By pleasing everyone else, we hope to prove our worth. However, this inevitably involves covering up our true feelings, which is, once again, self-defeating.

Withdrawal By withdrawing from the real world, we can essentially numb ourselves to the feelings of guilt and shame so that we are no longer upset by these sorts of things. Again, nothing has been done to address the core issues of the problem.

While each of these actions may provide temporary relief, the long-term effects are often negative, and the result is the passing on of guilt or shame to others.

The Role of Guilt and Shame in Conflict

As illustrated previously, guilt and shame can play important role in both the creation and alleviation of conflict. In particular, shame can be an important factor in the development of conflicts. The nature of shame and the resulting tendencies to withdraw and lash out defensively can lead to escalation of an already tense situation. This can result in a cycle of conflict; as one party lashes out at the other, both sides view themselves less positively, increasing shame all around. This in turn results in continued aggressive behaviour. Take, for instance, a situation of ethnic conflict; particularly where the members of one side have been treated like lesser human beings because of their ethnic identity. The resulting shame over who they are leads to retaliatory behaviour and aggressive actions. In a situation of divorce where one or both parties have been shamed for various reasons, the resulting responses can only enhance the negative aspects of what is already an unpleasant experience.

Although shame often leads to negative behaviour, guilt can cause positive and constructive changes in the way people act. Martin Luther King mobilised the white’s guilt, when they made clear the discrepancy between white American’s deep-rooted beliefs in freedom and equality and the way African Americans were treated in this country. Once the collective guilt became strong enough, racial segregation became illegal in the United States and remedies, such as affirmative action, were implemented to try to make amends.

Using guilt as an influence tool can be very helpful, but must be used with caution. Guilt can be used to influence people to do both good and bad - positive and negative. As with any tool, it is important that it is used appropriately and responsibly. Guilt is also useful in preventing conflict in the first place. We all have a moral code, or an idea of what we think is right and wrong. Whenever we consider doing something in contrast with this moral code, our guilt will often kick in and prevent us from doing so before we ever act. We treat people in accordance with our moral codes because we don’t want to feel guilty.

However, in order for guilt to play a role in conflict resolution and prevention, an individual must view certain acts as important. In other words, in order for guilt to prevent conflict - inducing behaviour, people must view their behaviour as wrong and as significant. For example, a person who drives 65 km per hour in a 50 km per hour zone will only feel guilty about it if they view speeding as an important action. The same is true of ethnic conflict or marital relations. In order to prevent ethnic cleansing, people must view that action as important to avoid. Otherwise, guilt will not be an important factor.

What Individuals can do?

Both guilt and shame are important social factors. As such, both are intrinsically tied to social situations. Our ideas about guilt and shame (what is right and wrong) came from social situations - education, family, work, etc. As a result, it is important that educators, parents, friends, and family work to make sure that those around them (particularly children) have a sense of self-worth. By showing people empathy and caring, we indicate that doing something wrong does not necessarily reflect on the person as a whole. By differentiating between the action and the actor, we can help prevent shame and its negative connotations, while still encouraging a healthy sense of right, wrong, and guilt when necessary.

The May Yod

Two possible outcomes of the May Yod

Squares are just challenges, oppositions are just radical change, even trines do nothing more then accelerate our destiny. Conjunctions bring these things to a head, a war inside ourselves to find the best path forward. One astrological configuration that we don't often talk about is the Yod. Named by the ancients as the "finger of god", the Yod is our final warning before the crisis. A classical interpretation is the idea of pent-up forces being let loose, like the stretched bow releasing its arrow. Many astrologers call the Yod a "runaway train"

A Positive Outcome

Faith by itself only creates martyrs. A Yod sometimes foretells of such a misplaced belief system, with onerous results for those with power, and those without it. The problem lies with what we believe, what we think of as fact, depending on our prior prejudices. A Yod can bring to a head the consequences of fake news, fake prices, fake crisis, and fake leadership.

