Space!AU Sevika x Reader

Warnings: none except some light feels :3

A/N: Thought I would try an AU. Im going through major space phase right now lol. You guys are all so awesome and I hope you enjoy <3

A tongue ever so slightly protruding from your lips, brows furrowed, fingers deftly moving from tool to tool; all the signs of deep concentration. The high level of skill was evident in both your unstoppable drive and the dust that had collected on the tops of guide manuals left untouched for months. The gentle hum of the ship and some old music playing in another room were all that you really heard.

Without breaking rhythm, you reached for a piece of bread laying halfway on a tin tray. You took a bite and placed the bread back, using vague muscle memory to place it where you ‘thought’ the tray might be. You missed…

Working as a Ship Technician – a National Earth Force Space Technician to be exact – wasn't as exciting as some might've guessed. Consistent (almost constant) work, fairly decent pay (though not the best) and relative seclusion if you were a solo job meant not many were eagerly applying for the role but rather getting assigned. Most opted to just be a pilot.

You, however, found the job to line up with what you liked. Busy work on ships that you hoped to also fly someday, whilst getting to keep people at a relative distance;something you preferred. You couldn’t complain when it was enough to keep a “roof over your head” (does that apply in space?) and food in your belly.

Your most recent mission was being aboard The Cordoba with 6 others to go and guard Selene Terminal. It was only a couple thousand miles from Earth but had recently undergone abuse from marauders deciding to make it a hideout. Your team was given 6 months max to eradicate the team as well as clean and repair the terminal before coming back. Miles, the captain of the crew, estimated that only 4 would be necessary.

Knock knock

Startled, you ended up yanking on a few wires too hard, the ends coming clean off. “Shit” you thought, placing the modulator down with a sigh. You turned to the entrance of your room, realization dawning that you had left the door open unknowingly and were met by a tall figure taking up majority of the entryway.

Standing there hunched at the door frame was Sevika, the team’s 2nd in command and head of defensive/offensive weaponry. She stood, waiting to be let in, her eyes casually scanning the messy quality of your room.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle ya” she said, lightly stepping into your room. The Cordoba wasn’t exactly a large ship and to maximize it's total storage capability, everything had to be minimized. In turn, they made Sevika appear almost giant like.

You watched curiously as she struggled to place herself into a decent (and non-awkward) spot of your room. She settled on leaning against your bunk and returned her attention to you. By this point, you had regained your drive to fix the modulator that was now, in worse repair.

“What can I do for ya Sevika?” You ask, trying to regain the rhythm you held only moments ago.

“What makes you so sure I need something? Maybe the others were getting annoying, so I figured I’d stop by on the way to the cavalry room.”

You snorted and paused once more on your work to look at her. You weren’t the type to involve yourself in many relationships, and even less, to waste thoughts on a person’s appearance. Yet, standing there, an arm casually holding her head up as she peered at you, led your focus astray.

Regardless, you couldn’t help but point out the falsity in her supposed reason for interrupting your work. “As much as I’d like to believe you thought of me so kindly, it’s been 2 months since we launched out here and only now are you stopping by.”

She chuckled and adjusted her stance, facing her left side more directly towards you. “Ok ok, I probably could’ve done a little better…my left arm is fucked. Don’t know why it’s twitching but I can’t eat a damn meal without my hand breaking the spork or missing my mouth and almost stabbing my eye.”

You imagine someone as gruff looking as Sevika attempting to eat and her hand comically bringing the food to anywhere but her mouth. Taking a small glance at the modulator, you figure that another night without sleep won’t do too much harm. You point to the chair beside you, “have a seat.”

She plops down, her head towering over yours. Your cheeks warmed at the thought of her stature being so close to your own, her heat radiating onto you drawing even more sweat as you both-

“Snap out of it. You never think like this. Wtf” you shook your head and pulled closer to her arm. Silence filled the room once more as you inspected the arm, gently twisting here and there to get a better look. A few moments later, you pulled back.

“Alright I think I’ve got it” You stood up and walked towards the bookshelf that had laid untouched until now. The stack was far taller than you, a problem that hadn't bothered you because you really didn’t access them.

Standing on your tippy toes, your fingertips did their best to grab hold of the book but alas, it was proving to be too high. How did you manage to even place them up there in the first place? You turned to look back at Sevika and let her know you’d be right back with a stool, but instead were met with her figure centimeters away as she pulled the book for you. The proximity sent your mind and body spiraling, though on the exterior you stood frozen in place. The very idea of your bodies touching briefly would overload and K.O your system.

Pulling back, she wiped the dust off and handed you the book. You stared intensely at its cover in hopes of avoiding eye contact and went back to your seat. Flipping through the pages, you scrambled to find instructions before your mind jumped off the deep end.

“You need a manual?”

“Not typically no, but I’m not exactly specialized in fixing prosthetics”

“Is this a good idea then? I figured you would just pop some things back into place and it’d be good”

You cocked an eyebrow at her “You assumed I was a general fix-it-all mechanic?”

She appeared unbothered by your remark, and instead began to get up from the seat. "Admittedly a fault on my part heh. I think I’ll wait to find the right person then.”

