A great promo photo of Ian (my mum’s favorite) in the musical Trelawny with which the Bristol Old Vic reopened after its refurbishment. It proved a great success, transferring to London, first to the Sadler's Wells Theatre and later to the Prince of Wales Theatre. Nach der Zerstörung der Isla Nublar befreiten sich die Dinosaurier und füllten den Planeten. Den Menschen gelingt es, das empfindliche Gleichgewicht aufrechtzuerhalten, das das friedliche Zusammenleben auf der Erde bestimmt. Aber wie lange kann der Mensch seine Dominanz aufrechterhalten, indem er Seite an Seite mit den furchterregendsten Kreaturen der Geschichte lebt?

Gruppen von Söldnern durchkämmen auch den Planeten nach dem jugendlichen Klon Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), dessen DNA möglicherweise Geheimnisse für Biosyns Genwissenschaftler unter der Leitung von BD Wong birgt. Als Maisie zusammen mit Blue, dem Baby des halbdomestizierten Velociraptors, entführt wird, werden sie von den ehemaligen Mitarbeitern von Jurassic World, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) und Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), gejagt. Gleichzeitig untersucht Ellie Sadler (Dern) riesige Schwärme mutierter Heuschrecken und engagiert Alan Grant (Neill), um sie bei einem Besuch der Forschungseinrichtung auf Biosyn Island zu begleiten, wo Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) jetzt als Berater tätig ist. Jurassic World Dominion spielt sich als reisendes Abenteuer ab, das eher zu den Heldentaten von Indiana Jones oder Ethan Hunt passt als zu einem Ensemble aus alternden Wissenschaftlern und arbeitslosen Zoowärtern. Eine actiongeladene Sequenz in Malta, die von unterirdischen Dinosaurier-Basaren bis hin zu Hochgeschwindigkeits-Verfolgungsjagden auf der Straße reicht, fühlt sich an wie etwas aus einem Jason-Bourne-Multiversalfilm, anstatt aus der Fantasie von Michael Crichton heraufbeschworen zu werden. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte des Films sind alle endlich wieder vereint auf einer abgelegenen, von Dinosauriern verseuchten Insel, wo sich alles wieder normalisiert. Lewis Dodgson, CEO von Campbell Scott Biosyn, ist ein typischer Steve Jobs sozialer Introvertierter, endlos frustriert von der Engstirnigkeit der Menschen um ihn herum, die nur die katastrophalen Fehler in seiner kühnen neuen Vision sehen können. Andere Neuzugänge im Franchise, DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie und Dichen Lachman, tun ihr Bestes, um sich inmitten des wachsenden Chaos bemerkbar zu machen, und es gibt einen bemerkenswerten Versuch, Dinosaurier-Designs zu echten Arten zurückzubringen, indem sie die neuesten Theorien in Aussehen und Darstellung einbeziehen Verhalten. Letztendlich kann sich Jurassic World Dominion dem gleichen Gefühl des bevorstehenden Untergangs nicht entziehen, das die gleichnamigen Themenparks seit ihrer Gründung geplagt hat. Geblendet von dem Wunsch, unsere unendliche Faszination für diese riesigen Bestien der Vergangenheit weiter zu erforschen, haben Trevorrow und Co. aus den Augen verloren, was dieses Franchise überhaupt so besonders gemacht hat. Wenn sich die Dinosaurier selbst wie eine vertragliche oder sekundäre Verpflichtung innerhalb ihres eigenen Franchise anfühlen, ist es wahrscheinlich an der Zeit, das gesamte Unternehmen wieder zum Aussterben zu bringen. Während Jurassic Park III die Ebenen des Bösen vermissen lässt, endet Dominion weniger mit einem triumphierenden Brüllen als mit dem erschöpften Stöhnen eines Kindes, das bereit ist, nach Hause zu gehen.

