Someday I'm gonna wake up, check my social media and I will not see comments about Sophie being deminish, insulted or erased, Someday I'm gonna wake up and there will only be good and positive comments about her and how brave she was by not letting Araminta brake her spirit in anyway and always manage the way to stood up against everything she went through because I'll never accept her being called weak for her quiet strenght and surviving mechanism, that day will be a good day for me
First of all Anon who do I have to kick? Because some people go around disrespecting our Sophie and that's not nice. Come on give me names, I'll get my vodoo dolls.
Second, I rarely see Sophie hate in my dash because I use the block button liberally and I'm not on Twitter. Because angst is not my thing. (Unless we're talking fanfiction aus with a happy ending) this is an angst free blog. Safe for all of you who want angst free content.
That aside, this IS a blog where one is free to rant about fictional injustice so thank you for coming.
I know a lot of people don't like to hear this but Sophie Beckett is a perfectly fine character! She is not passive, or weak or a coward. I've said this in previous posts, only a person who's been trough the kind of abuse Sophie suffered under Araminta knows exactly WHY she's such a strong character in the first place. And why her quiet defiance is admirable.
If you don't know what it's like to be stuck since childhood with nowhere to go, in an abusive household, where the main abuser is a woman, traditionally seen as a caregiver who instead of offering warmth or love, holds food and shelter over Sophie's head to make her behave, while Sophie had nowhere to turn to and no friends to support her. Then you don't know why she's such a strong character.
Sophie's backstory is super tragic and this is a fact. Araminta was a gaslighter of the highest caliber. And Sophie's status as a bastard meant that she virtually had no rights and wasn't entiled to demand anything from anyone. So her surviving within her circumstances, without becoming an abuser or a cold unemotional asshole, was an act of superhuman mental strength and courage .
Sophie haters are like those people you meet when you're clinically depressed who ask 'But why don't you think more positive?' and 'why don't you smile more'
And you want to tell them 'I don't know Brad, maybe because it's hard? Ever thought about that??? Must be nice living in your head, without self criticism voices telling you that you suck, wonder how that fantasy land feels like'
For those of you who don't know what being a bastard was like in regency england (the following also applies to Gareth Sin Clair, if you're wondering). It was like having a stamp in her national ID, right next to date of birth and natal country, an ugly stamp that said 'born out of wedlock: Do not treat with respect' by all intents and purposes commoners had it better. But Araminta gaslighted Sophie so bad since childhood!!
And I really don't know what's up with people these days and victim blaming. But here's a tip ANYTHING THAT ISN'T KINDNESS AND SUPPORT TOWARDS A VICTIM OF ANY KIND OF ABUSE, IS UN-WEL-COME.
So those people that say Sophie could have gotten out of there, that she could have done this and that or left Araminta, or punched her sooner etc. Check your victim blaming at the door please. It was not Sophie's responsibility to get out of that abusive situation when she was virtually powerless. It WAS ARAMINTA'S RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE CARE OF HER. Why aren't more people talking about what an absolute asshole Araminta was to do that to little Sophie, for her whole life?? Let's put the blame where it belongs, in Araminta's door and in the Earl of Gunningworth's ass.
Guys Araminta was the bad guy, I know it's obvious enough in An offer from a Gentleman, but let me spell it out, Araminta was an abuser, a gaslighter, a psychopath, the kind that lives under the beds of abusive homes and makes the victims of her criminal behavior call her 'mommy' a ne'rdo well asshole who treated a little girl with the utmost unfairness, who bullied and humiliated Sophie for half her life, just for funsies! She was evil and got away with it.
So when we meet Sophie in an offer from a Gentleman, we meet her after years of THIS 👆 And what we meet isn't a jaded, depressed girl. We meet Sophie, Sophie who is a kind, stubborn, warm-hearted person with only her integrity to comfort her against the world that has hurt her. By the time Sophie meets Benedict, Araminta has already taken everything else she has.
The psychopath she's lived with her whole life probably used the words 'your mother was nothing more than a _____' to further verbally abuse Sophie all the time.
When she meets Benedict, Sophie is clear that the ONLY thing she has that can't be taken from her is her agency. She's constantly using her agency around Benedict. Because it's something Araminta denied her for so long!. So of course she refused to be his mistress. She CAN, that's the whole point, she's been robbed of choices her whole life.
And now that Sophie sort of escapes, now that she can make her own choices she's saying NO! Call it morals, integrity or simply Sophie expecting Benedict to respect her use of agency. Saying No to Benedict might not look empowering for us but it IS empowering for her! And that makes Sophie Beckett awesome.
And I know I know, Benedict is a product of his environment and ya di dah. but the Book is titled 'An offer from a Gentleman' for a reason! It's a sarcastic dig at the fact that Benedict doesn't behave as a gentleman for almost all the book. Because a true gentleman would never ask any woman to be their mistress under any circumstance. Virgin, married or widowed.
Benedict SHOULDN'T HAVE ASKED. Had he truly been thinking like a gentleman he would have done that gentlemanly thing and rescued Sophie chivalrously, worked towards bettering her life circumstances and eventually asked her to marry him like a character out of an Arturian legend. But Benedict is no sir Galahad. The whole irony of the book title is right there. That people in the ton call him a gentleman but in reality he's a total poser. He's faking it, he's pretending, he's of as ungentlemanly as his brothers! Sophie's just calling him out on it!
And Sophie who is a woman and a bastard, who is penniless and is by every means supposed to be inferior than him. STILL HAS MORE INTEGRITY. Her morals are better than his, she keeps her word, she feels more guilty, has more patience and definitely takes more responsibility! Sophie in every sense of the word might not have been born a Lady but she IS better than Benedict. Who's the brother of a Viscount.
Go Sophie! You Rock!
I'm just glad Benedict recognizes what an absolute goddess he married and spends the rest of his life worshipping the ground she walks in because it's what Sophie deserves.
I hope she's already been casted, I hope it's an incredible actress that brings us the mix of absolute innocence and fierceness that is Sophie Beckett. Because it's what I want to see.
And you know me #JusticeForSophie4k I'll always be here to support our one only non problematic fave. Sophie has done nothing wrong ever, she's a fun chaotic sister in law and we love her just like Benedict. End of story

