The 'Lympics
Sonic opened his door, which Tails so kindly installed, he was tired of not being able to slam one into Eggman's face every time he barged in. As the door swung open it revealed two short figures, their faces covered by the sun visors of their caps. Sonic’s eye widened. The visitors raised their heads revealing their faces. A pudgy face, big round nose, brown hair, bright blue eyes, and an instantly recognisable moustache now with grey creeping in due to the plumber’s age.
“Time to square up hedgehog.”
Beat.
Blink. Blink. “Is it Saturday already?”
The short plumber jumped up into the blue hedgehog’s arms who embraced the old friend in a hug.
---
Sonic welcomed the brothers into his home and poured each a cup of warm mint tea. “What? No coffee?”
“What you kidding? You got any idea how bad caffeine is for you?”
“You know tea has more caffeine than coffee, right?”
“What? No... No.”
Mario just laughed. They sat down at Sonic’s coffee table, well, tea table, I suppose.
“Where is Luigi gone to anyway?” Mario asked while looking around.
Sonic answered after taking a sip, “Said he wanted to meet with Tails so that he could take a look at his ghost pack.”
“Uh, I keep telling him to move out of that mansion. Daisy offered him a guest room at her castle, but no, he doesn't want to be a ‘freeloader.’” He used air quotes.
“So, I know game night is a tradition, but I'm guessing you didn't come here just to complain about your brother. Though that would be incredibly entertaining.”
“Heh, right you are." He placed down his cap and raises arms in excitement. “I'm getting married!”
Sonic was genuinely surprised, yet he replied nonchalantly, “That’s great. Congratulations.”
“I'm not rubbing it in, am I?”
“No, no, you're happily married and running a successful family business at the age of 30, and I'm running around collecting rings to pay off my beach house mortgage. Both are equal and good.”
“Oh, come on, it can't be all bad. Hey, I mean you definitely saved the world more times than me. I'm sure the villagers are thankful for that.”
A tomato flew through the window hitting Sonic in the head, a loud voice followed it, “We hate you Sonic the Hedgehog!”
“…”
“…Ah… uh, well, wha- why are we always talking about my love life? What about you? You and Amy? Huh?”
“No, no, heh, we're- we're just friends.” He said while smiling to himself just at the thought of her.
Mario smirked, “You like her.”
“No.”
“Yeah, you do!”
“No, I actually think she's really annoying and not endearing in anyway.”
“You LOVE her!”
“Shhh, quiet down. You're starting to sound like Tails.”
“Well, what about Sally?”
“I don't think she exists in this reality.”
“Elise?”
“…” he raised his brow.
“Alright, alright, low below.”
“You know now that I think about it I think I know someone who could use some yeah moustache care tips. He's across that large body of water, why don't you walk into it with your mouth open.”
“Oh ho ho, is that right? Let me ask you this, do these bandages make you more aerodynamic? Is your neck constantly cold?”
“I'm sorry which one of the Mario brothers owns a mansion and which one lives in a rundown apartment in Brooklyn? Oh right.”
“Yeah, well… well you look like Crash Bandicoot smothered in blue paint!”
The hedgehog was shocked in speechless, “… Ouch.”
“Ha! Ha!” Mario clapped his hands and rub them together like a fly in excitement.
“You're truly a wordsmith Mario. Is that how you manage to assemble such an impressive cast voice actors for your movie?”
Mario leaned in, “You wanna talk movies?”
Sonic leaned back, “Let's talk movies?”
“One Billion dollars! Nailed it the first time. It took you two tries to get it right.”
“You told your entire story in one movie. What's the sequel gonna be about? This time Yoshi’s here! I've got 30 years worth of stories to tell.”
“Oh, which movie are you gonna die, and who's gonna kiss your corpse?”
“We're gonna use the ups not the downs! I've got Idris Elba! Who do you have? A republican gun nut?”
“Oh, right, because Idris Elba’s performance in ‘Hijack’ was astounding?”
“He is a national treasure!”
“He's from the UK!”
“He's an international treasure!”
“I'm still a better kart driver.”
“Yeah, you need a car to win a race.”
The two rivals just looked at each other for a moment.
“…”
“…”
Both of them burst into laughter.
“Oh man, I missed you man.” Sonic reached over the table and gave his guest a friendly nuggie, messing up his brown and grey curly hair.
“Ugh, I liked you better when you were shorter. When did you get this tall?”
“Yeah, growth spirts, they’re crazy.”
"No, but seriously, you should tell her how you feel."
"... I'll... I'll think about it."
As Mario was taking a sip from his cup something came to his mind, “Mmm… I think we're forgetting something.” He snapped his fingers. “Got it. We have an announcement.”
“We do?”
Mario gave him a look.
“Ohhhhhh.”
They both turned to the camera. They spoke in unison.
“Sonic and Mario Olympics. Coming to every console.”
Mario: “I love you.”
Sonic: “And I hate you.”
The End

I have been distracted
Lots and lots has been going on. And none of it was in a place where I thought, “that’s done, I can blog about it now”. But a bunch have finished up and I should try to keep things updated.
First up: I bought a house.
Started house hunting in January, saw a whole bunch of places and learned just how crap the housing market is. Renting means you pay rent. Freehold means you pay a mortgage. Leasehold means you pay rent and a mortgage. The first place I viewed was a maisonette, which means the lower half of a two storey house but no stairs to go up. It had one bedroom and was so small that you couldn’t fit anything in there. It was empty and full at the same time. Other places were in bad areas, bad state of repair, charged to much on leasehold fees for too little service, or were far, far too expensive. I put offers in on a few places but got outbid. Finally I found a nice coach house (flat above garages) and managed to get offer accepted and all the masses of paperwork filed. It all went through in June.
