Ok. Assicurazione. Fatto in internet in 5 minuti. Sembra tutto. Ma niente sembra aiutare l’amico. No. Non basta. No problem. Internet. Prenotazione fatta. Qualcosa ancora manca. Immaginatevi cosa vuol dire comunicare in queste condizioni. Gardel aveva informazioni confuse ed era spaventato. Aveva paura. In Francia.

“They had not suffered or been ‘left behind’ in any way,” Applebaum says. Yet they happily worked for propaganda sites that targeted her family. Because she is married to a political opponent of Law and Justice, and because she writes critical pieces in the international press, Applebaum, who had faced no racism in Poland until Law and Justice came to power, was turned by the regime’s creatures into the clandestine Jewish coordinator of “anti-Polish activity”.
I once believed you should never let politics destroy a friendship. But that maxim depends on politics not turning into a danger to you and those you love. Applebaum could not stay friends with women who would not protest as the state they supported went for her and husband.
The Anglo-Saxon world is not so different from Poland and Hungary. Britain has handled Covid-19 so disastrously because only servile nobodies, willing to pretend that a no-deal Brexit would not harm the country, could gain admittance to Boris Johnson’s cabinet. As Johnson politicises the public sector, showing “fear of the liar” looks like becoming the best way to secure a job in the higher ranks of the civil service as well. American Republicans have had to go along with every lie Trump has told since his birther slur on Barack Obama. As for breaking friendships, British Jews broke theirs when they watched friends in Labour cheer on Jeremy Corbyn and thought: “If they ever came for me and my family, you would stand by, wouldn’t you?”
Careerism is too glib an explanation for selling out, and Applebaum is too good a historian to offer it. Likewise, bigotry and racial prejudice were never enough on their own to move her friends away from liberal democracy. Among Applebaum’s acquaintances is one of Orbán’s greatest cheerleaders. She has a gay son, but that has not stopped her espousing the cause of a homophobic regime. Laura Ingraham, a Fox News presenter, became one of the earliest supporters of Trump, despite the fact that she has adopted three immigrant children.
Rather than grab at standard explanations, Applebaum understands that a society based on merit may sound fine if you want to live in a country run by talented people. But what if you are not yourself talented? Since the 1950s, criticisms of meritocracy have become so commonplace they have passed into cliche. Not one I have read or indeed written stops to consider how one-party states represent the anti-meritocratic society in its purest form. Among her friends who became the servants of authoritarian movements, Applebaum sees the consequences of the lust for status among resentful men and women, who believe the old world never gave them their due.
How reputable Conservatives paved the way fo Trump and Brexit

in the heart of gritty new york, you are born in the ebb and flow of the city’s pulse in 1993, emerging from a turbulent childhood marked by the harsh realities of life. your early years were a precarious balance between navigating the chaotic streets and finding solace in the city’s underbelly. your parents, immigrants seeking a better life, struggling to make ends meet, instill in you a resilience forged in the face of adversity. a rebellious teen, you frequently clash with your father, who harbored dreams of a better life for you. enticed by the allure of rebellion, you veered off course and fell in with what he deemed the wrong crowd…
the dead hand. the rain-slicked streets of the city became your playground, and within the shadowy folds of this clandestine faction, you discovered a new kind of family. as your ties with the dead hand strengthen, the relationship with your father continues to deteriorate. the fractures deepen, reaching a critical point when your mother unexpectedly passes. in the wake of this loss, you find solace and escape in the electrifying realm of high-stakes card games at the old world casino, further widening the chasm between you and your father. the neon-lit nights become a refuge, a place where the shuffle of cards is a welcomed relief to the strained silences at home.
within the shimmering lights of the old world casino, you encounter lydia yao. your complete opposite. the magnetic pull between you was undeniable. a romance, rich and poignant, blossoms, sweeping you into a whirlwind and exchanging of vows. in lydia, you found an ethereal connection, a kind of love that etched itself into the very fabric of your being and only deepens with the arrival of your little boy, ren. with your son’s birth, a shadow lifted, and even your strained relationship with your father seemed to mend… for a time.
in the quiet recesses of your mind, the night six-year-old ren was violently snatched from you echoes, relentlessly. the details blur as grief intensifies, and the pain becomes a relentless tide. the accident, the fatal crash that spared you and lydia while claiming the life of your son — it’s a festering wound that refuses to heal. life spirals, you descend into a drunken mess, and the marriage that once held the promise of forever is now at its breaking point. a sinister suspicion gnaws at you, an eerie feeling that this tragedy was not a mere twist of fate. something doesn’t sit right, and a determination, fueled by grief and desperation, grips your splintered resolve.
as the weeks morph into months, you become a relentless hunter consumed by the quest to unveil the truth behind the accident. your father’s words about a man’s duty to protect his family haunt you each night. was it an act of retaliation? retribution for one of the many evenings at the old world casino you caught desperate patrons in your web of cards? the nights are spent in pursuit, the neon glow of the city mirroring the burning intensity of your heart as you attempt to piece together the fragments of a shattered existence.