Dieses Sequel-Remake, das darauf abzielt, die Saga der Dinosaurier zu beenden, hat den Geist alter Abenteuerfilme mit Betonung auf Action und Unterhaltung. Die Protagonisten der ersten Trilogie, die mit Jurassic Park (1993) beginnt, gesellen sich zu denen der zweiten, die mit Jurassic World (2015) beginnt, in diesem sechsten Film, dessen Erzählstruktur denselben Richtlinien folgt wie das Buch von Michael Crichton. Ändern, damit sich nichts ändert.

Canterbury done, Ashford next 1/3/2022

I’ve got to tell you, the Canterbury district song is mega catchy. Where the song starts slow and energetic rock towards the end!

The nice thing was on the song recording day, at Ian Sadler studio, I got a chance for my vocals to be featured in the song. I attend Square Pegs Singers at the Uni of Kent in Canterbury monthly on Saturdays so it partially counts.

It’s the same recording studio I attended to record the Square Pegs Christmas song, Christmas Harmony, back in 2014.

The recording studio was smaller than the one in Ramsgate. I did feel quite cramped with other people so I stayed in the recording booth, supporting those going in one at a time to sing in the microphone, by pointing at the lyrics across as prompt and support. Katie, the safe guarder at Square Pegs, was proud of me for doing this. 

This is making me a good facilitator.

The next district was Ashford. Myself Paul, Breanna and Adam went to Wyvern School in Great Chart, which is a Special Education school. We worked with a few pupils there. 

We had to do exactly the same tasks like what we did in Thanet and Canterbury. Make a spider diagram about what there is in the Ashford District,e.g. Kent and Sussex Railway in Tenterden, Ashford International station, McArthur Glen Outlet, Pluckley, Big Cat Sanctuary and Biddenden Vineyards.

Jurassic World: Dominion

When going into a movie, it’s vital that the viewer manage their expectations. After all, most films will fail to live up to whatever preconceived notions you maintain going into it. This remained true for me with Jurassic World: Dominion, just not in the way you might be thinking. 

You see, I expected Dominion to be bad. The first Jurassic World was worthless (I skipped the second) and Colin Trevorrow is a director whose capabilities as a writer and director, charitably, leave much to be desired. What I couldn’t have expected, however, even with expectations so thoroughly muted is just how thoroughly this movie would fall short even then. The bar was so low as to be halfway in the ground. Dominion manages to slip, trip over the bar and tumble haplessly into a pit, flailing wildly on its way to the bottom. 

Frankly, I’d rather sit through Trevorrow’s artless “original” Jurassic World twice before I ever have to watch a frame of Dominion ever again. It may have been a cacophonic swirl of largely idiotic imagery (a T-Rex literally walks away from an explosion like any run-of-the-mill action hero), but it at least ostensibly had something to say about the state of modern blockbusters and the audiences who gobble them up. Trevorrow may have completely undercut that thesis at every turn possible while lacking any semblance of self-awareness, but at least he had something on his mind while delivering the very thing he was criticizing. (See also: Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.) Dominion, on the other hand, has a moment so impossibly stupid (that is played entirely straight) it made me want to walk out that instant. 

But even taken on its own merits as a purely visceral, sensorial experience Dominion never even reaches the heights of The Lost World, a movie many consider to be the nadir of the entire Jurassic Park franchise. The Lost World isn’t a good movie, but it at least has a personality and manages to deliver a couple superb setpieces. Dominion wishes it had anything half as good as the cliffside T-Rex attack in The Lost World, but instead settles for “mostly decent” with scenes like the motorcycle chase in Malta or dino-induced plane crash. If you’re not going to even try to say something with your movie about evil corporations (it’s literally called BioSyn, I wish I was making this up) while having the audacity to give it a runtime of two-and-a-half hours, that thing better burst at the seams with cackle-worthy dinosaur carnage and fun character moments. The good stuff in here couldn’t even fill a barebones 90 minutes. Instead, I hope you like Apple CEO Tim Cook knock-offs and giant locusts because that’s what this movie is really about. 

Perhaps if Dominion could figure out which movie it wanted to be, things might be a bit more engaging. The problem is, Trevorrow couldn’t decide if he wanted to make a movie about parents desperately trying to rescue a baby raptor and their kidnapped surrogate daughter, or  a movie reuniting the Jurassic Park band for one last hurrah. Instead, he smooshed both together resulting in a lumbering monstrosity that ironically resembles one of the genetically fabricated dinosaurs that are found throughout this secondary trilogy. 