That led to: decorating.
The previous owner left the coach house in a clean state, I just hated his design choices. Paperwork had to be pulled down, walls sanded, many surfaces painted, and several things replaced. There were lampshades left that we thought were nice, until we switched the lights on. Holy crap the horrible pattern of shadows. Those came down and were tossed quickly after that. The kitchen didn’t have a space for a tall fridge freezer and searches revealed that a good under-the-counter fridge freezer basically didn’t exist. So we had to cut some worktop out and move an overhead cupboard. In one of our biggest big-brain moves, the cupboard was moved to an opposite wall, propped on feet and given a work surface to make it a thin low cupboard. The decorating was a lot of work over a long time, and I finally moved in last week. There was a final delay of a couple delays because my broadband wasn’t installed correctly, but everything’s working now.
What next. Let’s go with: Writing the book continues
The same story that I have been working on for four (?) years is still going. I was making good progress up until January when things kind of fell apart. The stress of the house hunting combined with realising that there was a massive plot hole in an entire section of the plot meant I stopped working on it altogether. But I had a brainwave around August time and started re-doing the synopsis of that part. I got the synopsis ready just in time for NaNoWriMo and am bashing out a new draft of it this month. No idea if I’ll get through it in the month or not, but progress is progress.
And lastly, I did a very sneaky thing at my job.
I work in a marketing firm, and am the only person in a 500-person company who does what I do. I’m told that other people are brought in as contractors for other geographic areas that I’m not involved in, but I’m the only on-staff proofreader there is for the firm. Now a while back, maybe a year ago, they started talking about this thing called the Talent Matrix. It was to be a way of formalising and standardising how people get promotions work. As the only one of my kind at the company and basically the beta-tester for the post, I was very interested in seeing how this would work and if I could get a promotion (and a decent pay bump). Well, it finally launched a few months ago, almost unannounced in a meeting I attended by sheer chance. They laid out how a lot of jobs worked and it was all fine and dandy. Except proofreaders weren’t listed in it. I completely lost it. After months of requesting to see it, and I wasn’t even in there. My boss was very sympathetic and managed to get hold of what HR had for proofreaders. They had one job description for the standard proofreader (my title) and it was basically a description of me. I didn’t know what to say. They had no idea what to do with me. Fortunately, my boss had a good idea. She said I should write out descriptions for the Senior and Junior roles. And I agreed. It took some research, some back and forth and a lot of drafts, but I wrote job descriptions for Senior and Junior Proofreaders, and also rewrote the middle Proofreader. And this is the very sneaky thing I did: I purposefully wrote the whole set so that I already fit the description of the Senior Proofreader. These job specs were then sent to several managers for sign off, which they did. Then they were sent to HR for adding to the records, which they were. And then I told my boss that according to the Talent Matrix, I should be promoted. And she agreed.
So now I’m waiting on getting a promotion because no one stopped me from promoting myself. Which is nice.
Lastly, some interesting TV watching. I’ve never watched The Office. Partly because I don’t like the humour of the British version, where they stew in the awkwardness, and partly because of how I felt about my last job, it seemed I’d already lived through what the show had to offer. But for some reason I watched Severance and found it really compelling. That’s the one where people have their memories split, so on the job they don’t know their outside lives, and out of the job they don’t know what they do inside the office. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve got enough distance from my old job now that stories of being trapped in a dull office don’t bother me as much. Part of it is definitely the mystery of the story. I have to wonder what it would be like for me in that job though. Would I avoid depression because the outside me didn’t worry about the meaningless of the job, and the inside me didn’t know what I was missing? Or would I be even worse than I was in real life? I often referred to my last job as a time suck. But to literally look at a clock, blink and see hours disappear would be horrible. Well, I’m glad I’ve got a job I like now.

Had kind of an epiphany today.
My mental health is probably so bad because I don’t eat enough. Well enough at least. When I do it’s mainly snacks and cup of noodles…
So I was resolved and went to the store with no money, bought stuff for an easy instant pot meal so I wouldn’t take up the kitchen (cause there are issues with my roommates) and am excited to put more effort into feeding my partner too.
However….I come out to get dinner done before partner gets home….and my roommate is taking up the entire kitchen. It was her day off. I opened and worked a full shift. She had all day and she waited!???
I never ever use the kitchen. I have like three times in the last month maybe. And now I’m fairly sure my partner is mad because he decided to make a few stops before coming home from work so I held off on cooking. So when he called again I told him to get himself something to eat for dinner, that I didn’t need anything, and that I’ll make the meal tomorrow. He didn’t sound happy.
Honestly I’m not happy either. I’m trying to do this for both of us and while yes roommate owns the house…we pay half the mortgage and I have zero money from just having to pay rent with 90% of my paycheck from last week…I’ll get paid again in two weeks and I only have so much.
Whatever. At least I bought a couple of apples?
I’m upset cause it was a really rough day at work with my manager and I had this resolve about food and cooking dinner more often regardless of roommate but I literally can’t do my one little meal because every surface and utensil is in use.
I was feeling SO GOOD when I got home. And now I feel shattered like I did this morning after the talk with my manager.
It’s like the world is telling me to just quit my job, end my relationship, and move back home because why bother with the suffering that my bf would rather endure for two more years.

Feeling so so bad about the relationship I'm currently trapped in.
