GREETINGS, SLOBS.
How ya been? Got some Record Store Day money left over? Blow it here! The new CHEATER SLICKS “Ill Fated Cusses” LP is here. Never has a band been so consistently radical, and this album is everything you hoped it would be: crunchy, noisy, dark, and demented with the underlying beauty they’ve always blessed us hopeless freaks with. Jeff from TOMMY and the COMMIES has his latest solo STRANGE ATTRACTOR effort making a Slovenly mail order appearance, and we gotta say, garage punk don’t get much better! Power-pop yer bag? Then grab the two new archival releases from Hunstville, Bamalama’s finest NIGHTMARE BOYZZZ (an LP and a 7inch!) and make sure to scoop their classic Slovenly long-player “Bad Patterns” while you're at it. If you’re hoping to expand your narrow r’n’r tastes, the new “Four” double LP from HEAVY METAL foots the bill nicely. Some great new 45rpm repros are also making the scene to help you get your dance parties started right and raw. We got lots of ‘em and you won’t be finding originals in dollar bins any time soon.

Jimmy Nolen aka "The Father of Funk Guitar" was born in Oklahoma City. At age 14, he taught himself to play the guitar by listening to blues music on the radio. He's perhaps most famous for joining James Brown on tour where he developed the famous style of picking known as "chicken scratch." You can hear his chicken scratch technique in James Brown’s songs “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” and “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.” Nolen and his band mates are also credited for converting the soul music of the 1960s into funk. 🎸🎼

THE FIRST PERSON TO PLAY BLUES ON AN ELECTRIC GUITAR -- THE FIRST GUITAR HERO IN THE HISTORY OF RECORDED MUSIC.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on Aaron Thibeaux "T-Bone" Walker (1910 – 1975) American blues musician, pioneer and innovator of the jump blues, West Coast blues, and electric blues sounds. Artwork by William Stout for his "Legends of the Blues" portraits series.
LEGACY & OVERVIEW: ""How significant was T-Bone Walker to the evolution of the blues?" he repeats the question. “Well,” he says after a long pause. “You look back at everyone who’s ever stood in front of a band playing the guitar and it all traces back to one man. T-Bone Walker was the first person to ever play blues on an electric guitar: How significant is that?”
But Vaughan knows Walker’s contributions go deeper than having access to new technology. Leaving it at that is like lauding a brilliant author for being the first to write a book using a word processor.
“T-Bone created a whole new language for the guitar,” says Vaughan, whose concise leads and impeccable sense of swing and rhythm show that his guitar speaks T-Bone fluently. He reaches for his 1951 Gibson hollow-body electric on the couch in his manager’s office on South Lamar; axe in hands he seems more comfortable talking about Walker, whose work in the 1940s was as major a musical influence as Texas has produced. Vaughan starts playing riffs you’ve heard on records by the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Vaughan’s former Fabulous Thunderbirds and the conversation comes alive.
"You’ve heard this one a hundred times before,” he says, playing the driving intro to “The Crawl,” a T-Bird mainstay. “That’s a T-Bone lick. Here’s another,” he says, strumming the harmonic chords that open Walker’s most enduring composition, “Call It Stormy Monday.” Vaughan then hits a note and sustains it with a finger wiggle a la B.B. King, performs a jazz-billy run like the ones Scotty Moore used to play with Elvis Presley, executes the bent-note double stops identified with Chuck Berry, then apes the choppy rhythms of nascent funk guitarist Jimmy Nolen of James Brown’s band. These licks all started with Walker, who was born in Linden and raised in Dallas. The electric guitar has been the defining instrument of the past 50 years and T-Bone Walker was the first guitar hero.
“You know how everyone was blown away when they first heard Jimi Hendrix?” Vaughan asks. “Well, imagine what it must’ve been like to hear T-Bone for the first time, when those riffs were brand new.” Hendrix had contemporaries who were doing amazing things — Clapton, Jeff Beck, Link Wray, Buddy Guy — but T-Bone was on an island. He was the template for so many great guitarists who would follow. In Texas, a Mecca of electric blues guitarists, you had Rockdale’s Pee Wee Crayton, Orange’s Gatemouth Brown, Beaumont’s Johnny Winter. Dallas gave us Freddie King and the Vaughan brothers and Houston could boast Albert Collins, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Johnny Copeland and Billy Gibbons, all carrying T-Bone’s torch."

