i love that the toymaker, this elemental force of chaos, this incomprehensible being from beyond our universe, decided to be racist. because that has to have been an intentional decision. it's not like he would actually care. he chose to do that, he deliberately put on bad accents and made gross remarks, because to him, that's just another game. a game he can very easily win by ... just being white. it's one of the most asymmetrical games ever, a game he can always win. for the toymaker, it's literally just a power play.

one of the lesser talked about fun things about intentionally reading more books is finding new stuff to be a bit of a hater about tbh
#and i know sometimes im probably just not properly picking up whatever the writer is putting down but whatever it's still fun#to actually know what you think about stuff like the highly regarded classics and extremely popular hyped up things#here are a few writers im a bit of a hater about w my opinions now btw#neil gaiman: does not do it for me at alllll#have read the graveyard book and american gods and hated almost every minute of both#in american gods i just found the aesthetic ideas and characters completely unappealing and in the graveyard book#i thought it was dreary and not well described enough... kept feeling like it was too bare bones in some way to picture things properly#i was like 'hmm i wish this was one of his graphic novels instead bc i'd like to be able to see what's going on here a bit better...'#also his humour just never lands for me and i do not often get his references either#ray bradbury annoys me in a similar way to neil gaiman but also somewhat oppositely like where#the way they write characters and plots and ideas and the stuff they care about gets on my nerves in an almost identical way#that i don't know how to define except to say i had a bit of a 'same energy' experience reading Something Wicked This Way Comes#and some of neil gaiman's stuff#but unlike neil gaiman i think that ray bradbury attempts to describe things unusually so much and TOO much#to the point that it takes me out of the story in a different yet similar way#to how the lack of description in neil gaiman's stuff does#what else have i become a bit of a hater about or did not get the appeal of lately? hmmm#oh hp lovecraft hahahaha#least scary stories ever god everything he's scared of is so dumb#like even aside from his extremely racist takes and fear of the 'exotic other' his fears about being cosmically insignificant are just like#yeah and? whats so scary about that hahaha i literally just dont get it#also the amount he writes dialogue in heavy accents annoys the shit out of me#p

Y’know, living in Scotland and hearing the name Craig being said one way for basically my whole life and then watching South Park and hearing it be said a completely different way is SO bizarre. We say it like Kr-ay-g, as it’s the way it should be pronounced, but the show says Cr-e-g which always throws me. Different countries, different pronunciations of course, but it’s still so bizarre

#song of the day#another song off that same excellent concept playlist by losersimonriley#there's so many more Scottish bands added to my circulation now it's wonderful#this is a song specifically about Glasgow being his hometown so he uses more of his accent for it which I love#I've been pestering my brothers with accent and slang fun facts for a while now#more or less since the first time somebody had Soap use a particular Scottish saying in their CoD fic and made me go over all !!!!#'innsidh na geòidh as t'fhoghar e' translates to 'the geese will tell it in autumn' and reading that nearly made me explode#because when I was a small child and I asked my uncle too many 'why' questions he told me not to worry about it#that the geese would tell me next fall#amazing to me to find out decades later through Call of Duty fanfiction that that's an actual phrase#preserved for who knows how many generations between the first Scottish folks who must've brought it to Appalachia#and then eventually my Uncle Tommy who decided to use it to turn the aggravation tables around on a child#I'm thinking about that again now not just because it still blows my mind a little bit#(really truly had so firmly accepted it as just my Uncle Tommy trolling me with nonsense. it's such a thing he'd do)#but also because of a specific bit from the end of the song 'it's thirteen degrees and there's folk in the street in the scud'#that's just under 60F (a blissfully warm sunny day in Glasgow it seems) and 'in the scud' means 'naked'#which is also a thing I've almost heard from my family!#my aunts up the mountain and therefore also my father at times would say 'in the scuff' (my aunts with a little tilt to the vowel sound)#there was a sort of connotation of it being a silly or immature or maybe drunken sort of naked. an unimpressive naked at least#like 'Tommy fell into the muddy end of the pond trying to catch that damnfool heron' (this is a true story btw. take that Uncle Tommy)#'when he got back his wife made him take off all his clothin in the yard and hose down first. had to walk into his house in th scuff'#and then all the old ladies cackle about Tommy walkin through his door 'both heads hangin low' and my dad winces a little bit#it's important I share all these memories with my siblings now. most of the family's dead and gone and the boys don't remember#very fun for me to tell the stories now and see Nick do the exact same wince at the slightly mean-spirited dick commentary#just a little family legacy in action. thank you Gerry Cinnamon#(in the spirit of song-of-the-day though I will share my favorite line without the contextual boost of silly ereborne family stories:#'I know a guy who's a lightweight / one or two jars and he's buckled#he's the guy that loses keys / has to break into his ain house and gets huckled'#ungodly fun to sing and I do know several of this guy. not related to them though. my whole family drinks like fish)

life can be so easy sometimes. woag
#i ordered a pair of prescription transition glasses online at a great price & i love them sooo much but forgot they'd need adjusting#i just told my manager hey do you mind if i leave a little early today & she was just like yeah no worries#so i walked over to the local opticians & the woman there was so sweet. did the adjustment & was also like#'hey do you want a smaller nose pad? i think it would be more comfortable for you' so she went ahead & did that#whilst explaining to me how the process works bc i've always been genuinely curious how they adjust them. i learned they use a heat machine#to be able to adjust the temples :) also different glasses have different max heat points so you always have to be careful#then she showed me all the tools to switch out the pads which looked very fun. like tiny lego kind of fun#also she asked me abt my accent & i just told her 'no exciting story unfortunately. i'm autistic so i tend to pick up accents#but next time i'll make one up for you' to which she replied with the funniest story abt how her husband who was born without#anything past his right elbow loooooves to do that. make up stories abt how it got frozen off on a trip to the north that went bad or#bitten off by a shark or donated to someone else or to science. & she says all this with so much fond exasperation it was v funny & v sweet#7
