Ida Stephens Owens (September 13, 1939 – February 24, 2020) was a scientist known for her work with drug-detoxifying enzymes. She received her Ph.D. from Duke University, making her one of the first two African Americans to receive a doctorate from the school. She spent her career at the National Institutes of Health, where she worked from 1968 to 2017 and pioneered the study of the genetics of human diseases and drug metabolism. She grew up on a farm in the small town of Whiteville, NC. Her mother died when she was six years old. Her early education was in segregated public schools. She then attended North Carolina College, graduating summa cum laude in Biology (BS) and Mathematics (minor). She was employed as a laboratory assistant at a National Science Foundation Summer Institute for High School Teachers at North Carolina College, and she spent a summer in the lab of Daniel C. Tosteson in the Department of Physiology at Duke University. Then, in 1962, she began her Ph.D. studies of biochemistry and physiology in the laboratory Jacob J. Blum at Duke shortly after the university racially integrated its graduate and professional schools. When she graduated in 1967, she became the first woman, to receive a Ph.D. from Duke University and the first woman to receive any degree in physiology from Duke. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CicWovHOLVarJZpVJRi1lsKdfC4FDHbVXJ-v1k0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Have you got a list of fav political or philosophical books? I'm trying to find some non fiction books to read while I'm stuck at home and I'm not sure where to start 👀? Thank U !
yah totally! this is kind of incomplete because most of my books are at my apartment and im not there and cant remember them well but here 😞
against empire by michael parenti- i think is a good overview of history of american imperialism. blackshirts & reds and inventing reality by him are also really good, first is about anticommunism and fascism, second is about american media
rethinking america: the imperial homeland in the 21st century by ida susser and jeff maskovsky
nationalism and sexuality by george mosse
mythologies by roland barthes
reform or revolution by rosa luxemburg
how jews became white folks and what that says about race in america by karen brodkin
critical race theory edited by richard delgado
killing hope by william blum
structuralism and semiotics by terrence hawkes
history of the world in seven cheap things by moore and patel
havent read the whole book but chapter 4 from racecraft by barbara fields is amazing i really recommend it
also not whole books but u should check out some of walter benjamin’s essays and i would also say lenin’s short writings on marxists.org
and i have a readings tag that has more journal articles and books. oh also its not nonfiction altho i guess it counts as philosophy but travels in hyperreality by umberto eco is one of my favs

Classic Movie Posters
This famous story has been adapted to screen and other media for years. Many people have played these characters but have tried to sticky closely to how the characters have been written. These are some of the early films produced during the 1940′s. These movie posters are very different to your typical poster of the modern era as they have a  hand drawn quality to them. It might be an interesting concept to use this style as a theme for my product.  For each of these movie posters I’ll put in the movie biography to give it a little bit of context.

Director: Sidney LanfieldWriters: Ernest Pascal (screenplay), Arthur Conan Doyle (novel) (as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
Stars: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Richard Greene.

IMDb
When a Nazi saboteur jeeringly predicts to the nation new depredations, via their radio 'Voice of Terror', the Intellegence Inner Council summons Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) to help in the crisis. Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce), are visited the first night of their investigation; a man falls dying from a knife wound on their doorstep. His last word leads Holmes into the slums where he encounters Kitty (Evelyn Ankers), the sweetheart of the slain man.
Director: John RawlinsWriters: Lynn Riggs (screenplay), John Bright (screenplay)
Stars: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Evelyn Ankers

The master sleuth hunts his archenemy, Professor Moriarty, who is planning the crime of the century.
Director: Alfred L. Werker (as Alfred Werker)Writers: Edwin Blum (screenplay), William Absalom Drake (screenplay) (as William Drake)
Stars: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Ida Lupino .
IMDb is really good at finding all the films related to the series and puts them in a chronological timeline. From this you can see the evolution of movie posters from past to present. Its really sad to see how posters now are very generic with no real characteristic or personality in the design. They use very striking typography which very bold and takes up a large proportion of the poster. The combination of photographs, colours, type and drawings makes them a lot more interesting to look at. I think I would definitely consider using some of these ideas in my own project.

