5 Smart WordPress Tools for Modern Bloggers on the Go
The post 5 Smart WordPress Tools for Modern Bloggers on the Go appeared first on HostGator Blog.
Blogging is the worst, right? You have to sit down at your computer for hours, figure out how WordPress works, and clack away at the keyboard until your wrists hurt.
Whoa! Wait a minute. If this is your experience with blogging in the year 2020, then you’re doing it wrong.
WordPress has come a long way over the years in terms of updates. Today, creating a blog post is as easy as talking. And, talk-to-text via the WordPress mobile app is not the only smart WordPress tool.
With the help of the sophisticated, yet uncomplicated, WordPress interface and other neat WordPress plugins, you can add rich media to your blog posts with the click of a button, or two. Let’s talk about how this all works.
This post will cover:
How to use talk-to-text in the WordPress mobile app
How to use the native functionality in WordPress to upload videos
The most common WordPress plugins for bloggers
Let’s get this party started!
Tumblr media
How to use talk-to-text in the WordPress app
One of the best things about WordPress is the ability to compose blog posts on the go using your phone. And, you don’t even have to type one word. You can use the talk-to-text mobile app feature to capture everything you want to say without writing one word.
Here’s how to use the talk-to-text feature in the WordPress app.
1. Download the WordPress app. If you don’t already have the WordPress app on your phone, you’ll need to download it to your iOS or Android device.
2. Login to your account. Once you’ve downloaded the app, use the same login credentials to access your account as you would use on your computer.
3. Click the pink icon. Navigate to the home page and click on the pink “create a post or page” icon at the bottom right of the screen.
Tumblr media
4. Select blog post. The WordPress app will give you the option to create a blog post or create a page. Choose blog post.
Tumblr media
5. Press the microphone. At the bottom right of the screen, you will notice a little microphone. Click this microphone and start talking. Remember to dictate punctuation in your blog posts.
Tumblr media
6. Talk. As soon as you press the button, WordPress will start recording your voice and translating what you say into text. If at any time you want to stop and type, you can press the keyboard button.
And, that’s it. That’s how you can create a blog post on the go by speaking instead of typing.
Keep in mind you can also add images and videos in the mobile app. Just remember to save your images and videos to your device for easy selection.
How to add videos to WordPress without a plugin
Bloggers are using audio and video content in their posts more than ever. Considering recent stats, it makes sense why video is so popular:
85% of all internet users in the United States watched online video content monthly on any of their devices.
54% of consumers want more video content from a brand or business they support.
Videos are consumers’ favorite kind of content from a brand on social media.
Internet users love blog content, and they want more of it. Thankfully, WordPress has made it easy for bloggers to add videos to blog posts without even needing to download a plugin. Here are the steps you need to take to upload a video right within WordPress.
1. Create a new blog post. Once you are in your WordPress account, direct your attention to the top navigation bar, click on the plus sign, and select “post” from the drop-down menu.
Tumblr media
2. Start writing. Once you are on the blog post page, you can start writing your content.
3. Create a video content blog. Once you are ready to insert your video, click on the little plus sign. It will appear to the right or the bottom of your text.
Tumblr media
4. Search for video. As soon as you click the plus sign, a box will appear with various content options. Video doesn’t appear first, so to find it faster, I always quickly search “video” in the top bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Select your file type. Once you select “video,” WordPress will offer three different upload options, including upload, media library, and insert from URL. If your video is on your desktop, choose “upload.” If you have already uploaded your video to your WordPress media library, press “media library.” If your video exists on the web (e.g., YouTube), then click on “insert from URL.”
Tumblr media
Once you follow the appropriate directions, WordPress will insert your video into the content, and give you the option to write a caption.
Tumblr media
You can repeat this process anytime you need to insert a video into your content. You don’t need any fancy video plugins to add videos to WordPress.
If you want to add audio content to your blog (you do), then you can follow the exact same process, except you select “audio” as your content block, instead of video.
Top WordPress plugins for bloggers on the go
Now that you know how to dictate your blog posts on the go and how to add video and audio content to your WordPress blog posts, let’s talk about other WordPress blog plugins that will make your blogging life easier.
Here is a rundown of the WordPress plugins every blogger should add to their site.
1. Akismet
Let’s start this section out with a quick round of Jeopardy.
I’ll take “Bloggers for $500, Alec.”
“The least favorite thing bloggers come in contact with on their sites, and also a slice of questionable canned meat.”
“What is spam?”
Exactly! Cleaning spam out of your comments section is not only time-consuming, but it’s also annoying.
Akismet is a WordPress plugin that scrolls through all of your comments and checks them for spam. Akismet uses a consistently growing database that removes any malicious, irrelevant, or inappropriate sales comments. And, Akismet does it BEFORE the comments get published on your site.
This plugin is essential for helping you save time and keeping your blog credible.
2. Jetpack
Jetpack is my personal second favorite WordPress plugin. It has robust functionality and keeps an eye on your account.
Here are the benefits of Jetpack:
Site analytics. While it’s true you can (and should) add Google Analytics to your website, Jetpack also does the hard tracking work. Jetpack will tell you how many site visitors you have, and this great analytics information shows up right in your WordPress dashboard.
Downtime monitor. Jetpack will send you an email notification every time your site goes down. I cannot tell you how many times this feature has saved my blogging bacon. It will also tell you when your site goes back up.
Site speed. Another Jetpack benefit is enhanced site speed. With Jetpack, you can upload high-resolution photos and can count on Jetpack to deliver them to your website visitors at high resolutions with super-fast speeds.
Content back up. Jetpack also provides an automatic daily content backup and 30-day archive. This feature puts your mind at ease when it comes to making large website changes.
Spam filter and login protection. Akismet is not the only plugin that filters out spam. Jetpack also provides spam filtering as well as login protection.
Jetpack offers a free plan that is great for beginners and three other paid plans for bloggers that are interested in more features.
3. Yoast
If Jetpack is my second favorite WordPress plugin, guess what my first favorite is? That’s right! Yoast.
As you know, growing a successful blog takes more than just excellent writing skills. It also involves learning how to structure and optimize your content in a way that helps search engines read and rank your content.
Yoast is a WordPress SEO plugin that walks you through most of the steps you need to take to properly optimize your content for Google.
Once you download the Yoast SEO plugin, you’ll notice some additional information on the bottom of your new blog posts with the heading “Yoast SEO.”
Tumblr media
You’ll also see three tabs at the top, including SEO, readability, and social. Let’s talk about how each of these works.
SEO
The SEO tab prompts you to enter a keyword and write a snippet (meta description) where you include your target keyword. Yoast will also provide you with a quick SEO analysis to see what changes you need to make in your content to make your blog post more search engine friendly.
Some SEO suggestions will include:
Inserting outbound links (links to credible websites that aren’t your own)
Adding internal links (adding links to other pages on your website)
Placing your keyword in your introduction
Keeping your meta description within a certain word length
Adding more text if your post is too short
And more!
You’ll also notice some premium Yoast features like adding related keyword phrases.
Readability
The next tab is the readability tab. This tab provides a quick analysis of your text and offers suggestions on what you can do to make your post easier to read.
Here are some things you can expect in the readability analysis:
Use of transition words
Flesch Reading Ease score
Passive voice
Variety in sentences
Subheading distribution
Paragraph length
And more!
