it’s abt the fact when you build up someone so much and look up to them, after all this time no matter how much you miss them it’s scary.
bc seeing them means having to take them off that pedestal that you’ve been building up for years in their absence, based off the memories of a kid from a decade past. having to accept that they’re just another flawed person.
it’s having to accept how you’ve changed, that you aren’t that same kid they knew and if they even want the you now. it’s dreading the possibility that after all this time… you’ve just let them down. you didn’t become the person they wanted you to be, expected you to be. you’ve chnaged and you’ve become worse and suddenly this person that you’ve clung to for so long… doesn’t want you.
if you don’t know the answers then it means you can’t get a bad answer, either. for all that the unknown and waiting is painful, at least its safe

Im watching JRWI's Riptide for the first time and so forgive me if im missing context but when gillion is trapped in the crystal ball and remembers how he used to fight these simulations over and over again, always winning, only to look up and be met with disappintment from the elders,,,,bro,,,,like to think about how confused little gillion must have been for him to do exactly what he was trained to do, which was fight for victory of the sea over the land, and then for the elders to EXPECT him to turn around and not fight??? like little guy must have been so frustrated thinking that there was something wrong with him, that he wasnt a good champion. But this was a LEARNED behavior this is what he was TRAINED for, and yet despite this he learned compassion not from those who expected it from him but from those who showed it to him. Anyways im reallt normally about this D&D campaign heehoo!

thoughts about the prime defenders friendship and their dynamic with each other? :>
Okay honestly?? I think all of the PD characters have such good chemistry with each other- Like not romantically, but their relationships are so complex. Like you look at one of them, and how they act and treat others, and their moral compass and their goals, and it's like wow!! I think across all of the jrwi campaigns, the prime defenders have the most in-depth and most thought out interactions. Like you can tell that everyone loved their characters so much, and put tons of time and effort into them.
As a Dakota fan, I fucking love how he treats those around him. I love how somehow, the most battle hungry prime defender, the local idiot, is so incredibly smart and mature. The way he handles situations may be naive- But they way he handles his friends is so loving. During the shit show of belltech, the way he said that yes, I'm upset, but you guys are my friends, and i care about you, and I can see you are going through something, and we will talk later when you are okay. Like Dakota would not hesitate to drop someone he likes, or doubt someone he knows. He was willing to fight Doug because he betrayed his trust. And he was also willing to fight Doug because he knew Doug.
William's rationale for how he treats those around him too is also something I love. The way they are so much more energetic than him, and the way he won't try to match it but will tolerate it. The way he will step up, be their leader, their brains, and still somehow be an idiot because it's them, and he doesn't have to make the difficult calls all of the time. After Belltech, William was distraught, because he realized not only that he hurt his friends- But that he was going to hurt his best friends. That the relationships he has carefully managed were going to die because he wasn't careful. The way he much rather leave instead of hurt him, shut himself off instead of tell them- It's a weird way of saying "I love you," but it's William's.
And then Vynce. I can't wait for s3 when Condi writes him more, because he's already so good. He's a character so afraid of loss to the point he holds on and holds on tight, and he plays a clueless mediator half the time. He lost his father, lost his friends, his family, his home- But he found something better. Since I'm using Belltech as an example- I wonder if Vyncent ever looked at William and saw his father. Saw someone ready to betray the world for someone he cares about, to be protective in the most destructive way possible. I wonder how far Vynce's love for William and Dakota goes. I love his I'm sorry, I did the wrong thing, I won't leave you again, I won't let you fall, and all of his concerns and worries and careful love he places in the prime defenders. The family he found.
I think I've said it before, but I think William is like a shooting star (or a comet), he is something constantly falling and tumbling and he is burning with it all. He is something so beautiful in his decent and that in itself is dangerous. Vyncent is like a firework- Much more explosive, but can you turn away from the shock of it going off? As it pollutes the sky it never really belonged in, as it bursts with every emotion at once. And Dakota is either that very sky they are in, framing their fury and love and misery, or he is a fire extinguisher waiting and ready to put them out, to save them when they go too far. Or maybe he is something just like them, like the volcano they fell in, grumbling and rising around them, something just as destructive, more destructive. Something patient.
Now if you were asking about Relationships relationships between each other? I'm partial to Ghostknife- But honestly, I don't care if they end up together or if anyone ends up together. I think for Ghostknife to even happen, Vyncent needs his s3 development. I've seen every other ship though, and they all honestly work. But I kinda also want Ghostknife to stay as an awkward crush because it's comedic <3

