☆A World Without Color - Undertale Doujin☆ When it comes to creating doujinshi artists really need to have a lot of ... DETERMINATION! Today we're taking a look at an Undertale themed doujinshi by Parka Cucullo's Shin Akamine. Iro no Nai Sekai (A World Without Color) explores the friendship between the mysterious Gaster and the jovial skeleton Sans. Though in this story the two have just met, Gaster finds himself able to open up to Sans about his troubles. This doujin is B5 sized and covers 24 pages, with the cover using a beautiful metallic styled paper (the right-side image is a photo of the cover). It's also suitable for all ages, so you can pay for it with PayPal too! This doujinshi is sold on the Mandarake online store by consignment, so when you buy it you're supporting the artist directly enabling them to keep making great work in the future. And if you're worried about them getting in trouble with Undertale creator Toby Fox, there's no need to worry! In 2016 he mentioned in a Twitter post that it's ok for artists to produce doujinshi based on Undertale ... legend. http://undertale.tumblr.com/post/150309977310/doujinshi If you want to see what other consignment doujinshi we have available at Mandarake, simply click the link below! IroTale - Chapter 2
I swear the writer's block on this was insane. It took FOREVER to write this chapter. Anyway, I hope to keep up with this story as well as SeasonTale as they might cross paths... Masterpost Here we go!
~o0o~
“Stop!”
Papyrus laid down his bone weapons, breathing heavily. Iro couldn’t stop her momentum in time as her swords ran right through the dummy, shredding it.
“Is that all you got?” Undye shook her head, grabbing the bone from Papyrus’ hands and throwing it at a nearby dummy. “You’re too slow, you’re knees aren’t far enough apart, and your stance is horrible,” she added, shoving Papyrus’ shoulder, making him fall over.
Iro brushed her face, setting her swords down. She watched her brother get up and brush his jacket off, sighing. “Why didn’t you tell me that before?” He asked.
“I needed to see where you were first,” Undye shrugged. “It’s a waste of time to teach you something you’re already good at.”
“But-”
“You’re not here to question me; you’re here to learn!” Undye snapped, grabbing Papyrus’ spear and shoving it into his hands once more. “Get up.”
Iro narrowed her eyes. She was only three, but Gaster had developed her consciousness enough to know she shouldn’t just stand by and let her brother be pushed around. “Undye!” She snapped.
Undye glared in her direction. “As for you, you think you’re all in a bag of chips with your abilities! Your pride will lead to your downfall!”
Iro rotated her katanas around, pointing them at Undye. “So then work that pride out of me, fish.”
Undye sneered, lunging for Iro. Her spears collided with Iro’s katanas as Iro barely blocked the attack. Iro skidded to a halt from the momentum before commanding bones to fly up at Undye, blocking her path. Iro had just enough time to recalibrate before she fired up her gaster blasters, like Papyrus taught her to.
Undye sliced the bones in half before running at Iro, hurling a spear toward her. But the spear was melted by the two blaster shots. Undye barely ducked in time, saving her life.
Iro stopped her attacks as she felt the black spots on her head grow. She rubbed her head, groaning. It was painful whenever the spots grew; Gaster told her that they grew whenever she did something she would regret later on, if not at that moment. She did remember what he said about them being permanent unless she forgave herself.
But she never did.
“You’re going to get someone killed! You proud of yourself?!” Undye shouted, throwing two spears at Iro, and pinning her to a wall. “You make me sick, you arrogant child!”
Iro made a sour face. “Why train to fight if you can’t kill?! What’s the point?! Why be unnecessarily mean to Papyrus if there’s no intention of harming him?!”
Undye spat in Iro’s face. “It’s learning to control your power! Do you want to kill everyone you fight?! Huh?!”
Deep down, Iro knew Undye was right, but she didn’t want to submit to someone cruel for no reason. I’ll never become like that. Like you.
“That’s what I thought, moron.” Undye slammed Iro harder into the wall before turning to Papyrus. “Both of you, out of my sight! You’ll never amount to anything with attitudes like that, you annoying brats!”
Papyrus tried to stop her, but Undye stormed off with her helmet, cursing with every step.
Iro took a step forward before falling face-first on the ground. It felt like Undye had snapped her back in two. When she tried to get up, she collapsed on her face once more, crying out in pain.
Papyrus bent down and pulled her onto her feet, causing her to cry out in pain once more. “Why did you test her?” Papyrus sighed. “Did you not know she would snap?”
“She was hurting you-” Iro coughed, trying not to wince as Papyrus carried her on his back. “I couldn’t just… let that happen.”
“I didn’t want you to intervene; I can fight too, you know,” Papyrus flattened his face. “We screwed up our first impressions.”
“Who cares what she thinks? She was a jerk.”