Google is more likely to rank your content in the search results if it’s easy to read. If you don’t have Yoast, you can use the Hemingway App to check your readability.
Social
The last heading in Yoast is the social heading. This section helps you optimize your blog post for social shares.
You can include a title, a description, and an image that will appear on Facebook and Twitter when people share your post.
When your social share information matches the platform in question, your content is more likely to get shared.
4. Sumo
Sumo for WordPress is another Simply Can’t Live Without It WordPress Tool if you are looking to build an email list.
Sumo’s free tool is fairly comprehensive and provides the following lead capture tools:
Email opt-in forms
Fully customizable design
Social media sharing
Visitor targeting
Unlimited subscribers
10,000 emails per month
Email integrations
Analytics
1-on-1 onboarding
And several eCommerce tools
If email marketing is your main jam, you can opt for the paid pro plan. This plan includes everything in the free plan plus advanced visitor targeting, A/B testing, ability to remove Sumo branding, 50,000 emails per month, eCommerce design templates, and unlimited stats.
Remember, email marketing has the highest ROI out of any other digital marketing strategy. Some studies show an email marketing ROI of 4400% or $44 for every $1 spent. The more email subscribers you capture, the higher your chances of a stunning ROI will be.
Not only is Sumo a great lead capture tool, but it also helps with social shares. In your Sumo account, you can add a social share bar to your website for free.
Here’s how:
Login to your Sumo account and click on “extras” on the top navigation bar.
Select “share” from the drop-down menu.
You’ll see a navigation bar including clicks, settings, layout, and more.
Start by clicking on “settings.”
From here, you can choose which social platforms you want to include in your share bar.
Continue through the navigational bar menu until you have fully customized your share bar.
When you are done with each section, remember to press “save.”
Once you are done telling Sumo what you want it to do, go to your WordPress website and refresh the page. You will see a share bar in the place where you indicated you wanted Sumo to add social share buttons.

The Essential Beginner Toolbox
Building and repairing your own things is one of the most rewarding skills you can learn. Sometimes its as simple as fixing a crack in your favorite bowl, sometimes its as complicated as building a custom shelf for a strangely shaped corner. Either way, being able to do it yourself will make you more self-sufficient and confident, and give you a new sense of ownership over your belongings and your spaces. It all starts in one place: Your toolbox.
Making a toolbox can be overwhelming when you're just starting out. There are a LOT of options out there, and its hard to know what you need and what you don't. There are certainly pre-designed starter toolboxes you can buy, but they won't necessarily have all of the essential things for the kind of thrifty DIY'ing that I find most useful. This is a breakdown of the essential tools with the most bang for your buck — and janky alternatives that can successfully replace them.
I won't include anything expensive, anything hard to find, and only one cheap power tool (which of course, can be substituted for the non-powered version). I also won't include links to purchase these tools online because I always believe in buying local when possible — so I HAVE included the type of store to find each one at! Do your best, but there's no shame in hitting up Am*zon if that's the only thing available to you. :)
I'll break it down into four categories of Things Tools Do: Cut, Hold, Impact, and Measure. With these four abilities, you'll be able to make or fix just about anything you put your mind to!
CUT
Wire Cutters for clipping things that might dull your scissors Substitute: scissors Average Price: $5
X-acto Blade for small precise cuts Substitute: small kitchen knife Average Price: $3
Hand saw for big cuts Substitute: honestly, borrow someone else's saw Average Price: $8
HOLD
Pliers for holding small things with precision Substitute: fingers Average Price: $5
Two small clamps for holding things over a long period of time Substitute: a pile of books or heavy object on a flat surface Average Price: $10 each
Screws for holding firm things together permanently Substitute: nails, sometimes Average Price: $5 for a small kit
Sewing needle and thread for holding soft things together permanently Substitute: staples will do in a pinch Average Price: $8
Glue for holding anything together permanently Substitute: glue gun, mod podge, or tape might work in a pinch Average Price: $5
IMPACT
Power Drill for making holes in things and putting screws in things Substitute: screwdriver with self-drilling screws Average Price: $25
Hammer for pounding things into place Substitute: place a flat, sturdy surface (like a spare piece of wood or a cutting board) over your target, and hit it with something that won't break. Average Price: $5
MEASURE
Tape Measure for knowing the length of things Substitute: an object you know the length of Average Price: $6
Straight Edge for drawing or finding straight lines Substitute: the edge of a book, and envelope, a laptop, a table, etc etc. Average Price: $2
And there you have it! This relatively small set will get you through almost any project. If you don't have a toolbox, you can use a plastic bin or even a tote bag to store them in (except for the saw) and a pencil case or ziplock bag will help keep your small items together.
Personally, I use a soft tool bag (pictured below) that my drill came with, and then two smaller tool bags, one I snagged from my dad, and the other I purchased.
The details!
Here is some more info on each type of tool, some tips on using it and its alternatives, and where to find it. Feel free to send me a message with any questions beyond this!
Wire Cutters
Why: Wire cutters can cut most materials, and won't get dull like scissors will. Wire is also a really useful material to work with! You can use it to attach things together, make an improvised hook, fix jewelry, and lots of other things. Where: You can get them at a hardware store or craft store.
Xacto Blade
Why: For cutting small things or making accurate cuts. The blades can easily be replaced and are pretty cheap for a pack of 50, so you won't have to worry about it getting dull. I carry one in my pencil case at all times. Where: A craft store is your best bet.
Handsaw
Why: When you're working with wood or even foam-core boards, a saw is the only way to go. A simple handsaw isn't particularly fun to use, but it'll get you far. Where: Hardware store.
Pliers
Why: They're great for small, accurate work. You should get both the flat-nose and the needle-nose for jewelry or wire work, but flat-nose pliers alone will be good for anything else. Where: Craft store for the needle-nose and small flat-nose, hardware store for a heftier flat-nose.
Small Clamps
Why: If you're gluing something together, clamps are the best way to go to ensure a tight fit. Two small clamps will take care of most situations for you. Don't worry about price, the cheapest ones will hold just as well as the expensive ones. Where: Hardware store.
Screws
Why: Screws can do it all. Or, most. In any case, I love them. Hang a picture, attach two pieces of wood together, use them as makeshift hooks, etc etc! Why not nails: If a nail can do it, 99% of the time a screw can do it too. But the reverse is not always true! Screws tend to make a bigger hole than a nail, but they are sturdier, more versitile, and much easier to remove. If you have a drill: Any screws will do, because you can drill a pilot hole! If you don't have a drill: Make sure to buy very pointy, or self-drilling screws. Where: Hardware store.
Sewing Needle
Why: Whether its fixing a rip in a shirt or making yourself a home-made heat pack, any work with fabric should have a sewing needle on hand. Where: The craft store or fabric store. You can also find travel kits at gas stations, rest stops, and airports.