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 22)
Tumblr media
Saint John Paul II is perhaps one of the most well-known pontiffs in recent history.
He is most remembered for his charismatic nature, his love of youth and his world travels, along with his role in the fall of communism in Europe during his 27-year papacy.
Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on 18 May 1920.
He was the youngest of three children born to Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska.
His mother died in 1929. His eldest brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932. His father, a non-commissioned army officer, died in 1941. A sister, Olga, had died before he was born.
He was baptized on 20 June 1920 in the parish church of Wadowice by Fr. Franciszek Zak, made his First Holy Communion at age 9, and was confirmed at 18.
Upon graduation from Marcin Wadowita high school in Wadowice, he enrolled in Krakow's Jagiellonian University in 1938.
The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939 and young Karol had to work in a quarry (1940-1944).
He then worked in the Solvay chemical factory to earn his living and to avoid being deported to Germany.
In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he began courses in the clandestine seminary of Krakow, run by Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha, archbishop of Krakow.
At the same time, Karol Wojtyla was one of the pioneers of the "Rhapsodic Theatre," also clandestine.
After the Second World War, he continued his studies in the major seminary of Krakow, once it had re-opened, and in the faculty of theology of the Jagiellonian University.
He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Sapieha in Krakow on 1 November 1946.
Shortly afterwards, Cardinal Sapieha sent him to Rome where he worked under the guidance of the French Dominican, Garrigou-Lagrange.
He finished his doctorate in theology in 1948 with a thesis on the subject of faith in the works of St. John of the Cross (Doctrina de fide apud Sanctum Ioannem a Cruce).
At that time, during his vacations, he exercised his pastoral ministry among the Polish immigrants of France, Belgium and Holland.
In 1948, he returned to Poland and was vicar of various parishes in Krakow as well as chaplain to university students.
This period lasted until 1951 when he again took up his studies in philosophy and theology.
In 1953, he defended a thesis on the "Evaluation of the possibility of founding a Catholic ethic on the ethical system of Max Scheler" at Lublin Catholic University.
He became professor of moral theology and social ethics in the major seminary of Krakow and in the Faculty of Theology of Lublin.
On 4 July 1958, he was appointed titular bishop of Ombi and auxiliary of Krakow by Pope Pius XII.
He was consecrated by Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak on 28 September 1958 in Wawel Cathedral, Krakow.
On 13 January 1964, he was appointed archbishop of Krakow by Pope Paul VI, who made him a cardinal on 26 June 1967 with the title of S. Cesareo in Palatio of the order of deacons, later elevated pro illa vice to the order of priests.
Besides taking part in Vatican Council II (1962-1965) where he made an important contribution to drafting the Constitution Gaudium et spes, Cardinal Wojtyla participated in all the assemblies of the Synod of Bishops.
The Cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave of 16 October 1978. He took the name of John Paul II.
On October 22, the Lord's Day, he solemnly inaugurated his Petrine ministry as the 263rd successor to the Apostle.
His pontificate, one of the longest in the history of the Church, lasted nearly 27 years.
Driven by his pastoral solicitude for all Churches and by a sense of openness and charity to the entire human race, John Paul II exercised the Petrine ministry with a tireless missionary spirit, dedicating it all his energy.
He made 104 pastoral visits outside Italy and 146 within Italy. As Bishop of Rome, he visited 317 of the city's 333 parishes.
He had more meetings than any of his predecessors with the People of God and the leaders of Nations.
More than 17,600,000 pilgrims participated in the General Audiences held on Wednesdays (more than 1160), not counting other special audiences and religious ceremonies [more than 8 million pilgrims during the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 alone], and the millions of faithful he met during pastoral visits in Italy and throughout the world.
We must also remember the numerous government personalities he encountered during 38 official visits, 738 audiences and meetings held with Heads of State, and 246 audiences and meetings with Prime Ministers.