Such a Yod is upcoming in early May. It amounts to a reassessment of Jupiter's power of growth and abundance. We want an endless cornucopia of plenty, but this is delusional. We look to Jupiter for luck--but even our shield against mayhem can't insure continuous positive affirmation. Bad luck always lurks in the underbelly of over-confidence.

Even beyond luck, Jupiter wants justice. This is even more true when Jupiter is in Virgo, where it becomes justice for the masses. We see that in the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, the women's movement, the resistance to tyranny all around the world, justice is the key word, even beyond personal enrichment. People are more important than profits. We must have an end to corruption and fraud. Our modern societies are supposedly built on the rule of law, and "justice for all", and yet we see the legal system completely perverted by political influence and the police transformed into an occupying army in our communities. The hypocrisy of American justice being so undermined will feature strongly during and after the May Yod, either by its own excesses and failures, or by the revelation of its perfidy.

The May Yod, shown below in red in the chart for May 3, combines the forces of the Sun in Aries and Neptune in Aquarius to send an already back-tracking Jupiter in Virgo into full retreat and a painful period that recognizes its own flaws and limitations. Every increase in consciousness stops and starts, as new concepts are tested and digested. Jupiter is trying to expand the humanitarian side of Virgo, its fairness doctrine and love of the underdog. What is holding it back is an array of destruction and addiction.

A stubborn and rash Aries Sun combines with Neptune the seducer, to throw Jupiter, our great protector, into introspection and self-criticism. This is a situation where conflict and scandals are inevitable. The loss of Jupiter's confidence, combined with a Mercury retrograde episode from late March to late May, just makes matters worse.

Changes are stalled, the enemy is encouraged by the lapse, as mindful people work on the details of how and where to bring about a more just society. The rest of society, caught between revolutionary change and savage oppression become stupefied and crawl back into their addictions and apathy to give themselves temporary comfort.

This may foretell a summer of anger and disappointment, leading to violence in the streets, and a humbling experience for those in power; a breakdown in the accepted social and political norms; confusion, delusion and seclusion. We will have to rethink and re-design the social contract between government and the people, and the media will try to prevent it and redirect it to war.

Some co-ordinated action is called for in the struggle against a system that has failed, but this may not be possible until May 20. We want solutions now, but there are none to be had, at least in our present state of mind, where the heart rules the head, and which is forcing us back into our old insecurities and fantasies. Perhaps during this period, we will see the birth of a new type of leadership, both militant and egalitarian, capable of meeting our vision of a better world, and helping is to create it. However fraught with peril, this is a possible positive effect of the Yod, if we are listening. Listen we should, but we must absorb it fully to be able to act. This would be dangerous until after May 20, when what we do will stick, and not be dissolved in fear. Until then, we should contain our impatience and be attentive for arrival of the new wave of leadership, and become part of it, ourselves.

On a personal level, an optimistic view of the May Yod would be that we could find our voice after years of stupor. The tyrant is especially weak, Saturn goes into retrograde April 6, and the Yod underscores that. The Sun can also use force and bullying to bolster itself to uphold the status quo. Any wishy-washy, political indifference to a dictatorship can be used against us. We have to find our allies and those on whom we can depend. Our notions of government are being broadsided by new concepts of activism and political militancy. It's the profligacy and incompetence of the top 1% as well as our own past failures that are bringing about a crisis. Sun-Jupiter in this Yod combination is mad with power, and has no morality. It will force us to confront it by developing new philosophies and ideologies. Donald Trump corrupt administration, his Neanderthal ideas, are just a manifestation of a stubborn and heartless political trend among the rich and powerful. Trump and the rest of the bourgeoisie can only become mired in contention, disunity and disgrace as their own unity is threatened as well by the present situation. The Yod can be aimed at foolish leaders, as a talisman of their doom. Neptune will dissolve their confidence and stock of self-enhancements, and erode away whatever is founded on fantasy and boosterism. The rich have built their castles on sand, as well as everyone else.