Adding insult to injury, the legacy characters of Ian Malcolm, Alan Grant and Ellie Sadler are all so atrociously written and feel so completely out of character that had there not been a cavalcade of meaningless callbacks to it, I’d question whether Trevorrow had even seen the original Jurassic Park at all. This feels especially true of Alan Grant. Sam Neill looks borderline embarrassed to be there and who could blame him. There’s not a single thing that character does or says that feels true to the character to the point where you could have subbed in someone named Grant Alan and no one would have known the difference.

Meanwhile, I don’t need or want a movie where Chris Pratt travels halfway across the planet because he made a promise to a velociraptor. I’ve joked since the first movie that Pratt is only capable of playing Owen Grady like he’s inhabiting his Burt Macklin persona from Parks & Rec. But “I promised a velociraptor I’d rescue her baby” is such a patently absurd premise that I am now convinced the Burt Macklin thing is his intended approach. Owen Grady is a 10 year old’s conception of a cool action adventure hero, but I’m not even sure a 10 year old would be dumb enough to follow through on a promise to a dinosaur. 

Maybe I shouldn’t have seen this in a double feature with the first Jurassic Park. Or maybe my animosity is due in large part because I came to it having just recently watched two incredible blockbusters: Top Gun: Maverick and the Indian-language historical epic RRR. The former a legacy sequel that is good in every way that this (quasi) legacy sequel is bad, and the latter one of the most electric, energizing feats of populist filmmaking I’ve seen in close to a decade. I finished those films immediately wanting to watch them again. If I see a frame of Jurassic World: Dominion ever again it’ll be too soon.

Quando Maisie é sequestrada, junto com o próprio bebê do velociraptor semi-domesticado Blue, os ex-funcionários do Jurassic World Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) e Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) perseguem. Simultaneamente, Ellie Sadler (Dern) está investigando enxames gigantes de gafanhotos mutantes e recruta Alan Grant (Neill) para acompanhá-la em uma visita às instalações de pesquisa da ilha de Biosyn, onde Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) agora é consultor. Jurassic World Dominion se desenrola como uma aventura itinerante mais adequada aos heroísmos de Indiana Jones ou Ethan Hunt do que um conjunto de cientistas idosos e tratadores desempregados. Uma sequência repleta de ação em Malta, que vai de bazares subterrâneos de dinossauros a perseguições de rua em alta velocidade, parece retirada de um filme multiversal de Jason Bourne, em vez de evocada da imaginação de Michael Crichton. Somente na segunda metade do filme, todos eventualmente se reúnem em uma ilha remota infestada de dinossauros, onde voltam aos negócios como de costume. O CEO da Biosyn da Campbell Scott, Lewis Dodgson, é um introvertido social típico de Steve Jobs, infinitamente frustrado pela estreiteza de mente daqueles ao seu redor que só conseguem ver as falhas cataclísmicas em sua nova visão ousada. Outros recém-chegados à franquia, DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie e Dichen Lachman, fazem o possível para fazer sentir sua presença em meio ao caos, e há uma tentativa notável de devolver os designs de dinossauros a espécies genuínas, incorporando as mais recentes teorias em aparência e comportamento. Em última análise, Jurassic World Dominion é incapaz de escapar da mesma sensação de destruição iminente que atormentou os parques temáticos de mesmo nome desde o início. Cegos pelo desejo de lucrar ainda mais com nosso fascínio sem fim por essas feras gigantes do passado, Trevorrow e companhia perderam de vista o que tornou essa franquia especial em primeiro lugar. Quando os próprios dinossauros começam a parecer uma obrigação contratual ou secundária dentro de sua própria franquia, provavelmente é hora de deixar todo o empreendimento voltar à extinção. Embora não seja um nível ruim de Jurassic Park III, Dominion conclui não tanto com um rugido triunfante, mas com o gemido exausto de uma criança pronta para ir para casa.