I've been making steps toward buying a lot in the next village over and building a tiny home from a shed. I've got basically the entire project priced out and I think I can get a construction mortgage to pay for the whole thing and keep it within my price range.
Unfortunately my boss ended up deciding not to provide me with health insurance because it would cost too much and be too much of a hassle for just me (I'm the only employee), so he gave me a 25 cent raise instead and called it even. That's only $364 before taxes for the entire year. Idk what he thinks that's going to cover. I desperately need a bunch of dental work and had been counting on this to be able to go do it because I cannot afford to go otherwise. I know it'll be at least a thousand. I haven't seen a dentist since I was still on my dad's insurance when I was 19. So it's been nearly a decade. I was complaining about it to partner tho and he told me he would pay for me to go, so that's good at least I guess. I'll take advantage of that while I can. I do feel bad, tho, because I'm planning to leave him, but at the same time I do really need this and I should probably just take it.
I'm really hoping I can manage this tiny house build. It's scary and there is a lot I'll have to do on my own that I've never done before, but I've done hard and scary things before in my life so I think I can do this, too. And I have some friends that I'm sure will give me a hand with the things I won't be able to do totally on my own, like drywalling the ceiling. I'll have to hire a plumber and electrician regardless, but I think that's still very doable. I'll probably also have to pour a crawl space foundation, which could be a lot, but it's probably good that I do it since I may be living there for quite a while. I'm mostly worried about septic. Idk if the village has sewer or if they have any lots I could buy that already have a tank in the ground or something, so that could be another big expense. I still think I can do it for what I can afford, so I'm not too worried and it'll be better than buying something that's already built since I can make this my own entirely and fit my needs perfectly. I'll need to build a fence for the dogs, but not sure if I'll be able to do that right away.

Sell My House Fast Wisconsin
Selling your house can be a stressful process. If you need to quickly sell your house in Wisconsin, it can be even more challenging.
Fortunately, there are some helpful steps you can take to make the process a little easier and get your house sold fast.
In this article, we’ll look at the different options available to those who need to sell their house quickly in Wisconsin.
Read on to learn how to get the best results from selling your home in a timely manner.
Why Are You Thinking Of Selling?
I’m thinking of Sell My House Fast Wisconsin because I need to move quickly for a new job.
It’s an exciting opportunity that I can’t pass up, and so I’ve decided to put my house on the market as soon as possible.
Preparing the house for sale will take some time, but with help from a reputable real estate agent and an experienced attorney, I’m confident that I’ll be able to sell quickly and get the best price possible.
My goal is to have everything taken care of in a matter of weeks, not months.
Thankfully, Wisconsin has laws in place that protect both buyers and sellers during the home-selling process, so I know I’m making the right decision.
Wisconsin’s Current Housing Market
Wisconsin’s housing market is continuing to show signs of strength. Home prices are on the rise, and there’s no doubt that the economy in the state is doing well.
But what can potential buyers expect when they’re looking for a home? In this article, we’ll take a look at Wisconsin’s current housing market and explore what it has to offer.
The housing market in Wisconsin has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Prices have been rising steadily throughout most of the state, and many new homes are being built every year. Additionally, mortgage rates remain low for those who want to purchase a home, making it easier than ever before for people to become homeowners.
With so much activity in Wisconsin’s real estate market, it’s clear that now is an exciting time for potential buyers to enter into the market.
Choosing The Right Sales Method For Your Home
Buying or selling a home can be an intimidating process, but knowing the right sales method for your home can make things easier.
There are two main methods of selling a home: through a real estate agent or FSBO (For Sale By Owner).
When it comes to using a real estate agent, they will manage the entire process for you from start to finish. They will list your property on the market, advertise it, and show it to potential buyers. You’ll pay them a commission when the sale goes through, typically between 5-7%.
On the other hand, if you go with FSBO, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of the sale and won’t have to pay any commissions. It may require more work on your part but you can save money in doing so.
It’s important to take into consideration how much time and effort you’re willing to put into selling your property before deciding which route is best for you. If you want to avoid most of the hassle associated with selling a home, going through a real estate agent is probably your best option. However, if you have some extra time and are comfortable handling the sale yourself, FSBO might be an ideal choice.
Selling Through A Realtor
When it comes to selling your home in Wisconsin, you have a few different options. Choosing the right sales method for your home should depend on the type of property, the local market, and other factors. Selling through a realtor is one of the most popular options.
Realtors provide a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help you sell your home quickly and for the best price possible. They will assess your property, recommend any improvements needed before listing, set an appropriate asking price, create marketing materials and list your home on multiple websites to get maximum exposure.
Realtors also handle negotiations with buyers, coordinate inspections and appraisals, and handle all paperwork associated with the sale. Additionally, they can provide access to resources such as mortgage lenders or contractors who can help make the process smoother.
Selling through a realtor may require some upfront costs for staging or marketing materials, but ultimately it is often worth the cost to ensure that you get top dollar for your home when selling in Wisconsin’s current housing market.
For Sale By Owner
The For Sale By Owner (FSBO) route is an option for Wisconsin residents who want to avoid paying a realtor and take on the responsibility of selling their home themselves. FSBO allows sellers to list their property on the market without any third-party involvement, eliminating costly commissions that would be typically paid to real estate agents.
This can be an attractive option for many sellers, as they don’t have to worry about added fees and expenses eating into their profits from the sale. When selling a home without a realtor, it’s important to be aware of the various tasks involved in putting your house on the market and handling all aspects of the sale process.
This includes taking care of marketing, pricing your home competitively, negotiating with buyers, fielding offers, managing paperwork, and closing the transaction. It also requires staying informed about local housing trends and laws that may affect FSBO sales. Being prepared is key to having a successful FSBO experience in Wisconsin’s current housing market.
