Black Nerd Problems got the opportunity to converse with Danny Lore the writer of the upcoming comic Queen of Bad Dreams. This comic will explore aspects of the “Dream World” with the protagonist Daher, an inspector judge who calls the shots. When entities of the dream world called figments escape their realm and slip into ours it is Daher’s job to figure out whether they should let them stay or insert them back into the dream world. This interview will delve into this created world in deeper detail and also  touch upon representation in terms of queerness, race and gender identity. How does all of that tell us about our movements surrounding the things that hinder us, that enlighten us? Lore expands on Queen of Dreams, and what to think about as we move towards our own.
Black Nerd Problems: Danny, I noticed that you worked at Forbidden Planet! Often times I’ve seen like comic nerds call places like Forbidden Planet a safe haven after physically/emotionally exhausting workloads. Looking back how has this world prepared you for experiences that you’ve have had with other creatives like on The Wilds? And now?
Danny Lore: I’ve worked at Forbidden Planet for years, and it is a second home to me. I’ve met some of my closest friends in the comics community in that store, be it other employees or customers. Being surrounded by comics like that means I’ve spent a lot of time not just talking about comics, but taking the time to really think about why I love comic books. Having the access to read all these projects, and then being able to analyze what I liked and didn’t like about them with other people who are passionate, both as readers and creators, has done so much for me as a writer.
I’ve learned a lot just being in conversation with some of the coolest creators in the game right now- Vita Ayala, Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss to name a few- as we talked ideas, craft, and just survived retail day to day. It also helped me when it came to the little technical things about scripting for artists and editors that I might not have learned if it wasn’t for their help.
Tumblr media
BNP: You’re a brand new comic book writer on a brand new series, being put out in the world by a newish comic book publisher (Congrats on three years Vault Comics!) who is this book for? Who, in your opinion will love it? Who will see themselves in it?
DL: Queen of Bad Dreams is for the kind of reader who wants a world that is vibrant, lively, and makes them sit back and wonder what they’d bring to it. It’s the non-horror version of watching Nightmare on Elm Street– one of the main things that make Freddy scary isn’t the specific deaths in the films, but thinking about what your nightmares would be. I wanted to create a world the reader can interact with, both on an emotional and philosophical level.
Queen is also for readers who feel frustrated with the world outside their door. It’s for the readers plagued with doubt and anger because so many people and systems want to keep them from achieving their dreams. Readers who are looking for a way out- both with escapism, because Dearbhla and Jordi have designed a killer world, and in reality.

No Sabes Nada #76 – El Reemplazante y Sebastián Ayala

THE WATER RITUALS
Tumblr media
In the Spanish city of Vitoria, Inspector Unai López de Ayala, known as Kraken, gets a double whammy from his lover and boss, Deputy Superintendent Alba Díaz de Salvatierra: She’s pregnant, and the father might not be him but her dead husband, Nancho, a serial killer. His pursuit of Nancho in The Silence of the White City (2020) left Kraken with serious head injuries that have impaired his ability to speak. Though he narrates in a gritty first person, he regularly visits a speech therapist and rarely talks to others, preferring to conduct conversations in the texts peppered throughout. A message from Kraken’s partner, Estíbaliz, brings more bad news: Kraken’s first girlfriend, graphic novelist Ana Belén Liaño, has been murdered. Intermittent flashbacks to 1992 present their idyllic teen romance and provide an intriguing counterpoint to the main noir narrative. Sáenz’s large, boldly painted canvas includes a plague of inexplicable suicides by young women. Kraken’s collaboration with his own group of colorful irregulars—hacker extraordinaire Golden Girl; Tasio Ortiz de Zárate, long imprisoned as a serial killer but exonerated; street-wise skater MatuSalem; and others—is this story’s most enjoyable feature. The murder of one of Kraken’s old friends indicates both that he’s dealing with a serial killer and that he might be the killer’s focus.

The Silence Of The White City by Eva García Sáenz
Tumblr media
The Silence Of The White City by Eva García Sáenz, translated by Nick Caistor, Vintage Crime / Black Lizard 2020
In August 2020 I spotted a review for this novel by "Rough Justice" in Crime Fiction Lover which had been shared onto the Crime Fiction In Translation Facebook group. I'd promised myself I would buy the book as soon as I saw it on sale in a local bookshop. The plot seemed of interest and set in the Basque County it was a new location for me. Seeing a Netflix recommendation for a film of the same name further generated my intrigue and having failed to find the book locally, I ensured it was top of my Christmas list.
Three days after unwrapping it I have read from start to end and since then watched the movie on Netflix! Please don't be tempted to rush to watch the movie though until after you have read the book. Reasons for this are given in my final paragraph.