Bothered by her response (unsure of why), you taunted back “AH,right, I understand. That would make more sense, and it’s only 2-4 months until we leave” you shrug “ what’s a few more messy meals and a lost eye or two?”

It didn’t take long for her to flip around and stand over you. The dominating presence increased tenfold as her eyes bore into yours.

“You certainly are quick to make a remark but let me remind you that I am your superior officer and therefore, do not appreciate the sarcasm.” With that, she sat back down and jutted her left arm out towards you.

Without another word said, you proceeded to dig into her arm and work out the issues. Before long, you fell back into that same rhythm, steadily following the manual and nimbly rewiring a few areas in her arm. The quality of the prosthetic was excellent, clearly done by the best but this didn’t deter you because like all things, it was bound to break down.

An hour passed in what felt like lightyear speed, and the arm was now mostly fixed (or so you hoped). You placed the external plate back over where her triceps would be, then scooted back. Sevika hadn’t taken her eyes of you and the work you performed until now, not that you had really noticed. She found how focused you were to be a little mesmerizing, and if she was being completely honest, attractive.

You watched as she flexed the arm and tested out gripping random items. No signs of glitching left you feeling proud of your improv handy work. The feeling didn’t last long however, when the modulator caught your eye and reminded you the night was not over. Sevika placed a final item down and stood up, her right hand reaching out to you.

“Thanks for fixing it. Hopefully I’ll manage a peaceful meal tomorrow.”

You shook her hand, a small part of you disappointed that she chose to end the night this way. Why did it matter though if the both of you had never really interacted until now? What did you expect, a warm embrace and a kiss?....No, perhaps not that far but it was an appealing thought that you let run around in your mind for a bit. As hard as you worked, you deserved it.

You watched her leave, a small bid goodnight and she disappeared. Your shoulders slunk, letting any tensity out. You didn’t want to admit it but up until now, keeping to yourself had left you remote and surrounded only by endless work. The truth nabbed at your heart a little but you shewed the feeling away and slid back to your work area to finish working the modulator.

***The next morning***

Back in the kitchen, Sevika inspected the spork in front of her, lackluster oatmeal clinging like cement. She dared her hand to make the first attack but instead was met with a perfect stillness, the only move being the oatmeal plopping back into the bowl below.

“I see your arm isn’t tryna kill you anymore” Miles pointed out, prepping a cup of coffee.

“Yea, I had y/n fix it last night. Gotta admit they did a helluva job. First calm meal I’ve had in a while”

“I didn’t know they could fix prosthetics.”

Another crewmember, Dina, walked in, a clipboard in hand. “Miles we gotta do another inventory check since we got some more supplies from the terminal.”

“Yea, sure. Grab Felix and we’ll head down. Hey, check out Sev’s arm.”

Dina made her way over and vaguely inspected the arm. “Not bad. You did this?”

“Nah, y/n did last night. I didn’t know you had some manuals placed in the ship Dina.”

She shrugged, walking around the table towards the doorway. “I did cause y/n requested it. Far as I’m concerned, your arm, your responsibility.” With that she swiftly exited with Miles, leaving Sev to ponder her words.

Back in your room, a loud snore filled the air. You had worked vigorously throughout the night to fix the modulator resulting in you falling asleep at your desk. Head buried into your arms, your right hand barely holding a screwdriver, you shifted in your slumber.

Knock knock

The rap of knuckles on the metal frame stirred you from your sleep, though not as harshly as last night. You groggily lifted your head, cracked eyes peeking at the doorway. “Again?” you thought, attempting to rub the sleep from your eyes. The smell of coffee drifted to your nose and caused you to sit more upright. Once again, Sev’s tall figure took up the space of your room entryway. She carefully stepped in and placed the cup of joe on your desk followed by a dry looking breakfast bar.

“what’s this?” you murmured, lifting your head up to get a better look.

““Fresh” coffee and a breakfast bar” she quoted the fresh.

You eagerly reached for the coffee, bringing the cup to your lips and letting the warm vapors tingle your face. She watched as you slowly took a sip, a gratefully morning hum gracing her ears. You were kind of adorable as you did your best to wake up. She crossed her arms “Thanks again for fixing my arm. So far no problems and I actually didn’t have to fight for my breakfast. Not that this stuff is easy to put down anyway.”

You mumbled an anytime as you nipped at the breakfast bar and rolled your hips to rid of the aches left by sleeping over a desk.

“I didn’t know you requested to have that manual brought along. I didn’t even think of something like that.”

You shrugged “I mean yea, I’m not able to fix everything with ease. Your arm, although one of the best built out there, still has a small chance of breaking down so better to be prepared.”

She nods while you take another sip of coffee, your nose scrunching a little in disgust.

“Sorry, I wasn’t sure how you liked your coffee so I kept it black.”

“I usually douse it up with cream n’ sugar otherwise you can taste just how un-fresh it is.”

“I’ll try and remember that the next time I bring you a cup.”

