The French Consulate in Istanbul Censored a Turkish Graffiti Artist's Work on Gaza, Forever Palestine 🇵🇸, at a Street Art Exhibition Organized by the French Cultural Center, Which Led to the Cancellation of the Event as Other Artists Pulled Their Artwork in Solidarity.
Graffiti Artist Muhammed Emin Turkmen, known as MET, received an invitation from the French Cultural Center to participate in the "Olympic Games" themed street art exhibition several months ago. He combined the themes of Gaza and the Olympics in his work, a concept he discussed with the centre well in advance.
Initially, the centre supported Turkmen's theme, provided it contained no offensive elements. However, two days before the opening, Turkmen was informed that his work wouldn't be displayed due to the consulate's decision.
Despite efforts to find a solution, the consulate's stance remained firm. Turkmen decided to withdraw, stating,
"If I can't use my art to draw attention to the suffering in Palestine, then there's no point in me being part of the exhibition." Other artists and the curator also withdrew in solidarity, leading to the exhibition's cancellation.
The French Cultural Center announced the cancellation of the exhibition, scheduled for May 18, via email to invitees but did not publicly disclose the reason.
Turkmen's censored work imagined how the Olympics would look if held in Palestine, highlighting the stark contrast and the loss of thousands of children. Despite the censorship, Turkmen vowed to continue using his art to voice the plight of Palestinians.
