Top Members of Far-Right Swedish Party With Neo-Nazi Roots Meet Israeli Minister in Knesset
David Stavrou, Jonathan Lis and Noa Shpigel Jan 29, 2024
A delegation of senior members from the far-right party in Sweden, the Swedish Democrats, arrived in Israel on an unofficial visit and met on Monday with Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chickli in the Knesset.
The party, currently the second-largest in the Swedish parliament, has roots in neo-Nazi and antisemitic ideologies. It is one of several European parties with which Israel has refrained from establishing official ties.
The delegation has visited Yad Vashem, one of the crossings connecting Israel to the West Bank, and the Old City in Jerusalem.
Officials in Sweden following the party suggest that the visit is part of its attempt to whitewash its antisemitic and racist positions by presenting itself as a friend of Israel.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the party leader, Jimmie Akesson, wrote: “It is clear that our parties and our nations share common values,” accompanied by a photo of himself with Minister Chikli.
Party members told Haaretz that they met with several ministers during their visit but refused to disclose their names.
Tumblr media
Israel has so far refrained from engaging with the Swedish Democrats not only due to their neo-Nazi roots but also because members of the party have disseminated conspiracy theories and expressed racist, antisemitic, and Islamophobic sentiments in recent years.
Israel’s Ambassador to Stockholm, Ziv Nevo Kulman, even declared that Israel does not maintain and will not establish future relations with the party. The Israeli foreign ministry, which was not involved in coordinating the visit, clarified on Monday that “there is no change in policy towards the party.”
Among the delegation members who visited the Knesset were party leader Akesson, the chairman of the Swedish parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Aron Emilsson, the head of the party’s parliamentary group, Linda Lindberg, and the head of the party’s group in the European Parliament, Charlie Weimers.
Weimers is one of the party’s top members who already visited Israel in May of last year. During the previous visit, it was reported that party leaders met with Knesset member Amit Halevi from Likud and former Knesset member Michael Kleiner, who now serves as the president of the Likud’s court.
Though part of the Swedish political establishment today, the Sweden Democrats do indeed have roots in Nazism. Some of the party’s founders were known Nazis, such as its first auditor, Gustaf Ekström, who was a Waffen-SS veteran.
The party’s first spokesperson Leif Ericsson and its first chairman Anders Klarström were both active in various neo-Nazi and extremist right-wing parties, and the chairman of the party’s youth organization, Robert Vesterlund, was also a known neo-Nazi. During the 80’s and 90’s, the party was a marginal force in Swedish politics, and it began distancing itself from extremism and aligning itself closer to mainstream politics in the mid 90’s.
The party entered the Swedish parliament for the first time in 2010, and in the elections held a year and a half ago, it received over 20% of the votes. Until a few years ago, the party was ostracized by parties across the political spectrum in Sweden and was not considered for inclusion in any coalition.
However, due to a change in approach by two traditional right-wing parties, the Swedish Democrats became an integral part of the right-wing bloc after the elections, with the government in Stockholm entirely dependent on their support. Party members wield significant influence over the government’s policies and hold key positions in parliamentary committees, including foreign affairs, justice, and industry and trade.
In recent months, the party has been attempting to position itself as “the most pro-Israel party in Sweden” and distance itself from its antiemetic and neo-Nazi past. However, in 2021, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet revealed that the party leader in the second-largest city council in Sweden, Gothenburg, Jörgen Fogelklou, had posted antisemitic and racist statements on social media, such as “It is clear that the Jews are the root of all evil in the world.”
Two years ago, it was exposed that some party members had connections with neo-Nazi movements even in recent years. For instance, one party member in southern Sweden, Jonas Lingren, publicly supported rock bands advocating for “white supremacy” and used the slogan “Skinhead 88” (88 is a known code for Heil Hitler, i.e., HH).

