set of top tier gear (by filthy casual non raiding standards) and crush everything in your path
like blam! instant dopamine

like, relative morality doesn't have a place in the ascii v everything else in existence fight, since that's a zero sum game with a binary solution set: win or die
(and some might choose death but most living entities have a preference for existence over nonexistence, also not a question where morality applies)
but since the ascii try to make it a moral question? let's entertain that a moment
their goal is to restore the world as it was, prior to the calamity that culminated in the final days and the creation of zodiark
which, fine, that's a pretty normal initial human response to trauma, after i shot myself, every day for months i woke up confused by that reality and had to accept it as if it were new and that process sucked dead donkey ass
the means by which the ascii hope to achieve that goal (for there is no certainty that it would actually work) is...
to destroy the worlds that exist, killing all that live in them
which somehow is not murder since the ascii believe only themselves to be human and everything else to be mere symptoms of the wrongness of the worlds that are
only the destruction of ascii counts as murder
obviously this is a philosophically untenable notion but is commonly held by reactionaries like real world white supremacists
but set that aside because this isn't a question of who holds some spurious moral high ground
the outrage felt by the ascii that the people of the world that is oppose both the goal of the ascii and the means by which they would achieve that goal leaves me totally unmoved
we had no part in creating this world
the asciis' claim that their goal serves the greatest good failed to convince even their unsundered contemporaries
why should i bother to entertain it?
if the ascii offer salvation, i will be damned

as much as i am fond of giant stompy robots and i do love me some giant robots
my initial response to xenogears showing up in final fantasy xiv was less "woah cool"
and more "dude have we not learned what a monumentally bad idea this kinda shit is?"
