Naresh Goyal: Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal is currently in serious trouble in a fraud case of Rs 538 crore with Canara Bank. He became emotional during his appearance before the Special Court yesterday i.e. Saturday, January 6. The Enforcement Directorate has kept him in judicial custody in Arthur Road Jail.

Jet Airways (9W/JAI) | Years Active: 1992 - 2019 | Fleet Size: 124 | Operating Bases: Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) | Reason For Closure: Bankruptcy⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Founded in 1992, Jet Airways was granted scheduled airline status in early 1995, allowing it to operate scheduled flights for the first time.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In 2004 the airline was authorised to operate international services for the first time and opened up a route between Chennai and Colombo (Sri Lanka). The company’s first route to London Heathrow began in 2005 (using A340-300 aircraft subleased from South African Airways) when the Indian authorities allowed private airlines to operate to all countries apart from those in the Middle East.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In 2007 Jet opened a “scissor hub” at Brussels airport to allow passengers on it’s flights from India to transfer between aircraft at Brussels for onwards connections to North America (this hub was later transferred to Amsterdam Schiphol in 2016).  By 2010 the airline had become the largest commercial operator in India with a passenger market share of 22.6%.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ As the 2010s rolled on, the financial outlook of the airline began deteriorating, increased competition within the Indian aviation sector resulted in Jet cutting ticket prices to compete further impacting airline funds and reportedly leading to a quarter of leased aircraft being grounded due to the leases being unpaid. In April 2019 the Indian Oil Corporation stopped supplying fuel to the airline due to non-payment of bills which resulted in the airline suspending all flight operations as it’s demise was confimed.