May's Yod will undermine just such a type of leadership that Trump has metastasized, the self-righteous but brain-dead seducer, in spectacular failure, as reflected in his plunging approval ratings. Trump's Moon in Ophiuchus enabled him to cast a spell on millions of people; maybe the Yod is a prediction that his powers will evaporate, leaving him naked and ridiculous, like the emperor with no clothes.

If we see this Yod as a warning to Trump that his ridiculous vision for America is a lie, the one thing we can be sure of is that he will not heed its message, and will push ahead full bore, as if his power is unchecked by reality. His Taurus bull-headedness won't be stopped by any small feat, and he will just keep coming until he is defeated or we are. However, as many despots have discovered, once the mask of invincibility is stripped away, there is nothing that can be done to escape the consequences of tyranny and incompetence.

The best-case-scenario is that what happens to Trump will spread out with him as the first domino and could accelerate the process of the mass consciousness as people organize against him.

Unfortunately, this may take more time than we have. Mistakes made now will reverberate for years to come, and may require more effort than we are capable of in the moment. The Yod only spells it out for us, how long it takes to digest the message lies with us. This brings us to a second scenario, which is much less sanguine.

A Negative Outcome

A much darker outcome of the May Yod may mean we retreat deeper into our delusions. We become as immune to the facts as Trump himself is. We won't believe the truth, no matter how it slaps us in the face. We will deceive ourselves by obscuring our true interests, and shroud our illusions with false hope.

The powerful, militaristic Aries Sun can combine with weak, aloof Neptune to prevent Jupiter from protecting us from our own foolish illusions. Instead, we revert to our secret addictions as the only way out for us. We can be addicted to racism, sexism and nationalism like drugs that give us a momentary high, and are drawn from our secret well of fear and hate.

Such an outcome would mean the election in France of Marine LePen, a myopic, Trump-like candidate whose appeal to the bitterness and disappointment in the French electorate will enable a right-wing, proto-fascist government to take power there, with catastrophic results. In the vacuum of French politics, the Left and the centerist politicians are divided and dissipated, wallowing in their own corruption and mutual log-rolling--a classic sign of Neptune eating away at our freedom and humanitarianism. Even the Left-socialists and the Communist party have been driven into a mist of confusion, seeking to pander to the selfishness and ignorance of the voters, giving up the basic ideal of the worldwide unity of workers. A Trump-like outcome in France would mean another stepping stone to war and/or rebellion, raising the stakes by taking back hard-fought, already won concessions that previous governments have made to workers.

The election of LePen, like Trump's ascent to power, may signal a disgust in France with politics-as-usual, but, like Trump, it would be a very, very poor choice both for France and the world. There seems to be no viable alternative than to drive our heads deeper in the dirt. Like Trump, LePen offers no solutions to the economic or social problems, she merely reveals the disunity and dissipation of the Left and the collapse of the social contract.

The only alternative to LePen, as was the case with Hillary Clinton versus Trump in our election, is a continuation of the corruption and banality of present policies, and a further collapse of the standard of living for millions of French people.

Any election is significant in France, because of its long-standing commitment to workers, unions, and egalitarianism. The election of LePen will mock whatever remains of the famous revolutionary ideal of "Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood" that sparked the French revolution and has been at the heart of French politics ever since.

Evidence-based Thinking

There are three very robust research findings that should have a profound impact on how we educate our children:

· Children as young as three to five months demonstrate a sense of right and wrong.

· They also demonstrate unease with people who are unfamiliar.

· People strive to maintain a positive self-image of and reject messages that contradict that image.

We do not have to teach students right from wrong. Children come to school with an inner sense of right and wrong. They have a conscience: an inner voice that can guide them to discern right from wrong. This inner voice can guide them to do what is right and avoid doing wrong. Like any other aspect of human development, that innate sense of right and wrong needs to be in an environment, where it is nurtured and cared for so it can grow and mature, where that inner voice can be heard and not drowned out by other noises.