AllMusic Staff Pick: Universal Congress Of  The Sad and Tragic Demise of Big Fine Salty Black Wind
A winning mixture of funky backbeats, jazz dissonance, and twisting and turning rock & roll. Joe Baiza spends more time than usual singing on this record, and that's not always a good thing -- his vocal range is limited as is his expressiveness -- but his quirky, understated guitar playing shows the influences of Blood Ulmer, Sonny Sharrock, and Jimmy Nolen, and is what makes up for his enthusiastic but limited singing. Tracks like "Tight Heat," "Uh Huh," and "Small World" are little gems that bob and weave around grooves so tight you couldn't pry them apart with a crowbar.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements — Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol.1 (The Embedded Sets) (Pi)
Tumblr media
Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. 1 (The Embedded Sets) by Steve Coleman
It’s a bit deceptive to state simply that Five Elements has been around for a few decades. While it’s true chronologically, the statement obscures the fact that 5E is constantly changing, the base workshop for altoist/composer Steve Coleman’s relentless conceptual and musical imagination. There are musical constants — intricacy, density, and tons of rhythmic momentum — and some longstanding personnel, too. But what makes Coleman’s music so vital is how he keeps turning over and reinventing his sound, even as his alto and compositional imprint are unmistakable.
For the group’s first live recording in 15 years, comprised of two sets at the Vanguard, Coleman is joined by trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, guitarist Miles Okazaki, bassist Anthony Tidd and the outrageously good drummer Sean Rickman. It’s not just that Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol.1 (The Embedded Sets) contains over two and a half hours of music; listeners also get the opportunity to explore the group’s varied approaches to some of the same tunes from set to set. It’s something that we jazz nerds love to do, and there are riches here.
The first set pops up with the filthy mid-tempo funk of “Horda,” and just like that the group finds the sweet spot: a deeply organic groove that’s simultaneously the most ridiculously balanced complexity that you can’t quite count along with. This particular configuration of Five Elements has some serious chemistry built from many years of playing. That’s nowhere more evident than Coleman’s and Finlayson’s synergy, playing off each other or nailing the unisons. But it really is about the group sound in total. Things are always trailing off, overlapping someone else’s rhythm, shading bright or lurking just below. There is just so damn much going on in this music — so how does it sound so tight all the time?
One answer is that each player understands that they aren’t a typical soloist so much as a moving part in Coleman’s whole. Consider Okazaki (whose recent solo recording of the entire Thelonious Monk oeuvre is required listening, by the way). He’s got a real talent for finding nuggets of rhythm or melody at the heart of a large sound, turning them inside out and reinventing them. On “Djw,” for example, he locates a stuttering Jimmy Nolen figure that’s a bracing contrast to the Tidd-Rickman flow. Likewise, Okazaki bounces brilliantly through the circuitous, burbling post-bop funk of “twf.” Finlayson is just outrageously good, dialed in completely to what makes Coleman’s music work. On the whirligig “Figit Time” and on “Djw” he cranks out some simply bonkers improvising, growling lines, trading polyrhythms with Okazaki, playing so much trumpet that sometimes you feel as if you need to hold on for dear life.
And yet there’s a surprising amount of space for music so dense. Despite the complexity of the barnstorming “Change the Guard” or the tense, multi-tempo “rmT,” the structure isn’t a cage, but a framework for play. This is another benefit of the live versions: on many tunes, Coleman’s own a capella openings reveal how he hears the tempo and phrasing on deck. His alto sounds inquisitive to start “Little Girl I’ll Miss You/Embedded #1,” whose group performances takes the cues for some fairly chill counterpoint, tight harmony, and tasty brushwork. The slow, deliberate opening to “idHw” yields more spacious and free music than one often hears with this group. And the harmonic minor riffing that opens “Nfr” uncorks one of the finest neo-bop heads here.
The music resists closure or summation. But if one thing sums it up, it’s the sheer energy of it all. You know this from Coleman’s own vocalisms throughout, from his direction (“Open up! Open up!”) to his scatting duos with Tidd, to his end-of-set address to the audience (directing them to his website, he says “There’s lots of videos to teach people how to lose gigs”). Tight but loose, able to start and stop on a dime, this music is effervescent. Bring on Vol. 2!

Hush now child, and don’t you cry Your folks might understand you, by and by Move on up, toward your destination You may find from time to time Complication
Bight your lip, and take a trip Though there may be wet road ahead And you cannot slip So move on up for peace will find Into the steeple of beautiful…

Good morning Inhabitants of Geb The Earth 🌎🌍 and Happy Hump Day to you as well... May Amen Ra send blessings upon you with his light and with it Life... Been finding time to practice some guitar 🎸 again keeping the chops in shape keep the fingers loose and nimble... Still working on the perfect Tone ..I'm getting closer to it ....One I definitely try to do is not sound like Jimi Hendrix which most Funk guitar players who call themselves " Rocking Out" do...I hear it all the time on Social Media...Much as I do like Hendrix I don't want to sound like him...I do like his "Little Wing" or "Castles Made of Sand" clean tones...And I love the Sounds from the Band of Gypsys Great Early Funk Rock... Actually when I was leaning how to play I listened to Ernie Isley...He took the Hendrix influences to The Next Level...And So Did Prince...Then Van Halen came in...And Players like Malmsteen,Vai ,Satriani, Holdsworth , DiMieola,Di Martini and one of my all time heroes George Lynch...Taking The Level of playing to the Next Level...I do have my Funk Guitar Heroes..Jesse Johnson, Tom McDermott, Jimmy Nolen, Charlie Singleton, Eddie Hazel Spacey T, Catfish Collins Blackbyrd McKnight Micheal Hampton etc..Trying to blend the best of both worlds.. Funkiness with Technical Ability...I Could keep naming my favorite guitar players but the list would be very long..But it's all in part to take the Funk to The Next Level...Pure Funk Wisdom... Welcome to The New Age of Funk...Be a part of it..So Believe..The True Light and Power of Funk has arrived.. Unk-Tu-Amun The Last Pharaoh has Spoken...So let it be written So let it be known.. Life and Hotep to all.... (at Pensacola, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLHbwlEhCZv/?igshid=ugknpsv2ivny