Selling To An Investor
The current housing market in Wisconsin is very competitive, with buyers and investors alike eager to take advantage of the low interest rates and favorable conditions.
Selling to an investor can be a great option for homeowners who might not be able to find a buyer or need to sell quickly. Investors are usually looking for properties that they can buy at a reduced rate and then fix up and resell for profit. This means that sellers may have to make certain concessions when dealing with investors, but it also opens up opportunities for serious profits.
Sellers should take into account the fact that investors will likely look for any problems with the home that could affect its value, so making sure all repairs are made before listing the property is essential. It’s also important to be realistic about the price; if an investor offers too low of a price, then it might be better to wait and see if someone else makes an offer.
On the other hand, if the offer is reasonable, then it may be worth taking it rather than waiting around for something better. Ultimately, selling to an investor can give owners peace of mind knowing their property is sold quickly while still earning them a decent return on their investment.
Finding Honest Investors
The current housing market in Wisconsin is an excellent opportunity for investors, particularly those looking for honest and reliable partners. With the right research and knowledge of local market trends, investors can take advantage of the state’s diverse real estate landscape to find ideal investment opportunities.
When it comes to finding honest investors, it pays to do your homework. Look for people who have experience in the industry, good references from past deals, and a solid track record of success.
Ask questions about their process, what kind of properties they specialize in, and how well they know the local market. It’s also important to read reviews online and get advice from other professionals before signing any contracts or making any commitments.
Taking the time to do your due diligence will ensure that you make wise decisions when it comes to investing in Wisconsin’s housing market.
Wisconsin Investors Specialize In Helping Homeowners In Difficult Situations
Wisconsin is currently in a hot housing market, with home values climbing higher and higher. For many people, this is great news, as their homes are now worth more than they ever have been.
But for some homeowners, it can be a difficult situation. If they need to move quickly or are underwater on their mortgage, the traditional real estate market can be hard to navigate.
Fortunately, there are Wisconsin investors who specialize in helping homeowners in these situations. They understand the complexities of the current housing market and can offer solutions that provide homeowners with the best possible outcome.
These investors may purchase a home quickly for cash or provide assistance with refinancing or other resources that will help them stay in their home. With an experienced investor by their side, homeowners can take control of their situation and get back on track financially.
FORECLOSURE
The housing market in Wisconsin has been affected by the current economic climate, leading to an increase in foreclosures. The number of homes entering foreclosure in Wisconsin has grown significantly over the past year, with more than double the amount of homes being foreclosed upon compared to the same period last year. This is largely due to the fact that many homeowners have experienced financial hardship brought on by job losses and other economic pressures. Unfortunately, this trend shows no signs of abating anytime soon. Many homeowners are still struggling to make ends meet and cannot keep up with their mortgage payments, leading to more foreclosures. The problem is compounded by rising interest rates and other factors that make it harder for people to get out from under their existing debt obligations. As a result, more homeowners are finding themselves facing foreclosure proceedings. It’s clear that this crisis calls for immediate action from both local and state governments as well as non-profit organizations and other stakeholders in order to help those affected by foreclosures find solutions that allow them to stay in their homes. By providing support services such as mortgage assistance programs or loan modifications, these individuals can be given a chance to keep their homes while also keeping up with their payments. Such initiatives will hopefully help stabilize the housing market in Wisconsin and prevent further foreclosures from occurring.
BURNED OUT LANDLORD
The housing market in Wisconsin has been busy for landlords, with demand for rental properties being high. As a result, many landlords are feeling the strain of their responsibilities; from the need to maintain and repair their properties to dealing with tenants who may not always be reliable when it comes to rent payments. Unfortunately, this can take its toll on landlords and can lead to them becoming burned out. Burned out landlords may find themselves struggling to address tenant complaints or keeping up with maintenance issues in a timely manner. They may also become less communicative with their tenants, potentially leading to misunderstandings or disputes about rent payments or other matters. It is important for landlords to recognize when they are feeling burned out so that they can take steps to get back on track and ensure that their rental properties remain in good condition and that positive relationships with their tenants are maintained.
PROBATE
Wisconsin’s housing market has seen significant changes in recent years. Probate is an important factor in the state’s current housing market landscape. It is the process through which a deceased person’s estate is distributed according to their will, or if no will exists, then according to the laws of intestacy. This process can be used to transfer ownership of real estate and other property from the deceased person to their beneficiaries. Probate also involves the appointment of a personal representative (or executor) who is responsible for ensuring that all assets are accounted for and distributed correctly. Probate can be a lengthy process, but it is an important part of making sure that a deceased person’s wishes are followed and that their property passes on to those whom they intended. In some cases, avoiding probate may be possible with proper planning and use of certain legal documents, such as trusts or transfer-on-death designations. Ultimately, probate ensures that a deceased person’s assets are not left in limbo and instead pass on to their intended beneficiaries with minimal disruption.
NEED REPAIRS / UPGRADES
The Wisconsin housing market is showing an overall increase in new home starts and existing home sales, however, there are still many homes that need repair. From a financial standpoint, it can be difficult to determine whether investing in repairs makes sense for the current owner or if they should consider selling and moving to a different location. Homeowners considering making repairs should carefully consider the costs associated with the project and how much value the repairs will add to their property. Additionally, they should also take into account any tax credits or other incentives that may be available for certain projects. With careful consideration of all potential factors, homeowners can make an informed decision about whether to invest in necessary repairs or move on to a different property.
