An attempt at reviewing EVERY horror movie I watched in october
[[MORE]]
Truth or Dare (2017): not to be confused with the one with Lucy Hale and Landon Liboiron, although ironically they both star degrassi actors (and wow, does Ricardo Hoyos’ character suffer in this one!). I thought this was really thrilling, and tbh I was shocked to find out it’s a tv movie because it’s so gory. The ending seemed unpopular online, but tbh I loved the bordering on thelma and louise ending.
Polaroid: all in all it’s not very memorable, but tbh the plot twist about the truth about the cop and the girl who died was so heartbreaking and made me cry :(
School Spirit: apparently this is an episode of a tv show called Into The Dark, but Hulu has it as a movie. SPOILER ALERT: Farkle is the killer. i kind of laughed just because, you know,it’s Farkle, but I thought he was decent. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer: I somehow have never seen this. Now I finally know the origin of Brenda in Scary Movie…she’s clearly Brandy in this! (I loved Brandy in the movie. Happy they didn’t kill her off). Hated the ending.
Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism: literally don’t even remember this one.
Deadly Friend: LOVED this one! Kristy Swanson was so good! However, it has what has got to be one of the worst endings in cinematic history…
The Babysitter Killer Queen: the first one was way better, but it was fun. Obviously Samara Weaving’s borderlin cameo was the best part. Side note, but Jenna Ortega will always be Little Jane to me,i don’t think I can handle seeing her get killed in Scream 5 lol
Friday the 13th: Final Chapter: this one is weird because it has an iconic/amazing ending,Tommy and Trish are legends, but the parts without them…what even is the plot? They don’t even know any of the kids who get slaughtered. But again, amazing ending.
Endless Love: this is a You style horror movie and you can’t convince me otherwise. In fact,I think Penn Badgley might have taken inspiration from Martin Hewitt. Amazing movie. Friday the 13th: of course I love it and it’s a classic but SyFy’s airing butchered it! They cut out some death scenes….
Halloween Kills: YES. LOVED IT. Loved all the actors too.
The Stepfather: more of a thriller than horror. I loved it,but I think if I wrote it,I would have made it so Penn Badgley and Amber Heard’s characters were siblings rather than boyfriend and girlfriend. Partially because I hated the unneeded sexy stuff, but also because it would have fit the family theme better. (Fun fact: Skyler Samuels plays his actual sister, but she’s basically an extra. I loved seeing her so young though!)
Secret Window: again, more thriller than horror. Loved Johnny Depp’s acting but the ending was….a little off.
The Exorcist 3: love George C Scott and Brad Dourif in the movie. I wish they hadnt forced the director to make it an exorcist sequel though. (random fact: my dad worked at a bar Jason Miller would always go to in Scranton and says he was mean.)
Stage Fright: LOVE IT. Hilarious. The killer is extremely easy to figure out though. Also,Ephraim Ellis (Rick Murray) is in it. (so is Dan Levy, but it’s only one line).
Untitled Horror Movie: same director as Truth or Dare, starring and written by Luke Baines who played one of the main characters in that. My only real complaint is I wish they let Claire Holt keep her accent! Also,at first I thought they were all filming in the same house, but then I realized it’s just that their houses all look very similar.
The Collingswood Story: the og unfriended from 2002. Unfortunately it’s boring as fuck.
Dracula AD 1972: sadly he’s only onscreen for 10 minutes, but I love the campy 70s vibes!
The Rage Carrie 2; I actually loved it. Things I didn’t like: killing Sue (especially since it was an accident and I highly doubt Rachel would have killed her on purpose) and the plot twist where Rachel was Carrie’s sister was way too over the top.
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave: fun but I liked Dracula 1972 way better.
Last Night In Soho: THIS MOVIE WAS EVERYTHING! i don’t want to say anything else because spoilers but SEE IT IN A THEATER!
Strait Jacket: the ending literally made me cry….Joan Crawford really was a good actress…

Luke Baines (Jonathan Morgenstern) responded to some fan questions:
Honestly, I did a lot bc he’s such a big character & Will played him so perfectly that I didn’t want to ruin that. Aside from reading, watching the show, other research, I worked with a criminologist who helped me better understand the psyche of a person who was raised as JCM was
I’m really interested to know what you all will think of 3x17... we worked really hard on it and it reveals a lot about Jonathan.
Not the scripts, but the call sheet which is a document that production sends out the night before shooting so you know what time to arrive on set and what scenes you’re filming.
I did not. I’m annoyingly serious on set. Also I spent most of 3B crying, so there wasn’t much time.
Shame it’s gonna be undone when you see me terrorize the cast. #RememberThisFeeling

Luke Baines (Johnathan):  ERCHOMAI: I am coming
Brian Hui (makeup artist) shared a photo: “Hmm, are you thinking about more than just chestnuts roasting over an open fire @LukeBaines ? #Shadowhunters
Taylor Mallory (writer) responded to a fan question: There’s a reason for the change! Book Val has white blonde hair so book Jon’s hair is a visual signifier of his Morgenstern blood. But bc flashbacks establish TV Val as brunette, TV Jon’s red hair is a stricking indicator of his blood connection to the family-and Clary. #BTS

Dominic Sherwood (Jace) tweeted: Thank you very much @richarddennen and tatlermagazine for including me. This was a lot of fun with some really great folks.