CARREIRA:

Other religious groups voted for Trump as well, but none did so at the 81 percent level that white evangelicals did. Among Protestants, 58 percent voted for Trump; among white Catholics, 60 percent voted for Trump; among Mormons, 61 percent. In April 2017, approval of Trump had dropped among white mainline Protestants to 50 percent and among white Catholics to 53 percent. But among white evangelicals his approval rating stayed high, at 78 percent. [...]
The sectional crisis and Civil War divided American Protestants regionally and racially into three groups: northern white Protestants, southern white Protestants, and black Protestants. Black Protestants, located overwhelmingly in the South, left white churches in droves during the 15 years after the end of the war, and they founded scores of new denominations, seminaries, and colleges. The largest white Protestant denominations had split in the lead-up to the Civil War and did not reunify until the mid-20th century (in the case of the Methodists) or the late 20th century (in the case of the Presbyterians). Northern and southern Baptists have never reunified. Each of these groups considered themselves evangelical well into the 20th century, but after the Civil War the regional groups took different trajectories.
The near-absence of black believers in white churches was the condition for the development of a distinctly white evangelicalism. As historian Ed Blum has demonstrated, the popular revivals of Dwight Moody and the growth of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in the late 19th century encouraged a solidarity between northern and southern Protestants that was built on a shared whiteness. When the African American journalist Ida B. Wells railed against WCTU leader Frances Willard for exhibiting racism, Willard responded that she did not see how characterizing whiskey supporters as “dark-faced mobs” or expressing fears of drunken black rapists strengthened a racist stereotype. Like many of her white evangelical compatriots, Willard could not see how her religious views centered on whiteness. Though African American believers largely shared the biblical and theological views of white Protestants, white and black Christians did not worship together or view the world or the faith in the same way.
The racial segregation of American Protestantism facilitated deeper commingling of racist beliefs with evangelical religion. Historian Joe Creech has shown how white southerners’ ethos of honor, which in the antebellum era had clashed with evangelical teachings about, say, humbling oneself at the foot of the cross, fused with evangelical religion in the decades after the Civil War. Defending white women’s honor became a primary justification for lynching, which received theological cover from southern ministers who insisted on the centrality of sexual purity to evangelical religion. Allegations of sexual impropriety doomed thousands of black men to extralegal killings, committed by white vigilantes in the name of honor and Christian faith.

FIAC international art fair 2017: 40 new galleries and a design sector
Tumblr media

The 44th edition of the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain or FIAC will be held at the Grand Palais in Paris from October 19 to 22, 2017. One of the largest international art fairs showcasing modern and contemporary artworks from established and emerging artists, this year’s edition of FIAC will feature shows by 192 modern and contemporary art galleries (with 40 new exhibitors added this year) from 29 countries from around the world. These include first-time representations by six countries – Egypt, Kosovo, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Tunisia – this year.
FIAC 2017 at the Grand Palais
Of the 192 participating galleries, the Nave will host exhibitions by 106 international galleries, including Blum & Poe, Gagosian Gallery, 303 Gallery, Dvir Gallery, kamel mennour, Pace, Daniel Templon and White Cube. The Salon d’honneur will bring together 20 galleries specialised in discovery and promotion of groundbreaking artists. The Upper Galleries of the Grand Palais will focus on contemporary and emerging art galleries, while the recently inaugurated Salon Jean Perrin will host seven exhibitors.

A new design sector
In 2004, FIAC was the first international art fair to include a design section. The 44th edition of FIAC reinforces the art fair’s focus on modern and contemporary design with the reintroduction of a design sector. This year will see the participation of five Paris-based design galleries – Patrick Seguin, Jousse Entreprise, LAFFANOUR – Galerie Downtown, Patrick Seguin and Eric Philippe – who focus on 20th and 21st-century design.