This voice being drowned out is where the second research finding comes into play: fear is a loud sound that cancels everything else going in our hearts and minds. Think of walking down the street and observing what is around you and thinking about something. All of a sudden and siren cries and you automatically turn all of your attention towards it. This is an adaptive behavior because we need to sometimes act without thinking in order to protect ourselves. In addition, many unfamiliar people and/or events seem to hold a greater potential for harm than familiar ones. Fear puts our conscience on hold.

In most cases, once the alert is over and we discover we are not at risk, we pick up where we left off. We hopefully store that experience as a reference to interpret future events.

Here is how the interplay of these two research findings can interact. A young child meets a stranger who might look considerably different from most other people that the child has met. The child might freeze and/or stare at that person focusing on the unfamiliarity or the aspect of the person that is different. Usually if a trusted caretaker interacts with that stranger in a friendly manner, the child receives the message that the person is really not that much different and can be trusted because they see someone, they trust, interacting with that unfamiliar person. This is how the unfamiliar becomes familiar we see how our fear is unfounded. Since this person is not a threat, therefore the person must be treated the right way. The caretaker has taught the child (helped the child discern) that their sense of right and wrong should be applied to this person.

Just because people, children included, have a conscience doesn't mean that they will always follow it, i.e. consistently chose to do what is right. Learning to interpret the world, the people in it is part of the process of moral development. Doing what something wrong is not an indication that the child doesn't know right from wrong; it is just an indication that the child hasn't correctly assessed the situation. Fear has drowned out their inner voice. This is where the third research finding comes into play.

If a child who does something wrong is judged by the person in authority as not knowing right from wrong that child will have great difficulty accepting what that person has to teach him or her, because their positive self-image is negated. This is especially true when the person in authority decides that in order to learn right from wrong the child needs to be punished or be made to feel bad about one's self. Punishment is designed to create such a negative experience that the child will decide that he/she will do right in the future as a way to avoid that punishment. This is essentially conveying to the child that he/she does not have a conscience or an inner guide to what is right or wrong. Right or wrong therefore is externally determined or controlled by those who have more authority or power. In this situation, many children accept the identity imposed on them as not having a conscience and become dependent upon external forces for helping them discern right from wrong.

Typically children who grow up in environments that consistently give them the identity that they don't have a conscience i.e. they must determine right from wrong from the consequences that those in authority impose upon them, have two basic choices: accept that identity and live to please those in authority or reject that identity and live in opposition to those in authority. In both scenarios those children learn not to listen to their conscience and as a result make a lot of choices that are externally determined. When they confront situations where rules aren't explicit and when those in power are not presence, how they choose to act is anybody's guess. In most cases their behaviors reflect their own interests not what might be best for others. This explains why people who can commit the most heinous acts deny doing so. Because if they did, they would be admitting that they are bad people-and that is almost impossible for any person to do.

This can all be complicated and does in real life, but let's try to play out a positive scenario. Let's supposed our innate sense of right or wrong, our conscience, was embedded in us in order to make sure we respected the inherent dignity of every individual person we met-without exception. The key word is inherent. Dignity is not something a person should earn-it should be a given.

(A person who is viewed not having inherent dignity is essentially considered to be less human or in some cases not human, with these people our sense of right or wrong doesn't apply. Our moral behavior becomes conditional: I will do what is right towards those who have met my standards of behavior, i.e. earned the right of being treated with respect. I will do right towards those people who like me, who are similar to me and have met my criteria. This exempts me from treating them with respect and allows me to harm them if necessary. This type of thinking however can get so twisted: I will mistreat a person in order for that person to learn to meet my criteria for respect-that person needs to earn dignity so it is my responsibility to do whatever is necessary to do so.)