Papyrus nodded silently as they walked along the paths of Snowdin. Iro tilted her head to watch the frozen river float with large ice cubes. Snowdin was supposed to get incredibly cold this time of year. But for some reason, all seemed normal.
The inhabitants made sure to stay far away from Undye as she stormed through all the way to Hotland. It was expected, of course. Everything seemed to tick her off. She never had the decency to be kind to anyone. The only person she sort of sucked up to was King Asgore himself.
When Iro thought about it, everyone loved the king. He was gentle, kind, and a great leader to his people. He was flawless in the eyes of many.
Iro didn’t see him as that. Why was there a rebellion against him if he was this great king? His own ex-wife, Iro!Toriel was leading it. More monsters were joining it by the day. Even Iro’s own father wasn’t entirely on the king’s side. He always made sure she and Papyrus were wary of what the King asked and what he did. He never fully trusted the king; Iro wondered if that was due to their disagreements on how she and her brother were being raised.
“I don’t think we are going to get any more training from Undye,” Paps sighed as he sat Iro down near the front door of their house.
“What? Because I beat her a-”
“Manners.”
“Sorry…” Iro winced at every step she took. She opened the oval door and collapsed on the nearest couch, her swords falling to her side. A loud groan escaped her bones as tears of pain fell out of her eyes.
Papyrus also limped into the house, rubbing his head and sitting in a chair. He looked at his shoulders and hands and didn’t hesitate to wrap them in his scarf until he could get bandages on them. “How are we going to learn how to fight without her?” The spots on his head crawled up his skull. “She was supposed to help us…”
“She tried to kill us,” Iro rolled her eyes. “We can learn on our own. Let’s learn from the books and practice it ourselves. We don’t need Undye.”
Papyrus sighed and sunk into the chair. “I suppose that could work…” He tried to sit up and look around. “Where is Gaster?”
“Maybe he’s at the lab with Iro!Alphys,” Iro sighed. “I thought I heard something about Alphys wanting to know what the gems on Dad’s neck were.”
“Oh, those,” Pap’s eyebrows furrowed. “They looked very similar to the gems that activated the power buttons that the humans have. Supposedly, they don’t come off until the host is dead.”
“Like a frickin parasite,” Iro’s face read disgust all over it.
“I’ll go grab the bandages,” Papyrus offered. “Let’s patch up those broken bones. Maybe we can go to the lab and help Dad. I’m sure there’s something there we can do.”
Iro nodded as she watched her brother go off. She sighed; the pain in her bones slowly grew numb with her frustration toward Undye. That fish had no right to mess with her and Papyrus like that! They were supposed to come help make her job easier! Iro couldn’t find an excuse in her right mind to forgive Undye for her cruel actions. Who cares if that was just ‘her?’ It irritated Iro, and she refused to stand down and succumb to that kind of vile behavior. Why, if she could, she would-
“Here,” Papyrus broke her train of thought, holding a roll of bandages before her. “Let me know if you need help wrapping anything. I’m sure we can take the boat to the lab.
She concluded there really wasn’t any use to sit in anger about what happened. Iro recalled how Gaster told her to move forward, even when it was hard. She thanked her brother and started to wrap the cracks around her bones. Occasionally, Papyrus helped her wrap bandages around her back or neck. They both wondered how they would explain what had happened to their dad. Although, both of them knew nothing bad would happen. Gaster was a loving father, and if there were any issues that they were having, he would encourage them to learn from them and take care of it himself.
Iro!Papyrus was able to lead Iro!Sans to the boat. The ride on the river was very quiet, with the infrequent “Toodaloo” from the anonymous captain. Paps told Iro to be quiet and to not speak about many things. When they got off, he explained that it was best not to discuss too many things publicly. No one really knew which side the other was on. Although Iro wanted to object, the seriousness of the rebellion kept her mouth shut. Maybe there’s a reason why it’s grown so big…
Iro didn’t remember much of the walk after that. She was lost in her own thoughts, imagining a world without rebellion and everyone was living in peace. How special, she sighed. But… how long does peace really last?
Alphys’ greeting snapped her back into reality. Papyrus made sure to walk behind Iro as they trailed down the stairs. Iro always took the damp, dusty lab to be an interesting place. The walls were made of large, smooth stones and eerie sound echoed across the caverns as they continued in a downward spiral to the workplace. It was specially designed to test the patience of whoever came. Only the patient would receive the reward for the discoveries in the lab.
“Iro! Papyrus!” Iro!Gaster exclaimed, setting down the vials in his hands as he ran up to hug his children. “It’s so good to see you!” He took a moment to look at them. Papyrus couldn’t contain his smile. “Hi, dad!” He smirked. “Whatcha working on-”
“What happened to you?” Gaster cupped Iro’s face and observed the bandage on her neck. The smile fled as if it was smacked off. “Who did this?”
