#i'm going to be an elementary teacher
Text
I don't know if my elementary and middle school education was just leagues above some other schools or what, but sometimes I'm amazed at how much basic knowledge high-schoolers don't know

Is it just me or did the subplot with Gregory bother anyone else? I feel like he has a right to have privacy during his free time. I don't like that they guilted him for saying he was there to teach first graders. That's literally his job.

back on my talking in the tags bullshit like it's 2015 🫡
#i am feeling very Ack lately because i have abt ten months left to pay off my stupid ass student debt#which is exciting! i'm ready to go back to school!#but i have noooo idea what i'm going back for and i feel like i need to start firming up a decision so i can kind of get my ducks on a row#but like. girl. it's HARD#i have approximately 5/8 of an elementary education degree#and in an ideal world i would just finish it and become a teacher. boom done. i love teaching i LOVE it!!! i really do!!!#and i'm fucking good at it!!!#but we do not live in an ideal world. lol. i love being a teacher in theory but the reality of becoming a teacher in america#at this current moment.#where im essentially putting myself in the middle of a culture war where i am being casted as a criminal for Being Visibly GNC in front of#people's children. is not really ideal!!!!#and nkt to mention the gun violence and the fact that increasingly parents think they know better than teachers what should b taught and#TERRIBLLE pay a d tons of extra work w no administrative support#it just sounds. nkt great. to be honest.#but like.. what else do i do. i like the idea of mass comm w a production focus but i worry that i'll get disillusioned or dislike it once#it's what i Do...#and i could go back for the science-y stuff i wanted to do as a teenager and that sounds awesome but also#i think i am too dumb. lol. and i would be starting completely from scratch because all my science credits are like#Biology For People Who Just Need A Credit. yknow#and starting over wouldn't be the worst thing in the long run but it's so fucking daunting#i've already dropped out twice 😝🫶 i kinda just wanna finish it all in one fell swoop yknow#ANYWAYYYY. i have time i have so much time actually [shaking and crying and throwing up]

There's something really special when you don't have to worry about your stims bothering others because you're with people who don't mind your stims or bother you about it! 🥹
Shout out to people who let others stim freely and don't make a big deal about it. You have no idea how much that means!

That first panel of that comic I just reblogged randomly reminded me of that time when I was in kindergarten & I came home to find the door locked. My mom had always told me before school if she wasn't going to be home when I got home so I thought maybe she was just asleep or something & banged on the door for a while. I eventually concluded she wasn't home.
Normally, if she isn't going to be home, she would also tell me to go to Ms. Hilda's house (a little old lady across the road that we often visited), so I started walking back up the long ass gravel driveway. When I got to the end of the driveway, I saw Ms. Hilda tending the garden in her front yard. She looked up & called out to me, and I was initially relieved, but then suddenly I panicked. I was just filled with fear as the woman who was basically another grandma to be stood up and told me to come over.
I turned and ran as fast as my little legs could down the driveway, across the the backyard and into my father's shed. I locked the door and just started crying.
I heard Ms. Hilda knock on the door and tell me that my mom told her to that she and my grandmother went out to run errands, and to have me come over like I usually do when my mom isn't home. I refused to listen, refused to unlock the door. I just kept crying & saying that I wanted my mom.
I think I did eventually unlock the door for her, but I don't remember what else happened.

looking through my 8th grade science notebook n reflecting on that teacher's style and personality, and man, i think i might cry hahaha
#in a good way bc he was always so kind and earnest and forgiving#i think some kids thought his sincerity was cringe but *i* let myself have fun n now he's one of the teachers i most wanna be like#during study group today my classmates said they thought i'd be a good teacher someday bc of how clearly i laid out the processes#so now i'm going back to ye olde teacher thoughts bc i mean. that's gonna be real someday#n i'm finally writing down a lot of the things i realized through the years i learned from various teachers#what i liked abt their styles before i may have realized why they worked#i really don't know quite how to talk to kids in a way they understand (which is why i know i'm not gonna teach elementary school lol)#but i remember being in 8th grade n loving how clearly all the information was given to us-- it was obvious that the teacher had#written them himself just for us-- n like. this is basically my model for explaining things to kids#anyway the first thing i wrote down abt what i liked abt this teacher is 'made stories out of science n out of us as scientists'#n like. how can i not respect and admire the hell out of that as someone who love love loves story and art?#the way science and art became one... fucking immaculate dude!!!#anyway a lot of my most favorite teachers were; looking back; incredibly kind and considerate people#and i'm glad to have had the privilege of learning under them growing up#the man's not that old he's probably still teaching. i could like. add him on fb n ask to hang out at some point#bc now *i'm* curious abt how he got into teaching n how he developed his style#the worm speaks

What matters isn’t whether you like children or not, it’s whether you still treat them like the human beings with needs and wants who are deserving of respect that they are

Teaching is spending 9 hours at work with no break time and a 6 minute lunch, then coming home to do an hour of housework, resting for 30 minutes, and then working on your bilingual letter sound instruction plans because you just hit 15 students in your room and hell at this point all of them will benefit from the letter sound instruction.