Glue
Why: Stick stuff together!!! I'd recommend having two types: a general use glue (my favorite is Gorilla Glue) and a Super Glue. General use can be used for most things, but super glue is uniquely essential for fixing broken dishes or reinforcing buttons on clothing. If you have really heavy-duty stuff to glue together, look for epoxy glue. Where: Hardware store, craft store, or office supply store
Power Drill
Why: Why electric? I held off getting an electric one for ages, and even tried to find a hand-crank drill because I didn't feel like I really needed it. (It turns out a hand-crank drill is really hard to find.) However, it will REALLY open up doors for you. Putting screws into place is much easier, but also DRILLING HOLES INTO THINGS. Wow. Seriously. (As a note, if you don't have one and just use a screwdriver, look for "self-drilling" screws. This means that you don't have to drill a starter hole to get the screw in.) Where: Hardware store.
Hammer
Why: Nothing beats a hammer when it comes to hitting things. You can also use a board and hard-thing to hammer in nails. The method involves putting a board flat against the end of (usually) a nail, so the force of the blow distributes evenly across the board. As long as the board is perpendicular to the nail, all the force will go in the correct direction. Its a necessary precaution, because your object most likely doesn't have the flat hitting surface that a hammer has. It'll do in a pinch, but its difficult. Any kind of hammer will make a big difference, even a small cheap one. Where: Hardware store or office supply store
Tape Measure
Why: Whether you're building something or buying furniture or fitting clothing to yourself, a tape measure will do you well. However, there are good methods for measuring things without one! The first is using an object you know the length of, for instance, a common moleskine notebook is 8" the long way. Divide the edge in half, then half again, and then half once more, and you've got an accurate ruler. If you don't need actual numbers or are measuring something long, use a piece of string and tie a knot or mark it with a pen to record your measurement. If you need the numbers, use the first technique to make a homemade ruler, and run your string along it, a bit at a time, to find the length. Where: Hardware store.
Straight Edge
Why: Straight lines are important! There are all sorts of reasons you might want to draw or identify a straight line. A ruler is the standard, but the number of objects you can use to achieve this is pretty much anything with a straight edge on it. Where: Pretty much anywhere! Nice!
I hope this guide gave you some helpful info! Go ahead and shoot me an email if you have questions, I'd love to hear from you. :)
Love, Milo

As a big TV fan (I know you’re shocked), when I heard that One Day At A Time was added to the Paley Live schedule for 2017, I had to go. On May 4th my wife and I went to the Paley Center in Beverly Hills to see “An Evening with One Day At A Time.”
We’d been up there before, a few years ago for the CSI finale, which was a hectic and crazy affair with lines wrapping around the block. This was curiously less crazy and yet more family. Which I suppose is the point of the show.
The evening started with us watching an episode, the “Quinces” which was the season finale. I’ve obviously seen it before, but there is a magic that happens when you all watch something together. Suddenly the laughs become bigger, the tears fall faster, and you all share the message and the meaning in a simple sitcom. After that, the cast walked out on stage.
The Panel
The moderator, who was perfectly lovely, started by accidentally reading Isabella’s last name (Gomez) when introducing Marcel (Ruiz), and that set off a series of jokes that didn’t stop until the end. Everyone was free with the quips, including Norman Lear who sat on the end looking like he was napping.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Schnieder’s actor (Todd) was on his honeymoon and sent a funny video instead. Next the prepped questions started.
Why Now?
Norman Lear was asked why a Latino version of the show and why now, but he deferred to Brent Miller, saying “Brent asked me how about a Latino version of One Day At A Time?” Brent started to explain why, and Rita Moreno cut in asking him to tell us about the study.
Apparently there was a study done by Coca-Cola, where they were trying to figure out who to market to next. The fastest growing audience was single Latina mothers with two children. From there, everything fell into place. There was very little representation of authentic Hispanic families on TV. I believe they came up with three shows, one of which being Jane the Virgin), and none took place in Los Angeles.
Even the writers’ room is half Hispanic and half “human people” said executive producer (EP) Gloria Calderon Kellett. She and Mike Royce (whom Rita Moreno teased as being “not Hispanic”) as the EPs were the driving forces for a lot of things.
On Being On the Show
Rita Moreno explained she’d always been a fan of Norman’s work, and when she met him, they became instant friends. Norman immediately made a joke Rita was now pregnant.
Isabella Gomez, our darling Elena, said that she met and started working with Rita and Norman before she really understood them as the legends they are. And that was good, because she would have been a nervous wreck otherwise. Instead, she demanded Rita become her mentor, and loved Justina Machado like a mother.
Marcel Ruiz was nervous, but Rita treats him like her grandson. That prompted Isabella to joke that Marcel was Rita’s favorite. Rita replied “I love little boys!” and brought down the house.
Justina Machado talked about how she and Rita had worked together before, which Rita claimed not to remember. Then Rita explained that for a group of people who had never worked together before, they had amazing chemistry and it had only gotten deeper. Justina went on to say that Rita broke down doors and everyone loved her. Rita attempted to say something nice about Justina, but Justina kept interrupting, prompting Rita to say “I’m trying to say something nice about you, you little shit!”
Justina listens like no one I’ve worked with. She knocks me out. It’s so organic. I love her. But she is a little shit sometimes.
— Rita Moreno
Keep it Clean
Norman was the cause for the ‘no swearing’ rule for the show. That did not hold true for the panel, as Rita Moreno proceeded to say “Shit” as many times as possible. Rita was the one cast member who had a dirty word in the script, and it was removed. Rita pointed out she based Lydia on her own mother who would say “Change the shits” (sheets…).
By the way, if you want to feel like you were there, just read this recap filled with interjections from your sassy aunt, Rita Moreno, and implied dirty jokes by your grandfather, Norman Lear.
As Different as the Two Schniders
Norman said that the shows weren’t the same at all. They had the same name, they were about a single mother and her family, and that was it. Unlike the original show, the remake planned out the season in advance. They crafted the storylines to flow. Since they knew everyone was going to binge the show, they didn’t have the advantage of making specific episodes topical. And yet they totally were.
And then. Finally. It was time for the audience.
The Q&A
The questions started with a wonderful woman from Puerto Rico who was effusive in her thanks for the show. She saw her own family reflected.
Someone else asked about guest stars, and Rita Moreno went on record saying she hoped the show wouldn’t have a lot of guest stars. The heart of the show was family, not the big name of the week. Norman Lear mentioned that the only guest he really ever had was Sammy Davis Jr., and that was because Sammy wouldn’t stop bugging Norman about a gig! Justina Machado wanted the guests to be unknowns. “I’d like to be the show that helps discover great Latino talent.”
Another audience member asked if they worried about using too much Spanish. Gloria Kellett replied that if she said something in Spanish and the non-Spanish speaking writers laughed, it stayed in. After all, if she could look up “Bar Mitzvah,” they could Google. Mike Royce explained that comedy has a rhythm. “When a character speaks Spanish, you know when it feels right.”
A young man from Cuba said he learned about America from Lear’s shows, and we all cheered.
Our Time Was Up
At this point, our time was technically up. The timer went off and the cast looked sad and the moderator looked sad, and I, who had raised my hand a few times, was sad.
And then a miracle occurred. Norman and Mike said to keep going and everyone would pick one more person to hear talk. So I raised my hand and Mike Royce pointed at me.
I stood up with the mic and started by mentioning that forty years ago, there was an episode of All In The Family about Cousin Liz. I could see Norman Lear startle a little, and the producers nodded. They knew where I was going. That was, I said, one of the first times many people heard about lesbians. And now, here, forty years later we have a show that is something I could have used as a kid. Where a family dealt with the change with love, where they struggled, but still they loved.