“Undye,” Iro blatantly stated. “She was unfair to us.”
“It… truly wasn’t best case scenario,” Papyrus added. “I don’t understand why she had to go so far.”
Gaster stood up and sighed, asking Alphys to grab something for their bones. “It was only your first day…” He adjusted his glasses and set down his notebook. “Though, on the bright side, real battles won’t give you a break.”
“They won’t try to spare you either,” Paps recalled. “It wasn’t all bad.”
Iro lifted her eyebrows. She couldn’t quite grasp how Papyrus stayed so positive. No matter how horrible a situation got, he always turned it around. Must be a gift. She sighed. I can’t seem to do that.
“Ah, well enough on that manner,” Gaster shrugged. “Would you guys want to help me work on a cure for bone flu?”
The kids jumped in excitement. They scrambled to the station and put on the safety equipment. Gaster chuckled and followed behind, leaving poor Alphys to run after them the moment she got back.
Iro and Paps were always excited to learn. Gaster made learning fun, and they advanced way faster than other students her age. This led them to help Gaster in his actual studies and be enrolled in training at such a young age. It was one of the ways they made their father proud.
The session was full of laughter and puns, to Papyrus’ dismay. Hours felt like minutes as they tested various materials. Alphys led most of the research after she applied a secret cream to the kid’s bones. Iro didn’t feel much pain after it dried, which was nice.
The lizard was certain the answer to the bone flu was in the gems around Gaster’s neck. He only shook his head and told her no, because they were used for something else. Although Iro had more questions, Papyrus’ ramble about how gems were made put her questions to sleep.
They would never be answered.
“What have you found, Iro?” Gaster walked over to her and tilted his head.
“Not much,” Iro sighed. “I’ve only seen bone flu react to three chemicals, all in a negative way.”
“Hey, that’s still research and progress!” Gaster smiled. “This will help us know what not to take if we catch bone flu.” He rubbed Iro’s head gently and glanced toward his son. “Papy?”
“I’ve one found positive reaction, Dad!” His face beamed with joy. “Bone flu pauses when it comes in contact with lemons!”
Even Gaster seemed surprised by the result. “Where did you get lemons?”
“At the store, I was hungry and wanted to make some lemonade for me and Iro, but never got the chance to after the session.”
“G-Got any other f-food in there?” Alphys anxiously asked, twirling her fingers. “I do! Would you like some?”
Iro didn’t hear the rest of the conversation. Her brother found something positive and she didn’t. How could this be? She worked really hard, and she didn’t find anything good…
“Hey,” Gaster had come around the table and knelt beside her. “Why the long face?”
“I…” Iro paused, holding her arms together. “I just wish I found something like Paps did, instead of negative things.”
“Hey don’t think that way,” Gaster smiled sweetly. “You still discovered something! That’s progress, and if you continue to search for answers, they come your way. Don’t compare to others, just look at the progress you made.”
Iro nodded, glancing at the ground. She didn’t know how to process what her dad was saying. But I still didn’t find anything.
“Y’know what?” Gaster nudged her shoulder with one of his hands. “Sometimes the negative findings helps us a little bit more than the positive,” he winked. “You will always succeed, my daughter. Don’t ever give up, and you will accomplish what you set out to do. For the opposite of success isn’t failure, it’s giving up. Take that from papa, okay?”
A tear left Iro’s eye as she walked up to her dad and swung her arms around it. “Thank you daddy.”
Gaster didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around her in a tight embrace. “I love you, Iro.”
The peace that Iro felt in her father’s arms was indescribable. She wished she would hug him more often, as it felt really nice. Her dad always knew what to say, and he always made her feel better. One day, she vowed to repay him for all the help he gave her.
“I love you too, father.”

IroTale - The end of UnderReinado
Don't read if you don't want spoilers. Do you get context for this? Soon. I wrote this off an inspiration spree and need to post something useful XD Yes, this is canon. All characters belong to me. I forgot who OuterTale belongs to. Error belongs to LoverOfPiggies.
~o0o~
Iro walked in to what she expected. Mountains were falling and the foundations of the world were screaming for help. Something she had seen countless times. Something she never wanted to see in this world. "Ahhh, so the special guest has finally arrived!" Aldrich grinned with his hands up in the air and his smile wide. "Welcome to the party!" Iro did not return such satisfaction. Her eyes narrowed at she observed the light from the foundations starting to break through the cracks of destruction. The stars started to fall, and the islands crumbled. She brushed the palm of her hands on her outfit, cleaning her gloves. Error wasn't going to be happy.
