For Silver and Black, any headcanons about the other engines at the IRM? I wonder if Pilot, 1630, and the electroliner get along since they’re the ‘faces’ of the museum. There’s also that Q Hudson, 504, 9925 and 9976. They probably all hang out as the Q club lol. I wonder if they like the BN units?
The IRM is practically a chronic and compulsive character designer's dream. I could spend the rest of my life making little guys out of their roster and probably not ever get bored, so you can bet DJ (@greatwesternway) and I have spent the past 13 months doing exactly that lol.
1630 was absolutely one of the first ones we worked on after Pilot, given that she's so iconic and important to the IRM. Engines with stories are far and away the easiest to write for, and 1630 has a great one. Plus, she's a face as you say! I like to characterize her as a bold and confident problem solver, especially having read some of the old Rail & Wires from the time period when she was undergoing restoration. Her first trial run went so well they had her pulling trains even though she was supposed to just be fired for testing, and that to me informs so much of her personality. She was ready to work from the jump! She's obviously besties with Shay 5, being that they've worked together for so many years, and I like to think they're sort of the de facto ambassadors for the steam department with the rest of the museum.
The Electroliner, I'm a little embarrassed to say, I only got around to learning about recently even though I was struck immediately by the design. I like to picture her as a more blue-collar version of the Zephyrs, streamlined and modern but still very much of the people. I haven't explored her history that much since we haven't gotten there in the letters yet, but I'm excited to learn more! I think she and Pilot get along really well, but that's sort of a given since Pilot gets along with everybody.
Some other characters at the IRM that get some play in the discussion are The Goddesses, who all have unique personalities and have been cropping up more frequently in the letters. We've also casually written some thoughts down about the other Pullman streamlined cars (Birmingham and Loch Sloy) as well as quite a few of the diesel shunters, since they're literally always out doing stuff at the IRM, and it's easy to fall in love with the engines that are constantly out there working. Our favorite so far is the Commonwealth Edison 15 shunter because he's grey and the last time I saw it out, it was switching the aforementioned Pullman cars around and @joezworld joked that he was going, "Look! I'm a streamliner!" and that has since become basically canon.
I don't have much for the Q steam engines although they're definitely on the list. I'm very interested in the BNs 1, 2, and 3 because I think their story is going to be interesting but I also haven't put much time in on their history yet. Since the museum's roster is so extensive (especially compared to the MSI), we've just been letting the stories inspire us as we learn about them organically. DJ's been adding new entries to the timeline from the IRM's photohistory book, and that alone has sewn some ideas we're definitely going to revisit later, if not in the letters than possibly in some other stories or just for our own amusement.
These questions are *so* good by the way, I'm absolutely loving being able to answer these! Thanks so much!

In light of Your New Boyfriend officially becoming a Gold record (!!!) I want to take this opportunity to talk about it’s neglected middle sibling Internet Ruined Me.
I feel like the reason that it is the least played and least liked of all of the e-girl trilogy is that it hits too close to home and people don’t really like that.
While I’m in Love with an E-girl and Your New Boyfriend are both cut and dry satirical comedic songs (emphasis on comedy), Internet Ruined Me is far more sincere.
Each of the three songs examine and deconstruct the incel mindset, however Internet Ruined Me actually takes the incel seriously and is also empathetic and understanding as to how someone might come to think and behave that way. It’s a reminder of how dangerous and influential the internet can be and how we’ve become both reliant and borderline addicted/obsessed with it. It is a warning about how destructive the internet bubbles we create can be to one’s own sense of self.
Where I’m in Love with an E-girl and Your New Boyfriend couch the incel’s destructive tendencies in light jokes and boppy hooks, Internet Ruined Me holds up a mirror and asks the listener how different the incel is from themselves.
And that’s why it’s my favourite.

The making of my first piece of CG art for IRM! ♡ This isn't in the story quite yet, as I still need to finish the second part, and I still need to properly optimize it for the app, but I figured it couldn't hurt to throw it on here. 🐦‍⬛
I do want to clarify real quick; the background is just the stock slum/night background from The Aracana; I didn't make that part. I ain't that good, yet. 🙃
Be sure to catch the latest episodes of 'In Medias Res' on Dorian! Next episode is being worked on already! 🖋

hey is it up 428 that's been under restoration for forever at irm? what are they like
Tumblr media
It is 428! You can actually donate directly to the restoration effort here!
428 is in a tough position. Steam in particular requires a lot of resources and people who know the machines well to maintain them, and the IRM already has two working steam engines who are a huge draw in their own right. Money, resources, time, and effort are always going to go to the engines in working order because keeping them in steam is a higher priority than restoring something older.
428 is just another in the long line of steam engines the IRM has/had high hopes for. I think the IRM has always wanted to have three steam engines working congruently, but due to circumstance that hasn't always been a viable option. Tuskegee 101 and Commonwealth Edison 5 (not to be confused with CE 15) were both at one time operational, but due to various circumstances outside their control had to be retired from service.
I think this is just one of those things you accept when you're going into preservation. Maybe you get to have a little weekly bridge club with the other also-rans. I can't imagine there's any hard feelings though, since like.. most engines being preserved aren't *expecting* to continue to operate. 428 is just lucky to just be here, and you can tell she knows from her smile! :)
All that considered, I'm imagining 428 as a relentless optimist, which you'd have to be if you spent every day since 1969 in the steam shop being told "we're working on it", lol. I also think she does hang out with Tuskegee 101 and CE 5, because I like the idea of the almost-operational engines having a little informal friend group where they can talk about the problems unique to them. Being operational comes with its own set of responsibilities and expectations not placed on static displays, so I like the idea that they can talk about those problems unique to their station with each other. Tuskegee 101 is especially helpful, I picture her as a pragmatist with a good head on her shoulders. She'd be excited for the opportunity 428 has, but also realistic about managing her expectations. I think it'd be good for the both of them!
If you want to see 428 eventually operational, I do highly recommend checking out the donation link here because as far as I am aware, each restoration project is funded primarily by its own individual resource pool. So like, if you are a member and you pay your $50 to the IRM a year or if you toss a fiver in the tip jar on your way out, that money isn't necessarily going to 428's restoration, it's going to the museum first. I say "as far as I am aware" because this was the model they abided by in the 90s, and it is technically possible they might have changed how they handle funding for their projects, but I sort of doubt it because the IRM is very old and very staid. If they had it their way, nothing would ever change, ever. So if there's a project you want to see happen, it's important to donate directly where possible!

I both love and hate writing scenes with these beloved characters in turmoil. This is a scene from Episode 6: 'Backstage Pass (VII - The Chariot)' of 'In Medias Res' (a re-telling of 'The Arcana' main storylines, through the eyes of the main six).
This scene is actually free in the game, so I also threw together a short video on my YouTube channel with a soundtrack and effects to match; it goes through the entirety of Julian's nightmare in all it's spooky detail. Check it out here:

And be sure to play 'In Medias Res,' only on Dorian.live!