When a child does something bad or hurtful to another, it not because they don't know right from wrong, it is because they have forgotten to the inherent dignity of the other person. That child has focused on the person's difference and failed to recognize how they are similar to them. It is the role of an adult, to teach them otherwise. To be effective that adult must first affirm the child and affirm his/her's conscience. Once that message is conveyed then the student is more likely to accept the adult's lesson: helping them discern or understand how the person they wronged doesn't have to earn respect, but has inherent dignity in the same way that he/she has it.

This is how the golden rule can play itself out in life, because in order for the rule to work, all people must be afforded their inherent dignity. The golden rule under those conditions cannot have exceptions; it doesn't work if it is conditional: treat others (those who meet your criteria for respect) the way you want to be treated. When an adult affirms a child inherent dignity (acknowledges that the child has a conscience) that child is able to accept the feedback that his/her words and/or actions reflected errors of judgment, or not understanding the situation, or of acting without thinking, and not as a judgment of who he/she is as person. When a child or person is held accountable for their actions in a respectful way, they can view what they did as an aberration and they can correct their thinking, i.e. use their mistake as part of the learning process. This is how the conscience can grow and improve its ability to discern-it can speak louder and rise above background noise becoming a better guide for future behavior.

There are four key fundamental ways to apply the three research findings in schools:

Authority must come from shared values and beliefs not from positions of power. A person's behavior needs to change not because someone in power says so but because that behavior conflicts or violates the core values of the community. The community must develop these values and beliefs. They need to be clearly articulated, made visible, and talked about on an ongoing basis. Every member of the community ultimately must assume responsibility for helping all individuals align their words and actions with those values and beliefs. This is the optimal type of environment for students' moral consciences to grow and mature.

Adults must constantly strive to treat all people with respect regardless of their behavior. They must learn to hold students or other staff accountable in a way that recognizes and affirms that person's dignity. Their words and actions must reflect the assumption that all people have a sense of right and wrong even if they do wrong.

Of course this can be difficult to do, so if an adult makes a mistake and fails to act respectfully, he/she must admit that mistake and apologize to whomever was wronged especially to students who have less power and authority. Accountability when it is accompanied with respect works up and down: those with more power are accountable to those with less. If an adult has difficulty treating others with respect without exception then that person should learn the skill of doing so or be reassigned to a position where they are less likely to encounter students misbehaving (this positions are hard to find in schools.) There can never be an excuse for disrespect or there should be no exceptions to the golden rule.

Change for anyone's behavior should be based on remorse never shame. To paraphrase Mister Rogers: good people sometimes do bad things. People who make mistakes or do wrong should never be made to feel bad about themselves as people. They do however need to see and understand how what they did negatively affected others. They must be given opportunities to reflect on their words and actions, apologize if necessary and act to make amends. They should if possible help decide on what they can do to repair the harm they might have caused. They should also be guided and coached on what they can do differently in the future should they confront similar problems of situations.

Invest time and energy in helping members of the school community discover what they have in common and embrace their differences. It is easy to misjudge another person especially the more different we think that person is. Since people tend to focus on differences, educators must be intentional in helping students discover commonalities with others. Students, who think they have something in common with their teachers, learn more from them. Students who find commonalities with other students tend to automatically treat them with respect. Educators who make that investment will find that such activities pay great dividends over time by preventing a lot of inappropriate behavior.

In summary the three research findings that I shared are manifested in many popular initiatives in school. These so-called evidenced based programs are designed to address many school problems that ironically are a product of the basic design of our schools. This design was based on many negative assumptions about students and teaching and learning: students need to be taught right from wrong and students needed to be controlled in order to learn. These evidenced based programs though well-intended often flare up for a short while in schools with little impact because of the basic culture of schools chews them up and spits them out.

Maybe a better approach would be to put these programs aside for a while and instead invest in evidence-based thinking and discussion among the staff. The research findings are should be hard to ignore and they can be the basis for prolonged reflection and discussion for how people treat each other in the school environment. This is best way meaningful change that can sustain itself.