I thanked them for doing that here and now, when we need it more than ever. Because I run a website (this one) with my friend, and we track all the queer females on television. And there aren’t as many as you’d think, and few have happy endings. Many die. And knowing that wasn’t going to happen on this show gave us all hope. I did try to joke “She’s not dying, right?”
A Few More Questions…
I admit the next ten minutes were a bit of a blur. Someone asked Marcel about the fame, and he said by the time he got back to school, all his friends had watched the show and wanted to know about season two. Another woman started to talk in halting English, until we all encouraged her to just use her native Spanish; she wanted to thank the writers. Rita joked that for those of the audience who didn’t understand Spanish, the woman had said wonderful things about Rita, while Norman asked for it to be repeated in Yiddish.
The cast was asked about how hard a job it was and had they every thought about not doing a multi-camera show. Gloria Kellett said no. The show was hard, yes, and the cast had to learn a new play every week and perform it for a live audience. But, as Rita pointed out, there’s a magic of working in front of a live audience.
The cast was also asked about their inspirations. Gloria explained that hers was her own life. That Cuban Americans in LA and San Diego don’t sound like those in Miami because of the multiple different kinds of Latinos in the area. They’re a melange. Even so, Justina Machado and Gloria Kellett’s 23 & Me’s were nearly identical! Next season they plan to talk about race a little more; as Gloria said, “I didn’t know I was brown until we moved to California.”
Socializing
The lights came up and we went down to try and meet the cast and crew. I immediately (accidentally!) bumped into Norman Lear so I shook his hand and said thank you. But we’d run so far over it was no more than five minutes before the cast was swept away. I didn’t get to say thank you to Isabella or Rita or Justina. But instead, I found myself thanked by many audience members. Some told them I’d made them cry a little. Others thanked me for saying what was in their hearts as well.
This includes Executive Producer Mike Royce! He stayed behind to talk to some of the audience, and took the time to thank me for saying that. That it helped them to hear they’d helped somehow.
Besides Mike, I talked to a few crew members. They too wanted to thank me, and we talked about how representation matters in so many ways. Seeing yourself on the television helps. A lot. This is true of queers but also single parents and Latinos and veterans and more. They talked about PTSD and being poor without being broke and on and on. It touched all of us in different ways.
Afterwords
One of the reasons I like this show so much is that we’re not the joke. While it films in some of the same, traditional, manners as popular shows like The Big Bang Theory, the main difference is the love. It was clear from the second they stepped on stage that everyone on that show likes each other. Rita Moreno was their brilliant, bawdy, hilarious aunt, teasing everyone (she called Justina Machado a “little shit” at least four times).
But with all the laughing and all the jokes, being gay isn’t the joke.
That’s been my biggest issue with The Big Bang Theory and other modern comedies. The joke is Sheldon and Raj and how they’re ‘weird’ or different. They make jokes that’s funny to like comics as an adult (it’s not), or that liking science makes you strange (it doesn’t). The joke is the fact that the main characters are weird.
There wasn’t a single joke that was about Elena being gay. There were jokes about everyone else, but the punchline wasn’t “Hur hur lesbian!” The joke was Lupe gave the wrong sex talk to the wrong kid twice. The joke was Elena watching Twilight for Kristen Stewart becuase “It sure wasn’t the plot.”
What a Sitcom Should Be
I used to say that I didn’t think One Day At A Time was a sitcom. I’d say it was a comedy, but it’s not about situations, it’s about family. The more I think about it, the more I think it’s a sitcom in the truest form. The joke is the situation, not the people. And the people are in on the joke.
Maybe that’s why I can laugh at this show freely.
One Night With One Day At A Time As a big TV fan (I know you're shocked), when I heard that One Day At A Time…

Let JFK's words guide lawmakers at all levels
It was 56 years ago and a day -- on Jan. 9, 1961 -- that President-elect John F. Kennedy delivered his famous "City Upon a Hill Speech" to Massachusetts legislators on Beacon Hill.
Kennedy's address urges us to have all legislators at every level of government to read it and be guided by its everlasting, democratic ideals that place country above all interests.
" ... During the last 60 days, I have been at the task of constructing an administration. It has been a long and deliberate process. Some have counseled greater speed. Others have counseled more expedient tests.
But I have been guided by the standard John Winthrop set before his shipmates on the flagship Arbella 331 years ago, as they, too, faced the task of building a new government on a perilous frontier.
"We must always consider," he said, "that we shall be as a city upon a hill -- the eyes of all people are upon us."
Today the eyes of all people are truly upon us -- and our governments, in every branch, at every level, national, state and local -- must be as a city upon a hill, constructed and inhabited by men aware of their great trust and their great responsibilities ...
History will not judge our endeavors, and a government cannot be selected merely on the basis of color or creed or even party affiliation. Neither will competence and loyalty and stature, while essential to the utmost, suffice in times such as these.
For of those to whom much is given, much is required.
And when at some future date the high court of history sits in judgment on each one of us recording whether in our brief span of service we fulfilled our responsibilities to the state, our success or failure, in whatever office we may hold, will be measured by the answers to four questions:
First, were we truly men of courage, with the courage to stand up to one's enemies and the courage to stand up, when necessary, to one's associates, the courage to resist public pressure, as well as private greed?
Secondly, were we truly men of judgment, with perceptive judgment of the future as well as the past, of our own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others, with enough wisdom to know that we did not know, and enough candor to admit it?
Third, were we truly men of integrity, men who never ran out on either the principles in which they believed or the people who believed in them; men who believed in us; men whom neither financial gain nor political ambition could ever divert from the fulfillment of our sacred trust?
Finally, were we truly men of dedication, with an honor mortgaged to no single individual or group, and compromised by no private obligation or aim, but devoted solely to serving the public good and the national interest.
Courage, judgment, integrity, dedication ... these are the qualities which, with God's help, this son of Massachusetts hopes will characterize our government's conduct in the four stormy years that lie ahead."

For this week’s #MoMuse, I decided to highlight a talented artist and business women fresh out of the 804.
Ronnie Luxe is a dynamic singer/songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. In an era of music where the “soul” component of the R&B genre has become less prominent, Ronnie is committed to not only restoring, but also magnifying an authenticity of soul that R&B in today’s climate is lacking. Having begun singing in the choir at 5 years old, Ronnie’s thorough experience as a vocalist illuminates every track her voice graces.
While she’s been singing for the overwhelming majority of her life, Ronnie took her time in finding the lane she wanted to operate in, as a musician. While in college, Ronnie was a popular member of the Ebony Impact Gospel Choir before branching off and locking in on her career as a solo artist. She released her first song in 2017, and has been consistently building since.
Get to know Ronnie Luxe through our Q&A interview below.
Courtesy of Ronnie Luxe
What made you want to be in the music industry?
I love the freedom that can come with being in this industry. I am aware that in certain aspects that “freedom” can be stifled but as a born creative I love that in this industry creative/artistic expression is heavily appreciated. I love that there doesn’t have to be certain “boundaries” that we have to stick within. I’ve never seen myself as stuck in an office or anything uptight like that. I like to do what I want, when I want, and how I want. I think this industry is perfect for that type of person.
