Every single time I hear someone referring to a Jewish person as ‘white’ another little piece of my soul dies.

As a non-American Jew, the first time I ever heard Jews being referred to as white was when I was a full grown adult watching an American reality show. I FOR REAL thought they were making that shit up in order to generate buzz and get people talking about the controversy! That’s how foreign the notion was to me. Imagine my shock and horror to discover that THIS IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN THE UNITED STATES.

It’s the way that referring to Jews as ‘white’ ERASES white people’s antisemitism, it erases our persecution at the hands of white people, it erases our suffering, it erases the OTHERING that Jews had suffered for CENTURIES from actual white people.

Based on what the skin tone of some Jews in a few places might afford them SO LONG AS NO ONE KNOWS THEY’RE JEWISH.

If you have to hide your real identity in order to enjoy the privileges of being perceived as white, YOU’RE NOT WHITE (this is true for Jews just like it is true for other white-passing People of Color).

White passing is not the same as white.

WHITE PASSING IS NOT THE SAME AS WHITE.

Jews are NOT white. Not a single one of us. Not even the ones who can pass as white, let alone all of the Jews who can’t.

Hi Twitter is currently calling Anne Frank “white” and saying she had “white privilege” while being murdered in the Holocaust for being a Jew so I am officially done with the “are Jews white” discourse- and my answer is now permanently NO.

I would been MORE than willing to discuss the nuances of modern, American perceptions of race and ethnicity, the ways in which white-passing Jews can benefit from being perceived as white, the complicated circumstances under which, in America, Jews began to be perceived as white as opposed to a non-European Middle-Eastern minority...

But no. No more. No, Jews are not white. Jews do not fit into the bullshit black or white American racial framework. Jews do not fit into whiteness on the basis of acceptance into white supremacy as an equal. Jews do not fit into whiteness on the basis of whiteness equating safety.

Since y’all can’t seem to leave a young girl murdered in the fucking Holocaust alone and seem determined to use her, like you use all dead Jews, as your fucking props in your constant battle for most woke and progressive. I’m done.

Jews aren’t white. We never have been. We never will be. We do not fit into the construction of race that operates in America now, we CERTAINLY never have, we have been persecuted specifically for being JEWS- not for practicing Judaism, for being JEWS, for being an ethnic minority- for fucking centuries.

Jews aren’t white. Antisemitism is racism. People debating about whether Anne Frank had “white privilege” during the fucking Holocaust are racist. End of story. Good night.

The most moderate, nuanced and productive people I have discussed the Israel-Hamas war with have been Jews, Israelis, and people with Palestinian family. Everyone directly affected by this just wants it to stop and to have peace and safety in the region in a way that minimises the casualty count.

The most extreme and performative and vile things I've been told are by people who have no connection to this and like to think they are experts because they have covered adjacent topics during learning, or read stuff online.

If all the randos in the west would just shut up for ten minutes and let those of us actually affected, with an understanding of the history of the land and the culture and the generational trauma experienced by Jews and Palestinians alike talk, we might actually have a chance to salvage this and stop it spiraling

With all of the Kanye west black Hebrew Israelite bullshit in the media, it’s important to remember that there are Black Jews. Being Black and Jewish does not make you affiliated with BHI in any way (BHI are in fact, not Jewish, and I would consider them an antisemitic hate group) Black Jews are no less Jewish than anyone else and they deserve to be in our spaces and be respected as Jews. a longer analysis needed maybe but I think we’re giving too much moral credit to white supremacists and white nationalists when we say thing like “it’s just a fight if they hate Jews or Muslims more.” They hate us both and in neither interchangeable nor neatly separable ways, just like how antisemitism and Islamophobia are neither interchangeable nor fully separable and deeply racialized ideologies that often get misunderstood as simply “religious.” What they’re actually doing is making strategic decisions about the political capital they can use. Can someone be radicalized in a given moment against Muslims, or against Jews? What is the best way to advance our movement? Can we push a broad platform of hatred towards jihadi terrorists who are going to invade western society, or get people worked up about the Zionist deep state globalists who control our government from within? What is the most effective way to radicalize someone into not only hatred but the idea entire ethnic and religious groups are at the root of all our social problems and that the nation - or the world - would be better without them? Do not assume innocence. And furthermore, do not assume you are safe from their schema of who the world would be better without, even if they aren’t saying your name, right now
