Mystery/Thriller Monday

A Scottish car salesman in 1913. Set right as the world is right on the edge of World War I. Jack, the car salesman goes all over the world, and, he may or may not have quite the ear for languages. And so, as he travels, he also collects intelligence for the British Navy when he can. At first it’s just a little extra thing, but, then, there starts to be real consequences to his spying. Not to mention, he meets a woman who very very much complicates his life. He may even wind up having to choose between her and the work he’s doing for the government.

It was definitely a complex thriller, and, seeing a spy from the way back instead of something more modern was different and interesting as well. And, it’s the first book in a series too, so, woo to that!

However, I have placed them on the same side of the board, so there's a chance for them to tie if/when they do go up against each other "Where are Tangle and Whisper?" Already in the mobile games! So they can sit this one out "Who the heck are Ron/Gala/etc.?" To fill up a 32 character bracket I had to use some real obscure characters this time. It'd be funny if one of them won tho "Why are there so many Scrapniks?" Same reason as above. Trust me, there could've been more Scrapniks, but I stuck to the ones who performed better in the previous tournaments

Lucy was explaining the matching holiday sweatshirts that she, Tim and Tamara were wearing to Nyla, James and Jann when Angela snuck up to tap Tim’s arm.

Tim leans down next to her and says, “one sec, I love how she lights up when she explains how clever she is.”

Lucy points to a grinning Tamara who curtsies as Lucy says, “That one sent me a link from ClipTalk as a joke of these customizable holiday sweatshirts, so I got them for the entire family for our “favorite things” newsletter and photo. As you can see, Tim in his green sweatshirt has circles containing a rams helmet, a football, the dodgers logo, Tam, Kojo and me. That’s my hand in an I-L-Y on his heart. (Tim stood up a little straighter as people turned to inspect his shirt); Tamara’s white sweatshirt is covered in pics of Kojo, me, Officer Zaddy (Tim), books, and Austin; my red sweatshirt has Tim, Kojo,Tamara, Nevin’s chai latte, Jack, jackson and on my heart is Tim’s hand in the same ILY hand signal. We had to also get one for Kojo - so his hoodie has pics of all of us on it. The sweatshirts are double lined so they are perfect for this cold snap we are having.”

Tim turned to Angela and whispered, “She hasn’t yet found the circle that I had added that says, “will you marry me?” on it. So who knows when the engagement will happen. Thank you by the way for helping me with the ring.”

Angela wraps her arm around Tim and squeezes -she loves how happy both he and Lucy are. But that’s not why she’s here.

Quickly remembering, Angela turns to Tim and says, “Tim - We have a CODE: ORANGE happening on the back deck.”

Tim is on instant alert and the group stops laughing to focus on Angela. Tim turns to her and asks, “Sleazy Santa or Rabid Reindeer?”

Angela says, “Rabid Reindeer - you and Wesley are going to approach him while I get my abuela out of there. She’s 85 Tim, her heart cannot handle this.”

As Tim and Angela quickly weave through the families in Patrice’s living room towards the back deck, Lucy and Nyla look at each other in complete confusion. “Should we go after them?”

Jann takes that moment to chime in and say, “No, sadly this is not our first Rabid Reindeer alert. Dammit, give the man a inch and he takes a yard. Angela must have finally taken him off of double-secret probation and invited him to the party. We call him Rabid Reindeer because he gets drunk on Rumplemintz Schnaps and french kisses any female over 50 - by standing with a decrepit bit of mistletoe on a headbad which hangs over the person in front of him. You think he’s going to hug you, but then he just lays one on you instead.”

Jann added, “He got banned from the party 5 years ago after kissing Angela’s mom - who promptly hit him over the head with her purse after dumping the still warm hot toddies all over him.

Smitty and Mistletoe should never be in the same room together.”

Spoiler-y review of Before We Disappear by Shaun David Hutchinson

Summary (pulled from goodreads) :

The Prestige meets What If It’s Us in Before We Disappear, a queer ahistorical fantasy set during the 1909 Seattle Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition, where the two assistants of two ambitious magicians find themselves falling in love amidst a bitter rivalry designed to tear them apart.

Jack Nevin’s clever trickery and moral flexibility have served him well his entire life—making him the perfect assistant to the Enchantress, one of the most well-known stage magicians in early-twentieth-century Europe. Without Jack’s steady supply of stolen tricks and copycat sleight-of-hand illusions, the Enchantress’s fame would have burned out long ago—not that she would ever admit it.

But when they’re forced to flee the continent for America, the Enchantress finds a new audience in Seattle at the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific World’s Fair Exposition. She and Jack are set to make a fortune until a new magician arrives on the scene. Performing tricks that defy the imagination, Laszlo’s act threatens to overshadow the Enchantress and co-opt her audience. Jack has no choice but to hunt for the secrets behind Laszlo’s otherworldly illusions—but what he uncovers isn’t at all what he expected.