What would you say is your greatest weakness/strength?
I think my greatest strength is my ability to adapt to the surroundings and situations around me. I say that because in life, it’s almost impossible to predict what you will encounter on your journeys to wherever it is you’re going. If you’re teachable and able to adapt, you’ll be able to learn how to maneuver through what many deem as “impossible” obstacles in your way.
I think it’s important to remember that the path may not always look like you thought it would so being able to be fluid along the way allows you to appreciate the experiences in a more fulfilling way. I think my greatest weakness is probably my emotions (I’m working on them). I’m a super sensitive person and I think sometimes my emotions can get the best of me and cloud my judgment if I allow them to.
Courtesy of Ronnie Luxe
How do you build relationships with creatives and industry individuals?
I like to build relationships with creatives as organically as possible. It usually begins as a mutual admiration/acknowledgement of one or the others artistry. I like to collaborate as much as I can as long as the vibes between both parties are cohesive. I personally prefer to work with and connect with people I have built some type of rapport with through in-person meetings, basically, spending quality time with others to actually get to know them outside of just the music/art.
How do you deal with uncomfortable situations when you’re working?
When dealing with uncomfortable situations I tend to aggressively push myself through them. I very much believe in self talk techniques so I will repeat affirmations to myself/have conversations with myself to encourage myself through whatever obstacle I may be facing. I usually pray too, I talk to God as much as I talk to myself for support whenever I’m feeling like a situation may seem bigger than myself. Another thing I like to keep in mind, if something is uncomfortable there must be opportunity for growth. That alone sometimes is enough to push me through.
Name some artists you like to listen to during your work sessions (photoshoots, painting,
brainstorming, etc.)?
I love all kinds of music but mainly Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Gucci Mane, Boosie, Ari Lennox, Anita Baker, Kem, Nipsey Hussle, and Maxwell.
Courtesy of Ronnie Luxe
What are some tips you can give other young women in the industry?
Some tips I’d like to give to other young women in the industry is to always stay true to who you are and KNOW YOUR WORTH. I know it sounds cliché but it’s so important. I think one of the best things you can do for yourself is hold on to your authenticity. In this industry, there are so many influences both negative and positive. I think to remain true to who you are is the golden ticket to true success.
I know sometimes it seems like if you bend your standards and values you may be able to “get ahead” quicker but that often leads to destruction in the long run. To remain true to your soul and character may not breed the fastest results but it will most definitely be the most rewarding route to take. To me, this ties in with knowing your worth, knowing who you are and WHO you are, knowing your limits, sticking to your boundaries. Ultimately these things are keys to self-love and preservation, which you will need in order to sustain the long haul.
If you have to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Thorough, fluid, and luminous.
Make sure to follow Ronnie Luxe on Twitter and Instagram. You can listen to Ronnie Luxe’s latest EP, “Rabbit Hole” on all music streaming platforms.

We’ve known Robyn Ottolini for a few years now, watching her put in work as a songwriter, singer, and performer. We saw her in 2016 as a semi-finalist in the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, watched her onstage in Cobourg at the Country Wild festival, and have listened as she released her EPs (Classic, 2019 & I’m Not Always Hilarious, 2020). And now we’re catching up with her as she prepares to kick-off her Backyard Songwriters Stories tour.
We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into every single live music plan for this summer, so to see Robyn and her performing partners (Alexa Goldie, Travis Eugene, Matt Gunn, and Sarah Wickett) getting set to play live for fans is wonderful. We asked about that – and more – but first, let’s get to a round of 5 Quick Questions!
Back in October, we caught up with Robyn and she did a written round of 5 Quick Questions, so this time, we got her new questions and she turned on the camera to answer them.
Related: Robyn Ottolini, Good Sh*t Q&A and 5 Quick Questions
Hit play to find out which album she’s listening to by the pool, who she’d love to tour with, and more!
5 Quick Questions with Robyn Ottolini
youtube
Now, get to know Robyn a little more, find out about the shows, the F-150 Remix, her (previously) unknown entertainment choices, and more in our new Q&A.
And if you want to know more about her, find her on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram and check ’em out.
Robyn Ottolini Q&A
1) You’ve found a way to play some live shows coming up in Newcastle, Peterborough, Uxbridge, and Beaverton – how did those come together, and do you think you’re going to be planning more to come after those four?
Robyn Ottolini) They came together fast. I went to Andrew Hyatt’s backyard shows and immediately after my manager wanted to do them and of course, I want to do them because you can only do so many internet concerts until you get lonely! They’re all physically distanced and safe. It strips everything back to the basics. We’re in a backyard, telling stories and playing some tunes we wrote. I’m just stoked to respond to people and see reactions. That’s what I feed off of and these shows are gonna be fantastic. [email protected] for info and tickets.
2) We all know it’s a real bummer that we’ve missed festival season this year, and you posted on your social media about missing Boots & Hearts. What is the #1 thing you miss about going to Boots or any festival?
Robyn) My favourite part about music festivals is that your one job, for four days (or however many) is literally to just watch music. That’s it. That’s your one job. Make sure you get to the concerts. That’s all you have to do. Absolute heaven.
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
3) Let’s put some good vibes and hopes and dreams out into the world – what is something in your career that you’ve thought about or started planning that you hope to accomplish in the near or distant future?
Robyn) Might be shooting big (or small?) depends on your perspective I guess… anyway, my dream is to be a career writer/get a publishing deal. Songwriting is the most relaxing thing and my happiest place. You can always get better and never be the best and I love the challenge of that. So boom, that’s the dream. Might be close, might be far but I’m pretty determined to get there.
4) You released the F-150 Remix, what was that process like, and how did it feel to give a new life or different life to one of your songs?
Robyn) I love pop music. I grew up strictly country, love country until the day I die but I love the cross-over. I love pop melodies and the way they’re more risky with what they say in the lyrics. So it was fun to turn one of my sad songs into a little bit of a dancing groove and bring those pop elements that I admire into a country song.
youtube
5) What has been your favourite part about doing your Good Shit News Network shows on Instagram live?
Robyn) Looking up all the good things happen in the world and brightening people’s day. Also the wine. Definitely the wine.
6) Last one for a little something extra, can you tell us all something that we wouldn’t find on your social channels or in a Google search. (example: a hidden talent)
Robyn) This is tricky. I’m a pretty open book when it comes to my songs, writing and social media. I’m pretty sure you already know I love the ocean and shark conservation but did you know… I love reality tv? That is some gooooood shit. I love watching people do weird inappropriate things that we’re all guilty of for the world to see. Cinematic brilliance. *chefs kiss*
Thanks for having me guys ❤
Big thanks to Robyn for taking the time to answer the Q&A questions and for her round of 5 Quick Questions. If you’re in or near Newcastle, Peterborough, Uxbridge, or Beaverton, we suggest you grab a ticket and check out the show!

How to Improve Problem Solving Skills
Jeffery Yuan
April 24, 2019
Why Problem-solving skills matters
Problem Solving and troubleshooting
Is fun
Is part of daily work
Solve the problem, get things done
Work More efficiently
With more confidence
Less pressure
Go home earlier
Solve the problem when needed
It’s your responsibility if it blocks you, the team
How to Solve a Problem
Understand the problem/environment first
Understand the problem before google search otherwise it may just lead you to totally wrong directions.