You’re One Step Away From Selling That House & Moving On With Life
It’s time to make that big move. You’ve been waiting for the perfect moment, and now it’s here. Selling your house in Wisconsin’s current housing market can be a daunting process, but with the right advice and planning, you’re one step away from making your dream come true.
From understanding the current market trends to selecting the right real estate agent, there are many steps you need to take before selling your house.
Researching local median home prices will help you get an idea of what your house should be priced at, and a professional home inspection is recommended so any potential issues are addressed ahead of time.
Additionally, having an experienced real estate agent on your side ensures that all of the details regarding paperwork and closing costs are taken care of.
You may have already gone through this process once or twice before, but taking these extra steps will ensure that everything goes smoothly this time around. With enough preparation and dedication, you’ll be well on your way to saying goodbye to Wisconsin and starting a new chapter in life!

A loneliness grips Nicole, and she decides she wants to visit one of her sisters. She picks Helga, because she’s moved into a nicer house recently and she wants to see it.
Tumblr media
‘Personally my dream home would be by the sea,’ says Nicole. ‘Somewhere where I could see a dolphin. But I like this place! It’s pretty roomy! Kind of a weird layout but very livable.’
‘Thank you Nicky,’ says Helga. ‘It was quite a chore to try and get it.’
‘Certainly a terrible mortgage,’ said Connor, Helga’s husband. ‘And years of living in a shack to save up for it. But we finally saved up the deposit.’
‘I hope it won’t be too much paying it back,’ says Nicole, who barely understands this stuff.
‘We’re hard workers with good incomes. Hard work is rewarded,’ says Connor.
Nicole gives Connor a look. She’s never liked him too much. Not much imagination.
Helga asks how Nicole’s job is going, and then asks about the chemistry set.
‘Oh, did I tell you about that? Oh I haven’t done much with it yet than experimentally produce knockoff medicine.’
‘Isn’t that illegal?’ says Connor.
‘I don’t distribute it.’ Nicole waves a dismissive hand. ‘I play around with medicines, and in duplicating medicines. I hope maybe I’ll figure out a new way to... I’m not sure. Better production, better knowledge of side effects. That sort of thing.’
‘That’s very interesting,’ says Helga. ‘I perhaps have an idea that might help you.’
‘Oh?’
‘There’s a new medicine on the market, called Phalanx, which we managed to get a prescription for for Conrad, whose ingredients are a complete secret.’
Connor stirs uncomfortably. ‘The New Government has chosen to permit this, and they know what’s best for the nation. You shouldn’t go prying.’
Helga speaks to her husband, but is clearly aiming this information at Nicole: ‘The owner, Virgil Waller, is clearly bribing the government to get around the law. He’s the most powerful man in the Nation, even more than Mondebello. If you can figure out how he makes his medicine, you’ll be doing the New Government a favour by getting them off his leash so they can go back to serving the people instead of this man’s profits.’
Connor concedes the point.
Tumblr media
Connor takes out a whole plate of different things. He kept the bottle of Phalanx, which appears a dark brown syrup sort of stuff, on a plate of ingredients for Conrad’s lunch. Conrad is apparently over at a friend’s.
‘Give her the entire bottle,’ says Helga. ‘We’ll fake having smashed one to get a replacement, or something.’
Nicole takes a look at the bottle. It looks more like a bottle of syrup than a medicine. “Phalanx” is written in large dramatic gold letters, with the company  name Vitasyn Pharmaceuticals in silver above it. The instructions have a simple one tablespoon daily dose.
‘It says it’s a remedy for most ailments,’ she says. ‘This seems unlikely.’
‘We got it for a bad chest infection Conrad had,’ says Helga. ‘And according to him it’s helped with stomach aches and he doesn’t feel as tired anymore. So I’m inclined to believe it. Besides, it is approved by the national medical association.’
And yes, their seal of approval is on the bottle. ‘If Mister Waller and “Vitasyn” is just mixing three different medicines that’ll be a nightmare of side affects and the medical association will have the entire company killed. Is nobody studying this?’
‘It’s a nightmare to get a proper sample of it. They have government and therefore secret police backing if any official lab tries to do anything. So we need our friendly neighbourhood bootlegger to study it for us.’
Tumblr media
It has certainly been an interesting visit. Nicole is eager to get home and start working on it.
‘If you find anything untoward about it, tell me right away and I’ll kill Waller myself for poisoning my boy,’ says Helga.
‘I hope you don’t mind me leaving so suddenly,’ says Nicole.
‘Haha no, I had more plans today anyway. No offence, but I didn’t get all dressed up for you.’ Helga laughs and gives her a last goodbye hug.
Nicole won’t immediately get working on the medicine. She has a few things she wants to do. Talk to a few medical colleagues about it work, without the wiretapping of the phones, for starters. There’s also somebody she hasn’t spoken to in a while she’s eager to see again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The being in the lamp presents an interesting choice. Money and Love were fairly straight forward concepts. This time he’s talking about fire and water. Far more metaphorical. He senses “a desire to improve physical existence.” “It” will be either from the “realm of fire” or the “realm of water.”
So Nicole’s about to get a gift, related to one of these “realms.” Very well. This is actually a very easy choice. Nicole has an unfortunate experience with fire that puts her off of it, and therefore chooses Water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spilling from the being and soaking her feet, a torrent of water rapidly sloshes through Nicole’s home. It’s not as bad as it looks; surface level wetness rather than an actual flooding, but it’ll take a while to clean it up. Nicole stamps her feet in fury, but is deep down relieved she didn’t pick Fire.
