Opus Colors Episode 11 Review: The Scribbler's Identity

After seven episodes since the reveal of a Scribbler, Kazuya finally learns who the person is: Kyo! I knew it! I just didn’t like the fact that the characters took too long to figure it out. Then again, I guess it was hard because Kyo stopped being an Artist after the Yamanashi couple’s death and became a Grader instead, so it was hard to suspect someone who stopped doing art.

The build-up of the reveal was thoroughly paced in this episode. The end of the previous episode had it look like as if Iori was the Scribbler, but with the way this episode used the flashback with Iori and Kyo finally gave the hints that it was Kyo. The Scribble was influenced off of the Yamanashi style—Kyo used to learn Perception Art under the Yamanashis. The base Iori used in his first year art was made from Kyo—Kyo used to be an Artist. It all clicked together for Kazuya now.

The Perception Art that was shown in this episode was epic. I still stand by my belief of Iori having the best Perception Art sequences. I just love how all artists have their own style. Iori’s style is clearly oriental/Japanese-style compared to the others. I think the writers agree with me regarding Iori since he got a second Perception Art sequence dedicated to him; he’s clearly their favorite and it shows.

However, there is still one more question that has yet to be answered: Why is Kyo so guilt-ridden? It was revealed that the car the Yamanashi couple were in did not catch on fire, so why did they die in a fire? Was it due to Kyo being stuck inside a car? We haven’t gotten to that part yet. However, whatever did happen back then caused Kyo to be so guilt-ridden that he decided to close himself off to Kazuya and Jun. He wanted to be a Grader to protect Kazuya and Jun, but the guilt seemed to have eaten him up as he got older to the point that he decided to avoid them. Will next week’s episode be the last? I just hope everything gets resolved by then.

I just hope everyone hugs, kiss and make up. Kazuya, Kyo and Jun deserve happiness. Jun, especially, needs that happiness as he’s the one who has been keeping the bond between them afloat the most. He’s truly the mom friend and he deserves the very best!

Opus Colors Episode 7 Review: The Harsh Art World

After Episode 4 robbed us of Iori content, the writers make up for it by giving him focus in this week’s episode. He and his Grader Takumi take the center stage by diving deeper into the pros and cons of the Perception Art world. While it does seem like smiles and rainbows, it’s not. I like that, honestly. The world of art, whether it’s visual, fine, performance, or even liberal, will always be a harsh industry. I know all too well—look at me trying to find a place in the writing world with blogging and original writing.

How was Iori as a character overall? He’s quite something, honestly. He’s smug and such, but he has all the reasons to be smug and confident. He’s an artist and he’s GOOD. Goodness, his Perception Art was AMAZING! I can see why everyone keeps hyping him up. He definitely lives up to his expectations. It’s also revealed that his inspiration of Perception Art came from Kazuya’s parents, which he saw them do their art as a kid. He was even at their funeral where he saw the mourning Kazuya as a kid. Huh, I wonder if that’s going to be a plot point in the future.

While I always liked the artsy, glamorous side of the Perception Art world, I also liked seeing the serious, critical side of it. However, I did think that the “serious” part of when the staff members criticized Iori’s exhibition due to a child being injured was going a bit over the top. Yeah, the kid almost got injured, but Iori shouldn’t have been the one to be blamed on. When he opened up his studio for kids’ safety, he got criticized again. Sheesh, nobody’s ever happy here. Let him have some fun!

Takumi was a bit one-note in the beginning with his obsession tendencies towards Iori. He has strong yandere vibes. He’s growly whenever some guy approaches Iori. Relax, no one’s going to steal your man. While Iori doesn’t seem to fully reciprocate his feelings, he keeps him around because of convenience. It’s revealed that the Yura family is super rich; they’re known in the art industry as connoisseurs of sorts. Takumi even invests his own personal money into sponsoring Iori as his own personal artist. That’s some obsession right there.

This episode is also REALLY big on the Kazukyo ship. Like, the first part of the episode was just them going on a “date” to see Iori’s exhibit and then he got jealous that Kazuya spent time with Iori. He’s folding for Kazuya soon. I can feel it.

There is a big reveal in this episode: Iori is NOT the Scribbler! I knew it! He was just a red herring! I’m still on the boat of Kyo being the Scribbler and it’s heavily hinted towards the end! Kazuya tells Kyo about his search for the Scribbler and Kyo’s only response was gaping. He’s the one! He’s it!

I wonder where’s the story going from here? There’s five episode left. What’s going to happen now that Iori is not the Scribbler? How will Kyo reveal that he is the Scribbler and how will Kazuya respond? I just hope there won’t be angst.

Opus Colors Episode 3 Review: I Said I Came Here For The Art

I said I came here for the art. I was not disappointed. While this is mainly an episode where Kazuya and Kyo are finally resonating, it’s an episode where the premise of Perception art is finally utilized again. They finally make something together and it’s beautiful.

Kazuya finally learns that he cannot be thinking about himself when paired with Kyo. While he wasn’t entirely selfish, his mindset was mainly he wants to work with Kyo but Kyo never likes any of his ideas. It’s not his fault, honestly. Kyo’s topic was broad and vague. He’s always trying to get Kyo to notice him, but after a talk with Kyo’s father, he realizes that he needs to step up so that Kyo can notice his efforts, hence the creation of that beautiful work.

Two new characters are introduced in this episode. The first is the Eisen High’s director, Director Takise, Kyo’s father. As someone who was friends with Kazuya’s parents since their student days, he understands the partnership between Graders and Artists the best. In fact, of the Yamanashi and Takise couples, Mr. Takise was the only Grader, meaning Mrs. Takise is an Artist. Interesting. He’s the catalyst for Kazuya to finally understand what it is that he’s missing from his work that will make Kyo satisfied. I do like how, despite being the esteemed director, he still allows Kazuya to call him Uncle. That’s super cute. Mr. Takise seems like a nice person too. I hope he keeps showing up.

The next new character is Iori Haijima. He has been teased for the previous episodes as someone who is a skilled Artist. Today’s episode, we learn that he was once paired with Kyo back in their first years and won the contest. Given that he is someone who holds his own solo exhibitions, he is a big deal as an artist. He considers his Graders to be his femme fatales, with Kyo being his OG and Takumi Yura, his current Grader, as his new femme fatale. Iori is a very interesting character, honestly. He’s flirty and smug—even more than Sakaki. His interactions with Kyo reeks of love triangle subtext. I just hope he’s not a thorn on the side for the main duo.

Takumi Yura was shown in the previous episode as someone who’s obsessed with Iori and wanting him as an Artist for the contest. They haven’t fully interacted yet, but Takumi was glaring at him for “flirting” with Kyo. I hope he gets more focus in future episodes because he seems like a one note character for now. Speaking of which, he has the same surname as the pink-haired college student Daiki Yura. Are they brothers?

Speaking of which, in the previous episode, I mentioned that Jun and Michitaka felt like a side couple. Someone commented that they are cousins/relatives. I was writing the review in the middle of the night. I overlooked that detail. While they still give off that vibe, I’m not particularly a fan of incest ships. If that’s your cup of tea, you’re allowed to ship it. Look, I don’t care if you give me the problematic label. Read this article that I wrote on my blog about why I don’t give a f**k about your shipping morals.

Anyways, if the art was this good for the third episode, I’m curious about what sort of art quality the anime will have in future episodes. I’m ready for visual greatness.