His love for young people brought him to establish the World Youth Days.
The 19 WYDs celebrated during his pontificate brought together millions of young people from all over the world.
At the same time, his care for the family was expressed in the World Meetings of Families, which he initiated in 1994.
John Paul II successfully encouraged dialogue with the Jews and with the representatives of other religions, whom he invited several times to prayer meetings for peace, especially in Assisi.
Under his guidance, the Church prepared herself for the third millennium and celebrated the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 in accordance with the instructions given in the Apostolic Letter Tertio Millennio adveniente.
The Church then faced the new epoch, receiving his instructions in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio ineunte in which he indicated to the faithful their future path.
With the Year of the Redemption, the Marian Year and the Year of the Eucharist, he promoted the spiritual renewal of the Church.
He gave an extraordinary impetus to Canonizations and Beatifications, focusing on countless examples of holiness as an incentive for the people of our time.
He celebrated 147 beatification ceremonies during which he proclaimed 1,338 Blesseds and 51 canonizations for a total of 482 saints.
He made Thérèse of the Child Jesus a Doctor of the Church.
He considerably expanded the College of Cardinals, creating 231 Cardinals (plus one in pectore) in 9 consistories.
He also called six full meetings of the College of Cardinals.
He organized 15 Assemblies of the Synod of Bishops — six Ordinary General Assemblies (1980, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, and 2001); one Extraordinary General Assembly (1985); and eight Special Assemblies (1980,1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 (2), and 1999).
His most important Documents include 14 Encyclicals, 15 Apostolic Exhortations, 11 Apostolic Constitutions, 45 Apostolic Letters.
He promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the light of Tradition as authoritatively interpreted by the Second Vatican Council.
He also reformed the Eastern and Western Codes of Canon Law, created new Institutions, and reorganized the Roman Curia.
As a private Doctor, he also published five books of his own: "Crossing the Threshold of Hope" (October 1994), "Gift and Mystery, on the fiftieth anniversary of my ordination as priest" (November 1996), "Roman Triptych" poetic meditations (March 2003), "Arise, Let us Be Going" (May 2004) and "Memory and Identity" (February 2005).
In the light of Christ risen from the dead, on 2 April A.D. 2005, at 9:37 pm, while Saturday was drawing to a close and the Lord's Day was already beginning, the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, the Church's beloved Pastor, John Paul II, departed this world for the Father.
From that evening until April 8, date of the funeral of the late Pontiff, more than three million pilgrims came to Rome to pay homage to the mortal remains of the Pope.
Some of them queued up to 24 hours to enter St. Peter's Basilica.
On April 28, the Holy Father Benedict XVI announced that the normal five-year waiting period before beginning the cause of beatification and canonization would be waived for John Paul II.
The cause was officially opened by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, vicar general for the diocese of Rome, on 28 June 2005. He was beatified on 1 May 2011.
On 27 April 2014, he was canonized by Pope Francis during a ceremony in St. Peter's Square.
In an April 24 message sent to the Church in Poland, Pope Francis gave thanks for the 'great gift' of the new Saint, saying of John Paul II that he is grateful, "as all the members of the people of God, for his untiring service, his spiritual guidance, and for his extraordinary testimony of holiness."

Read-Alike Friday: The First Ladies
The First Ladies by Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray
The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Mary McLeod Bethune refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work. She marches on as an activist and an educator, and as her reputation grows she becomes a celebrity, revered by titans of business and recognized by U.S. Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt herself is awestruck and eager to make her acquaintance. Initially drawn together because of their shared belief in women’s rights and the power of education, Mary and Eleanor become fast friends confiding their secrets, hopes and dreams—and holding each other’s hands through tragedy and triumph.
When Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected president, the two women begin to collaborate more closely, particularly as Eleanor moves toward her own agenda separate from FDR, a consequence of the devastating discovery of her husband’s secret love affair. Eleanor becomes a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights. And when she receives threats because of her strong ties to Mary, it only fuels the women’s desire to fight together for justice and equality.
This is the story of two different, yet equally formidable, passionate, and committed women, and the way in which their singular friendship helped form the foundation for the modern civil rights movement.
The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards & Alyson Richman
1863: In a small Creole cottage in New Orleans, an ingenious young Black woman named Stella embroiders intricate maps on repurposed cloth to help enslaved men flee and join the Union Army. Bound to a man who would kill her if he knew of her clandestine activities, Stella has to hide not only her efforts but her love for William, a Black soldier and a brilliant musician.