Apparently this man in the lamp isn’t is one of those folkloric beings.

You know, the entire US economic system is so messed up and so is a lot of your views of it (and I mean on both sides, I also include myself in this since I often don't realize until I *really* think about it) but like. Let's start by talking about taxes. There was a post going around lately that was like
Tumblr media
Anyways this is not true. You can deduct INTEREST on mortgage from your taxes. Not mortgage itself. And for renters, in 23 states you can do the same. It's meant to be an offset for property taxes, which, in case you didn't know, are INSANE. Like my family pays more taxes on our house and property then on THE ENTIRE REST OF OUT TAXES, and we're in the top tax bracket. They don't tax you nearly enough on your ACTUAL INCOME but tax you way to much on your property and stock. It's basically based on, if you sold everything right now, what would we then be able to tax you. It's not measuring how much you make on a year to year basis, it's measuring how much you managed to save up over a long period in order to buy your big household a home that has enough space for everyone. It's definitely possible with housing/property taxes for them to cost so much that you can no longer afford your house and land, that you reasonably worked and saved up for. That's kind of unfair. Especially if you bought it when housing was cheap, and since the value on such things has gone up, so have your taxes. You weren't spending an insane amount of money on it. But now it's worth about 1.1 million and you've gotta move out or pay taxes on that. That's a thing that happens.
And meanwhile, a mega rich person who loves the city and therefore doesn't bother with a lot of land is taxed less than the moderately well off person in the previous example.
So the tax system is messed up, people need to pay more based on their actual income and less based on their homes.
Oh another thing with taxes is you know how charitable donations are tax deductible? Yeah only to a certain amount, meaning that there is no incentive for rich people to donate the proper amount given their income. Yes, I think they should give regardless of whether they're going to be rewarded for it, but people who hoard THAT MUCH money are selfish, and they're not going to. My family is not even that rich (dad worth something in the 10s of millions) but the amount we give (no big deal for us) is ALREADY well above the amount you can deduct from taxes. And we don't mind, but the super rich? Do you think they're going to go out of their way to support causes with anything more than petty cash and not be rewarded for it? They're not.
Ultimately, they shouldn't have such extravagant amounts of money in the first place, since they didn't work for it. My dad, which I mentioned previously, works 10+ hours a day, often including weekends. That's real work. His field is high paid and he in particular is high paid since he's the only one who can do what he does, and he gets extra for INVENTING most of the things his companies are based on, which he, you know SPENDS TIME STUDYING AND WORKING ON AND CREATING. He's not making tons of money just by owning something. That's wrong. All that excess cash should be going to the people who actually do the work.
And I think for the most part everyone acknowledges this, but y'all talking about killing the 1% doesn't realize how broad the 1% is. That includes doctors, lawyers, high level computer scientists, that WORK for their living, and are not exploiting you. Who you're looking to target is the owners, the people who hoard billions or trillions of dollars in wealth. Do you even know how much a trillion is? Let's say you take a rich person worth about 10 million. Ok how much more does someone worth a trillion make? They make 100,000 times more. What can you afford these days with 10 million? A nice house, decent cars for the household members that drive, some land, the ability to not worry about medical bills and to pay for college, plus a bit extra to save or give to charity. How nice. A lot of people don't have that privilege. What about 1 trillion? There is not a house in existence that will make a dent in your finances. You could send your children to any college they want for their whole lives and not make a dent in your finances. You could buy companies on a whim with almost no consequence. It's not right. It's especially not right when other people have trouble paying for both rent and groceries.
If we redistributed the 8 richest people's wealth (the 8 of them have more money than the poorest HALF of the planet combined), you all could afford a home, food, a good education, and have a reasonable amount left over.
And this is why, even growing up rich, I'm such a communist. It is not a fever dream for us ALL to be able to live, comfortable, reasonable lives. The current wealth in the world redistributed, and suddenly everyone could live like I do. It isn't lessening the average person's quality of living. For the vast majority of us, communism done right is nothing but an upgrade. Yeah so a fistful of billionaires and trillionaires will be really upset. They'd still have enough to live comfortably and yet they're the ones who own so much they can effectively block any progress in this direction. It's pure selfishness.

A Box Boy Serial Killer On the Loose? Part 1 of 3
r/LetsTalkTrueCrime
•Posted by u/oshaycanyousee 1 month ago
Hello, r/LetsTalkTrueCrime!
I’ve posted this write-up in a couple other reddits, but someone pointed me to this one as being a good place for discussion, and this is a really weird set of three unsolved murders (well, one death and two murders? Maybe?) and I wanted to see if any of you have some thoughts or maybe more info on these cases.
Three men died within two years in three different cities.
While each death is unique, all of them have one thing in common - fingerprints and DNA from a single human pet was found in every single location.
Let’s start with the first death.
Nathaniel Matthew Benson, who went by “Nanda” (a childhood nickname given to him by a younger brother who couldn’t pronounce his full name as a toddler, apparently), was forty-one years old at the time of his death.
He was born and raised in North Dakota by very strict religious parents, and had three younger brothers and one younger sister. There is some disagreement here about whether his home life was peaceful or not. His younger sister claims that the environment at home was strict but fair, and the family was mostly happy. Two of his three younger brothers tell a different story, about a father who put too much on their shoulders, especially “Nanda” as the eldest, and the pressure they felt to be perfect.
His other brother, the youngest of the family, has never given a public interview beyond a short statement that he and Nanda were not close, and he did not feel able to speak about his character. There were nearly fifteen years between the oldest and youngest childrens’ births, and Nathaniel had moved out of the house by the time the youngest was four years old, so this makes sense.
