I've been unable to stop thinking about Arknights confirming that the sky is fake for several days now, and I think I just finally realized why it's enthralled me so much. Because the idea that there is an unknowable force that has covered the sky in a facade, leaving any pinpricks of light that poke through feeling like a stab in the gut...

That's... just light pollution.

This hits me so hard because... that's just what happened. Capitalism's demand for the city to always be alive, to always be working, the lights always on has taken the very fucking sky from us. In Terra, the thing that covered the sky is an unknowable powerful force. But in our world, the cosmic horror that has covered out sky is just capitalism, plain and simple. There is no squid monster or anything, it's just... the world we've built.

And this isn't unique, obviously. Arknights is a game about climate despair. Everything the game talks about is steeped in it. The sea itself is becoming toxic as it rises, destroying seaside towns. If the ice to the north and south of our world fails, we all die. Our fuel is poisoning the people and making natural disasters worsen faster than we can ever recover from them. We've built a system that has wormed its way into our heads, a system that has protected an in-group and rendered them unable to empathize with those outside of it. We've created rules and guidelines around it, but in reality, the only rule it ever followed was that "it must survive." And those in charge are ambivalent to the suffering of the underclass, happy to use the police as a shield as they throw their lavish parties as the systems built to protect us are used to murder us instead.

It's not subtle, and it never has been.

But I once went on a camping trip to a Dark Sky park. I didn't know it was one, and at 4 AM, I was shocked awake by a bright light I thought was the sunrise, only to get up and see the milky way for the first time. And not a day goes by that I don't think about the fact that something that beautiful is right above us.

And so... maybe it's just that I'm happy that in between everything else, they took the time to talk about the sky.

the thing that really gets me though is the tragedy surrounding dimentio's betrayal and the aftermath he probably had some reason he wanted to join count bleck aside from whatever personal agenda he may have had. after all, he came to him looking to join his cause. i can't imagine how he must have felt getting rejected. why not him? why must he be so outcast as to not even be accepted by the misfits and rejects? and why would count bleck not need a master of dimensions if he intended to create a perfect new world after destroying all worlds? world and dimension tend to be interchangeable within the game so it would be very suspicious.

so of course when count bleck comes back asking for his help, he's suspicious. he still accepts, of course, he still wants a perfect world, he still wants to believe that's the goal. but he can't get over that. can't get over how, despite the count assuring him his participation is vital, he was outright rejected during his first attempt to join the cause. he has to figure out why this is the case. has to find out what's going on, or at least be able to assure himself that it's nothing.

and he does find out. count bleck never intended to make a perfect world. he never intended to make anything at all. only to destroy it. and what can he do at that point? he can't just leave. leaving now does nothing to stop count bleck. but if he just stops count bleck, well, then he's just back at square one, isn't he?

so he hatches a plan. a beautiful, amazing, dare i say perfect plan. he can stop the count and still get his perfect world, the perfect world that the count had promised all of them.

it fails.

of course it fails. of course it fails and of course it's to something he couldn't possibly have foreseen. and it probably guts him to realize that the reason the pure hearts came back, the reason he lost everything, was because they were all so sickeningly loyal to the count. to the very same man that betrayed them.

that they would scorn and even despise him all while clinging to the side of the true traitor.

and it's not even that the count didn't care for them. but it wasn't a little white lie and it wasn't an accident. he had enlisted their help long before he grew to care for them and by then it was far too late to give away his true intentions. by then he wouldn't be able to handle them leaving once they knew. and in a sense his sacrifice was just as much his attempt of making it up to them as it was a true change of heart.

but even now that everything's over they wouldn't hear dimentio out and i know this. the only one who might would be nastasia, who already knew count bleck's real plan. mimi hates liars and o'chunks probably isn't too fond of traitors, considering the reason he agreed to join the count in the first place. neither of them would see a reason to listen to dimentio. dimentio himself is too proud and too stubborn to ever admit he may not have been entirely justified or to ever come to them with a sincere apology, and they're too devoted to count bleck and too distrustful of dimentio to listen to anything he has to say on the matter.

so they'll forever stay devoted to the man who had lied to them from the very beginning.

IT'S GODDAMN AMAZING AND I ALREADY HAVE MULTIPLE PLAYTHROUGHS PLANNED BECAUSE ONCE IS NOOOOT ENOUGH! I AM IN LOVE. Like I know these types of games (I've been a Bioware slut since KOTOR 2, so I looove this genre), and so I feel very confident saying holy shit, BG3 is one of the best! ALSO IT'S HUGE??? INSANELY HUGE??? AND FULL??? I LOVE IT SM.