The Lafayette Sector
Created in 2009 in partnership with the Galeries Lafayette Group, the Lafayette sector financially supports the participation of young international galleries that nurture emerging artists. For this year’s programme, ten galleries from eight countries have been selected for their dynamism and commitment to emerging artists, seven of whicH will present solo exhibitions. The galleries selected are Bernhard (Zürich, Switzerland), Experimenter (Kolkata, India), Freedman Fitzpatrick (Los Angeles, United States), Gypsum (Cairo, Egypt), Instituto de Visión (Bogotá, Colombia), joségarcía, mx (México D.F.), LambdaLambdaLambda (Prishtina, Kosovo), Queer Thoughts (New York, United States), SCHLOSS (Oslo, Norway), and Truth and Consequences (Geneva, Switzerland).
On Site at Petit Palais
The On Site sector, launched for the first time last year will feature 40 sculptures and installations from October 18 to 22, 2017 at the Petit Palais as well as on the Avenue Winston Churchill which will be pedestrianised during the event. Accessible for free, the On Site sector will showcase works by Peter Buggenhout, Antonio Caro, Claude Closky, Johan Creten, Ida Ekblad, Anna Fasshauer, Laurent Grasso, Sheila Hicks, Justin Matherly, Matt Mullican, Richard Nonas, Falke Pisano, Enrique Ramirez, Hans Schabus, Joel Shapiro, Alina Szapocznikow, Antoni Tàpies, Wang Wei and Erwin Wurm.

Hors les murs – Outdoor artworks and installations
A selection of freely accessible and monumental sculptures, installations and artworks will be presented in three Parisian locations – the Jardin des Tuileries, Musée National Eugène Delacroix, and Place Vendôme.
The Jardin des Tuileries will show works by Gilles Barbier, Julien Berthier, Mel Bochner, Ali Cherri, George Condo, Marc Couturier, Folkert de Jong, Jean Denant, Erik Dietman, Jim Dine, Jean Denant, Maria Elvira Escallon, Hreinn Fridfinnson, Ryan Gander, Stefan Rinck, Samara Scott, Claude Viallat and Carey Young. Following on to previous years’ outstanding architectural displays, an exceptional selection of modern and contemporary architectural works, including those by Jean Prouvé and Hans-Walter Müller, will be installed on the Esplanade des Feuillants which borders the Rue de Rivoli.

The idyllic setting of Musée National Eugène Delacroix, situated in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, will exhibit works by German artist Katinka Bock who will be represented by Jocelyn Wolff, Paris. Bock, who is currently in residence in Paris, works with clay, natural and found materials and more recently, bronze, to create sculptures and installations that explore questions of temporality and space and deal with questions of language, history and shared spaces.
Place Vendôme has been a part of the FIAC offering since 2012. Previous artists include projects by Jaume Plensa (2012), Tadashi Kawamata (2013), Paul McCarthy (2014), Dan Graham (2015) and Ugo Rondinone (2016). This year, FIAC has associated with the Chantal Crousel gallery to present an in situ project of American artist Oscar Tuazon at the Place Vendôme.
Performance festival Parades: Contemporary dance, music and poetry
Launched last year, Parades for FIAC is a performance festival focusing on interdisciplinary dialogues between contemporary art and performance arts. Contemporary dance, music, performance, theatre, poetry and experimental live performances will be held at the Musée du Louvre, the Palais de la Découverte, the Petit Palais and the Centre Pompidou. Subject to availability, the admission to the Parades performance festival is free and the full programme can be accessed here.

Other events during FIAC 2017
A three-day conference cycle will be held from October 20 to 22, 2017, in the Conversation Room, a bespoke space created for the FIAC on the first floor of the Grand Palais. A carte blanche has been given to 89plus, an international research platform created by Simon Castets and Hans Ulricht Obrist, that focuses on creative innovations by post-1989 generation. All of the conversations can be accessed freely within the fair, subject to availability.
Cinéphémère, featuring a selection of films by international artists, will be held in a makeshift 14-seater movie theatre at Place Clémenceau near the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais. For the programme, please visit FIAC or Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard. The programme can be accessed here.
La Colonie, founded by Kader Attia, will feature a series of events around the theme of “Afrofuturism” every evening during FIAC week, dedicated to artists such as Michelange Quay and Kapwani Kiwanga, from October 17 to October 22, 2017, 9 pm onwards.