It may be late December but this is one of my favourite novels of the year and it is precisely one superb example of why I enjoy international crime fiction so much. Not only have I enjoyed a thrilling and unpredictable crime novel with a compelling back story and credible lead character, but I have also been given a fantastic insight into the history, geography, culture, and food of the Álava province of Spain.
Eva García Sáenz de Urturi is a very successful author in her native Spain and her novels are also very popular in Latin America. The Silence Of The White City is set in the historic city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and is the first of the White City triology featuring Unai López de Ayala, known as Kraken. The translation by Nick Caistor, a past winner of the Valle-Inclán Prize for translation who has translated novels by the likes of Juan Marsé, Eduardo Mendoza, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and Roberto Arlt is flawless. The Basque flavour is retained with use of a few words such as Cuadrilla which refers to a group of friends, the names of festivals and some appetising dishes. Just the kind of things I like to Google between chapters!
Inspired to join the police force after Vitoria is terrorised by a series of ritualistic murders twenty years earlier, Kraken is charged with investigating a new set of double murders using almost exactly the same modus operandi. A famous archeologist Tasio Ortiz de Zarate was convicted of the original murders after being arrested by his twin brother Ignacio, who was at the time a police inspector. Given the former is still incarcerated, Kraken and his colleague Estíbaliz have to discover if these are copy-cat killings or if the wrong man was convicted.
Tumblr media
The investigation swings through a range of suspects and motives, while we read about the old town of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the regular festivals that see the killer strike, the surrounding countryside including many abandoned villages. Mystery surrounds the relationship between the Ortiz de Zarate twins and gradually we learn secrets that have never previously been revealed.
The story has a very contemporary feel where mysterious messages are left on Twitter for Kraken apparently by the imprisoned Tasio leading to concerns that he is being unduly mislead by a convicted murderer. Competing media outlets increase the pressure on the police investigation, particularly upon the new deputy Superintendent; while the unknown perpetrator is able to keep one step ahead. In a parallel story we also have a historical glimpse into high society with the interaction between the rich bride to be of a successful industrialist and her doctor from a humble background. Gradually we learn the significance of this with a startling revelation.
This is just the kind of rich novel that I enjoy, with surprises and twists that keep you turning the pages. Kraken is an appealing main pratagonist with a tragic recent history, while there is scope for more focus on Estíbaliz in subsequent stories.
I believe this novel has perhaps not received the attention it merits in the UK, it may have suffered from not getting the correct distribution channels to appear wider in British retail book stores (prices on the rear appear only in US and Canadian currency) and has missed the benefit of a good publicist. This is strange as Vintage Crime /Black Lizard have successfully promoted Henning Mankel, Jo Nesbø et al. Rest assured I've discovered many great authors this year and Eva García Sáenz is certainly up with the best of them. "The Water Rituals" , the second book in the Inspector Unai Lopez de Ayala series comes out at the end of March 2021. I'd urge you to read "The Silence Of The White City" as soon as possible get up to speed before then.
Tumblr media
Just a final word, while the book is a whodunnit, this is not the case for the movie shown on Netflix which is more of a "hedunnit". Therefore I would strongly urge you to read the novel before watching the film which reveals so much from outset and misses lots of the charm of the book. It also features an implausible chase over the Cathedral roof which does not occur in the novel. While it is worth watching afterwards, a series would have better captured the detail, feel and cultural nuances of the novel.

Fabien Borgondo - Hofborg Properties - Scammer
I wouldn’t reach out to Hofborg Properties. Though they have cheap listings how they handle things is abysmal. They have the nerve to charge a brokers fee and won’t meet you to show you the apartment OR at the very least.
They are very unprofessional and I had an unpleasant experience with Hofborg Properties as they were brought in by a corrupt Board to cover up their dirty work. Despite numerous complaints from Customers and tenants, help was limited at best
to be very careful if you work with this company. They don't always give you all the information that you need. I was in contact with Fabien Borgondo and I cannot recommend him.
I would like everyone to be aware that Fabien Borgondo is a scammer and would want to prevent anyone else from being cheated by this fraud
Here are a few other negative reviews from other customers.
Tumblr media
Adam Marvin: Do not rent with this Scammer Fabien Borgondo. They are unprofessional and have abusive billing practices. I signed an addendum to my lease lowering my move-out payment by $1000. After I moved out, the $1000 reduction was not included in the move-out bill. They said that the lease addendum was rejected. They said it "wasn't approved by corporate" even though it was signed by both the property manager, and myself. After speaking with both their central billing office and the property about 5 times each, they would not change the bill. Neither the central billing office nor the property claimed to have the authority to change it. I would have taken them to small claims court, but I moved out of the area. These criminals were going to send it to collections. Do not rent with them. You will lose your money, your time, and your patience.