Find related log/data
Copy/Save logs/info/findings that may be related
Check the Log and Error Message
Read/Understand the error message
Where to find log
Common places: /var/log
From command line:
-Dcassandra.logdir=/var/log/cassandra
Case Study – The Log and Error Message
Problem: Failed to talk Cassandra server: 10.10.10.10
Where 10.10.10.10 comes from?
gfind . -iname '*.jar' -printf "unzip -c %p | grep -q 10.10.10.10' && echo %p\n"
or search in corporate github/code base
It comes from commons2 project; check what’s the current settings in Github
Now the problem and solution is clear
Just upgrade commons2 to latest version
Source code is always the ultimate truth
Find related code in Github
Find examples/working code
Understand how/why the code works by running and debug the code
Check the log with the code
Most problems can be solved by checking log and source code
Reproduce the problem
Find easier way to reproduce them
main method, unit test, mock
Simplify the suspect code
Find the code related, remove things not realtedUse
Reproduce locally
Connect to the remote data in local dev
Remote debug
Last resort, slow
Solving Problem from Different Angles
Sometime we find problem in production and we need code change to fix it
Try to find a workaround by changing database/Solr or other configuration
We can fix code later
Find Information Effectively
Google search: error message, exception
Search source code in Github/Eclipse
Search log
Search in IDE
Cmd+alt+h, cmd+h
Search command history
history | grep git | grep erase
history | grep ssh | grep 9042
history | grep kubectl | awk ‘{$1="";print}’ | sort -u
Find Information Effectively Cont.
Know company’s internal resource
where to find them
Know some experts (in company) you can ask help from
How to Troubleshoot and Debug
Don’t overcomplicate it.
In most cases, the solution/problem is quite simple
Troubleshooting is about thinking what may go wrong.
Track what change you have made
Resource About Troubleshooting
Debug It!: Find, Repair, and Prevent Bugs in Your Code
Urgent Issues in Production
Collaborate and share update timely
Let others know what you are testing/checking, the progress, what you have found, what you will do next
Ask for help
Before
Try to understand the problem and fix it by yourself first
If this applies: not urgent
Where and Who
Coworkers
Involve more people: the team, related teams
Stackoverflow
Specific forums
http://bit.ly/2QHXwq4
Google Groups
Github issues
Ask in multiple channels
How to Ask Help
Provide more context and info
log, stack trace or any information that may help others understand the problem
Provide what you have found, tried
Ask help once for same/similar/related issues
Learn more
The knowledge: root cause, etc
Learn their thinking process
how they approach this problem (logs, code), tools
Fix same/similar/related problems in other places
People make same mistakes in different places
Example: GetMapping(value = "/config/{name:.+}")
Knowledge
Be prepared
Learn how to debug/troubleshooting
Learn tools used for debugging
Learn framework, library, products, services used in your project
Apache/Tomcat configuration
How to manage/troubleshoot Cassandra/Kafka/Solr
Know what problem may happen, code change recently
Knowledge cont.
Common Problems
Different versions of same library
mvn dependency:tree
mvn dependency:tree -Dverbose -Dincludes=com.amazonaws:aws-java-sdk-core
Tools
Tools - Eclipse
Use Conditional Breakpoint to Execute Arbitrary Code (and automatically)
Use Display View to Execute Arbitrary Code
Find which jar containing the class and the application is using
MediaType.class.getProtectionDomain().getCodeSource().getLocation()
Breakpoint doesn’t work
Multiple versions of same class or library
Practice - Connect to the remote data in local dev
Create a tunnel to zookeeper and solr nodes
Add a conditional breakpoint at CloudSolrClient.sendRequest(SolrRequest, String)
before LBHttpSolrClient.Req req = new LBHttpSolrClient.Req(request, theUrlList);
theUrlList.clear(); theUrlList.add("http://localhost:18983/solr/searchItems/"); theUrlList.add("http://localhost:28983/solr/searchItems/"); return false;
Tools - Decompiler
GUI: Bytecode-Viewer
alias decom=“java -jar /Users/jyuan/apple/tools/misc/Bytecode-Viewer-2.9.11.jar”
CFR
Best, Support java8
Tools - Java
jcmd: One JDK Command-Line Tool to Rule Them All
jcmd Thread.print
jcmd GC.heap_dump
Thread dump Analyzer
http://fastthread.io/
Heap dump Analyzer
Eclipse MAT
VisualVM
Tools - Splunk
Syntax
Expand messages to show all fields
Click Format on the top and select All lines for the Max Lines setting
After search and find the problem, use nearby Events +/- x seconds to show context
Tools - Misc
Search Contents of .jar Files for Specific String gfind . -iname '*.jar' -printf "unzip -c %p | grep -q 'string_to_search' && echo %p\n" | s
nc -zv, lsof, df, find, grep
Fiddler
Problem Solving in Practice
Example: Redis cache.put Hangs
Get thread dump, figure out what’s happening when read from cache
Read related code to figure out how Spring implements @Cacheable(sync=true) RedisCache$RedisCachePutCallback
Check whether there’s cacheName~lock in redis
When use some feature, know how it’s implemented.
Practice - Iterator vs Iterable
What’s the problem in the following Code?
@Cacheable(key = "#appName") public Iterator<Message> findActiveMessages(final String appName) {}
Practice - Iterator vs Iterable
How to find the root cause
Symptoms: The function only works once in a while: when cache is refreshed
Difference between Iterator vs Iterable
Don’t use Iterator when need traverse multiple times
Don’t use Iterator as cache value
Practice 2 - Spring Cacheable Not Working
The class using cache annotation inited too early
Add a breakpoint at the default constructor of the bean, then from the stack trace we can figure out why and which bean (or configuration class) causes this bean to be created
Understand how spring cache works internally, spring proxy
CacheAspectSupport
Post Mortem
Reflection: Lesson Learned
How we find the root causeWhy it takes so long
What we have learned
What’s the root cause
Why we made the mistake
How we can prevent this happens again
Share the knowledge in the team via wiki, quip, email etc.
Take time to solve problem, find the root cause, but only (take time to) solve it once
Think More
Think over the code/problem, try to find better solution even the issue’s solved
Everything that stops you from working effectively is a problem
Fix them
Bonus
Building Troubleshooting-Friendly Application
Return meaningful error code and response
Return debug info that can check from response when requested
Should be safe to use or protected
Add requested_id in client (automatically when provide client application)
Mock User Feature
Preview Feature
How to write test efficiently
Learn and Use Hamcrest, Mockito, JUnit, TestNG, REST Assured
Add Static Import in Eclipse
Preferences > Java > Editor > Content Assist > Favorites, then add:
org.hamcrest org.hamcrest.Matchers.* org.hamcrest.CoreMatchers.* org.junit.* org.junit.Assert.* org.junit.Assume.* org.junit.matchers.JUnitMatchers.* org.mockito.Mockito org.mockito.Matchers org.mockito.ArgumentMatchers io.restassured.RestAssured

This Old Marketing Farewell Episode: Sometimes the End Is a Beginning
PNR: This Old Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose can be found on both iTunes and Stitcher.