My heart is breaking for Sophie. I am a mother and as of a month ago a grandmother. I can't fathom how a mother or grandmother could know these things are happening and not do anything about it. The mama-bear in me would be ripping that monster apart. The mother should have all her parental rights stripped from her and do time! The grandmother should also be held responsible! How dare she not believe her granddaughter. It's our responsibility to protect our children and both of these women failed Sophie in the worse way.
I truly hope the legal system works for Sophie and justice is served. I hope she is put in the safe arms of her father and family who love and support her. I also hope Sophie receives mental help she is going to need to heal from the abuse and injustice pushed upon her.
Ps. Goes without saying...the p.o.s. who molested her should burn in hell!!

Fascinating watching these two series on Sophie, the Sky series almost reminded me of the Staircase Murders … just incredible how anyone believed he was innocent for so long! This kind of mental illness mixed with alcohol is toxic & deadly! Highly recommend watching either these series … or both! 🎞📽🖤 #sophietoscanduplantier #justiceforsophie #murderatthecottage #skyoriginal #sophieamurderinwestcork #netflix #murderseries https://www.instagram.com/p/CRBPuzxLFe_/?utm_medium=tumblr

If anyone is following Sophie’s case, the judge ruled today that the father gets more custody and that no unrelated males including the step father can be around Sophie or any of her siblings! Huge win! And that the father gets a hour long zoom chat a day with the kids on the days he doesn’t have them to make sure they are ok. Another huge win! And the medical history came out and it suggested there was sexual abuse happening! Once they go to trial he will most likely gain full custody!! Our voices worked! There is justice! Keep up the good work everyone! We must always stand up for our kids! In the mean time they are working on getting the trial bumped up sooner than later! #IStandWithSophie #JusticeForSophie #StandWithSophie https://www.instagram.com/p/CEz4QePHtCA/?igshid=10oqvjyt173jt

We should get Sophie’s name on trending because least people are talking about it ! This breaks my heart if we can trend the dumbest thing on Twitter why not this ? This will bring more attention of the people and Sophie will be free ! We have to do this ! This is NOT FAIR . She is being forced to live with her mom who watches her getting abused and that abuser . Makes me SICK ! How in the world is this fair for a 9 year old . There is a god damn video of her admitting that she’s being abused by her mother’s boyfriend . Guys let’s be honest what if the same thing that happened to Sophie would’ve happened to a star kid ( god forbid no child deserves this ) trust me the abuser would’ve been in JAIL. Would the famous kid be forced to live with that abuser? Would the abuser be free ? This system is getting worse day by day . Sophie and absolutely NO ONE DESERVES this . Please share this post and hashtag and all the hashtags and posts related to Sophie . She needs to be freed and her voice needs to be heard . @taylorswift @taylornation #istandwithsophie #standwithsophie #standforsophie #hangtheabusers #standagainstinjustice #standagainstsexualassault #sophie #justiceforsophie https://www.instagram.com/p/CErNmNxJEvl/?igshid=mmmdfzpscg9m