Meanwhile, in New York City, a Jewish woman stitches a quilt for her husband, who is stationed in Louisiana with the Union Army. Between abolitionist meetings, Lily rolls bandages and crafts quilts with her sewing circle for other soldiers, too, hoping for their safe return home. But when months go by without word from her husband, Lily resolves to make the perilous journey South to search for him.
As these two women risk everything for love and freedom during the brutal Civil War, their paths converge in New Orleans, where an unexpected encounter leads them to discover that even the most delicate threads have the capacity to save us. Loosely inspired by the authors' family histories, this stunning novel will stay with readers for a long time.
The Women's March by Jennifer Chiaverini
Twenty-five-year-old Alice Paul returns to her native New Jersey after several years on the front lines of the suffrage movement in Great Britain. Weakened from imprisonment and hunger strikes, she is nevertheless determined to invigorate the stagnant suffrage movement in her homeland. Nine states have already granted women voting rights, but only a constitutional amendment will secure the vote for all. To inspire support for the campaign, Alice organizes a magnificent procession down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, the day before the inauguration of President-elect Woodrow Wilson, a firm antisuffragist.
Joining the march is thirty-nine-year-old New Yorker Maud Malone, librarian and advocate for women’s and workers’ rights. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Maud has acquired a reputation—and a criminal record—for interrupting politicians’ speeches with pointed questions they’d rather ignore.
Civil rights activist and journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett resolves that women of color must also be included in the march—and the proposed amendment. Born into slavery in Mississippi, Ida worries that white suffragists may exclude Black women if it serves their own interests. On March 3, 1913, the glorious march commences, but negligent police allow vast crowds of belligerent men to block the parade route—jeering, shouting threats, assaulting the marchers—endangering not only the success of the demonstration but the women’s very lives.
Inspired by actual events, The Women’s March offers a fascinating account of a crucial but little-remembered moment in American history, a turning point in the struggle for women’s rights.
Undiscovered Country by Kelly O'Connor McNees
In 1932, New York City, top reporter Lorena “Hick” Hickok starts each day with a front page byline―and finishes it swigging bourbon and planning her next big scoop.
But an assignment to cover FDR’s campaign―and write a feature on his wife, Eleanor―turns Hick’s hard-won independent life on its ear. Soon her work, and the secret entanglement with the new first lady, will take her from New York and Washington to Scotts Run, West Virginia, where impoverished coal miners’ families wait in fear that the New Deal’s promised hope will pass them by. Together, Eleanor and Hick imagine how the new town of Arthurdale could change the fate of hundreds of lives. But doing what is right does not come cheap, and Hick will pay in ways she never could have imagined.
Undiscovered Country artfully mixes fact and fiction to portray the intense relationship between this unlikely pair. Inspired by the historical record, including the more than three thousand letters Hick and Eleanor exchanged over a span of thirty years, McNees tells this story through Hick’s tough, tender, and unforgettable voice. A remarkable portrait of Depression-era America, this novel tells the poignant story of how a love that was forced to remain hidden nevertheless changed history.

In 1941, 19-year-old Yosef Blumenfeld and his group boarded the Darian B ship in Constanta, Rumania, along with hundreds of others as part of the clandestine immigration that took place in the years prior to Independence. All of them shared one dream - to reach Eretz Yisrael.
A pair of socks, a fiery-tempered redhead, and the passion of youth led to the unfolding of a beautiful love story.
Conditions on board weren’t ideal but Yosef doesn’t recall any immense hunger or suffering.
“Who cared?” he recalls. “We were 19, 20.”
Yosef recalls the day that he fell head over heels in love with the pretty Olga. “That day, her group from Hungary, Shomer Ha’Tzair, was on kitchen duty,” he recalls. “In charge, was a red-head with a million freckles, whose words came out faster than machine gun bullets – and all this in Hungarian. As I was a polite, gentle boy, I turned to the redhead and asked her quietly for a favor – when she used the hot water at her disposal from the kitchen to wash her own clothes, whether she could wash my socks as well.”
The Darian B eventually reached Haifa, where it was stopped by the British naval blockade. Pregnant women and the elderly were first allowed to disembark but the younger passengers were kept waiting for many days on the ship.
But they weren’t overly concerned.
“Remember, we came from a warzone,” he says. “On board, we had food. We had an accordion. We had a guitar. Our morale was high.”
