I started writing down a few points about my take on Mika’s characterization for future reference, because I figured I’d want to touch on this when I eventually write a postmortem for Bloodline. But it ended up running away from me so here’s 1300 words of meta on what I feel are the three key components of his personality in the way I write him for the DCU because maybe if we get this out of my system now, I’ll be able to focus on actual plot things for the postmortem instead of rehashing all of this lmao we can dream right??

1. Soft Chameleon With A Side Of Fuck-You:

Above all else I’ve loved developing and expanding on the softer, gentler side of Mika because of how it contrasts with his portrayal in the canon. I suppose you could interpret it as me completely mischaracterizing him and idgaf honestly. To me, that soft side of him co-exists with the hardened “worksona” he utilizes while he’s doing his job. In the canon, we only see him from Larten and Darren’s perspective. Of course he doesn’t interact with them the same way as he does with Gracie and Kurda, or even Arrow and Paris. Mika himself didn’t even know that side of him existed until Gracie accidentally appeared in his life. But what I think is important is that he never questioned it. He just rolled with it. And he takes her just as seriously as he takes his duty to the clan. He represses a lot of things, feelings-wise (we’ll get to that later) but never once does he shy away from being soft for his daughter. Not even in the public eye. This man will be braiding Gracie’s hair in the Hall of Princes one second, and the next second he’ll kick a crusty senior General out of a meeting just for coughing too loud. So we see him shifting frequently back between Soft-Dad-Mode and the grittier Fuck-You-I’m-Mika-Ver-Leth mindset required to function as a Prince. Both are authentic and necessary; he’s not two-faced. He’s just a guy with a lot going on and he’s trying his best. And although my take on Mika is a hell of a stretch from the canon, I feel his on-the-fly adaptability is pretty on track. Again, more so in the SLC. Because in the DSS, admittedly he’s more of a moody jerk than anything else.

2. High-Functioning Hot Mess:

The canon alludes to Mika being a very guarded individual, and this is another thing I expand on in a really big way. He has this line in Brothers To The Death where he tells Larten “You haven’t learned to mask your emotions as artfully as I have.” And I’ve read into that very deeply. Mika is known in the SLC for being very cool-headed and it’s pretty clear he was written that way to contrast Larten’s impulsivity. And I’m loyal to that aspect in my portrayal of Mika. He has a long fuse and a lot of chill for someone in such a high-stress position. However, I added another layer under the surface that was totally my own invention. To put it vaguely: The internal struggle that goes in to maintaining that image in the public eye. The invisible effort it takes for him to make his life look effortless. To put it much more specifically: The anxiety. The need to be in control in order to function. The feeling that no matter what he does, it’s never enough, despite the fact that he’s untouchable, at the absolute top of his game. The constant repressing of 90% of his emotions because y’know, why work through it when you can bottle it up, carry it around, and offload it via panic attack every six months? One of the most interesting things about him is the way the self-doubt (almost self-loathing at times) coexists with his outward confidence (almost arrogance at times). He simultaneously thinks he could fight god, or Desmond Tiny, and win. And he’s also not entirely convinced he’s worthy of love. (Remember when Renley calls him out about this? That was fun for me). At first I didn’t mean to dig into darker tunnels of Mika’s psyche to the extent I did. It started small - a brief comment on him experiencing some degree of anxiety in a situation out of his control. In the canon he just seemed to coast through life so easily, compared to most of the other characters in SLC. Like, they call him an underdog literally one time, then he wins the howling thing and it seems to be smooth sailing from him there on out. But I don’t buy it - no one achieves that much without losing something along the way. And the amount of pressure and responsibility on this guy at any given time?! I don’t believe for a second that the life of a Vampire Prince isn’t mentally gruelling and painfully isolating at times. And it’s been interesting exploring this through Mika’s personal lens. Bonus point which could easily be its own post but I’ll touch on it briefly. The psychological toll of his position directly ties into why I characterize Mika being more of a laid-back, less-strict parent than Kurda. Their respective characterization in the canon would imply the opposite, based on how both Mika and Kurda react to Darren. And I get that. But Gracie is not Darren. And Mika doesn’t have it in him to spend all day being the hard-ass we see in canon, and then have to be a parental Bad Cop on top of that. Important distinction: Mika’s psychological need to be in control does not extend to Gracie. This is why he’s perfectly happy to sit back and let her do her thing, as long as she’s safe.

