It’s weird beyond all literal hell, its form makes no sense in any sense and its size is literally on a cosmic scale. Now contrast to the D-Man;

Superficially, it’s kind of just a guy in a suit. A very outwardly creepy guy in a suit, but a guy in a suit, nonetheless. Yet as Mark has explicitly described him/them as a “weird interdimensional person that seems human but is obviously not” “doesn’t obey the laws of physics” and demonstrated these traits in his/their appearances Dark absolutely qualifies as an eldritch horror. And I’d argue that this characteristic of Dark only makes them/him even more of an unsettling mindfuck of a character than traditional Lovecraftian monstrosities.

Because even though the truly alien geometries of traditional eldritch horrors do inspire a feeling of a sense of smallness against the unfathomable forces of the cosmos, the irony is that because they’ve been featured in over a centuries worth of stories this traditional form has become a trope and therefore in an odd way familiar; the antithesis of cosmic horror’s goal to destabilize your sense of reality in a terrifying way.

Dark’s brilliance as a character then lies in being an entity whose eldritch nature not only fucks with our concept of natural law (time & space, life & death) but also fundamentally fucks with our notions of Lovecraftian horror itself. Like his/their buddy Wilford, Dark is a character that refuses to follow the script and comply with genre conventions (he/they have a tendency to disrupt and/or take over videos where eldtritch abominations don’t traditionally belong). And when the only sources of comfort/familiarity with a creature like Dark are the genre signposts of a disgusting and alien appearance; the human form and suave personality only makes the Lovecraftian dread worse.

And not only does it make Dark more existentially terrifying it also makes him/them all the more intriguing as a character. Other eldritch abominations you sort of tend to mentally assign into “will never understand, won’t even attempt to try” file in your brain because that’s what their appearance tells you and what the genre reinforces. But Dark? This creature that exists outside our notions of reality but still has an identifiable backstory, human appearance and sinister charm? To me that’s utterly fascinating. You want to understand him/them, figure him/them out, all the while aware that you probably never will but you persist anyway.

To close this (probably too long and rambling) post up, I think some major megaton PREESHES are in order to @markiplier for realizing and bringing to life such a great and fundamentally creative character. And I’m crossing every possible appendage and praying to every possible god we get to see more of him them/him in the near future (Oct 30th, WINK WONK).