Eventually, Olga and Yosef, along with everyone else on the ship were taken to Atlit Detention Camp (מחנה המעפילים), operated by the ruling British.
The men and women were separated in the camp, and the only opportunity for them to meet was on the middle path that separated the two camps, known as The Promenade.
After they were liberated, they settled in the new state of Israel where they built their home and family.
Atlit’s database – a true national treasure - contains over 130,000 names of clandestine immigrants, as well as hundreds of personal interviews. Among them is the testament of Yosef Blumenfeld, where he manages to convey his experience as a young clandestine immigrant with grace and humor.
Jewish National Fund - USA and the Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites - SPIHS has made it its mission to keep adding to this database as long as there are stories to tell.

One Hundred Years of Solitude
Tumblr media
One Hundred Years of Solitude a novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Genre –
Historical fiction, magical realism, family drama, Spanish classic
What is it about –
Published in Columbia in 1967, “One Hundred Years of Solitude” was written originally in Spanish and later translated to 37 languages. It is considered a masterpiece of literature.
The book is about the Buendia family based in an isolated town, Macondo in Latin America, that is founded by them.
The story spans across a century and takes us through seven generations of Buendias against the backdrop of a changing Macondo from a small town with a handful of settlers to a thriving centre with the arrival of railroad, cinema and immigrants.
The mad ingenuity and pioneering spirit of Jose Arcadio Buendia and the hard working, practical nature of his wife Ursula sow the seeds of the Buendia family, weaving a tale that takes the reader on a roller coaster journey filled with emotions, tragedies, fantasies, wild ambitions, foolish ventures and entrapments.
These people are purely ruled by the heart with no regard for repercussions. They loved, lost, won, lived, married, prospered, starved, interbred and guarded their ambitions and dreams with utmost tenacity and passion.
The rise and fall of the family coincide and mirror the same cycle of Macondo.

José Arcadio Buendía

Book Evaluation -
Rarely you will find a family where every member is a unique character, each has his own destiny carved by himself and the present generation being as different from the one preceding it as it is similar.
You come across gypsies with their inventions of flying carpets, false teeth and ice, murders of family members, clandestine and publicised love affairs, maniacal studies in workshops, civil wars and absconding wives and sons...the list goes on making the book a very colourful, imaginative and interesting read. History and fantasy, tragedy and comedy, love and vengeance, births and deaths, all form a part of the everyday lives of the Buendias.
Even though there are so many characters, each character is given ample time to shine and carve a niche for itself in the family as well as in the reader’s mind.
The author has written the multi generation story so effortlessly that even though the names of most of the characters are similar with even similar traits, we easily remember them distinctly.
What intrigued me the most was the title of the book. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that majority of the action happens within the family house, often described as “madhouse” by Ursula, the family matriarch. The Buendias are shown to be selfish, self-centred and oblivious to the world, except one or two of the clan. Each individual has his/her own fancies, ambitions and whims and lives without any regard for the other family members, the town or the world in general. Be it long periods spent in experiments completely ignoring his family by the family patriarch Jose Arcadio or the whimsical elopement with the gypsies by his elder son Jose Arcadio or the undertaking and losing of 32 wars by his younger brother or the innumerable years spent by the family members shut alone in the laboratory, deciphering parchments or conducting metallurgy experiments. Even the fictional town of Macondo remains in solitude for several decades as it is bordered by forests and swamps and is unknown to the outside world.
As the years pass by, we witness multiple births, deaths, weddings, affairs, love stories, financial upheavals, expeditions and business ventures in the family. The town goes through droughts and floods, immigrant settlements, worker strikes and scandals and we see Macondo change from a close-knit community of 20 initial settlers to a bustling, free spirited centre full of immigrants.
There is so much happening in the book at the same time involving so many people, it seems you are watching a reality tv show that is wild, obnoxious, bordering on the thin line between reality and fantasy, shocking, dramatic, tragic, comic, sensitive, and even uplifting at times. Every word, every line, every incident moves the story forward.
In India we call a movie with all the above elements a masala potboiler. I would like to give this book the same name, but of an epic scale.
The writing style awakens a curiosity in the reader to know the fate of every character and ultimately the fate of the family and Macondo.
Your takeaway? As in the case of every masala Hindi movie made – entertainment, entertainment, entertainment.
Favourite Lines –
I couldn’t find any striking or noteworthy line to remember from any character. The book is to be devoured as a whole. But a line by Ursula s worth mentioning here, “Life comes a full circle.”