Oh god favorites are hard, I'm gd attached to all of these little ducklings following my Tav. So far at least, storywise it's SCRATCH HE IS THE BESTEST BOY maaaybe Astarion. I LOVE his arc, his voicework is stunning, (I accidentally killed him with the big monastery laser and his reaction was hysterical) and his quest has been very moving. A close second is KARLACH, MY GIRL, MY FIREY BFF, like damn I HAD my little battle group (Gale + Astarion + Wyll) when I found her but I adore her so much I'm rotating Gale and Wyll to keep her permanently, SHE JUST WANTED A HUG. 😭

I'm in act 3, I just hit the city! I have no idea how but I am also STILL on my first PT after over a month of play. I love to sniff around under every nook and cranny granted, AND YET I STILL MISSED THINGS, IT'S SO BIG???

So far my route has been a chaotic good route! Outside, uh, occasional murdery hiccups goodbye creche but ya'll were assholes I've mostly managed to follow that alignment, and somehow still made friends with Lae? That was unexpected. I thought she hated my Tav's guts before she hit on her. 😂

Hilarious moments: setting off the giant laser at the monastery cause why wouldn't I grab the shiny weapon (sorry Astarion); being instakilled by Vlaakith at said monastery after basically mocking her with 'if you were really a god you'd be able to just kill someone yourself ha ha-splat'; friends telling me to talk to animals so I got excited when I saw a squirrel and ran to talk to it - it proceeded to bite me, then I failed a persuasion roll about being friends and it told me to fuck off; trying to get to that dwarf lady's husband in the Underdark and shooting an arrow at one of the mushrooms in the field he was in, thinking I could clear them one by one to get to him, only to set off a chain reaction that incinerated him and left the entire field a smoking crater (me as the explosions begin: oh, OH, oh no - wait, sir! Sir! Oh you're fine, you're - oh fuck, RUN SIR RU-shit he's dead); placing my druid in rothe/battle cow shape at the top of a ladder and charging whatever bad guy comes up so they fall back down (catchphrase: MOO, BITCH); and finally, I was having trouble with that one boss guy in the goblin camp, the one that sits on the throne. So when I saw I could get to the rafters, I painstakingly dragged every last explosive barrel and grenade I could find into the room and innocently placed them around the throne, then went up to the rafters and had Astarion shoot a fire arrow. I figured I'd at least bring the guy's health down but instead I set off the fourth of july, blasted that guy so hard he bounced around the room like a pinball before his body wound up glitch-stuck halfway through a wall, but hey, dead as a doornail sooo... it worked? Chaotic good alignment: MASTERED. 🤪

I'm playing a half-elf druid CAUSE I CAN BE AN OWLBEAR OR DINOSAUR TO FIGHT. I now have a chance to run around as a dinosaur druid with my 200 yo elf boyfriend, my BFFs, and find random bowls of poutine, this is the BEST GAME EVER. Also hilariously, I didn't check the stats closely and her intelligence wound up quite low, so she is very wise but also dumb as a bag of hammers, I love her, my first Tav is a good-hearted, unintentional bundle of chaos.

by far the best thing about magolor’s boss fight in KRtD is not only does he have discrete spell-casting gestures for each attack, but they change when he’s in soul form and the crown is in control!

during the final phase, his gestures are much more open and broad because the crown has the power to just Make Things Happen. it doesn’t need to make fancy handsigns; it could do all of this with just a thought. instead of a proper form, he just tears open the air to make portals. instead of his kamehameha pose for the giant lasers, the crown just pushes his hands forward in the air. SO much attention to detail went into every damn thing in KRtD and the final fight is no different. it’s the coolest thing, I genuinely want to make a diagram of all of his individual spell motions some day.

(for an added bit of fun, one of magolor’s custom animations on star allies’ title screen implies that he has a sleep spell. that’s hilarious.)

... I just interacted with a sheep outside the ranch (for the "Shear the sheep" daily task board quest) and it triggered Farah's information dialogue about chamomile and straight up teleported me to Valedale?

Time to really kick off the postgame! Now that I've finished with the southern shrine stakes I should hopefully be able to go after the tablet pokemon... After that I'm gonna go rematch katy and brassius before I head for the next shrine!