By all accounts, Nathaniel was an excellent student, getting all A’s throughout his years of education. He was considered quiet and shy, and most of his high school classmates don’t have many standout memories of him. He graduated valedictorian of his high school class, then surprised everyone by stating he wouldn’t be attending college, and instead would be taking a “gap year” to travel the United States using money from his graduation party and also some he’d saved up from working part-time retail and restaurant jobs.
Between ages 18 and 19, he took his small secondhand four-door vehicle around the nation, calling home every week or so to give his family updates, sending postcards, etc. After about six months, though, the phone calls and postcards became fewer and fewer, and eventually he told everyone he had gotten a new job and decided to forgo college entirely.
His family was shocked - and by all accounts his father was furious - but Nathaniel refused to budge.
There was apparently a very hostile phone conversation about one year after this decision which was the last time Nathaniel Benson spoke to his father directly until his death.
After this, his family received only sporadic communications sent from a P.O. Box located in central California, in a mid-sized city known as Dosaba. He never did give anyone an actual home address.
He occasionally called them, mostly his sister and one of his brothers, but surviving family states that the phone number he called from was different every single time, and usually didn’t have a California area code.
“He used burner phones for everything,” Nathaniel’s sister Samantha told WNDR, a local news station, shortly after his mysterious death. “And he would never tell us what job he did. We asked and asked and Nanda would just say ‘oh, this and that’, or ‘I do contractor work’. Just answers that don’t tell you anything. It was all very mysterious, very secretive. You know, we talked about how maybe he’d gotten into drugs or something, but my brother wasn’t a drug user, ever. It just seems so out of character for the brother I knew.”
“He was always reading his Bible when we knew him,” Younger brother Timothy stated. “But you know, I asked him once if he had found a home church wherever he was living, and he laughed and laughed. Then he just said, ‘they’d have a lot of opinions on how I live my life if I did that’, and changed the subject. So I knew whatever he was doing, it probably wasn’t good.”
There has been a lot of speculation by investigators that “Nanda” had indeed picked up employment within some kind of drug smuggling group at this time. Evidence found after his death has even opened the possibility that he worked as a high-end hitman.
There’s a lot of international travel during this time period, far more than can be accounted for unless travel was part of his workplace responsibilities. Employment records show him working as a sales manager for a company called Sunrise Investments, but this is believed by many to be a shell corporation hiding something much, much darker.
However, all of this remains speculative, and there’s never been any proof that Nathaniel Benson did anything but the financial sales the company claims. No one ever did much work with him, and other employees at the company stated contact with him occurred entirely by phone and fax (and then e-mail) at this time.
When investigators pored over the documents after getting a warrant, they weren’t able to find anything suspicious - and that in and of itself seems suspicious to some.
For years, Benson seemed to simply drop off the map entirely when it comes to local information - investigators did find that he owned a vintage Corvette that he fixed up himself (found via vehicle registry and taxes listings, which is public knowledge), and that about two years before his death he bought a large five-bedroom house with a basement in Dosaba, which he renovated in total secrecy. I was able to find records of him paying home taxes through his mortgage company, and that he spoke to local contractors and building companies, paying for consultations about the renovations he undertook.
None of the companies he spoke to kept any kind of detailed notes about these consultations, but you’ll see why it’s relevant when I discuss what was found after his death.
Nathaniel Benson’s life came to an abrupt end on August 16th, 20XX, but nobody would find his body for more than two days.
On August 18th, his cleaning lady arrived for her usual weekly visit to discover him crumpled at the foot of the stairs, face-up. She called 911 immediately and first responders arrived within twenty minutes to her white-faced and nearly silent.
First responders noted that Nathaniel’s eyes were closed, unusual for a violent death. A wet cloth had been laid over them to help them stay that way. The medical examiner stated later that this would have to have been done within the first hour after he died, before rigor mortis could stiffen muscles and lead to them opening again.
That whoever witnessed his death knew to do this is deeply unusual, and may be a sign of affection or grief.
The autopsy found that Nathaniel had met his end approximately 36 hours before he was found, and had died due to an undiagnosed heart defect that had resulted in cardiac arrest.
Sounds like any sudden death that can simply be written off as sad but natural, right? Well, there’s a few details that make things a little murkier than that, and have led to his death being listed as “undetermined” officially, and possibly including foul play.
For one thing, Nathaniel hadn’t simply collapsed next to the stairs - he had fallen, or been pushed, and showed evidence of bone fractures and head trauma consistent with the fall. A bit of blood was found on one step that came from his injuries. This head trauma would likely not have been fatal if he had received medical attention, but cardiac arrest ensured death even if head trauma didn’t.
Did Nathaniel Benson suffer a heart attack and fall down the stairs, dying only when he reached the bottom? Maybe.
Or maybe he really was pushed, the shock of it is the reason he went into cardiac arrest.
There’s one more unusual fact that makes foul play a possibility in this mysterious death.
Nathaniel Benson owned a legally purchased Box Boy, no known legal name, who went by his original purchase number: 334235. The Box Boy was a Romantic designation, and was purchased from Facility 001 in Berras, a city in Southern California, where the WRU headquarters is located.
WRU, when contacted by investigators, easily agreed to meet and provide detectives with information regarding the Box Boy’s purchase, as well as the DNA and fingerprint samples the company keeps on file.
According to WRU’s internal records, this Boxie was not only a designated Romantic, but a specialty Romantic, trained for ‘masochism’. This tracks with multiple books on, shall we say, somewhat salacious interests that Benson had for his love life.
