Honestly he probably wouldn't have if what he'd overheard hadn't sounded… very illegal. Not that the laws were really something Maki paid any personal mind to really, but it was a bit unusual to hear what sounded like blatant talking about theft... heard from someone who couldn't be older than him by much.
He was fully intending on going about his business before this point, blending into the background as much as someone can despite a bright yellow jacket. But his curiosity got the better of him as he lingered near the stranger, unable to hide making a baffled face when he realized what he was hearing about. Sort of. Parts of it are not clicking. But what a jumpy reaction too.
It's rude to eavesdrop, his mind echoes back to him.
"I'm...sorry, I think I heard more than you intended on sharing. Though it's not any concern of mine if it helps."
If he was going to commit a theft that was up to the police to handle. Not any of Maki's business. Might be a little fun to watch, though.

It wasn't very often that Maki turned on Amagiri, he never had much reason to. He was often just repeating Amber's orders, or instructing Maki in some way, something of a caretaker for the whole group.
But Amber was noticeably absent from this meeting, and Maki naturally was the first to ask about her. To which Amagiri sighed, the sort of sigh that Maki had gathered meant that he expected this, and was disappointed.
"She doesn't need your help right now, we have more capable Contractors on the field at the moment for her."
More capable? Than me?
He gave the instruction for the rest to disperse, and they filed out without any further comment. But Maki stayed in place while these words were being torn apart in his mind.
Capable, huh.
He reaches for a stone hidden in his jacket pocket, aiming to pelt it at the adult's head as his contract stirred to life--
But he was stopped by an unknown presence behind him, someone grabbing him by the neck of his hoodie and lifting him up off the ground slightly. He hadn't known there was anyone behind him at all, blinded by the situation before him. Amagiri hadn't even looked back at them at all, he left the building but Maki was sure he could catch up if he was just freed.
His turn towards the person holding him captive is slow one, a near feral rage on his face with radiation still shining violently. This was not one bit swayed by the fact it was Svern, if anything he was even angrier by the nerve of him.
"Let. Me. Go."

He'd been briefly warned by Amber before, that human children likely around his age would likely try to get on his nerves. He was instructed specifically to not bother with them so as to not attract attention to himself, but he was griping about them teasing him. Calling him a ‘baby’ for walking away from the situation that he wanted nothing to do with. Apparently Svern felt like filling him in for a reason as to why they would call him something like that.
But he's not exactly receptive to this, his usually neutral face dropping to a mildly unimpressed one.
"And how old are you anyway?" He asks, "you don't look that much older than me."

If this question had been asked awhile before, he would've had an answer without any hesitation. Even now he opens his mouth to speak and he wants to say her name, as though no one else could ever compare. But then again, he was trying to move on from the life that she'd brought him into. He was steadily learning that the sort of life she'd brought him into was… not at all what it should have been.
"…I think I'd rather be bothering Ice right now. Does that count?" He finally answers. Obviously conflicted and reluctant, but it wasn't a lie regardless.

This is a funny question, he thinks the interviewer must think he used to live in one of the buildings now burned to a crisp. He can't blame them, he's looking like a lost child wandering through Yokohama… however, he's also not in the mood for this in the least.
"I'm fine." He answers curtly. "I don't live here, I just wanted to see what was going on." See the damage he did.

Blaire had gotten sick in the middle of the contest, and in Maki's mind the show couldn't have gone on without her for certain. It did suck to have to cancel what he'd worked so hard on though, and he sits alone at the beach while humming the tune to his song of choice.

When Contractors appeared, the sky became no longer as people knew it. Just a false one with a star representing every Contractor across the world. They shine when their associated Contractor is active, and fall like a shooting star when they die. This is why every Contractor has a Messier Code, pointing out their star in particular.
These codes are something that Contractors more or less inherently know once they’ve gained a general grasp on themselves. It’s something that can be shared amongst fellow Contractors, but most would choose not to due to the skewed views on Contractor emotions. After all, these Messier Codes when given to the right people, can be used as leverage for these people to be found and possibly killed.