In our grand finale episode, Robert kicks things off by pondering the decision to end something, so that something else can begin. We answer listener-submitted queries, and ask a few of our own; then we sign off with a final farewell inspired by a few of the greats.
Download this week’s PNR: This Old Marketing podcast
//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/6035059/height/360/width/640/theme/legacy/autonext/no/thumbnail/yes/autoplay/no/preload/no/no_addthis/no/direction/backward/
PNR: The Q&A
At the risk of getting all sentimental, Robert and I wanted to spend our last PNR podcast revisiting some of our favorite discussion topics, recalling a few of our personal content marketing triumphs, and passing along a bit of advice we’ve received over the years in the hopes that it will help you achieve greater triumphs in your own career.
Below are a few of the highlights, which we are sharing here as a thank you to all of our listeners for following our journey through 211 episodes of Pulizzi & Rose: This Old Marketing. Of course, we encourage you to listen to the podcast to hear the whole conversation, along with a few little surprises.
The entire PNR experience has been a labor of love for Robert and me – and the response from our audience has been both humbling and gratifying. We hope you take our thoughts to heart (though perhaps a few of them should be taken with a grain of salt, too) and that they encourage you to discover what you are most passionate about – as a content marketer and a person.
Will Apple really ever buy Disney? What about buying just a [smaller] part of the company, like ESPN? (15:23)
Joe Pulizzi: I believe that some time next year there is going to be talk of this happening, and it will be consummated some time in 2019. Then, I’m going to say, “I don’t know what took them so long.” But they’re big companies. It’s complex. Mergers and acquisitions of these type, they don’t just happen overnight. Of course, I’ll probably have to be consulted in the decision.
Robert Rose: You can just get over yourself because it’s not going to happen. But here’s what is going to happen. Disney is going to make a purchase, and it will do so before the end of the year. That purchase will, of course, be 21st Century Fox (Editor’s note: This deal was confirmed on December 14, 2017)… I think it’s a great deal – it’s the reunion of Marvel. It makes perfect sense. Overall, we’re starting to see increasing consolidation of media. That consolidation is all about gaining access to audiences, which of course is what we’ve been preaching for a long time.
.@Disney is going to make a purchase before the end of the year, predicts @robert_rose. #ThisOldMarketing Click To Tweet

Will advertising (paid media) completely die, and/or will it get replaced by content marketing? (29:32)
JP: Nothing ever dies. There will always be good reasons to advertise. You need to have a good, solid marketing mix. But I’d like to see more organizations advertise their content so that they could build their audiences that way, instead of just advertising for some kind of a product pitch or whatever. (As long as there’s a My Pillow, there is going to be advertising.)
So, advertising is not going away, and content marketing is not going to replace it. But, I think that those companies that are truly innovative, that truly have a strategic way of thinking and looking at the approach of content marketing, are going to be very successful with it.
Advertising is not going away & #contentmarketing is not going to replace it. @joepulizzi #ThisOldMarketing Click To Tweet
RR: I think paid media and advertising are going to go into a renaissance. I think there could be something disruptive in the advertising space, in much the same way that search advertising disrupted the space in the early 2000s. It could be some combination of native plus human-curated content, plus artificial intelligence… something where high-quality paid placement of content will begin to really innovate this space. And it’s a space that needs to be innovated in the worst way.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: 8 Ways Intelligent Marketers Use Artificial Intelligence
What podcasts should we listen to, now that PNR is ending? (45:17)
JP: There’s nowhere else to go. Just kidding. No, there’s a lot of really good ones out there. I listen to Mitch Joel’s Six Pixels of Separation podcast. For a different twist, I really like what Jay Acunzo is doing with Unthinkable. Though it’s not a marketing podcast, I also listen to The James Altucher Show – I like it because I get a lot of really good story-writing ideas on things that I didn’t necessarily know a lot about before. For content creation, the Copyblogger FM podcasts are all good. They really talk about different forms of content creation, from audio, to textual, to video.
RR: I would second all of those, and would also add in Exponent – the James Allworth and Ben Thompson podcast. I listen to it weekly – though it’s more of a cultural investment in technology than a marketing-specific show. I also like the Entrepreneur on Fire podcast, HBR’s Ideacast, and The Tim Ferriss Show. And if you’re on the small-biz side, I’d recommend the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast by John Jantsch.

Besides working with CMI, what has been your best professional decision you’ve made in your life, and why? (49:40)
RR: I would point to two things: The first is when I gave up on climbing the corporate ladder and decided to join friends at Crownpeak (a tech startup) to work with something I could be passionate about and love doing.
The second one was when my wife and I decided to move to Washington, DC from LA. It was this decision that helped me get focused on my business goals. Before that I was focused on form over function – life goals, rather than business. In DC, I met my spiritual mentor, who helped me see a need to re-pivot my goals around the function. It was the best move I made because it helped me realize that I had achieved all my goals – just in a different form than I had envisioned. So, the advice I would like to pass along to college students is: Don’t get caught up in the form, think about the function of what you want to do every day, and that will lead you to more happiness and satisfaction.
Think about the function of what you want to do daily & that will lead you to more happiness. @robert_rose Click To Tweet

What is your best advice to someone who wants to get started in the content marketing industry? (1:09:19)
JP: Go learn how to build a loyal and trusted audience. Create fantastic experiences throughout any content and storytelling you create. If you can do this effectively – around photography, or butterfly catching, or whatever you like to do – when you go in for a job in content marketing and you can say, “I built an audience, and this is how I’ve done it,” you will absolutely pave your way to any job you want.

HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: 4 Ways to Shift Your Thinking to Truly Focus on Your Audience
A few parting thoughts …
Back in 2016, Seth Godin wrote a post called Transitions. In it, he says, “Coming and going matter far more than what happens in the middle.”
Coming and going matter far more than what happens in the middle, says @ThisIsSethsBlog. Click To Tweet
Opening things, closing them, tearing off the bandage, losing something, meeting someone new, getting on the airplane, getting off of it, being greeted, elections, ending a feud. We mistakenly spend most of our time thinking about, working on, and measuring the in-between parts, imagining that this is the meat of it; the important work. In fact, humans remember the transitions because it’s moments of change and possibility and trepidation that light us up.
I’ve had the immense pleasure of being part of 200+ productions of This Old Marketing with my friend and brother, Robert Rose. Each one of those episodes provided some learning for me, and hopefully for you. But of all those episodes, I’ll remember the decision to launch and produce the first episode and the one you just listened to, our last episode, the most. These two moments will always stick out as special in my mind.
The 200+ #ThisOldMarketing episodes provided some learning for me & hopefully for you. @joepulizzi Click To Tweet
Is Seth right? Is it the beginnings and endings that matter? To grow and ultimately to reach the goals we set, we need to make big decisions. I hear and see this every day with the listeners of this podcast: “We need to fire an agency or a content creator… or hire an agency or content creator.” Sometimes we need to kill off one program in order for another one to flourish. Sometimes we need to take a stand for what we believe in… and sometimes we have to walk away.
Staying in the middle like stasis is always the easiest course. It’s also the most dangerous. In my experience, that’s where most of the universe lives, in the middle – safe and without risk, but also without growth. The short-term pain of the decision usually ends up being worth it because of that amazing possibility of making something truly great. Is ending this podcast a good decision at this time in this place? I think so; but we could be wrong.
