'The Lucy Show' first aired on television sixty years ago today, October 1, 1962. This second television series for Lucy was adapted from a book written by Irene Kampen. Irene Kampen (1922-1998) was a reporter and author who wrote 10 books based upon her own life experiences. After her divorce, she was forced to work to support her daughter. To help make ends meet she took in a divorced woman who had a son to help pay the bills. From this experience, she wrote 'Life Without George' which was later adapted to what we all know as 'The Lucy Show'. In the adapted version, Lucy Carmichael was a widow and NOT a divorcee. Vivian Vance would be cast to play the divorcee, Vivian Bagley. (Vivian would be the first person to play a divorced woman as a TV series regular.) In 1965, Irene would write a sequel to 'Life Without George' titled 'Europe Without George'. She would go on to write many more books including 'Due to Lack of Interest Tomorrow Has Been Canceled' and 'Nobody Calls at This Hour Just to Say Hello'. She also wrote for many magazines and in later years became a popular lecturer. In 1975 Irene said, "Every time 'The Lucy Show' appears on a TV screen, and it appears a lot, I get a royalty check. I love Lucy." #lucilleball #vivianvance #thelucyshow #authors #adapted #books #divorcee #sitcoms #premier #widow #ilovelucy #classictv #ralphhart #jimmygarrett #bookadaptations #waynelvslcy https://www.instagram.com/p/CjKQT59O283/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @love_lucille_ball ・・・ "On Thursday nights before the filming, we'd all sit in the green room they had at the corner of the stage. I'd sit on Dick's lap, and he'd tell me stories. I was enthralled. One Thursday night, my mom had to go somewhere else, to the dressing room or someplace, and while she was gone, Dick gave me a dip out of his can— which was a beer— and gave me a couple of puffs off his cigar. And I'm seven years old. During this particular episode, I had to come in and give Lucy a good-night kiss. Now after a couple of puffs of his cigar and beer, I come in and give her the kiss. She continued with the scene, but I'll never forget the look in her eye. I'm sure I reeked— and she knew why. You heard her through the entire soundstage, yelling, "DICK— MY DRESSING ROOM!" That night when we got home, my mom had a talk with me, and Dick never gave me any more beer." - Jimmy Garrett, who played Lucy's son Jerry in 'The Lucy Show' #lucilleball #jimmygarrett #ilovelucy #thelucyshow
