Intimacy
Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Setting: Newlyweds
Rating: G, despite the title.
Something was tickling her face. Kaoru wrinkled her nose, and kept her eyes firmly closed. The tickling sensation returned, along her jaw and cheek, and this time she turned her entire face into the bedding. The sound of masculine laughter made consciousness rush up all at once and Kaoru grinned into the blankets.
In three days of marriage, she had heard Kenshin laugh more than a he normally did in a month.
She peeked out of her the corner of her eye to spot her new husband laying next to her, propped on an elbow, with a tuft of his red hair grasped in his other hand, smiling at her. She loved being with him in the mornings, the quiet intimacy of seeing him with messy hair, in his sleeping clothes. “It’s time to get up, Kaoru.”
“...No.”
“You can sleep in, if you like, that you can, but this one must go start the breakfast fire.”
“No!” She hooked her leg over his own in a clever and invicinable attempt at restraint. He tickled the back of her neck with his hair and she flipped over onto her back with a huff to find him smiling broadly at her, his sweet violet eyes happy. She loved mornings.
“Your students are returning today,” he reminded her. “It wouldn’t do for them to find their teacher lazing the day away, in bed with a man.”
“No,” she said, and ran her bare foot up her husband’s calf, not as an attempt at seduction, but merely because he was hers now and she was allowed.
The corner of Kenshin’s eyes crinkled with his smile and he scooted closer to her rather than away, stroking a calloused hand up and down her arm, inside the wide sleeve of her sleeping robe. “Yes,” he argued, “now or in an hour, you must get out of bed.” Kaoru tucked her head under his chin and pressed a few small kisses to his throat, delighting in the way his adam’s apple bobbed under his lips as he swallowed. “Kaoru, it really isn’t necessary for you to wake as early as this one, that it isn’t. You are welcome to wake at your usual time, and then-”
“And miss mornings with my husband?” Kaoru pulled back to glare at him, which was perhaps less than menacing with her hair a wild mess, and her legs twined with his, and her hands caressing the generous amount of his chest that was visible through the collar of his robe. Kenshin huffed a breath that might have been a laugh or might have been surrender, leaned down, and kissed her. Kaoru melted into him, the scent and feel of him, wanting the drugging, mind-numbing sensation to keep reality beyond their bedroom door, if only for a little while…
“Ouch!” She yelped, and leapt backwards, or attempted to, but with as tangled as they were, she only succeed to dragging Kenshin with her.
“Oro!?”
“What is wrong with your face? It hurt!”
“Oh!” Kenshin blushed, color dusting both cheeks, and raised a hand to his chin, rubbing along his jawline. “This one needs to shave this morning.”
Kaoru’s eyes bulged. “You shave?” She’d never known that he shaved! After Kyoto, after Jinchuu, wouldn’t she have noticed…?
Kenshin’s eyes pressed into embarrassed crescents and he scratched the back of his head. “Well, only every few days… and it’s very light, that it is…”
She stared at his chin in fascination. There was something there… She ran a finger across his jaw, and found sharp stubble. “It’s red.”
“Err, yes?”
It was red, very, very light red, and it was nearly invisible against his skin. She stared until Kenshin began to twitch uncomfortably under her scrutiny. “Kenshin,” she said, and her voice was very serious as she cupped his slightly rough cheeks in her palms, staring deeply into the eyes of her beautiful husband.
“Yes?”
“You have to keep shaving. You cannot grow a beard.”
Kenshin coughed lightly, embarrassed. “This one does not believe that is even possible, that it isn’t.”
Kaoru watched his blushing face for another moment and felt laughter bubbling up from her stomach. She bit her lip, trying not to let it free, she didn’t want him to think that she was laughing at him, but it was too much, and soon she was laughing helplessly, hands pressed against her stomach as she howled.
Her husband watched her silently for a moment, her dear, beloved husband with the terrible handwriting, perpetually cold feet and scrubby, spotty red stubble that could never become a beard. “I’m sorry,” she gasped, “I’m not- I’m not laughing at you-” but she didn’t have the breath to explain the joy, the relief that she felt in the knowledge that she had married a man that really was just a man.  As the laughter began to fade, she pressed kisses to his face and prickly jawline.
“This one will shave this morning.”
Kaoru smiled against his warm skin. “It’s perfect, Kenshin.”

El Mago Georges from Kati Egely on Vimeo.
We aren't only created with free will, but also with responsibility. The responsibility to listen to our gut feelings, follow our intuition, the wise part of us. According to the old definition, a magician is a wise person. So we can all be magicians if we are brave enough.