"So this is how you feel when an ENTIRE WORLD is at your mercy!" Aldrich spun with glee, his eyes getting crazier by the second. "The adrenaline is INSANE! It's coursing through my veins!" He let out a consistent cackle that shook his own bones. In the corner of her eye. the ghostwriter spotted the prince's trusted advisor. Ellinor couldn't stop her tears that fell down from her face. After observing the torn prince's robe in her hands, it was clear she had tried to stop him. And he had the audacity to hit her within the presence of OuterTale's stars. "ENOUGH." She could've sworn Aldrich flinched at her voice. "I told you this AU was off limits, Aldrich." Iro hissed in a tone that would make a mortal cower. "Oh please," Aldrich's face frowned and turned to face his creator. "You've broken the same rule before. These people dishonored me! I only did what you did with-" "Does it look like I asked for your excuse?" Iro pulled one of the swords from her backs, approaching the prince. "Stop. Stop this destruction now and I might forgive you for disobeying my orders." "The lights of the foundations have shot from the ground, it is too late." Aldrich bowed playfully. "Just help me finish this, and we can go to your next target." "No, this AU will be preserved. Error said so-" "Why do you even care for that guy anyway?!" Aldrich sneered, his hand traveled to the whip on his pocket. "He's done nothing but horrible things to you! I am repaying him for everything!" "He's done nothing to you. But I will," Iro's eyes started to glow and the dots on her head shifted. "You and your kingdom will punish for this." Aldrich dropped his shoulders. "Really? Another sacrifice? Does the destruction of this AU not suffice your need for blood?!" "Not the blood of innocents." "Hell you mean 'the blood of innocents'? That was your favorite!" Iro did not waver, staying silent. She and Aldrich both knew there wasn't much of his AU left to destroy or take away from him. Iro hoped it would dent his ego if the punishment was severe enough, but it only made him mad. It only made him like her. Aldrich looked around at the meteors and falling stars before glancing over at Ellinor. The red and orange glow of the flames did not compliment her face, and it only dried up her tears to stain her face. Iro guessed she was trying to calculate a way to save OuterTale with her little power to RESET. She made eye contact with the prince, before heaving a sigh of disgust and brokenness. Aldrich grabbed her by the scruff and threw her towards Iro. "There, there is your sacrifice to punish me." Iro raised an eyebrow. His actions became unpredictable. Iro glanced down at the frisk variant. "I'm so sorry ma'am…" Ellinor shook from fear. "I tried to stop him… he wouldn't listen…" Iro grabbed Ellinor and held her up. Her sword was to Ellinor's throat, and two gaster blasters appeared behind her. Ellinor squeaked with fright, her eyes widened at the sudden threat. "Go on then. what are you waiting for?" Aldrich leaned against a rock, watching impatiently. Iro paused, staring into Ellinor's soul before appearing into Aldrichs. "Isn't this your friend? Your most trusted advisor?"
Aldrich laughed before cracking is whip in sync to the meteors crashing on the city. "What?" He sneered. "She means nothing to me. Look at her, I never cared about her. She was an obstacle in my path, and this is my chance to get rid of her." Iro almost felt pity for the girl struggling in her grip. Her gloves were soaked from the girls tears before she went limp. The will to live… to continue on… was no longer in her soul. Her soul of perseverance was giving up. "Go on then, kill her." Aldrich her. "I would love to watch." Iro never thought she would find his smile so horrendous. Her eyes narrowed as the gaster blasters fired up. It would only take one shot to obliterate her. But Iro hesitated. "Ohhhh right, I forgot," Aldrich rolled his eyes, cracking his whip as he approached Iro, seething. "You've grown soft! You don't want to kill anymore," he mocked with his face and fingers. "You can't destroy your own creations after what happened to the other. You're weak." There was another pause as Iro glanced up at Aldrich… no, this couldn't possibly be the prince she created. He wasn't like this before. He wasn't like this until… Until he met her. "You can't even kill the pathetic soul!" Aldrich slapped his own head. "Look just give her back, fix OuterTale or whatever, and we can go to your next target." Iro smiled and stared at Aldrich. "Fine, onto my next target." The grin was wiped off Aldrich's face when the gaster blasters fired into his chest. Iro whipped out her other sword and lunged for Aldrich, cutting his head clean off his neck. She whipped around and stomped on his skull, bending over and smirking. "You have lost your life privileges, peasant." A slight giggle escaped her throat as her victim's dust covered her shoe. "It's about time I put you in your place where you belonged." Ellinor collapsed onto the ground before finding her footing again. "Thank you…" She sighed. "You're-" She was cut off as Iro was suddenly in front of her, holding her in a choking position once more. Her eyes glowed with fury as she spoke. "Run." Ellinor's eyes widened as she gasped for breath. "Run little one, before I change my mind on sparing your life," Iro hissed, dropping Ellinor to the floor. The girl didn't hesitate to nod and run away as fast as she could. Two bright flashes of light followed from the resetting of the OuterTale Timeline. It didn't take as long as the ghostwriter expected, and it gave her the opprutunity to glance back at the pile of dust she created. "Hmmph," She smirked, stretching. "From dust you were born to dust you will return, amiright?" The silence was pleasing to her ear as she watched the alternate universe string itself back together. "Two down, one to go."