3. Part-Time Goofball, Hours Subject To Change Without Notice:

The “fun side” I added to my take on Mika’s characterization is definitely the biggest departure from canon. There’s no evidence that aludes to Mika having much by the way of a sense of humour. But the way I see it, it fits with the overarching theme that’s present in all three aspects I’m covering here: he picks and chooses what he wants you to see because that’s just how he operates. Mika’s sense of is humour very subtle - carried by dry wit, clever snark, and heaps of sarcasm. There’s also a layer of self-deprecation in there (refer to second point). And of course, he’s sassy as all fuck. But when it all comes down to it, in his heart of hearts he’s still just as much of a rowdy frat bro as Arrow or Vancha. I very much headcanon that they love to let loose with the rest of the clan - when it’s appropriate for them to do so. Think Mika and Arrow playing beer pong at the Festival while Vancha passes around a blunt - that’s the vibe I’m going for. All three of them take their jobs very seriously (as they should) but I feel Mika takes it the most seriously. After all, he set his goals very early in life so of course he puts his entire heart and soul into it every waking moment. He can be laughing at something stupid with Arrow in the Hall of Princes between meetings one minute, and then snapping back to business mode as soon as someone else walks in. You have to be on a certain level with Mika for him to joke with you - and you have to pay attention, otherwise it’ll go over your head. The strongest interpersonal bonds in his life are with Kurda, Arrow, and Gracie. I.e: romance, friendship, and family. All three bring out a different version of Mika’s brand of humour. With Kurda it’s a lot of flirting and teasing, rooted in their contrasting personalities and given life by their mutual head-over-heels infatuation. Then there’s Arrow, the Patrick to Mika’s Spongebob if you will. I like this metaphor and I will not be taking criticism. Separately, they’re elite individuals. But together, they’re two halves of a whole idiot. (An elite idiot, mind you). Arrow’s sense of humour isn’t as sophisticated as Mika’s, but as I’ve mentioned, Mika is adaptable and they can cheer each other up even on the darkest days. Finally there’s Gracie - because nobody keeps you humble like your own kid. Out of the small handful of people who aren’t afraid to roast Mika, Gracie is the least afraid. (And he welcomes it, cause he thinks she’s fucking hilarious and he’s right).

Seth Gecko

First impression: I’d never seen the movie okay. I didn’t know what to expect from him at all!! I honestly wasn’t sure I even liked him that much until like that scene where he punches out Chet at the Twister.

Impression now: THE TRASHY AF LOVE OF MY LIFE. I have so many feelings about Seth Gecko it’d be impossible to list them all here. I think about him nearly every damn day.

Favorite moment: I think it’d have to be in s3 when he’s trying to stop Kate from going after Amaru with the shotgun and how he’s like “easy, easy” at her for getting too riled up. XD SHE IS RUNNING HEADFIRST INTO DANGER ALREADY AND HE IS TRYING TO PROTECT HER. But there’s honestly so many favorite moments. But also jfc that shotgun... all the phallic symbolism there. 👀

Idea for a story: SO MANY IDEAS. THEY JUST NEVER STOP. My latest one is this one where he and Richie are both coyote shifters. And I’ve had this idea for YEARS, but I’m just starting to explore it now.