From Stephan James to Bülow, Meet This Year’s Rising Stars
In our Winter issue, FASHION editors rounded up the 100 people, products and experiences we think will blow up in 2019. It’s our inaugural Hot 100 Fuse List. From the workouts you’ll be doing, to the new designers and artists you’ll see on your feed, this is your guide to being in the know this year. These are the next young actors, musicians and entertainers who will be taking over Hollywood.

65. Lamar Johnson
Younger (or just dance-obsessed) readers might remember Johnson’s impressive moves from the Family Channel favourite The Next Step. But going forward, people will remember Johnson, who hails from the Six, for his vulnerable and powerful roles in the urgent The Hate U Give and Native Son, not to mention the new X-Men flick Dark Phoenix. But don’t worry: The man can still dance. –Greg Hudson

66. Betsy
Elizabeth Humfrey looks more like a designer for Balenciaga than a girl who grew up on a goose farm in rural Wales, but both things happen to be true. Humfrey, better known by her stage name Betsy, launched her career on the heels of a stint at the Parisian fashion house and a degree from the revered Central St. Martins in London. Catch her if you can. Armed with a bunch of fierce ballads and a voice that could stop Cher in her tracks, this diva won’t be kept down on the farm. –Jeremy Freed

67. Stephan James
In 2018, James starred in If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Moonlight. He also starred in Amazon’s drama series Homecoming, opposite needs-no-introduction Julia Roberts. It was, by all measures, a big year for any actor but especially for one who is still shy of his 25th birthday. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of a lot of really cool things, and there are a lot of projects that are coming my way now, which is really cool,” James says. Both of these projects premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to critical acclaim, a moment especially poignant for the Scarborough, Ont., native.
“TIFF has always been one of my favourite times of the year,” he says. James, who got his start back in 2010 as an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation, will appear next year in 17 Bridges alongside Chadwick Boseman, Sienna Miller, Taylor Kitsch and J. K. Simmons. “I’ve never done a film with this level of action,” he says. “So it’s an exciting film.” It’s probably safe to say that James can expect many more exciting firsts in the years to come. –Pahull Bains

68. bülow
In 2017, Megan Bülow was a virtually unknown 17-year-old high-school student in Holland. Then she released her first song, a synth-saturated, anti-romance anthem titled “Not a Love Song” that had music journalists across the web calling her a “pop genius.” The song went viral on SoundCloud and Spotify, but bülow (she dropped her first name and the capital B for her new gig in the spotlight) had to finish her senior year before becoming a full-fledged pop star. She wrote her final exams, and then the German-Canadian singer-songwriter moved to Toronto. The city welcomed her with open arms: bülow starred in Roots’s 2018 Sweatstyle campaign, performed at the iHeartRadio MMVAs and headlined a show at the iconic Mod Club. Up next? After her two successful EPs, fans are anxiously awaiting a full-length bülow album. We’re hoping 2019 will be the year. –Meghan McKenna

69. Elizabeth Debicki
This statuesque Australian actress is no new kid on the block—you might remember her as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby or the gold-dipped Ayesha in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2—but this is the year we can expect to see her catapult firmly into the spotlight. At TIFF, it was impossible to hear any chatter about Widows—the buzzy new thriller from Steve McQueen—that didn’t involve ebullient praise of Debicki’s performance. And that wasn’t her only big TIFF premiere of the year. The 28-year-old actress also stars as a fragile but incandescent Virginia Woolf in Vita and Virginia.–Pahull Bains

70. Mouthpiece
There is plenty the world doesn’t agree on these days, but there is perhaps no topic quite as contentious and thorny as feminism. Which is why Toronto-based playwrights/actors Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava’s film Mouthpiece is so remarkable. In the film, which is an adaptation of their 2015 play, Nostbakken and Sadava play two often-sparring versions of the same character’s internal monologue. The story follows Cassandra as she grapples with the reality of her mother’s sudden death, reflecting on how her mother’s own feminism shaped her. “Social media has created this condition of extreme views,” says Sadava. “We’ve stopped giving ourselves time to process anything because it’s just about reacting. This film shows a woman processing difficult things. We need to start that internal monologue again.” –Pahull Bains

71. Karena Evans
You know Karena Evans’s work even if you don’t know you know Karena Evans’s work. The Toronto native directed four of Drake’s 2018 music videos: “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” “I’m Upset” and “In My Feelings” as well as the video for SZA’s “Garden (Say It Like Dat)” featuring Donald Glover. Not content to just stay behind the camera, this past year she also starred in two feature films—Every Day and Firecrackers, the latter of which premiered at TIFF—and has a recurring role in Mary Kills People. Not too shabby for a 23-year-old. –Pahull Bains