Introducing Orel!Sans
Orel!Sans lived in an AU where controlling objects around them were normal. He doesn't remember much. What he does remember is the destruction of his AU by Iro!Sans, but he only remembers her face, not what she did. Orel seeks Iro for answers. He fused with Orel!Gaster during his AUs destruction, giving him abnormal Gaster abilities, including his many hands.
Orel!Sans wields a blade similar to a double-blade lightsaber. All of his hands can use this blade. He's a mixture of Summer and Winter Sans personality wise. He's very clever and powerful. He has two white hands out of his many black hands. These are the hands that control the rest. They usually reside on his face unless he's attacking with multiple hands.
Orel seeks Iro to this day for answers about his AU, but occasionally helps AUs that he stumbled upon. How he helps them is unknown. Until he finds her, he resides and assists anyone he can, saying "I don't know, it just seems right to do so."

IroTale - Masterpost
Born in a world where everyone has the ability to alter the code of themselves, the people around them, and the multiverse around them, this is IroTale.
Iro!Gaster experimented in the lab for many years until he finally made his daughter, Iro Sans. He disappeared without a trace, leaving Iro and Papyrus in Asgore's care. They trained with Undye for three years, before they met their first human.
The humans shared the code-bending abilities with everyone until Asgore got greedy and killed the humans for their power. Iro and Papyrus tried to stop him, but it came at the cost of their entire world.
Iro was the only one left alive after she used the code-bending ability DESTROY on Asgore. Overwhelmed with grief, she joins Error in destroying the multiverse, searching for the Omega Timeline after a fight with Ink.

This is a question and not asking the season sans or iro the question I'm going to ask is the season sans father abusive because I have not read the lore and I am going to plan to read the lore on summer break, so, yeah, this is a question I'm wondering
All the Gasters have horrible tendencies that fall into that category, yes.

Aww! Thank you skele-things! I appreciate it! And no one has asked me this yet (:
DISCLAIMER: I have many many many many many many OC's... especially outside the Undertale fandom. BUT- I'll try to center around Undertale as those are known best! Questions below!
I mean, I love all my boys equally what do you mean- Winter Sans. Outside of UTMV? Garrison, a character in my novel.
For the UTMV - Iro!Sans. My girl has been with me for... six months now.
Too many. UTMV-wise, eight 6. I have six, for now.
For the UTMV yeah! I've kept all of them!
I got inspiration for SeasonTale based off one Game of Thrones clip I saw with a dragon, a man, and a woman, and the bad sanses. It was literally only one scene, and it sparked a story!
Heh, Sanses... Outside of UTMV? I love writing elves, creatures I make myself, or humans! Humans are so interesting when they're powerless in a powerful world.
Unless you count a girl Sans original... nope! As for my other books, I've made a TON of fantasy species! The main character in my novel, The Fergen, is a Fergen! Which is an elf with dragon wings and can breathe fire! Lmk if you wanna hear more.
aaaaaa sadly I am not confident in my art enough to draw my characters... I will learn someday, I hope!
Winter: "Must you cause yourself pain to get revenge? It isn't worth it! This is only hurting you!"
Oh yeah! SeasonTale and IroTale have very complex and intricate stories that I am in process of writing! You can find more info on their masterposts!
Oh, good question! Although some come close, nope!
Yep! Winter Sans and Summer Sans are brothers! That's why Summer's eyes can sometimes be seen as snowflakes!
Male. I make a lot of females outside the UTMV though; it's been really interesting to learn about how the male mind works when writing them!
Crap ya didn't give me any concept to go off of! Haha! I am a creative dumpster, if you give me some concepts, I can definitely spit out some ideas!
Yes, I have given a ton up outside the UTMV, so I am sure it could happen with my Sanses, unfortunately. But I don't plan to anytime soon (:
If Cocoa!Sans doesn't count, as I made it with a community, then probably Iro!Gaster, who is timeless. W!Gaster is like... 250 years old too.
Oh yeah! All the time! It's how I flush out some of the lore! Usually, it's on discord.
I was about to say none but then I remembered Reformed!Error, haha! So I guess 1?
Like I said I love all my boys equally- there's Chester from my novel... as for my UTMV? Hmmm... Maybe F!Gaster (Fall!Gaster). He's very cowardly and I don't like his character, but it serves a purpose.
Definitely Iro!Sans. She went from a maintenance Undye to who she is today. She's developed a LOT.
