Jeanne Mance (November 12, 1606 – June 18, 1673) was a French nurse and settler of New France. She arrived in New France two years after the Ursuline nuns came to Quebec. Among the founders of Montreal in 1642, she established its first hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, in 1645. She returned twice to France to seek financial support for the hospital. After providing most of the care directly for years, in 1657 she recruited three sisters of the Religieuses hospitalières de Saint-Joseph, and continued to direct operations of the hospital. During her era, she was also known as Jehanne Mance contemporarily by the French, and as Joan Mance by the English contemporarily.

do you ever notice any montreal english in your speech?
sometimes!! my vocabulary is very montreal for sure, & i'm told my accent is as well. another thing i've noticed i do is anglicize the names of streets that have had french names officially since before i was born (st. lawrence vs st-laurent, park avenue vs avenue du parc, pine avenue vs avenue des pins) i have no idea how i started doing it since they are not the real names of those streets & haven't been at any point during my lifetime (& i'm fluently bilingual & very much aware of the real street names), but it seems to be a montreal anglo thing since most people in my english-speaking social circle do it as well (it's selective, not all street names get this treatment -- older people often pronounce some toponyms with more english diction than i do, like pronouncing "jeanne-mance" phonetically as if it's an english name, but i'd consider that a different thing). also i've noticed that non-quebec anglo canadians often say "mawntreal" and "kwebec" where i say "muntreal" and "kebek"

hi! hope you're well. i might be going to mtl solo for a few days in october and since you're a local i'm hoping you can suggest what i could do for fun... i've gone to the bagel shops and mt royal before and stuff lol other than that i like vintage/thrift/antique shopping, nature, music, and good coffee. merci beaucoup ~~
hiiii! for thrift i’d recommend going to one of the value villages or to renaissance, it’s usually best selection and not too busy if u go when it opens! renaissance has a bunch of locations so u can really go all out. if u want a bit more curated vintage u could check out annex vintage or empire exchange. i’d also recommend the botanical gardens! the indoor greenhouse is always really beautiful. ok also i’m obsessed w the orange julep lol u should go there and get hot dogs or poutine. for coffee maybe le cagibi or dispatch. and go to jarry/jeanne mance/laurier/lafontaine park and observe the squirrels, they will be getting nice and plump for winter.

“Girl "Husband" Will Spend Next 23 Months in Women's Jail,” Montreal Star. March 18, 1942. Page 3. ---- Antoinette Arsenault Dons Feminine Attire for Sentence. === ANTOINETTE ARSENAULT, 37, who dressed and posed as a man and worked at a munitions plant for two years, and "married" a 22-year-old New Brunswick girl, on February 14, will spend the next 23 months in the Women's Jail on Fullum street.
Her male attire and a small black "moustache" had disappeared when she was brought from the jail for sentence this morning before Judge Marin on the two charges to which she pleaded guilty on Saturday. The men's clothes and shoes had been replaced by a woman's. gray tailored suit, silk stockings - and high heeled shoes. Perched jauntily on her head was a blue beret.
SENTENCES CONCURRENT She was sentenced to 23 months in jail on each of the two charges, the terms to run concurrently."
She pleaded guilty under Article 468, Par. 1. of the Criminal Code to having falsified a "certified copy of part of a birth register," her birth certificate, on which she had signed her name as Andre-Pierre Arsenault. The second accusation was preferred under Article 480 of the Criminal Code, and charged that she was an accomplice before. the fact in falsifying a marriage register. She was accused of this second offence for having posed as a male at the "marriage," which took place at the French Baptist Church on Jeanne Mance street on February 14, with Rev. G. Chatot. officiating.
APPEARS IN CHAMBERS Although the girl's name appeared on the court lists for sentence before Judge Marin in one of the regular court rooms today, she was brought up secretly by way of the rear elevator from the garage under the Court House. She was taken directly to Judge Marin's chambers on the third floor at 9 a.m., one hour before the time scheduled for the opening of court.
She was returned to the garage in the same way and taken by automobile to the Fullum street Jail.
It was revealed today that she is a native of St. Celestin, near Three Rivers, and that even as a child, she preferred to play with boys rather than girls, and was called a "tomboy",

Montreal demonstrators go topless in fight for gender equality – Montreal
On a warm and sunny Sunday, Montrealers were taking in some rays at Jeanne Mance Park. Men were sunbathing topless and women were joining them. “I know that what we’re doing today is bothering a lot of people. and I say, good, good. Because at the end of the day, what we’re claiming is our rights to use our bodies the way that we want to,” said Alice Lacroix, the “Free the Titties”…
