my thing with the rat grinders is like yeah sure jace and porter have been manipulating them to some extent and yeah sure they deserve to be saved or whatever but also! they should get their asses beat a little bit first. like come on. they got into this whole mess in the first place because they were so bitter and entitled that they jumped on the opportunity to get special treatment and have some of their teachers handfeed them exp with no effort. they then pressured their cleric to change gods and ignored all sorts of red flags all so they could be better than some kids they've never fucking talked to who are literally just out here trying to save the world. like okay yeah uncorrupt them or whatever, but also the bad kids deserve to fuck em up a little bit. play stupid games win stupid prizes baby

buddy dawn was always going to be used by the rat grinders.

he was specifically requested - there was some sort of plan in place when they asked for an out-of-town cleric of kristen’s former god to enroll in their school and join their recently shattered party.

and, no, this probably wasn’t the original plan.

perhaps, in stealing his diamonds, kipperlily was securing his inability to fulfill the oath of bringing the bad kids back, forcing him to lose his magic.

slitting his throat, of course, was a reaction to being clocked by kristen, a hasty move, a hope of trapping them in. but she likely never intended for him to survive the year, if the choice was that easy.

and your heart has to break, slightly, for this child. who was raised in a cult, who likely couldn’t tell he was being used by everyone around him. who was maybe, just maybe, starting to get the tools that could one day help him see those things. but it was cut short by someone he probably believed to be a friend.

maybe buddy dawn was always going to remain what he was, an evangelist who believes so strongly in the power of their god that anyone who thinks differently is strange and wrong, that they will have final say on the morality of the world at large. but maybe he wasn’t. and no, i didn’t think he was going to make it out of this season alive. but i didn’t think it would turn out like that.

Heartbreaking to see Kristen witness her younger brother being bullied by their parents and just having to acknowledge that she was her brothers’ shield and and she LEFT them

main takeaway from certain fan reactions to the finale is this:

the final scene with ankarna was so meaningful to the bad kids' arcs and how they made peace with being wronged by people they loved, and if all you can focus on is that the rat grinders didn't get much screentime, then you don't love dimension20 and you don't love this world: you want to be playing your own hs themed dnd campaign and you're mad the oc versions of the rat grinders you made up in your head acted ooc. these are not your characters and this is not their story.

okay but brennan describing the Rat Grinders as "level 20 features, but without the builds to back them up" when, all season long, the Bad Kids have proven time and time again that what wins their fights are not the sick ass abilites that come with higher levels, but the basic, most fundamental of cantrips and first level spells. the work that Bless has done for them is so incomprehensible to the Rat Grinders. this is why they're being fucking slaughtered. they just dont understand

I feel like this last episode really has been such a big reminder that Jawbone is not in any way trained to be a guidance counselor. Is he amazing at his job yes he’s great he’s helped so many kids but he is not legally qualified, plus there’s the added factor of him only having the job because of a party of students who are currently at the school and his adoptive daughter stepdaughter and the kid whose been living with him for months all go there so he can’t be truly impartial in matters concerning them like he’s supposed to. Do I think he shouldn’t have the job no because he’s amazing at it otherwise but I do think that there should be a second counselor with no connections to any of the students

So Kipperlilly's hatred towards Riz is the fantasy equivalent of "they have it easier because of diversity" white people type speech. He has an unfair avantage because his dad is dead so it makes him better??

Her saying "egg on my face for wanting something" pisses me off even more. Saying it to Kristen whose parents kicked her out just for being gay and who wants nothing more than to just belong . All comes from the fact that her own parents don't suck? Most of The Bad Kids' suffering has been dealt at the hand of their parents. Their journey has been them succeeding in spite of all of their trauma and set backs. Adaine's parents were literally hunting her down during sophomore year while on a quest to save the world during Tbk's vacation!

You can be a good adventurer without having evil or dead parents. We can literally take The Seven as an example they had normal families with normal family issues and yet they're great at what they do.

The Bad Kids whole thing started because Riz wanted to save his baby sitter and help the girls that were kidnapped. He didn't even know Kalvaxus killed his dad so he didn't even do it out of revenge in the first place.

Your backgrounds don't define you or your capabilities, your choices do. After everything, they chose to be kind and helpful which led them to become who they are. She was blinded by jealousy she chose to ignore that and hate them for it and their "unfair advantage".

Riz pulling so much weight for everyone and securing votes vs Kristen being the closest to failing out of school thus inadvertently screwing him. plus her inadvertently bringing Kalina back, who as it stands serves as an antagonistic and deeply painful force in Riz's life. there's just something really ripe and tragic about their friendship rn (even moreso if you wanna throw in the meta that the narrative was steered towards Riz running against Kipperlilly) and it's neither of their faults. I feel like I'm watching a disaster in slow motion.

kristen committing to certain facets of her life so hard that it’s almost (and sometimes is) unhealthy, and kristen knowing that she can’t handle certain things and ways of living (not being able to be what cassandra needs) but not being able to communicate that in a way that makes sense to others, and kristen with steps that vanish as soon as she moves to the next one, and kristen turning to avoidance as her method of dealing with things, and kristen being so indecisive about huge aspects of her life which creates conflict with others that she doesn’t know how to deal with because she’s a child, and kristen being WAY too relatable to Me growing up with undiagnosed adhd actually!