I created all my Season Sanses together... probably Solstice!Asgore. He's a new edition to the story!
Nope! I don't have the money to cosplay ;'/
Iro!Sans probably, mainly because of how her villainhood is from her brokenness, and honestly... she just needs a big hug. I relate to some of her brokenness and needing a hug so she's always been a character that in every scene I write with her, it hits deep.
Nope! None that I know of! If you have please let me see!
Probably Cocoa!Sans! I don't get to talk about my jolly old pal and his cafe a lot! He's super sweet and loves serving coffee from CoffeeTale, and his cafe is a universal hotspot! I've heard there's a lot of similarities between him and Ccino, though I've never read Ccino!Sans' story before.
WOW! What good questions! Thank you for allowing me to answer them!
Always feel free to ask whatever questions you have! (: Have a splendid day!

IroTale: Chapter 1
"It worked! I can't believe it worked!"
"Are you sure this was a good idea, Gaster?"
"Why wouldn't it be? I've created a female Sans!"
"All the other Sans in the multiverse are male. Wouldn't that become a problem?"
"Don't worry; my daughter will be able to defend herself. She will help Papyrus in the royal guard when they are older.”
She stirred after the voices started to become clearer. Her eyes fluttered open to see two figures above her. One of them was smiling down at her.
The smiling figure had an off-white head with a large crack running through it. He had small white pupils in his pitch-black eyes. His smile was gentle and complimented his silver and blue coat. He held a needle and a clipboard in his round hands. He wore circular glasses on his non-existent ears.
The other figure was not smiling, but he didn’t seem upset. He looked like a big goat with lots of brown floofy hair. His horns were massive, and he wore a light blue cape around his armor. His eyes told wondrous stories of all he had seen.
“Sweetheart, welcome to IroTale,” the white-faced skeleton greeted. “I’m Gaster, your father.”
“I’m Asgore, the underground king,” the goat waved. “Welcome to my kingdom.”
She stared at both of them for a long time. She wanted to communicate with them but wasn’t sure if the right words would come out. Heck, what would she even say? Could she even speak? She was fully conscious, yet everything felt so new. She couldn’t remember anything.
“Agh! I need to call you something,” Gaster stepped back and opened a nearby drawer. “I can’t call you Sans… I have to find another name….”
“Sansa?” The king recommended, glancing at the girl skeleton.
She took a look at herself. Although she didn’t know what a male skeleton looked like, she could tell that her bones were thinner, smaller, and her body shape was curvier. She had a slimmer face when she traced it than that of Gaster. She felt small and exposed. She wanted to cover up her upper bones with something like the other monsters.
“Wait,” Gaster turned around. “Let’s call her Iro.”
“Are you kidding?” Asgore raised his eyebrow. “That’s what our AU is called. Isn’t that a little preposterous?”
“Not at all!” Gaster smiled. “She’s going to be the guard of this AU anyway, it only makes sense.” He scribbled something on his notebook furiously before walking back up to her. “What do you say, child? Would you like to be called Iro?”
The name resonated with her as if she was destined to be called it. She felt peace settle in her soul as she nodded. She didn’t know what this meant, but associating with this weird skeleton man felt right.
“Perfect, now, Iro, Asgore will find you some clothes to wear while I get your brother,” Gaster smiled. “He’s been anxious to meet you.”
She had a sibling? Sibling… the word sounded so familiar. She moved her mouth to speak but couldn’t make any noise.
“Oh, don’t worry,” Asgore shrugged as he tossed her a black undergarment and a faded white and blue robe. “You’ll learn how to speak soon. For now, just communicate with us with yes and no, got it?”
Iro nodded.
Both of the grown monsters left the room, leaving her alone.
Iro spent no time observing the room as she grabbed the clothes and shoved them on, getting her arm stuck. She wiggled out of it before sliding the robe on. It had a large black symbol on the side. What does this mean?
She tried getting off the bed but collapsed immediately. Her bones ached. She knew she shouldn’t have tried to walk despite never using her legs before, but she wanted to walk around as fast as the guy named Gaster did. However, she couldn’t seem to stand, no matter how hard she tried. Her bones shook with every moment. She felt so weak. Why couldn’t she move?
Gaster came back through the left door. “Okay, Papyrus, be gentle-”
“Oh my gosh!” A young skeleton jumped from behind the doctor’s leg. He had a taller face and large teeth. His smile was wide, along with his chest. He wore a black shirt and a robe identical to what Iro just put on. Iro didn’t have time to observe the rest before the skeleton ran toward her and threw his arms around her. “I have a sister oh my gosh, look how beautiful you are!” He squealed. “I promise to protect you forever!”
“Now, now, Paps, give Iro some space,” Gaster laid his holed hand on the skeleton’s shoulder and pulled him back. “But, you can help teach her how to walk if you like.”