Unpopular opinion: Seth is not the smooth mfer everyone thinks he is. He is awkward and dorky af and just really great at hiding that. XD And he is not adventurous in bed. AT ALL. HE DOES NOT WANT ANYTHING UP HIS ASS ALRIGHT. Unless, of course, if Kate is suggesting it…

Favorite relationship: SethKate obviously. :P

Favorite headcanon: SETH HAS A PRAISE KINK. LBR HE LOVES TO BE BOSSED AROUND BY KATE. HE JUST WANTS TO DO A GOOD JOB.

Kate Fuller

First impression: MY SUN AND STARS. I thought she was precious. Although maybe that was me projecting on Madie because I loved her as Ethel in Shameless so much. I really only watched FDTD because of her.

Impression now: MY SUN AND STARS. I LOVE THIS GIRL SO MUCH. UGH. JUST HER HEART. HER GOODNESS. HOW PROACTIVE OF A CHARACTER SHE IS. HOW SHE’S ALWAYS LIGHTING A FIRE UNDER ALL THE BOYS’ ASSES BECAUSE WITHOUT HER NOTHING WOULD EVER GET DONE. She’s definitely one of my favorite characters of all time now. I love that she’s not afraid to go toe-to-toe with some supernatural assholes (and a couple of regular ones too) even though she is TINY. She is cute, but she WILL FIGHT. I just love that about her so much. And how every action of hers comes from a place of love. But she’s not perfect, and she may be good, but she is NOT nice and WILL ABOSLUTELY WRECK YOU.

Favorite moment: There are so many, honestly. idk how to pick. But I love during the Mexican Honeymoon how she’s giving Seth so much shit for bungling the bank heist and then making excuses later. She’s not just gonna sit and take it okay. She’s giving him an earful about it and he’s gonna LISTEN DAMMIT.

Idea for a story: Well, I already mentioned the coyote shifters thing… There’s also the Yellowstone road trip thing I’ve been working on. And then the two alternate scenarios of Seth running into her at Jed’s that @yossariandawn persuaded me to write that we were coming up with ideas for yesterday. XD So I started working on a couple little ficlets for that. One where Kate is shackled, and another where Seth walks in on Richie and Kate holding hands during the blood bond, and it’s an awkward little parallel to the Twister “you show me yours, I’ll show you mine” bit. XD

Unpopular opinion: idk that this is an unpopular opinion necessarily, but some people don’t like to acknowledge or just don’t realize how much of a shit stirrer she really is!!

Favorite relationship: Sethkate.

Favorite headcanon: Okay, so I’ve definitely mentioned before that I headcanon that she is a Cancer sign. But after learning more about astrology, I think she’s definitely also an Aries moon. She can be really impulsive when she’s emotional, and she’s also got an anger streak lbr!!

Arthur Morgan

First impression: SERIAL KILLER!! Literally the first video I saw of someone playing him he was running people over in Saint Denis with his horse and racking up a huge bounty on his head. XD I really thought this game was just Grand Theft Horsey. :P

Impression now: LISTEN. I AM STILL CRYING OVER HIM THREE YEARS LATER OKAY LEAVE ME ALONE. XD

Favorite moment: There’s lots, but one of my favorites is in this scene with his friend and French artist Charles Châtenay where he’s watching a brawl break out at an art gallery over some risqué art that Charles painted. Charles gets a beating and Arthur is just laughing at him and being entertained by it all. XD I LOVE HIS LAUGH THERE SO MUCH. ONE OF THE FEW TIMES HE ACTUALLY ENJOYS HIMSELF. ARTHUR DESERVED HAPPINESS.

Idea for a story: I did have an idea for a kind of time travel/fix-it fic that is also an Arthur/OFC story… I probably won’t write it now, but it’s like after his death in the game he time travels to the present day because of this talisman he got from a Native American chief and he meets a woman named Emma and they fall in love and get married and are expecting their first kid. BUT THEN. EMMA GETS SENT BACK IN TIME TO BEFORE THE BLACKWATER CATASTROPHE. AND PAST ARTHUR DOESN’T KNOW HER. BUT HE FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER ALL OVER AGAIN. lmfao it’s complicated which is why I never actually wrote it because I couldn’t figure out how to tell that story… But it was supposed to be like Outlander in reverse kinda...

