li xiangyi/li lianhua and jiao liqiao both spent ten years obsessively doing everything for the sake of someone they loved. someone they missed, someone who saved their life a long time ago and they never forgot it. but that all turned to dust when they learned that whatever they'd thought the other person had felt for them was actually a lie, and they had no route left but to face that reality in whatever way they could grasp

When people in the martial arts world talk about beauties, we're tied. Tell me. Between us, who is prettier?

do you ever think about how when we see their backstory, di feisheng and jiao liqiao are both victims? jiao liqiao physically restrained and surrounded by jeering, threatening men about to assault her; di feisheng restrained by mind control and jeered at, threatened, until he has no choice but to fight? both of them trapped, her knowing that she can't even hope for the escape of death, him knowing that if he dies here, he'll never be free?
and jiao liqiao takes that terror and violation and sees how it could be a tool she could wield.
and di feisheng takes that terror and violation and sees how it is an unendurable moral injury that has to be eliminated.
do you every think about how they were both so focused, both so driven, both so fully fixated on the single person who was their goal, their reason for everything?
and jiao liqiao let her obsession with di feisheng turn her into someone who would destroy the world, would destroy di feisheng himself, as long as it meant he would be hers.
and di feisheng let his obsession turn him into someone who would save a world he doesn't care about, would give up everything he's worked for, if it meant that li xiangyi would live.

Question Jiao-jie, understand Jiao-jie, become Jiao-jie, surpass Jiao-jie.
You see, I take the parts that I remember and stitch them back together             to make a creature that will do what I say or love me back. -- "Litany in Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out" By Richard Siken

The women in Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Normally I feel like I have to turn off my feminism brain for some of these shows, but I was beyond pleasantly surprised at how deftly the main female characters in MLC were handled...
Qiao Wanmian: The perfect set-up for a female character only brought in to serve the main male character's emotional arc (usually by getting fridged), but she... gets her shit together, takes over the sect, and becomes a boss ass bitch?? SLAY. She respects both Li Lianhua and herself enough to recognize it's never going to happen between them and she needs to live her life on her terms. She also realizes Ye Baiyi Xiao Zijin is a piece of trash and she deserves better. -1 for excessive teary pining for Li Xiangyi, though tbh I can relate, because I too will be obsessively and excessively crying over Li Lianhua for 10+ years. Embarassing for both of us. Still, 14/10 for a self-respecting lady
Master He: THE mom of all time. Teases Fang Duobing for his obessesion with his boyfriend Li Lianhua. Pulls the "I'm not your biological mom but I raised you, bitch" shit and it works. Steps in, fists raised, whenever her son needs help in a fight. Loves torture devices. Meanwhile, you keep forgetting if Fang Duobing's dad is dead or if he's just on the couch playing duolingo like the dad in Barbie. But it's fine because mom carries the whole fam + family business anyway. 16/10 milf
The princess: Seemed more pissed than heartbroken that Fang Duobing ran away from their marriage, which neatly avoids the "spurned woman" trope. Is so freaking cute I wanna squish her cheeks. Acts like a realistic pouty teen but also wields her princess power like it's nobody's business. Understands Fang Duobing's desires at the end and respects them both enough to let him follow his heart. 15/10 would adopt
Jiao Liqiao: Batshit psycho. I love her. Unhinged and horny on main. Infinity/10

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that JLQ's clear refusal to believe DFS could even be slightly gay is the one and only reason she didn't try to skin Wuyan alive. Wuyan who, is trusted by DFS, allowed extremely close proximity, and has all the same skills DFS values in her. TBH if there was a possible love rival outside of anyone other than LXY - she should have suspected Wuyan first, before any of the 12 Pillars.
It's sad that we didn't get enough episodes to see a little more of Wuyan for anything, or JLQ for her actual Alliance duties -- but I know enough about what it takes to run operations that I can extrapolate the skill sets needed:
Skills they both have:
budgeting and currency exchange/issues
managerial acumen/ability to organize and move large groups of people
planning
communication at both upper and lower levels
resourcing
logistics
strong understanding of timing, topography, weather and how to deal with issues
stealth
esoteric knowledge for random shit they likely have to source or deal with themselves due to rarity, etc
negotiations
how to present yourself to the public
thorough and systemic thinking
planning for failure
Where JLQ fails but Wuyan succeeds:
ability to anticipate what DFS wants
ability to deliver what DFS wants in the way he wants it
ability to not sexually harass DFS
putting DFS' desires over their own (Whatever Wuyan's feelings are, we have no idea)
Where Wuyan fails but JLQ succeeds:
getting public credit for hitting their kpis
choosing to not be subservient
public leadership / getting public buy-in
It's interesting that with the both of them -- if DFS chose at any random time to just get up and leave Jinyuan Alliance behind -- both would immediately drop everything and follow him.
They're both used to seeing DFS' back - Wuyan because he deliberately positions himself there regardless of what DFS seems to wish (his own show of willfulness). JLQ because DFS is always walking away from her.
And of the two - i feel like DFS would likely take Wuyan with him, while leaving JLQ in charge of the things he doesn't care about.
So yeah. I'm still surprised Wuyan wasn't killed before DFS came back from seclusion. It's pure speculation but maybe his outward presentation of being a servant is the thing that saved him. Why does he play a servant when DFS himself is like, "You do know I think you're supposed to be standing up there with the higher ranking ppl, right?" Is it from a sense of distrust of everyone, leading him to create a persona? An emotional need to serve DFS? A not-so-secret kink? A sense of loyalty that he feels he can only express in this manner?
Just what history do they share that DFS feels comfortable enough to cry in front of him? Twice. Both times while mourning LXY/LLH.
I have so many questions.

so do we feel like talking about how jiao liqiao subconsciously chooses to obsess over di feisheng, specifically, because he is so unattainable. the fantasy can never come true, and so he can never turn out to be lesser than she thinks he is, can never be like other men. he can continue to be her savior, the one who's different, and she can both ache at her wishes remaining unfulfilled and also never have to face the reality of them. she can maintain the illusion that if it was him, she could accept and desire being subjugated to a man. but every scene where he pretends to return her interest feels wrong, a pantomime that leaves the both of them on edge. she is given even a mimicry of affection or attention and it's so clear she doesn't know what to do with it and it frightens her. and when he does, finally, snap, when he hurts her in a way that must remind her so much of her past--she is forced to realize that the only way she can have this is if she is the one in control, if she is "the emperor" and di feisheng her "wife". because the only way she can conceptualize this dynamic is if there is somebody who rules and somebody who is ruled over. when it wasn't real, she had the luxury of believing she could let him rule her. but when she's face to face with it, she needs to be the one on top--of the relationship, of the world.
