“I bet you think Dragon Age 2 is the best writing games have to offer” is a sick burn I would type for a writer and then delete for being too mean.

Been reading the Broken Earth trilogy (ITS REALLY GOOD BTW YOU SHOULD READ IT), finished the second book last night, and something I found interesting was how the orogeny (earthquake magic for those who haven’t read) schools, the Fulcrum, is portrayed in books 1 and 2. There’s something about how Fulcrum teaching actually limits your range of orogeny, how self taught orogenes have abilities Fulcrum students never learn, and how the mindsets the Fulcrum instills actively prevent orogenes from conceptualizing their abilities in certain ways. A character even says at one point in The Obelisk Gate that she has no right to judge non-Fulcrum orogenes by Fulcrum standards as their tests are basically meaningless to someone who hasn’t spent time in the Fulcrum.
It’s a super interesting look and commentary on education, because of course the Fulcrum isn’t made to advance orogeny but is a tool of oppression against orogenes to ensure they fall in line and won’t cause trouble (the real world parallels are clear lol). No Fulcrum trained orogene is meant to be anything more than a slave, so shifting my perspective on it from ‘a horrific institution but without it orogenes have no chance to be able to control their powers’ to ‘a horrific institution that ensures orogenes will never learn what they’re really capable of’ was cool to feel real time. When your perception of the world is limited by the character’s POV and then you learn and discover along with them… that’s the good stuff.

February marked the 20th anniversary of Books and Bars. We had a great discussion of The City We Became by N.K. Jamisin.

Okay so I just read “The City we Became” by N.K. Jamisin and the premise is that some cities are alive and chose human avatars to embody them, and I just had the wild thought that Fox would be the embodiment of Coruscant. Just…he’d be aware of and protective of this entire city, and it’s just a particularly fascinating brand of bendy reality in that the avatars can sort of control the city but the city is also them, and I think it’d fit Fox very well.
Ohhh, that is a fascinating thought. I've read some urban fantasy stuff with that premise, but having it applied to SW....that's interesting.

2022 TBR
Maybe it’s a little bit early but here’s a list of all the books I’d like to read at some point in the year. Also this is just planned reading so I might end up reading some stuff that isn’t on here. (Note: outside of the immortal nicholas flamel series I don’t plan to immediately pick up the sequels to anything on this list unless I end up really really liking it which is why the first book is the only one listed)
• The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Series - Michael Scott (part reread part finishing the series)
• Dracula - Bram Stoker
• Don Quixote - Miguel De Cervantes
• Tender is the Flesh - Agustina Bazterrica
• Useless Magic - Florence Welch
• Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead - Olga Tokarczuk
• The Midnight Lie - Marie Rutkoski
• The Broken Wings - Khalil Gibran
• The City We Became - N.K. Jamisin
• Ghost Wood Song - Erica Waters
• The Deep - Rivers Solomon
• The Dictionary of Lost Words - Pip Williams
• The Final Revival of Opal & Nev - Dawnie Walton
• Magpie Murders - Anthony Horowitz
• A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles
• The Merciful Cow - Margaret Owen
• Mistress of the Art of Death - Ariana Franklin
• Madhouse at the End of the Earth - Julian Sancton
• A Ghost in the Throat - Doireann Ní Ghíofa
• Mocked with Death - Emily Wilson
• Violence and the Sacred - René Girard

The two faces on the cover of the album are a live version of the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge cover by Gerard Way; the art on the cover of Three Cheers is called Demolition Lovers II. There is also a version without blood and flipped on the inlay.
The models on the cover are Jaime Andrews and Jamisin Matthews.

I’m reading How Long til Black Future Month right now and oh my god NK Jamisin is brilliant. Short stories are always a hit or miss for me but there’s something in her stories that interest me every single time, she’s so amazing.

Well damn. Damn this third book is gonna hurt me like hellfire.
I can see why this trilogy won the Hugo for every book.
