CAME OUT WHEN I DID I've never felt much pull for nostalgia – the pitiful refuge of tired folks who find no comfort in now. But I'm fascinated by things that are vintage 1987, though I was too young to know them at the time. Two of my favourite movies released that year, quiet and personal dramas that heavily influenced my photography. "Matewan" and "Ironweed", ragged tales of coal miners and homeless people, set in the 1920s and 30s respectively. They came out when I did. Tom Waits recorded his "Frank's Wild Years" album in '87, with songs like "Hang on St. Christopher" and "Way Down in the Hole" that sound warm and well-worn like they'd been around decades. Every era has its own way of looking back, and the reflection found there depends on who's looking. When I was young, stories and songs about the Great Depression were very common, and that impacted me as much as anything current. These days, I've got my own range of history to pull from. Abandoned homes sitting empty since the 1980s and 90s, old roads left to nature since the 60s and 70s, and lost gravestones dating back a century earlier.