what if i just rambled
like ik people have thoughts that they cant get out but what if i became so autistic enough that i understood the blorbo and- fuck it lets talk about a jrwi character again (spoilers obvi)
i couldnt choose between ollie and jay but i feel like ollie i got more to talk about for so ill do him first then jay cause they feel very connected for no fucking reason
so i think everyone acknowledges that ollie is just a kid but he really isnt just a kid? like he semi has the mind of an adult from the usage of the compass, because it didnt just mature him physically, but mentally too. from what i can guess, it was slow and unnoticeable until it was too big for ollie to know how to handle. thats when ollie was a kid.
yet ollie adapted, and while he really was 12 for that time still, he wasnt a kid. he grew up for a bit, he was an adult. and thats what scared him. because we all have been scared of growing too fast. so when ollie had that hit him like a truck, he didnt want to leave bed and shit. yet he became the adult his body reflected. sure, he never was fully an adult, but thats because hes not just an adult, hes still a kid.
and after he had adjusted to it, he got to have it for a couple more days. then it was gone. all the growth was now unnecessary and he didnt know what to do again. yet he didnt handle it like he did the first time. he thought about it. and again, he got over it. yet he didnt let go of what maturing so quick taught him, and hes still grown after. because hes something in between an adult and child, yet its not a teen or something.
another thing to note: ollie didnt have a say every fucking time. when he aged up, he didnt ask for it. he asked for a way to get him home and maybe it brought out another desire ollie had inside him by using it so much (touching on that more later). when ollie adjusted, he didnt ask to. he probably just wanted to curl away in that blanket and hide, because it was scary out there. yet somewhere inside he thought earl was right (earl calls him a baby or smth because he just keeps on staying in bed) and forced himself to adapt the new adult body. and when he was aged back, he didnt get a say. chip just decided it, thinking thats what ollie wanted. and he did, he did want to be a kid again. yet he wasnt ready yet. but when would he be?
so why do i bring up so much his lack of input? because it sounds similar to how he got onto the albatross. he first was taken from his home, then working with marshal jon, then working with the albatross. now being so amazed by the sea yet scared of its dangers hes been accustomed to quite a bit now, soon enough hes going back home and has to act like he didnt have the most terrifying and great adventure of his lifetime (another detail i wanted to add is theres no way jon and ollie didnt encounter some form of sea monsters or danger after being out at sea so long, we jsut arent told anything about it so yeah extra trauma thoughts).
so to me, ollie's lying (like his dad aka chip would /j). to me, ollie's desire wasnt just to return home. i doubt it was more then just a whiff of a thought that loomed in ollies head. because yeah, he wanted to go home, but not yet. he wanted to be on the ship longer, but not jsut that. he wanted to be able to help his friends. he didnt like seeing his friends come back beaten and bruised, yet being in the corner doing nothing. and he was told by chip that when he was older he could hang out with them on the ship again. so ollie, unknowing of consequences that could happen, wishes for not just a way home, but a way to help. i literally could write theory shit for this cause its not just thoughts for once! niklaus has said that the people's desires can twist from their greed, and maybe ollie didnt realize his greed (or the amount he was asking to be brought real was "greedy" and ollie didnt notice) so it twisted his desire (it being the compass), thus why niklaus doesnt understand what happened with ollie, because accidentally beign greddy can happen, or being greedy in the eyes of another.
i literally dont think ill have the motivation to wrap this up yet so ill do so later

The Riptide pirates are literally the perfect trio and I will be explaining why in excruciating detail. They've grown so close that without one of them, they wouldn't be able to function as a group. All three of them are dependant on each other now in the most found family way and I am very emotional about these stupid pirates.
(SPOILERS FOR JRWI RIPTIDE UP UNTIL EPISODE 87)
First and most notably, Gillion Tidestrider. He did dissappear, and we all saw how that turned out for the remaining two Riptide Captains. Gillion is their compass, he points them in the right direction, though more metaphorically and physically. His strict moral code is most likely the only reason they've been able to do as much good as they have. Time and time again he's been there to remind his friends about what makes them good and worthy, keeping them from straying too far off the right path. Without him there, they have no direction, drifting aimlessly until eventually breaking apart.
Jay Ferin is their ship's wheel. With the right direction to go, she's the brains of the captains that makes sure they're not going to get themselves killed. More often than not, she is what pulls them away from certain death. Of the three of them, she has the most common sense, and is often what grounds her crew in reality when they get too caught up in their own heads. Without Jay, they would either have gotten themselves killed through their own impulsiveness ans stupidity, or killed each other through their self-absorbed stubbornness.
Of their crew, Chip is the glue that holds wood beneath their feet, and the very ship they sail on. He is their foundation, and without him, there would be no Riptide pirates. Though he started off in a rough spot, over time Chip has grown into someone his crew can depend on, and he tries his hardest to keep them together. Their ship has splintered and cracked with time, yet he has glued together every break in the ship to the best of his abilities. It's not perfect, but it's proof that he's trying. Without him their ship would certainly have broken by now without him to mend the tears he may or may not have caused.
I also love how, at least currently, none of the Riptide Captains could function alone. Without the only people who have shown him real and unconditional love, Gillion would surely revert back to believing his only worth comes from his usefulness, and with no direction, he would float aimlessly in the ocean once again. As of now, Jay is not in the mental state to face her family alone, and nothing good could come from the inevitable confrontation with her family if her co-captains aren't by her side. Without his crew, Chip would be lost again, only just recently being able to fully let go of the chains he'd put on himself because of Arlin. He'd be alone, again, and there's only so many times the people he love can leave him before he finally breaks.
In conclusion, JRWI Riptide is the best dnd podcast and if you don't listen to it already, you should because it is an experience. Yes it's long, but it is so incredibly worth it. These pirates will live in my head rent free until the show ends, which it won't because I can't fathom the idea of it ending.