“Oh, I would be so happy to!” Papyrus’ smile was so wide Iro was convinced it could break the universe. “You have such a cool name. Iro, Iro, Iro…” He walked up to where Iro was sitting again. “Here! I can teach you how to walk and speak! Grab my hand, I have so much to show you!”
“Are you sure it's good for Papyrus to teach Iro all these things?” Asgore lifted his eyebrow as he addressed the doctor. “Our education system can teach her that and more, Gaster.”
“I understand your concern,” Gaster dismissed the king. “But I want Iro to learn other things. It’s how she will become a royal guard, after all.”
“Like me, papa?” Papyrus gleamed as he lifted Iro to her feet. His attention went back to his sister. “Oh, you’re eyes are so shiny! They look like the color of my scarf!” He pointed to the long blue scarf that was tied around his neck. “Okay, do you feel the strength coming to your legs?”
Iro nodded as her legs shook. She could feel it getting easier to stand by the minute, but it still took her effort.
“Okay, this may take a while. You’re going to put one foot over the other, okay? Don’t worry. I’ll be here to catch you if you fall,” Papyrus instructed. The warm smile on his face never left as he caught Iro after her first step. He said something to Gaster, which Iro didn’t catch, and he said something back in a language she couldn’t understand. She’d assume she would learn it if they were teaching her.
The King looked annoyed at the exchanged tone before leaving the room. Her attention was drawn off Asgore as Papyrus started to talk to her. She liked her brother’s voice. It felt so familiar. It made her feel warm inside to know he was there. After she stumbled another time, Gaster chuckled softly and picked Iro up, guiding her to her new home. “Welcome home, my daughter.”
* * *
It took Iro forever how to learn to speak. She still had trouble with it after the first two months. However, she learned to speak the hidden language of her family very soon. Why were strange noises easier to sound out? She didn’t know. The hidden language within her family was also easier to write. She immediately found it easy to write and had a natural talent for it. Like her father, she started carrying a notebook to write whenever she saw something cool in the underground.
Papyrus insisted that she practiced walking every day. It only took her a month to learn. He asked Gaster many questions on how to help Iro in everyday things, which the doctor’s reply was always that she would learn over time. Iro thought that Gaster often taught Papyrus patience through this.
Gaster was very kind to him and Iro. He often would take them to the park and walk around. He would show them the wonders of the underground forest and all their creatures. Gaster made sure to teach them how to interact with other monsters as well. Iro never regretted spending time with her dad over the three years he had taught her. He was always patient with mistakes and made sure they studied hard.
Papyrus couldn’t ever stop talking. He showed Iro wondrous things, including how to use their powers. Iro’s brother was fascinated with the little things in life, and he never forgot anything that made him happy. Despite his joy, he was very responsible. He protected Iro at all costs, as Gaster had taught him to. He read many books with her in their free time, including about humans.
“I can’t wait to meet a human one day!” Papyrus exclaimed as he closed the book. “What cool powers they have! They can alter reality!”
“That’s pretty sick, bro,” Iro yawned, getting up from the floor. “I would like to talk with one.”
“We have to make sure to capture it first,” Papyrus twirled the long blue scarf around his neck. It made him look sharper, in Iro’s opinion. “Then we can talk to it. Oh, it would be so cool to have the power to IMAGINE. Can you imagine?”
“Did you just crack a pun?” Iro snickered. “I never thought I’d hear that from you.”
“Seems like you’re rubbing off on me,” Papyrus sighed.
“What’s wrong?” Iro asked as she sat beside him on the bed.
“Tomorrow, you know?” Papyrus played with his light blue mittens. Iro learned that despite Papyrus’ bravery and valiance, he was always anxious and fidgeted with something. “It’s our first day being trained as royal guards. What if… we aren’t ready? I heard Undye is very strict.”
“If anyone can withstand her, it’s you, Paps,” Iro rested a hand on his shoulder. “You’re my big bro. You can do anything you want!”
“Hey, that’s my line!” Papyrus smiled and shoved her. “You got that from me!”
“I learn from the best.”
Papyrus didn’t have time to reply before he heard a loud shout in the other room. Two voices raised at each other in a heated argument. However, the skeletons didn’t move. This was normal, after all.
Iro could tell Gaster was arguing with Asgore again. His voice sounded upset. She couldn’t make out all that was said, but she knew that Gaster was arguing with the king for them, Papyrus and Iro. He met with the king often and insisted that they were the royal guards of the AU. He wanted them to have the best life and learn all they could from the library. Asgore would counteract his arguments by bringing up Toriel and her rising rebellion against his rule. He had to ensure every student was raised the same way to keep his power. Gaster refused to give up the life he worked so hard for his kids. The last thing he would do is force his family into poverty. The king would often leave enraged, losing the argument. He couldn’t go against the doctor, after all. Gaster did too much for his power and kingdom.