Okay so I’m back with another character analysis discussion ramble - Sophie + PTSD. I’ve seen a lot of us Bridgerton fans talk about Anthony’s… mental state & Kate’s insecurities. I also know that you like to explore Benedict’s confidence issues & have touched on Sophie’s PTSD before 🤔 Though, most of what I’ve seen (on Tumblr + generally on AO3) has been AUs/fix-it scenarios where Araminta gets the treatment she deserves & goes to jail.
No criticism to JQ, but I would’ve loved to see more of Sophie’s POV & working through her trauma. How does she deal with those inner voices, triggers & insecurities? 😯 As much as I hate to think about it, did Sophie have a nervous breakdown & how did Benedict manage to not throw hands the first time they met Araminta or Rosamund at a ball or social gathering? How does flashbacks & nightmares affect her, are they more common/worse when they have to visit London? Does she share her night terrors with Benedict or does that “don’t worry about me” kick in often? 😔
Basically, I would have loved a second book just from Sophie’s POV 😅 especially since healing isn’t linear & she suffered for years (#JusticeForSophie) so to finish of this word vomit of a ramble, what’s your thoughts on Sophie’s PTSD? If you try to look into her mind, how does she heal when Araminta & Rosamund are out in society?
*cracks fingers*
Right… we all know how much I love delving into the angst and the pain of Sophie’s past so… I am going to go below the cut as this is gonna get long… and I’m sorry. (not really because you did ask…)
To me, Sophie doesn’t fully heal until she has the chance to present her daughter to the Queen (yes I know as she wasn’t presented technically she can’t, but I have the HC that Benni does a commission for Queen Victoria and she offered him a title, but he declined it, and asked instead that his wife be afforded the chance to present their daughter at court… but that is a whole other story!)
It’s only then when she feels like she is part of the ton.
Depending on the reason for the trip to London depends on how bad Sophie is before they go. If it is just to see family, for a family celebration she is excited and she is happy to go but for anything else she is nervous.
She was worse than Benedict leading up this exhibition but because she didn’t want to stress him anymore she plastered on her brave face and did the whole “don’t worry about me” routine, until a week before when Benedict finds her in the garden having a panic attack.
For the first two years of marriage, Sophie managed to avoid Araminta and Rosamund. Araminta finally married Rosamund off to some Scottish Earl and they left for Scotland, only to realise he was breaking, and they are back in London, without Rosamund’s husband (who FYI has 6 bastards… and Rosamund is literally unable to give him a legitimate child) so their social standing drops but Rosamund uses her husband’s name to get tickets to a big event that is happening in London.
Unbeknown to both parties… it was Benedict’s art exhibit as it was being shown without his name all over it, at his behest. It was only an hour or so in, that it became apparent.
Sophie was an excellent hostess but the moment she saw Rosamund and Araminta she froze. Daphne and Kate offer to throw them out but not wanting to cause a scene, Sophie wanting to bask in her husband’s glory, ignores them, until Rosamund makes her way to her.
It isn’t outwardly nasty, Rosamund would never publicly embarrass herself but when Benedict sees Sophie practically cornered, he makes a big speech about how much he loves his wife and how this wasn’t possible without her and Rosamund sulks off. (this happens to be the night of little Alex being conceived!)
Next time she sees them both, she is pregnant and she’s a little less calm about it all and may or may not have made some snide comments to Rosamund which LW praises in that week’s column, mainly because Rosamund stalked off with Araminta.
Benedict knows how much Sophie wanted to have her own season, so he does try to take her to London for a spell, they either go right at the start of the season or right at the end. They avoid some of the more particular London Mama’s but after Benedict’s first piece of art goes into the national gallery more and more people call on Sophie when she is in London, wanting to see the woman that inspired the artist and try and beg her to get her husband to do a portrait or a piece for them.
It gives Sophie great pleasure in turning them away.
But her night terrors, my sweet baby girl… Oh they plague her, they’re worse when she is pregnant, but she suffers. Sometimes there out of nowhere and she can go weeks, even months without having one and they creep up at the worst times. The week of her anniversary is always bad because of the memories of Jail.
She never used to share them with him but when he woke up one night after Charlie was born and found her sat on the floor of Charlie’s nursey sobbing and clutching their 2-month-old son like a lifeline she caved and told him.
There are so many little angsty fics I could write about this… and Sophie coping and Benedict holding her, and the boys as they get older cuddling up with their Mama when she’s having a bad day. Charlie is a protective older brother and older son but Alex… Alex ends up in the same year at Eton as one of Phillip Cavender’s son’s…
Needless to say, when the school write’s to Benedict to tell him of his son’s antics and Benedict finds out who his son was fighting and why… Phillip Cavender Jnr is no longer admitted to the school, given that the Viscount, the Duke of Hastings, Sir Phillip Crane and TWO Mr Bridgerton’s turn up at the school and basically say, they will be removing their children and no further Bridgerton’s will be allowed to attend if Cavender remains…
It is not Benedict who drives Phillip Cavender out of London the first time around either… it’s not even Anthony… it’s the Duchess and the Viscountess…
Sophie’s healing comes with time, the love of her family and as the whispers die down. It’s obvious from the off that Benedict adores and loves his wife… but by the time Sophie is pregnant with Violet, Sophie is confident in herself, with her family and is relaxed in society. Yes she still has wobbles and nightmares but her son’s or her husband hug her and tell her they love her.
Kate and Daphne have thrown enough shade at some of the women in Society that no one dares speak bad of Mrs Bridgerton and everyone starts to realise that there is more to her than meets the eye.
Sophie deals with her terrors and her wobbles as best as she can. She tries to keep herself busy, when she is at My Cottage, everyone knows to let her in the kitchen when she needs to take her mind of things. Sophie bakes when she is anxious and it doesn’t take Benedict long to work that out, but as she uses to the baking and gifts it to their tenants and goes off on visits and meets with their neighbours and the people who love and adore her… he just sighs and lets her.
He holds her close when they go to bed and whispers that he loves her, he tries not to coddle her, to try and fix it. Mainly because he fears for his life after one outrage when he tried to tell her that she was being silly.
(She’d locked herself in her study for three hours)
Benedict starts to learn of the signs when she is getting nervous or when she’s had a bad night or a bad dream. He is a ridiculously sound sleeper, so he misses most of it but when he does wake, he holds her and lets her cry. He tries to distract her when it’s coming on and usually to help her prepare they plan their trips to London in advance. They rarely go without warning. The family try to give warning so that it doesn’t stress Sophie out.
Violet knows when Lady P is in London and when she is not… and Anthony did manage to have a word with the landlord and had Lady P evicted.
Posy is the best comfort for Sophie, she understands what Sophie went through and its only after Posy made peace with her mother that Sophie seemed to be able to make some peace and found herself able to pass Araminta in London without cowering and kept her head held high.
Rosamund rarely comes into London after the death of her husband, the property in Scotland was entailed away to cousin’s, she ended up being caught trying to seduce a happily married man, at his wife’s birthday party…
Araminta’s standing is less and less, turns out… definitely should have been nicer to her other daughter and stepdaughter.
Sophie still has her wobbles (the night before Violet’s presentation she is horrendous and she’s not allowed in the Bridgerton House kitchen…) but it’s after the birth of Violet, and her nearly dying, and nearly losing her baby girl that she realises, her life is perfect, it was worth the fight and she is finally able to put her past behind her… mostly.
I’ve got SO many angsty fics I could write for all of this it’s unreal