App Mention –
I listened to the story on the Storytel app in the voice of Peter Silverleaf. His voice complements the emotion and drama in the story and makes it all the more interesting to listen.
Recommendation –
DO READ the book to lose yourself in a magical and mystical world created by the author and filled with wonderful, mad, crazy, lively and passionate characters. This piece of stunning literature will cause the lines of reality and magic to blur for you and carry you along on a journey as enthralling as the citizens of the town of Macondo experienced on the flying carpets of gypsies.
I haven’t placed the book in the MUST READ category simply because I felt this book is not everyone’s cup of tea.

As the biggest Rene (i dont remember if its è or é and dont want to mistake) simp, I beg for more of him. Please. (Reminding you of my existence)
Anything you have, I'll take it but if you dont i could re ask and send you questions
Thank you
Yes, no worries, I remember you. Please believe me when I say your interest and excitement about my not-quite OC sparks so much joy. i don't have any concrete storylines for him right now but I do have a few pieces of information about him so I'll list them below.
René is not from Mexico and only immigrated there after his formative years. As a result:
His accent is often considered strange and is a source of suspicion from the very day he enrolled into the military academy. The fact that he is in the military should've been enough of a clue that his of Mexican nationality, but it doesn't stop the questions.
To escape scrutiny, he has a pretty good fake accent and he uses it extensively before he joined Los Vaqueros (LVQ), but he doesn't use it as much anymore these days. Regardless, the desire to fit in makes him a ridiculously good actor, and this is one of the reasons why he was selected to become a member of the Mexican Special Forces.
Specialises in covert and clandestine operations. He's a bit of a chameleon and only drops the act when he is certain that he is safe. Even when in front of other members of LVQ, sometimes he puts on his metaphorical mask out of sheer instinct. It makes him approachable and gives him an easier time commanding his men. It also makes him pretty lonely even when LVQ is a whole pack at this point.
Aledolfo are two of the rare people whom he has let his guard down in front of. By the time he was given the place of third-in-command, he has worked with aledolfo for long enough that he completely trusts them. In return, aledolfo also trusts him to carry their cowboys whenever both of them are unavailable, though those times are rare occurances. The usual job distribution is:
While aledolfo charge into battle together with their teams, René is usually the one they send to gather intel and infiltrate enemy facilities beforehand. René therefore doesn't see a lot of actual action, but frankly, this is what he prefers. Since they have such a good teacher, the people under his command are also trained to be the best infiltrators in the world. It isn't without its own consequences, however:
Command once wanted to make René's team their own thing and separate them from LVQ. Alejandro gave the decision to René because he knows René is experienced enough to determine his own future, and René chose to stay. There is no other unit that will be like LVQ, and without aledolfo, things wouldn't be the same. He also knew full well that his tendency to act instead of showing genuine emotions would eventually get in the way of his command, so having aledolfo above him to keep him in check is, in his mind, the better option for both himself and his men.
At the time of the fic, I would say he's around early to mid-30s, putting him at one of the older members of LVQ. As a result of this, he views aledolfo more like his older brothers than parents, but he also understands why the younger ones refer to aledolfo as their parents.
Despite being an alpha, his scent isn't strong and literally cannot go strong even when he experiences intense emotions, to the point that strangers mistake him for a beta. He isn't emasculated easily so he usually lets people assume whatever. It allows him to do his job very well without putting a lot of attention to concealing his scent. Used to feel guilty about this natural advantage, but under Alejandro's command, he has grown to let go of this guilt and instead embraces it.
To everyone's surprise, he has a mate. Has the mating bite to confirm it, but no one has ever seen them and he rarely talks about them. And by rarely, I mean 'can be counted on one hand throughout his decade under Alejandro's command', which is pretty unusual in LVQ because people usually at least share a few details and keep updating their friends on them. The only three known aspects of René's mate are that they're an omega, they aren't Mexican or from Mexico, and is 'quite a few years' younger than René, and no one can confirm whether they are true or not. Other than that, everything else is speculation on the grapevine. On that note,
Some people once tried to get René to break his secrecy by making up the most outrageous things about he and his mate, but René ignored all those and Rodolfo rained hell on the perpetuators. Rumours still exist among LVQ about René's mate, but they're relatively mild and lighthearted compared to what caused the stir. It is now more interesting to figure out why René managed to woo an omega as a workaholic career military man.