Athena James: It is no coincidence that the only good reviews about this Scammer Fabien Borgondo are from his employees. This company took control of a senior building my mother resides in. They immediately raised her rent to more than they advertise remodeled units. A 48% increase if he did not sign a year lease or 28%=$200 increase if he did agree to lease. My mother called the manager asking if they would bring the lease to her to sign as he is on oxygen and unable to walk to the office. They refused. I wrote a letter which they ignored. My mother's health has been negatively impacted by the severe stress they have caused. Moving is not an option for her. We don't know how long he has to live. Hofborg Properties does not care about its residents at all!! DISGRACEFUL!!
Amanda Grey: Fabien Borgondo is a Fraud. This has been my worst experience with an apartment company. I lived in this apartment for two years, the first year being under a different company. Once the company changed to Hofbrog Properties, the experience was not pleasant. Now, having moved out, we haven't been able to get in touch with this company after calling several times to management. We've called customer care, still no response. I am very displeased with the lack of communication. I have paid my rent on time every month, yet no one can return my calls or emails now that I'm no longer leasing with them. Someone replied back to an email, saying someone would get back to us, yet they never did. It's disrespectful and I wouldn't recommend anyone stay with this company. I would prefer the company not to respond to my review. If you would like to respond look up my name and give me a call. Thank you. Please take some action against this cheat Fabien Borgondo.
Daniela Mindtle: Hofborg Properties is the worst company I have ever dealt with, Specially Fabien Borgndo the Scammer. They have horrible customer service, staff are uneducated and have little knowledge of their job. I am owed money from this company that I should have gotten in November and it is now February and I have received nothing. They will tell you they will follow up with you and write your name and number down but nobody ever gets back to you trust me! This company is greedy they have no problem going after you when they want your money but have no problem ignoring you when they owe you money. I would never rent from this company nor would I let them run your property. Horribly ran the company.
Mellisa Berger: It's been 8 weeks and Fabien Borgondo still hasn't given me my security deposit back, despite the fact that I received a move out a statement that I would get refunded in full. It's very inconsiderate to do this to tenants during a moving period, especially considering how high moving expenses can run. All in all im very disappointed I do not recommend Hofborg Properties to anyone.
Racheal Marleen: Horrible company! I have attempted to contact them numerous times with absolutely no response. I would check into the property management before renting an apartment- and I suggest you stay away from ANY AND ALL Hofbrog Properties owned apartments. i Would Really Like to report this scammer Fabien Borgondo to The Legal authorities in order to make them take some action
Derek George: So far since this Fraud Fabien Borgondo has bought the property it has been a complete disaster. They don't know how to maintain the pool properly. Tenants including my kids had chemical dermatitis due to acid buildup in the pool. They weren't really going to do anything about it. We called the health inspector and had it shut down. A week later they still can't get it right. How about hiring a pool specialist. I know of a dozen people that have already moved out due to how poor this company is run.
Jennifer Peterson: MOVE IN WITH EXTREME CAUTION AND RISK, THIS SHOULD BE YOUR ONLY AND LAST OPTION!! If I could give a negative star rating, there would not be enough room. FABIEN BORGONGO IS A CHEAT & SCAMMER. Please be Careful of such cheats.
Nayelli De Cruz: I would give Hofborg Properties 0 stars I have called multiple times to complain and no one answers the call. I had the worse experience with this new company that took over the apartment I lived in. I just finalized my contract and there trying to bill me for things I asked their staff before turning in my keys. The manager Fabien Borgondo at this location humiliated me and argued with me with false information their staff provided. he did not care I'm pregnant and was just going on making look stupid. I will just say do not rent at any locations owned by this company that does not care or bother to train their managers and staff properly.
Mellisa Ayala: BY FAR THE WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH, I FEEL LIKE I'M IN A PROJECT BUILDING, THE STAFF IS NON RESPONSIVE, I HAVE HAD ISSUES FROM THE DAY I MOVED IN UP UNTIL NOW. NOTHING BUT ISSUE AFTER ISSUE WITH THE APARTMENT, FROM BLACK MOLD, TO NO HVAC FILTER, TO DIRTY AND BROKEN KITCHEN COUNTER TOPS AND CABINETS, PEELING TILES IN THE BATHROOM, DRAINING ISSUES, HOT WATER HEATER ISSUES, REPAIRS NOT DONE PROPERLY, NO CLOSET DOORS, BY FAR DISGUSTING. I HAVE EMAILED A BOOK OF TIMELINE EVENTS WITH PHOTOS AND VIDEO TO HEIDI TROTTER STILL HAVE NOT HEARD BACK, BUT I WILL NOT PAY ANOTHER DIME UNTIL SOMEONE CONTACTS ME AND GETS THE ISSUES RECTIFIED. BEWARE OF SCAMMERS LIKE FABIEN BORGONDO WHILE PURCHASING A PROPERTY!!
These are just a few angry people who wanted to complain against this cheat! please read these comments and be cautious while dealing in properties so that you avoid this scammmer Fabien Borgondo and other such cheats like him.