This is Sophie. She’s being sexually abused by her mothers boyfriend, and the authorities are doing nothing. Her mother and grandmother also know, and ignore and discredit her. She says that her mother watches it happen and just stands by. We need to help this poor girl.

Your take on people considering Sophie a pushover?
Are we talking about the same character?
Sophie Beckett? I-won't'be-your-mistress-Sophie, the same girl who would rather starve in the streets so much Benedict had to result to threatening her because she did NOT want to be his mistress.
I mean you want examples of a pushover, you got Posy, Edwina, even Lucy on some occasions when it comes to Hermione, and of course show Daphne. That's sort of what a pushover looks like.
In the dictionary pushover is defined as "a person who is easy to overcome or influence"
That's not Sophie Beckett. Araminta had her in virtual slavery for years and never broke her spirit. Benedict's assholery didn't break her either. And trust me, he tried. Sophie reads more like silent stoic defiance you know, Jane Eyre style. The way she'd rather leave Ben than betray her principles. Because FYI Benedict totally seduced her, as in, he was persistent, persuasive and practically didn't let Sophie have any peace until she gave in. That's what made Sophie so mad. Sorry if she's human and fell inlove with him anyway, the heart wants what it wants.
But until Araminta pressed the issue to have her hanged, Sophie was prepared to go to Australia for life with her pride intact. There is a difference between Sophie being a pushover and her simply being a victim of her circumstances. Just give me an example, because I don't see it.

I thought the same about Eloise + Sophie and not trying to turn this into sad hours but I always thought that when Sophie was working at number 5 one time the Sharmas/Sheffields made a visit and Sophie saw how Mary, Kate's stepmother was treating Kate with much love and fondness and Happiness and Sophie after so many years of emotional abuse she might have thoughts of "so it is possible to love someone who is not from your bloodline" and "so I am the problem" 😭😭
I mean it's hard not to have mom envy when you meet Mary Sharma. And all this is valid and realistic and could totally happen in the show.
Also can you imagine Mary comforting Sophie in a scene like that? And just going full 'Araminta was the problem not you, children deserve to be loved' and just giving Sophie the closure she needed, because that would be so beautiful.