The only people who know a tad bit more about René's mate is, naturally, aledolfo, and only because they need to make sure that René's mate won't be a liability or a foothold their enemies can grab onto. After a brief explanation, they all agree that secrecy is the best course of action with the grapevine encouraged in order to muddy the waters.
And that's what I can think of about René right now. If these spark some specific questions, feel free to send them my way. Once more, I'm glad that you like my not-quite OC.

NEW INVINCIBLE OC
Tumblr media
(Picrew as a placeholder until I can get a good photo of him)
Introducing Kyle Washington a.k.a Frontline!
Kyle was born on the 17th of March 1919, the youngest child of a small farming family in Fulton County, Kentucky. The child of two immigrants, Kyle has been said to be the perfect mix of his parents, with the confidence and wit of his Irish father and the kindness and patience of his German mother. Despite growing up in a house of little social standing, Kyle always maintained big dreams and went the extra mile in his studies. This eventually paid off when a visiting professor saw the incredible aptitude he had for mathematics, and this resulted in a miraculous scholarship to the illustrious University of Kentucky in Lexington.
While never expecting the opportunity given to him, Kyle did all he could to advance in his classes, making the Dean’s List several times across his engineering degree before graduating at the top of his class in July of 1941. It was also here that he made several left-wing friends, who did much to influence his moral worldview and encourage his desire to benefit others with his qualifications, which became his primary goal upon graduation.
That was until the Second World War came around.
Being of age and sufficient health, Kyle was soon drafted into officer training, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in April 1942. While awaiting his orders to ship to Fascist Italy, Kyle was approached by a ‘Colonel Ross Lake’, later discovered to be none other than The Immortal, who recommended he take part in a clandestine experiment: the experiment caused a radical physical transformation in Washington, turning an able-bodied farm boy into a goliath of a man endowed with superpowers. He saw his first combat in January of 1943 with the landings at Anzio Beach, not as part of a regular military unit, but as part of the world’s first superhero team: The Defenders of the Free World. Alongside legends like The Immortal and War Woman as well as other newcomers like Soprano and the original Red Rush, they fought from Italy’s blood-soaked beaches to Germany’s ruined cities, fighting soldiers and supervillains alike. Post-war, these five would also form the first iteration of the Guardians of the Globe in May 1947.
From here, Kyle, now in his hero alias of Frontline, went on to lead an illustrious 48 year long career as a professional superhero, doing everything from fighting several alien invasions to leading the first ever version of the juvenile Teen Team, which included future Guardians Green Ghost, the second Red Rush and Black Samson. Eventually, Frontline mysteriously vanished while on a mission in late 1994. He was presumed dead for almost 28 years, until a mission by Capes Inc. unearthed him imprisoned in a secret compound in the Himalayas. After a short recovery period, Frontline returned to active duty, more eager than ever to pursue justice worldwide.
Powers/Abilities:
Super Strength- Frontline’s strength is by far his most well-known attribute, simply because he is unequalled by any other human, to the point he is frequently known as ‘The Strongest Man on Earth’. In fact, his level of strength puts him above most fully matured Viltrumites, making him one of the most viable contenders against a future Viltrumite invasion.
Superhuman Durability- Frontline’s cells were made astronomically denser by the experiment that gave him his powers. He has survived gunshots, attacks from blunt and sharp weapons, electricity, both extreme heat and extreme cold, explosions, radiation, acids, and even extreme gravitational force. This ability is so strong that it borders on nigh-invulnerability.
Superhuman Stamina- Frontline’s cells are also able to respirate much faster with much less oxygen than most humans, allowing him to perform for hours on end without any visible signs of tiring.
Slowed Aging/Immortality- Frontline ages at a vastly slower rate than other humans. Despite being 103 years old at the time of writing, he maintains the appearance of a man in his late forties to early fifties.
Danger Sense- This ability is by far Frontline’s most unique superpower: his body emits a low-level extrasensory field with an estimated radius of around 25-30 meters wide, functioning as a sort of ‘sixth sense’, that allows him to remain aware of any other living beings nearby. This field is subject to the laws of physics, unable to penetrate solid surfaces. The main purpose of this field is to alert him to any imminent dangers that he would otherwise remain unaware of, making it nigh impossible to ambush him in any situation.
Master Combatant- Seasoned by decades of action and hundreds of hours of training, Frontline is one of the world’s most accomplished hand-to-hand fighters, employing a mix of American Boxing, Krav Maga, Pro Wrestling, Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Leadership/Tactician- Frontline has military training and as a result knows how to effectively co-ordinate a group of heroes in the heat of battle.