Sweden's election was too close to call on Sunday night, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said.
Exit polls at first predicted victory for the incumbent left-wing coalition, but results later suggested the right-wing bloc could narrowly win.
Crime and integration of communities were major issues in the campaign, and the far-right Sweden Democrats look set to become the second-largest party.
It could take until Wednesday for all votes to be counted.
Soon after polls closed, an early exit poll by Sweden's public broadcaster suggested Ms Andersson's coalition of four left-wing parties would narrowly win, with 49.8% of the vote compared to 49.2%.
But the left's celebrations were perhaps premature, as later partial results put the right-wing group ahead, with a projected 176 of 349 seats in parliament after 94% of electoral districts were counted.
As the race is so close, the final result may have to wait until all votes, including postal and advance votes, are counted over the next few days.
Whatever the result, the far-right Sweden Democrats have made significant gains, appearing to become the country's second-largest party behind the Social Democrats.
However, its leader, Jimmie Akesson, is unlikely to become prime minister even if the right-wing bloc wins the largest number of seats. Instead, Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson is likely to take that role, with the Sweden Democrats hoping to become part of his government.
Swedes are used to complex coalition politics but even here this election race has been viewed as nail-biting and at times confusing by voters from across the spectrum.
There is a lot to digest. Magdalena Andersson's Social Democrat party looks certain to remain the largest. Yet this election could be a victory for the right. The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats are on course to come in second place. But it's the leader of the third largest party, the Moderates, who would become prime minister in a future right-wing government, since he's seen as the most palatable option within the bloc of right parties hoping they've edged a majority. And there's still a chance things could change, as more votes are counted.
A right-wing government would represent a major departure for Sweden after eight years of Social Democrat-led governments. At a coffee shop in central Stockholm this morning, I overheard two voters worried about a deepening anti-immigrant rhetoric. But a cab driver from Argentina I chatted to told me he's not worried about life changing dramatically, arguing that the deadlock between the right and left blocs could still make it hard for whichever side gets in to push through major policy changes.

A Sweden Democrats official was suspended by the far-right party for making degrading comments about the Jewish Holocaust victim known for her diary, Anne Frank.
In an Instagram posting that has now been deleted, Rebecka Fallenkvist called Frank "immoral", among other things, according to Swedish media.
Frank, who wrote her diary while in hiding in Amsterdam before she was captured, died at age 15 in Nazi Germany's Bergen-Belsen death camp in February 1945.
The posting by Fallenkvist, a 26-year-old head of television programming for the Sweden Democrats, prompted strong reactions from Jewish groups and the Israeli ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman.
"I strongly condemn this despicable insult, disrespectful of the memory of Anne Frank," he said in a tweet. His posting included what appeared to be a screenshot of Fallenkvist's Instagram post.
The Sweden Democrats' media director, Oskar Cavalli-Bjorkman, told the Swedish news agency TT late Saturday that the party would take Fallenkvist's "insensitive and inappropriate" comments seriously and launch an internal investigation on the matter.
While it remained unclear what kind of point Fallenkvist wanted to make with her comments on Frank's diary, she later sent a text message to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter saying she had been misinterpreted.
Sweden Democrats was founded in the 1980s by people who had been active in right-wing extremist groups, including neo-Nazis.
The party emerged as Sweden's second-largest party in the 11 September election under the leadership of Jimmie Akesson.
On Friday, three Swedish centre-right parties agreed to form a coalition government with the support of the Sweden Democrats that has moved toward mainstream politics but retains a hard line on immigration.

SWEDEN New law will allow people as young as 16 to legally change their gender
Tumblr media
COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The Swedish parliament passed a law Wednesday lowering the age required for people to legally change their gender from 18 to 16.
Those under 18 still need approval from a guardian, a doctor and the National Board of Health and Welfare.
No longer required is a gender dysphoria diagnosis, defined by medical professionals as psychological distress experienced by those whose gender expression does not match their sex assigned at birth.
Sweden joins a number of countries with similar laws, including Denmark, Norway, Finland and Spain.
The vote was 234-94 with 21 lawmakers absent.
Sweden Democrats, the populist party with far-right roots that supports the government in parliament but is not part of the government, opposed the law.
Jimmie Akesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats, told reporters it was “deplorable that a proposal that clearly lacks the support of the population is so lightly voted through.”
But Johan Hultberg with the Moderates of Sweden’s conservative prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, called the outcome “gratifying.” Hultberg called it “a cautious but important reform for a vulnerable group. I’m glad we’re done with it.”
Kristersson’s center-right coalition had been split on the issue, with the Moderates and the Liberals largely supporting the law while the small Christian Democrats were against it.
Tumblr media
Peter Sidlund Ponkala, chairman of the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights, known by its Swedish acronym RFSL, called the law’s passage “a step in the right direction” and “a recognition for everyone who has been waiting for decades for a new law.”
Tumblr media
Elias Fjellander, chairman of the organization’s youth branch, said it would make life better for its members. “Going forward, we are pushing to strengthen gender-affirming care, to introduce a third legal gender and to ban conversion attempts,” Fjellander said in a statement.
On Friday, German lawmakers approved similar legislation, making it easier for transgender, intersex and nonbinary people to change their name and gender in official records directly at registry offices.