This song was actually added to my playlists because I had a mini fic moment in mind already but it wasn’t fitting in with any projects I was posting so I didn’t write it until now. (In the same timeline as Brothers: Verb: To Reflect With Violent Honesty)
JRWI Drey Ferin mini character study, contains mild spoilers from up to episode 112, mentions of guns, >600 words
Captain Beau sits Drey down rather firmly.
The captains quarters are normally cozy and welcoming, strange for a pirate ship but fitting to Beau. Now, it’s hard to feel anything but shame under the context of his actions, and Drey finds it difficult to relax his uneasy shoulders. He doesn’t apologize, just sits and waits for blame.
Jayson had been there on the dock. Drey had, for one moment, looked him in the eyes and felt entirely justified. He’s a pirate now, forging his own path, he doesn’t have to care what his brother thinks.
Then Jayson opened his mouth and it all went out the window as Drey dropped his shoulder and charged him.
It wasn’t a long fight. Jayson has been stronger than him for years, and Drey didn’t take the opportunity to go for his gun when it appeared.
Beau motions towards his gun and Drey sets it on the table obediently, long past behind afraid to be without it in his presence. “Tell me about it.”
Drey cringes at himself when confusion precedes relief. Still expecting rejection even after over a year of being met with only compassion.
It takes him a few moments to begin to explain. He didn’t fight as hard as he could even after promising the crew he would. He opens and closes his mount a few times before landing on, “He’s my brother. It-“ it feels silly to say it, but the captain understands the importance of honesty and impresses it upon his crew, “It’s his daughter’s birthday tomorrow.”
Beau just nods and sits back. Quiet but open, his eyes still full of trust.
“I’m feel like I shouldn’t just shoot him, if only for that.” Guilt pulls at him from every direction, hurt his brother, hurt the crew, hurt himself. Every path hurts his family. Why is it there are no options without casualties?
Sitting forward, Beau pulls an envelope out from his coat. “He sent you this. I’m sorry. It was a while ago, and I hid it from you.”
Drey's heart sinks. Both at the Captain’s lie and at the seal of the letter. Official. Crisp even after days at sea. He's being disowned. Formally.
“I-“ He shakes his head, reaching for the letter. He wants nothing more than to shrink away from it but he holds his head as high as he would in front of Jayson. “I think I know what this is.”
Beau nods again. “Me too.” His grip on the letter is firm but after a gentle tug he relents, “that’s why I wanted to hide it.”
They both sit quietly. Drey fingers the seal of the envelope but doesn’t open it.
“Finn cast anti-magic on him just then.” Beau says quietly. “He wasn’t going to be pulling his punches like you.” There’s a quiet you don’t deserve to be treated like that that lingers in the air. The sentence seems ever present when he talks to Beau about his family.
They sit in quiet again. And Drey finally opens the envelope, reading the letter and then rereading it when he blinks the mist from his vision.
“You’re stuck between two, Drey." Beau puts one hand on the letter and one on his pistol, "The hope that your family changes for the better and allows you to stay, or the hope for the independence you could gain if you leave and burn the ship you left on. Neither hope is safe. And there will never be a time that feels right to take either path.”
Drey opens his mouth but is cut off as Beau takes the letter, writing something on the back.
“-you don’t have to know now. And you don’t have to choose now. But I can see that the indecision is drowning you. So when you know which one you’re going to shoot for,” he pushes Drey’s pistol and the amended letter back towards him, “I’d better see you shoot that shit.”