As Amelia Earhart so famously said, “The most difficult thing is the decision to act.” Robert and I are acting by closing this chapter called This Old Marketing. Frank Herbert says, “There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.” With your help, Robert and I have told our story, but this is not the end. Now it’s your turn to turn the page and hopefully take a little bit of this podcast with you. Thank you for being part of this amazing journey with us. Now, it’s your story to continue to tell. Tell it well.
Thanks for being part of this amazing journey. @joepulizzi @robert_rose #ThisOldMarketing Click To Tweet

State of the Bar: 2018 Cocktail Trends
For the unfamiliar—or the unimpressed—cocktail culture can seem unapproachable. But to enjoy the cutting edge of cocktails in 2018 means to simply enjoy the ride by letting your curiosity lead you to new flavors and exciting drinks. So what’s the future hold for cocktail trends in 2018? Some past trends continue with new twists. New flavors quench drinker’s tastes, and more. Familiarize yourself with these new drinks and order them when they appear on your favorite bar’s new menu.
Flavor of the House: Vermouth Trends
Amaro, or Italian bitters; vermouth from Italy, France, or Spain; have all been gaining traction and inspiring bartenders for a couple years now. But it’s growth seems to be in no danger of slowing. And as low-alcohol cocktails become less of a trend and more of a staple of new age cocktail culture, vermouths, amari, and other low-alcohol liqueurs will continue to be used and tinkered with for cocktail menus. One way they’ll be tinkering?
House Made Vermouth
House infused vodka was a nascent feature of the blossoming cocktail revolution that gained popularity because it was so easy to do. You didn’t need to know the science of molecular mixology to slice cucumbers or jalapeño and soak the flavoring agents in a mason jar of call vodka. Anyone could do it. The spirit of house crafted flavors was contagious. Cocktail enthusiasts are now taking that same infused ethos to spice up table wines and make their own vermouth.
This is a great way to be on trend and add depths of flavors to cocktails. It also adds some fun to low-ABV cocktails that are still gain attention nationwide.
Sherry Vermouth
There is another rising sub-trend in the vermouth craze. Egor Polonsky of distributor Southern  Wine and Spirits, notes that he is excited about “Sherry-based vermouth. Like La Copa by Gonzales Byass.”
Sherry vermouth is often a richer, spiced version of Italien, or sweet vermouth, despite the fact that there is often less sugar in sherry based vermouths. These are great to sip on their own, but add depth and spice to cocktails like the classic Manhattan.
Vegetable Inspired Cocktails
Culinary cocktails have been a big part of restaurant cocktail programs for some time now. But they regularly featured fruits or house made syrups and tonics. Vegetable juices and syrups are now beginning to make their mark on the cocktail scene. These flavors can surprise, with juices from carrots or root vegetables like beets. Have you ever had mezcal and beets? It’s a delicious and surprising combination.
Sustainable
Bartenders are becoming more conscious about the waste created in bars and restaurants. Tale of the Cocktail hosted their first Sustainability Summit, which has a focus on biodiversity in agriculture. As the movement grows in bar programs in the U.S. and abroad, the use of vegetables will increase as a way to utilize and take advantage of the full range of agriculture grown and produced on farms.
Paloma Cocktail
When you think of refreshing Mexican cocktails, you probably think of a Margarita, right? You wouldn’t be wrong, but you should also give attention to another favorite Mexican tippling favorite: The Paloma.
As American palates become more accustomed to bitter flavors in their cocktails, the Paloma is primed to become a new favorite. Traditionally made with grapefruit Jarritos, a soft drink from Mexico, American soda companies like Q Soda are creating grapefruit sodas with Palomas specifically in mind. The cocktail mixes tequila with grapefruit, lime juice, soda, and some salt.
Here’s the a recipe for a Paloma from Saveur:
2 oz. tequila blanco
Juice of half a lime (~.75 oz. of juice)
3 oz. grapefruit juice
3 oz. seltzer
1 pinch of Salt
Lime wedge, for garnish
The fact that soda companies are now making a push to produce ready made grapefruit sodas for bars, which could be more widely available than the traditional Jarritos, means that more soda companies will be hopping on the grapefruit wagon. The viral and IRL popularity of flavored sodas like LaCroix is showing that the market is ready for more flavored sodas. An eager crowd for grapefruit soda gives the paloma a chance to make waves like the new audience for ginger beer propelled moscow mules into a new classic.
Top Shelf Cocktails
The Cadillac Margarita is a top shelf relic from 1990s bartending. But the idea of using top shelf ingredients like how the Cadillac makes use of Grand Marnier instead of triple sec and reposado tequila instead of blanco, is catching on in the bartending world.
Most bars look to make the best cocktails with quality ingredients, but also want to make sure their drinks are affordable for customers. That will always be the main goal, but bartenders are becoming less finicky about mixing high end, premium spirits in cocktails. The trend is beginning in perhaps the most cliched space, the first proper cocktail bar in Brooklyn, the Clover Club. The bar is offering a new menu titled “The Reserve” which calls for higher end cocktails, like Wild Turkey Rare Breed in their manhattan and Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye in the cocktail, The Fixer.
Bars won’t only offer these high end cocktails, but taking cue from the Clover Club will result in more reserve cocktail lists, similar to Captain’s List in the wine world.
Vintage Spirits
History has always been one of the most important factors in the cocktail revival. From books like David Wondrich’s Imbibe to old cocktail standards being resurrected and tweaked for the modern drinker. Now, more and more bars are seeking out and finding old, vintage bottles of booze. These are great to see how labels change, but also the spirits themselves are constructed differently. Ingredients that fell out of fashion due to cost and supply, or even ones that aren’t legal to put in drinks anymore (don’t worry, they’re safe to enjoy).
Milk Room, a bar at the Chicago Athletic Association hotel, has been one of the pioneers in this niche movement. Don’t expect vintage spirits to take over, the finite availability and legwork required to procure these bottled relics is an immovable gatekeeper for this trend hitting the mainstream. But if you find yourself near a bar that offers these spirits, don’t miss out.
This is the first 2018 Beverage Trend Piece in our series. Check back for more.

Excuse me …. Please empty your pockets …. I think you stole my heart.
Every girl deserves a guy who will say, “I can’t imagine my life without you”.
I hate boys who will continue to argue with a female. You will never win. Girls keep going until they get the last word, or piss you off.
You will find a girl prettier than me, smarter than me, and funnier than me, but you will never find a girl just like me.
I’m a girl. I overreact. I underestimate. I overestimate. I over think everything. I dream big. And when I say I love you, I’m not lying!
The sweetest things you can do for a girl are the little things that let her know she’s in your heart and on your mind.
I’m not one in a million kind of girls. I’m once in a lifetime kind of woman.
A woman brought you into this world. Therefore you have no right to disrespect one.
Silence is a girls loudest cry. You know she’s really hurt when she starts ignoring you.
Women are like stars, there are millions of them out there, but only one can make your dreams come true.

When a girl cries, it’s not usually over one thing. It’s built up anger and emotions that she’s been holding in for too long.
I`m a girl but I rather hang out with boys because it is less drama.
Best feeling ever is when you lose weight, and your boobs stay the same size.