What makes Laszlo’s tricks possible is, unbelievably, a boy that can seemingly perform real magic. Wilhelm’s abilities defy all the laws of physics. His talents are no clever sleights-of-hand. As the rivalry between the Enchantress and Laszlo grows increasingly dangerous and dire, Jack finds he has to choose between the woman who gave him a life and the boy who is offering him love. It's a new star-crossed romance about the magic of first love from acclaimed author Shaun David Hutchinson.

Review:

This was an incredible adventure to read. Looking at the cover and thinking it was teen or at least YA, I was unprepared for how dark it got. Our main characters are both living in abusive relationships. The theme of abuse is a strong one and is quite heavy. I think it did a good job of showing different types of abuse and the victims' reactions to it.

There was also a theme of found family and figuring out what you want in your future, freedom, and finding a home in the person you love. Both our characters go through great arcs where they learn and grow. Watching them connect, protect, love, and understand each other was delightful with an undercurrent of unease because they are unsafe and in danger.

Honestly I didn't think it would end in anything but tragedy but I was glad to be wrong. Given how heavy and tense the story was, the ending went smoothly without any problems which I feel like was an opportunity missed. With a story like this, I think the last act should have also been tense, messy, and scary. But I guess given how much hell our characters went through, they at least deserved an easy end.

I spent the entire book terrified of them getting caught or getting hurt or any other horrible things and so I think it was expertly written. I felt all the emotions of the characters and thats why I was so on edge most of the time. It was super easy to just fly through the book, I think I read it in 2 sittings. The author is great at evoking emotion in readers which was true with this book and his other book I previously reviewed, We Are The Ants.

What I loved was that the concept of homophobia was completely taken out. Our main characters are 2 gay men and our side characters are 2 sapphic women, both who get together romantically. The author makes a note of it in the end acknowledgement that it's a fantasy because homophobia existed in real life of course but a fantasy gave him full control to get rid of it in his story. What was not gotten rid of was the period typical racism and sexism but I guess nothing can be perfect, humans and their bigotry will remain no matter what. Racism and sexism also played a role in the story so there was that as well.

The villains of the story were interesting. One was terrifying and the other charming and enchanting. Teddy, the terrifying one, was physically abusive and a monster, and there was no humanity in him. In that regard maybe he was a bit stereotypical and one dimensional but I know monsters like him exist. My only issue was a line towards the end that tried to humanize him by saying he was someone who's bad decisions made him a monster and implying he may have been good before but not once do we see him do one good or even a neutral deed so that line kinda fell flat.

The enchanting one, appropriately named The Enchantress, was emotionally abusive, narcissistic, and manipulative. Yet she had more to her character than Teddy. She felt real. There was a complexness to her. We do see her do some good and very much bad and it makes her a believable character and a great villain. I was less afraid of her than Teddy even though her cunning would definitely make her more dangerous, since you would never see her coming. Teddy was dumb but physically dangerous. When the novel starts, we are told that The Enchantress captivates everyone and easily makes them like her and I found that to be (annoyingly) true. You can't help but like her or be charmed by her even though you see how much of a horrible person she is. To me, she was the most interesting and the most complex character in the novel.

Overall I think I loved this novel more than We Are The Ants.

Not a Book Friday

Three movies, and then three seasons of TV. All quite... unique... in a very Australian way. He's a former lawyer whose wife was killed and that sent him into a spiral. And now he makes money in.. interesting ways, sorta is a PI, and, when a former client of his dies (a client that he had during the hard days after his wife's death) he's on the case because he doesn't believe the official story that the police are spouting. He finds the help of Linda Hilliard too, a journalist who doesn't seem phased by... well, any of the parts of him. Played amazingly by Marta Dusseldorp (yep, that's why I decided to watch it, but, I continued to watch it because the movies were amazing and I can't wait to start the TV series too!)

The 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship presented by Barbasol will take place at Nevin Park in Charlotte, North Carolina, October 13th-16th.

“The DGPT fits right into our strategy of targeting active people on the go,” said Barbasol VP of Marketing, Tim McNamara. “Disc golf’s explosive growth and broad participation makes it an attractive partnership where we can connect with this passionate fan base.”

In addition to the partnership with Barbasol, the DGPT is pleased to announce that this year’s Tour Championship will award the largest purse in disc golf history. A total purse of just over $300,000 will be split among thirty-two men and sixteen women, with equal payouts of $35,000 going to both the FPO & MPO champions.

The Tour Championship will feature a play-in event to determine the final player pool followed by four rounds of competition, with top players earning byes to the quarterfinals or semifinals based on season-long points totals. Players must finish in the top four daily scores to make it to the next round. All the action will stream live on the Disc Golf Network. Spectating tickets are also available for purchase.