Unpopular opinion: MARY LINTON IS TOXIC AF AND ARTHUR DESERVED BETTER

Favorite relationship: I think that has to go to Arthur & Hosea. THAT’S HIS REAL DAD OKAY. IDGAF. I just love how patient he is with Arthur, even if he teases him sometimes. It’s always really affectionate and playful. And I didn’t really ship Arthur with anyone in the game, but if I did it would’ve been with Charlotte!! I loved their scenes so much!!

Favorite headcanon: He didn’t actually die… and he lived out his days to the age of 100+. He was around for the invention of microwaves and television and pop music. He and Jack hung out sometimes and they celebrated the release of Jack’s first novel together. lmfao

Daryl Dixon

First impression: Umm I think I thought he was kinda cute. XD Him throwing the squirrels at Rick was funny too.

Impression now: idk I stopped watching that show years ago. But when I quit the series, he and Beth were my everything so I know I had a lot of feelings about him.

Favorite moment: The white trash brunch and “Oh” scenes. He was just so soft and open with Beth. He was TRYING.

Idea for a story: I don’t write for that fandom anymore and never will again. But I did have a couple stories in the works though. One was a ZA fic where he and Beth are married with a newborn at the start of the apocalypse and it just follows the first few episodes with some changes because it’s also set a few years later. And another story I had was a singer!Beth au where she’s just getting famous and is dating Daryl and they have to keep their relationship a secret. And there were definitely fights with paparazzi planned. lol And a lot of sneaking around.

Unpopular opinion: I can’t think of anything.

Favorite relationship: Bethyl. There was a quote by NR where he said something like when Daryl loves, it’s for life? I still maintain that there will never be anyone else. Even if there is later in the show, there isn’t. lol

Favorite headcanon: That Merle is actually his biological father... lol

Drunj!Der Yells About Outlander

Thoughts on Ep. 503

Oh, Outlander. Le sigh.

On one hand, this episode gave me everything I’ve been wanting for 84 years a long time: Jamie and Claire, together, working as a team as the center of the episode. On the other hand, this very much did *not* feel like an episode of Outlander.

Bottle episodes are fine. The Garrison Commander, The Wedding and A. Malcolm were all basically bottle episodes. Two of those three are a couple of my favorite episodes of the whole series. This episode was like if the times the show decided to cosplay as a different genre (horror this time, rather than the political drama and military drama we’ve seen them attempt in the past) was dialed up to the point it no longer resembled an episode of the same show. From the music to the directing to p much everything.

This episode made me think that like if Outlander was a Venn diagram it would have Claire and Jamie working together as a team, them in the bulk of the episode, and a Good Episode™ of Outlander. You could have two but never all three.

(Also I hate horror movies. They’re just aggressively not jam.)

Ok but now that Marsali is Claire’s apprentice, can we have her and Fergus find out about time travel this season? Because in the books it’s like vaguely implied in MOBY but we never actually get to see that convo.

Also, yes, Marsali, Boston’s pretty rad. Not that I’m biased or anything. In addition to apparently “discovering” penicillin, we also invented Amurrica.

Shorter Claire’s VO: Idgaf about the timeline anymore. Don’t see how that can go wrong.

So was the blurry af title card Marsali practicing suturing? Why did they shoot it like that. It looks more like how they shot Mr. Beardsley’s POV rather than through the moldy bread covers or whatever it was through.

That whole intro part felt like it came from a different episode and was just tacked on to remind us that mold shenanigans are still a thing that is happening.

I do love Marsali, and her with Claire, though, but still.

SUPER SOFT FRASER FACE TOUCHING!