As Benson never seemed to date anyone or maintain a relationship, it’s theorized that the Boxie was his way of dealing with the stress of his work. WRU noted that Benson had contacted them after the purchase was complete to give his compliments on the Boxie’s training and note that he was ‘perfect’ and they ‘got along just fine’.
The Box Boy’s fingerprints were found all over the house, which is totally normal. He was living there full-time, after all. But investigators also located something a bit more unusual: a secret room within the home that the cleaning lady had never seen before, hidden behind a carefully camouflaged door.
This is what Benson had been working on when he ‘renovated’ his newly purchased home: He built a secret dungeon room with stone walls and a concrete floor, outfitted with a dip and a “drain”, plus a garden hose hooked up on one wall.
The room also had rows upon rows of cabinets full of various tools consistent with a ‘hard BDSM lifestyle’, according to one detective. I wasn’t able to get ahold of the actual list of items found, but was able to determine that whips, knives, ‘unspecified implements purchased from adult stores’, and other things were found.
Tests done on the walls and floor showed that blood had been spilled nearly everywhere in the room at one time or another, and large amounts of it. There was also evidence of blood found in Nathaniel Benson’s bedroom, primarily on the floor and in the bed. A small faded stain was found on the headboard just below a set of cuffs hooked into it.
A few small dried bloodstains were also found around the master bathroom sink, and investigators were able to determine the blood matched the DNA of the Box Boy, and was left there much more recently than the rest of the blood in the house, possibly even on the day of Benson’s death.
Here’s the thing, though: the Box Boy himself was nowhere to be found.
Was this Box Boy tired of being used as a human pincushion? Did he take matters into his own hands and commit the ultimate crime a pet can do, killing his owner? If he did, he no doubt knew what happens to pets who kill their owners, usually either being ‘put down’ or wiped clean to be resold.
Is our Boxie a killer right from the start? Or was he only a witness to a natural death who panicked and ran away?
Without locating the Boxie himself, it’s impossible to know.
The cleaning lady remembered him, and gave a description: Somewhere between 5’8” and 5’11”, wiry but with some muscle, usually dressed in just a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt when she was in the house. He has short dark hair, brown eyes, and an angular face. She mentioned visible scars on his arms, but none on his face. She was told to call him only “pet” if she needed to speak to him. She stated his voice was slightly hoarse and rough, as if he had a sore throat all the time.
They had only one significant interaction, where the cleaning lady inquired about a large bruise on the Boxie’s face and bandages on his arms. He apparently told her, at the time, that he ‘liked the reminer’, but thanked her for asking after his health. They never spoke directly again.
The detail about his face being unscarred will become incredibly relevant in parts 2 and 3.
Neighbors, when asked, mentioned that they had seen someone matching that description walking away from the house somewhere around 4 and 5 pm on August 16th. The medical examiner believes Benson died around noon, so this leaves about four or five hours between the death and the Boxie leaving.
He appeared to be walking very quickly and one neighbor noticed he was holding what looked like crumpled cash in one hand and a plastic shopping bag in another.
He was spotted waiting at a nearby bus stop, and footage from a camera mounted inside the bus shows someone matching the Box Boy’s description riding the bus all the way into Dosaba’s historic, artsy downtown. There, he was again captured on CCTV purchasing a one-way train ticket with cash. The train station employee who sold him the ticket remembers offering him a round-trip ticket for a discount, which she always did anyone who asked for a ticket to another city, only to have him “nervously” say he wouldn’t need to come back. She mentioned that he scratched at the side of his neck, and that when he walked away, he looked like his shoes were a little too big for his feet.
It is believed, as Nathaniel Benson was found barefoot but wearing clothing that suggested he had been outside doing yard work just before his death, that the Box Boy stole his shoes.
The fleeing Box Boy is captured one more time on camera as he arrived at his destination, Red Hills, approximately a two-hour train ride to the south. He walks past the CCTV quickly, hunched over as if trying to hide his face.
After that, he disappears.
Red Hills is a significantly larger city than Dosaba, with nearly a million residents within city limits and another 600,000 filling its suburbs and outer neighborhoods. Red Hills is a city that has seen better days, and it would be easy for a runaway Box Boy to simply fade away into its seedier districts. While Red Hills has had more than a dozen runaway Boxies picked up over the years, mostly Romantics who engaged in prostitution to make ends meet, it’s not believed that Benson’s Box Boy knew this when he chose the location.
As Romantic Boxies usually can’t read, it’s believed he simply chose a location he’d overheard someone else say, knowing nothing about what he would find when he got there.
Two days after his death, Nathaniel Benson’s debit and credit cards, Driver’s License, and a folded-up note he had written to himself about buying toothpaste were found in a plastic shopping bag tied-off at the top, were found inside the bus the Boxie had ridden, stuffed between the edge of a seat and the wall. The Boxie’s fingerprints were on everything.
But the Boxie himself wouldn’t be seen again until more than a year later.
Nathaniel “Nanda” Benson’s death for a time remained a one-off unsolved mystery. A little on the unusual side, but entirely possible that no foul play occurred, just some details that need filling in.
The shocking murder of a Red Hills man known locally as “Brute” would bring this Box Boy back into law enforcement’s line of sight, and open up questions about whether the Box Boy had simply been running away from Nathaniel Benson’s death… or leaving to find a new victim.
I’ll post Part 2, about “Brute”, shortly! Then Part 3 will be about a third murder, in which our potential Box Boy serial killer takes out… another serial killer.
I told you this one gets interesting.