Multilingual- Frontline is fluent in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Portuguese. He is also proficient in Japanese, Arabic, Tagalog, Mandarin, Polish, Hindu, Turkish and Greek.
Equipment:
Enchanted Amazonian Shield- A gift from fellow hero War Woman, the shield that serves as Frontline’s main weapon is forged from the same material as her mace, making it nigh indestructible. It is also magically bound to him and will return to his hand with a physical cue to do so (most commonly him holding out his hand).
Super Suit: The latest of Frontline’s superhero attire is an update of one of the first designs created by renowned superhero tailor Art Rosenbaum in November 1981, designed to keep up with much of the damage that previous costumes could not. A complicated mix of spandex, Kevlar and even a non-Newtonian fluid that remains classified, the suit has withstood attacks from firearms to superhuman opponents, and even withstood the now-legendary brawl between Frontline and the mythical Ancient Greek hero Herakles. Most early iterations of his uniform had a detachable helmet or built-in cowl for him to conceal his identity, but the updated version he wears in the modern day does not, with him reasoning ‘I’m dead anyway, who’s gonna know me?’
Amazonian Dagger: Another gift from the Amazons, this eagle-headed dagger is also forged from the same material as Washington’s shield, also making it nigh indestructible. It also is strong enough to cut through Frontline’s unnaturally strong facial hair, and therefore sees more use as an implement for shaving than as a weapon.
Personality:
Kyle is a very old man, and it shows in how he interacts with others, as he acts much like you would expect your favourite grandparent to. Underneath this relaxed and affable exterior, however, lies the forceful and unwavering personality of someone who has been fighting for the past sixty or so years of his life, something that has been there since his youth. He can also be quite protective of those in his care, acting as a father figure to many heroes over his career.
Description:
Standing at 6’3 (1.9m) and weighing in at a staggering 260lbs (118kg), Frontline’s stature matches his larger than life public persona. He has golden blonde hair that is marked by wisps of grey in his old age, and his eyes are a cool earthy brown. His hair used to be slicked back with gel, but since his return has remained in a fairly long side-parted curtain (think Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy). He also grows a full beard now that he no longer a wears a helmet, which still remain fairly thin, not going past the bottom of his chin.
Inspirations:
Captain America/Steve Rogers
Tumblr media
As you’ve probably already guessed, the main inspiration behind Frontline is none other than Captain America himself. Much of what makes Kyle who he is, from growing up poor to his debut in WW2, is taken directly from Steve Rogers’ character.
Superman/Clark Kent
Tumblr media
Another big inspiration behind Kyle is DC’s Man of Tomorrow. From his background as a rural farm boy to his intense desire to use his powers for the benefit of others.
My aims with this character is to explore a facet of superhero comics that has always fascinated me: the history of the larger superhero community, as well as looking at how the rise of the superhero has affected the world of Invincible on a much grander scale.

Shmuel Elenberg was born in Poland and belonged to the youth movement, Habonim Dror. After the horrors of the Holocaust, he tried to make his way to Mandate Palestine with other clandestine immigrant (ma’apilim) but their ship was captured by the British.
Elenberg was sent to Camp 67 in Dhekelia, Cyprus, one of the many detention camps set up by the British to house the ma’apilim. In May, 1948, David Ben Gurion declared an independent Jewish state, and opened its gates to all Jews around the world, including those interned in Cyprus detention camps. However, it took until February 1949 until the last group of detainees left for the new State of Israel.
We know from this greeting card sent to Elenberg by friends or relatives in Israel that he was still in Camp 67 over Rosh Hashana in September 1948. This means that he must have been one of the last of the ma’apilim to finally reach the shores of Eretz Yisrael.
The postcard also depicts a photograph of jubilant crowds celebrating the declaration of independence.
This Rosh Hashana card, which teaches us so much about the dramatic years around Independence and the stories of the people who lived through this era, can be found in the Atlit Archives at the Atlit Detention Camp. Visit the camp to find out about the daily lives of the thousands of clandestine immigrants – many of them Holocaust survivors - who were interned here.
There are exciting plans underway to expand Atlit, including state-of-the art exhibits to tell these fascinating and heroic stories of clandestine immigration. Jewish National Fund-USA is committed to preserving Israel's heritage sites to ensure that future generations know the foundations of the miraculous nation that is Israel.