Ok so Jamie is only gonna do another cross burning when he calls his dudes to fight the English, right? Because he did the whole big thing like “I won’t light the flaming dildo again until we’re going to war” and now he’s raising the militia but not doing the fire part when they showed the new wicker dildo right there up high on the Ridge. So like, because that whole bit was about the men being loyal to him, he’s only gonna light it for freedom, right?

FLAMING DILDO OF FREEDOM

So Fergus using Claire’s list of medical tips as his note for the printer is def not going to come back to bite anyone in the ass. Nope. Def not.

Also I love that the whisky thing is Fergus’ thing in the show.

TEAM KEEP GIVING FERGUS AND MARSALI STUFF TO DO BECAUSE I LIKE THEM AND THE BOOKS FORGOT ABOUT THEM.

How many pigs is Marsali gonna butcher to practice her skillz? Also is Deadguy McWhatshisface still in the cellar somewhere?

Mr. Trouble! I love Germain a lot and would love more of him with Grannie and Grandda, pls and thx.

Also, would *love* some Bree and Marsali time. Maybe next episode while the bros are in Brownsville and they’re at the Ridge by themselves? Pretty please?

Ah yes, plantation jokes. In the time when those exist. And you’ve stayed at one. Come on, Bree.

Oh look, Jamie and Claire not keeping secrets from each other. Good. Well done, kids.

But they’re keeping it from Bree. Who, as the grown-ass woman at the center of the Bonnet bullshit, fucking deserves to know. So fuck y’all for not telling her.

She knows, I know that, but they think she doesn’t sooo, do better.

Lots of callback references from Jamie this season. The thing about his scars last week, Black Jack, the brand Claire cut off and his dad’s stroke this week. Ngl, the show is so different now that those references don’t even seem like they’re from the same series.

Gonna take this twin bit as an opportunity to remind everyone to watch Orphan Black.

Kezzie leaves-his-pants-for-the-kittens Beardsley, too good for this world. Too pure.

You come across a creepy fucking cabin in the woods, that you know is the home of a physically abusive fuckwad, and you immediately split up? Claire. Girl. You’ve seen horror movies.

OMG HAI CATS! I GOT ALL EXCITED THAT ADSO MIGHT BE ONE OF THE PANTS!KITTENS BUT ALAS. SOON. SOON, MY FLOOFER.

I fucking hate jump scares. Like I knew her face was gonna be in the window when Jamie turned back around, because this episode is the most trope-y horror short ever, but still. I fucking do not like horror movies, y’all, and jump scares are cheap.

Jamie on the other hand has never seen a horror movie and clearly doesn’t know that you DO NOT GO INTO THE CREEPY CABIN WITH THE CREEPY JUMP SCARE LADY.

Omfg with the banging door, it’s like they were like ok let’s read Making Horror Movies for Dummies and then put in ALL THE TROPES.

Also, this might be the one instance where the book name was better. Why the fuck would you name the goat Billy when Hiram is *clearly* a superior goat name.

CLAIRE. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING UPSTAIRS. YOU ARE THE GIRL WHO GETS KILLED FIRST IN THE HORROR MOVIE. WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS. STOP BEING A DUMBASS.

Like we finally get an episode that is centered on Jamie and Claire. Together. Team Fraser. And it’s this nonsense.

I cannot with this show, tbh.

“Poor men bleed for rich men’s gold.” Two hundred and fifty fucking years later and it’s still true, Mrs. Findlay.

Did they borrow zombie noises from The Walking Dead for this episode? I swear to fuck every time Mr. Beardsley makes a noise I’m like uhhh, what show am I watching again?

The subtitles spell Baltimore “Baltimoe” and now I have Another Op’nin’, Another Show from Kiss Me, Kate stuck in my head.

Is it too much to ask that the show find some way to demonstrate the past being The Worst™ that isn’t women and children getting abused or raped or murdered by shitty men? We already know men are shitty. Men are still shitty.

Like seriously, who the fuck does Mr. Beardsley think he is, murdering all his wives for not having babies, Henry VIII?!