The king’s booming voice shook the halls. Hearing Gaster’s still and quiet voice over Asgore’s was hard. Iro recalled how Gaster had taught her and Papyrus always to return wrath with gentleness, as it tends to calm others down. Whenever they tried it, it did work. Because of this, the rest of the monsters in the underground were never angry with them for long.
The trick worked for everyone except for Gaster and the king.
Gaster would never elaborate on why Asgore was always angry with him. He told Iro not to worry about him and continue her studies. Papyrus and Iro could never figure out why Gaster kept things from them and why he fought with the king. One day I’ll figure out what’s going on.
“Hey, let’s do something to distract ourselves,” Papyrus suggested. “Dad will handle the king. He always has. There’s no need to—”
The shouting stopped.
Both skeleton children glanced up to see the door to their room open. Gaster’s royal robe—identical to theirs—fell to his sides as he rubbed his head. He smiled sweetly at them. “Good evening, my children. Why are you not asleep?”
Papyrus ran up to him and hugged him. “We were worried Dad.”
“You have a big day tomorrow,” Gaster sighed. “Don’t stress over my problems. You need all the energy you can get for your training tomorrow.”
Iro always felt comfort in Gaster’s smile. He slowly pet Papyrus with his holed hand. Iro wondered why she and Paps had arms, but not Gaster. The thought left her mind as her father made eye contact with her. “You’re up too?”
“Papyrus just got done reading a book, we weren’t up long after that,” Iro spoke softly. She couldn’t find the will to talk any louder. “Don’t you have a big day tomorrow, too?”
“Ah, so you’ve been reading your reasoning books,” Gaster closed his eyes in relief. “You won’t be blindsided like the rest of the monsters…”
“We learned a lot today from them,” Papyrus raised a fist in the air in triumph. “We also read about humans and their code-bending powers!”
“Did you?” Gaster sat on a sofa nearby. “Why don’t you guys tell me all about it tomorrow after your training? I do want you to get some rest.”
“Not until we help you with your problems, Dad,” Papyrus insisted. “I’m not going to let you stress over the king and his desire for power.”
Iro always loved how her brother was direct and helpful. However, she wasn’t sure how they could help their father. They were only kids. Well, kids that grow really fast and have mature minds.
“You are very sweet, Paps,” Gaster slouched in the chair as his eyes fluttered. They looked very heavy and Gaster seemed overwhelmingly tired. “Do you want to know how you can help?”
“Of course, father!” Papyrus grabbed Gaster’s hand. “I’ll do anything!”
“I second that!” Iro stood up from the bed, grabbing Gaster’s other hand. “I want to help in any way I can.”
“Then promise me this,” Gaster squeezed his children’s hands. “Do not let Asgore near any of the humans you find, ever. I don’t care what he tells you. Don’t let him get their powers, understood?”
“Why?” Iro asked.
“Understood, Dad,” Papyrus nudged Iro. “I’m sure we’ll learn in due time.”
Gaster’s head turned towards Iro as he smiled. “I’ll tell you tomorrow, sweetheart. Papa’s really tired right now… Let your daddy rest, okay?”
Iro barely whispered ‘I love you’ before Gaster was asleep. Papyrus frowned as he picked up Gaster with his arms and traveled to his room, Iro following close behind. The stairs were silent and still. Iro glanced at their house while they climbed up. There were colorful pictures across the walls and beauitul chandeliers. The furniture was always soft and the house itself was spacious with a big backyard. They were very blessed to have such a big home.
They both tucked their father in before watching him sleep peacefully. Gaster fell into a deep slumber as his breathing slowed. He curled up his body, unable to move from a ball position.
Papyrus tapped Iro’s shoulder to exit the room before he spoke. “I hate seeing him like this,” Iro watched Papyrus fight the urge to light up his eye in rage. “He’s always this way after he talks with the king. It’s as if it drains all of his power just trying to protect us.”
Iro and Papyrus closed the door before they conversed. “I don’t think we can help him much, brother. We aren’t skilled enough.”
“I just don’t understand why the king wants us to live like the rest of the monsters…”
“I don’t either,” Iro sighed. “But hey, if we do our best to become royal guards, we can protect our father and make a difference!”
“You’re right,” Papyrus glanced up. “We have to do our best tomorrow! Then we can help our father!” He smiled at Iro before hugging her. “You’re so smart sis, I’ll see you in the morning!”
Iro smiled before waving at him. She watched in silence as her brother bounded down the stairs and into his room. She sighed, glancing back at her sleeping father.
We’re going to help you dad, if it’s the last thing we do.
I will make sure we will repay you tenfold for all you have done for us.