You briefly pause, mind interpreting her words, excitement bubbling inside at the thought of this being a regular occurrence. A smile dawned upon your face, but you kept it hidden by the coffee cup. You peek up at her “You better, otherwise I’ll unfix your arm” you tease.

She smirks and gives a small salute before turning to leave. “I’ll see you around. Maybe when I decide to inspect the cavalry room again.”

“Looking forward to it” you blurt and turn in your chair to hide any embarrassment. She exits the room with a light tap on the frame before disappearing again, leaving you with red cheeks and a giddy smile.

“I hope her arm breaks again….”

credit cards one card had 2 000 one had 3500 one had 2000 and one had 1000 because I am buying for multiple people I had 4 different cards all in my name I wanted one receipt for each card not a big deal to me right wrong again he cited some policy and said if the order is more than 750 items that they aren’t allowed to ring in under 750 items on any one receipt id like to point out that that amount is higher than your employees said they could take as a cash payment I asked him to please show me that I would understand better if I could just read it he was willing to do so he brought out the policy book and to my surprise what it actually said was words to the afffect of cash payments cannot be split up or over 750 items I forget the second half my immediate reply was so what’s the big deal im using credit not cash he snatched the policy book away from me at that point and said you know what you can just listen to me or I don’t have to let you buy anything it’s up to my discretion I then called your orlando outlet and your new jersey outlet and talked to the store managers and cited your policy I was given I asked them to confirm if that was accurate and both said if it was a policy it was news to them I then asked if they would let me buy my order using 4 cards and 4 receipts the woman at orlando said oh my gosh yes we do that every single day I asked if I went to her store if I would have any trouble with this in the future and was told no then she said you can always come down here if you’re in the area and i’ll be happy to take your order after that phone call I tried again here’s the video of that attempt I said listen I have 4 credit cards your register girl said you told her she can’t ring up an order under 750 items that’s 3500 if it’s 5 items not all of my cards have that much I have done multiple receipts every time I came here heck I can even supply them to show it he tells me that because I am order so many items that I can’t have less tan 750 items per receipt so I point around to everyone else and ask what about everyone else you aren’t forcing them to spend a minimum of 750 items what about the final charge i’ll have 750 items for two tickets but the leftover isn’t going to be 750 items you’re not going to let me buy them he shrugged his shoulders to say no at this point I haven’t yelled ive been a bit snarky and sarcastic because I know he’s just giving me a hard time two people ring in our order almost every time I am up there and we were there 3 times in the last 6 months spent a bunch each time so at 730 8pm or so we are done shopping assuming that two people could ring us up ended up being a fantasy he forced one employee only to ring us up later on he comes up when its now close to 9pm and says hey you mind if we ring you up on both registers I chuckle and say no I don’t but you do you don’t want to be breaking that 750 rule do you he glared at me and then sent the employee away and walked off after blinking a few times I laugh because after telling me over and over he couldn’t do it he just got caught trying to do what should have been done to begin with a short while later after 9 I find out that everyone is standing uip front except for the one girl and another associate because none of the rest of them are allowed to help her ring us up the only two people left in the store with about 700 more items to be rang in if that’s not enough since it was a holidy all of these employees are apparently being paid overtime to stand around and wait at a bit after 10 all but two girls leave and one girl is waiting to count cash while the other girl sits and keeps ringing stuff in we apologize profusely we expected two employees to ring us up like always and timed our visit to be out around 9 if this had happened instead of having one literally stand there and watch her for 1 hour and 47 minutes after close we would have all been out on time and no overtime or extra hours spent so finally at 10 47 pm our orders are done we thank the lovely girl lauren and jasmine who got stuck staying 2 hours past close because a manager made up some random policy and had to double down when I pointed out he really needed to follow that 750 rule when he was going to toss another girl on the register if this is policy fine it doesn’t seem to be no manager at your other outlets knew what he was talking about the orlando one insisted that the only restrictions are on cash payments and verified I was paying cash or credit it’s a pretty humiliating experience to get hassled trying to buy panties and bras by someone who’s on some type of power trip the only thing I said sideways to him was that I flat out didn’t believe his policy and that credit absolutely is not the same as cash I didnt call him any names scream at him or did anything to disrupt the store beyond what you see in the videos if this is not policy i’d like an apology from that manager in person or over the phone admitting he was mistaken I would hope that the next time I go there I am not hassled but if not I guess there’s always orlando or new jersey who seem to be quite friendly I also want to give recognition to jasmine and lauren lauren is the poor soul who got stuck ringing everything in alone because of the manager’s silly rule and not allowing anyone to help because it would be in violation of the 750 item rule jasmine was the cash counter who had to wait until we were out of the store to count cash even more interesting is that I had a former employee with me helping me buy and she said she never heard of this policy either but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t added since she left she was just as confused because the manager spent over 30 minutes trying to explain and defend this when that time certainly would have been more efficiently spent doing productive things instead of hassling someone who literally sits in a corner and speaks to no one while sorting through your products one bin at a time id love a call back about this or to find out what exactly is going on ive never been hassled like this before and it was a little frustrating and very trying to keep my cool joe
