What are some amazing, most read Ukraine authors? The only one I know is Gogol and I would like more on my radar.

First important disclaimer is that without knowing ukrainian, your pool of choice is very limited. Unfortunately, our translators haven't done nearly enough to make ukrainian literature acessable for english speakers, so a lot of genuinely amazing stuff would require you to know the language.

The second important disclaimer is that I am going to recommend you a lot of poetry, and, with no disrespect to the translators, it doesn't hit nearly as hard in english as it is in ukrainian. I've recently heard the phrase "to read poetry in translation is like to take a shower wearing a raincoat", and it is so true. So, apologies for this barrier, but there is nothing one can do.

With that in mind, let's start from classics:

The first most important author is Taras Shevchenko. He mainly wrote poetry, but has some prose works as well, and during his life he was more known as a popular artist. The Bible of his works is Kobzar (a ukrainian word for travelling blind musicians), and the same word is also often used as a nickname for Shevchenko - akin to how Shakespeare can be called the Bard. Among the most important poems pay attention to A Dream (the poem for which he was imprisoned by the russians with an explicit ban on writing and painting), The Caucasus, My Testament, Kateryna, A cherry orchad by the house, О thoughts of mine

The second big name to know is Lesya Ukrainka. Lesya is also more known for her drama and poetry than her prose, but she also was a prolific translator and a feminist. Her most well-know play is The Forest Song (a cartoon adaptation is soon to be released after 7 years of production, but from the trailer it looks like it's not going to be close to the text). I find her Бояриня play to be much more interesting and relevant, however, it looks like it has not been translated yet. Among her poems, some of the most important are Contra Spem Spero and Cassandra (the latter has had some successful stage prouctions in Great Britain last year, mayhaps it will gain popularity)

Fun fact: there are speculations about Lesya Ukrainka's relationship with her close friend Olga Kobylyanska. The letters they exchanged are quite intimate and sometimes even erotic in nature, which lead some academics to believe that they were more than friends (most still fall in the "gal pals" camp tho). However, if that were true, that would mean that Lesya Ukrainka is the only bisexual woman to ever be printed on banknotes.

The third pillar of ukrainian classical literature is Ivan Franko. Once again, we are talking about partiotic poetry, but there are also many socialistic ideas in his works (although he became dissilusioned with it in his later years ), which I think many western readers will find appealing - (side comment - it looks like "collective west" is going through the same processses that we overcame a century ago, so ehm... good luck, y'all will need it). I haven't been able to find much of his works translated in English, so here is a good master page. Zakhar Berkut is considered to be one of his greatest works (a ukrainian-american co-production movie The Rising Hawk was released a couple of years ago, it was shit). If you manage to put your hands on it, I would greatly recommend The Painted Fox and Moses. Also, reading Eternal Revolutionary imprinted on me so much in childhood and determined who I grew up to be, I pretty much consider Franko to be my spiritual father.

A great event that happened this year is that Valeryan Pidmohylny's The City is finally getting an english translation. I have been gushing about this book on this blog before (you can also find the link to the publisher there), because for the archetypical ukrainian literature this book is a breath of fresh air. It's beautiful, it's modern, it's urbanistic, the protagonist is irredeemable asshole, it's amazing and I should re-read it as well.

Among the authors that are much more difficult to find, I greatly recommend Ivan Nechu-Levytsky. In my humble opinion, he like no other has managed to capture the "ukrainian spirit" and his plots are extremely captivating and dramatic as hell.

I will always, always add Ivan Bahryiany to my lists of ukrainian "must reads". He is an author of the first ever ukrainian adventure novel Tiger Trappers/The Hunters and the Hunted, which is the book that is loved even by those who don't like ukrainian literature. However, I personally find his Garden of Gethsemane to be a much more important (but take care, it is much more depressing as well). This author is extremely important, but I struggle finding PDFs of his work - perhaps, you'd have to search the libraries or ukr diaspora publishers for paperbacks. I have also been unsuccessfully hunting for an english translation of Why I am not going back to the Soviet Union? pamphlet for years - and I know for sure it exists because the USA first lady at that time has read it and it influenced her opinion on the USSR - but I've had no luck so far.

Another very important author of the same time period is Mykola Khyvylovy. One of his plays has actually been recently put to stage in English (shamefully, I haven't watched it yet, but I can vouch for the text it was based on - it's brutal).

I can't speak about ukrainian literature without mentioning crimean tatars, and although their works are much, much less known (in Ukraine as well, unfortunately), please do not overlook it. It is a gorgeous culture, and reading it, I grew to love and value Crimea so much even without ever visiting it. There are some english translations avaliable, including those of Noman Çelebicihan - an extermely important figure in Crimean Tatar history, the founder of the unfortunately short-lived Crimean Democratic Republic, the author of their national anthem, and overall very influential revolutionary.

Now let's jump to the popular modern authors. Many don't have english translation, but the problem is much less prominent in comparison to the ukrainian classics. With these authors, you shouldn't have trouble with finding paperbacks. Among the most influential authors I can recommend Serhiy Zhadan (Timothy Snyder has once said that he expects Zhadan to receive a Nobel Prize in literature and I agree), Oksana Zabuzhko (she either aught to release soon or has already released an english-exclusive book about the russian-ukrainian war), Yuri Izdryk (extremely modern and unconventional, but he's a good represention of the current state of art), Yuriy Andrukhovych (love his mastery of language, hate his characters). These authors are more light-hearted, but a grim necessity for today is Stanislav Aseyev's The Torture Camp on Paradise Street. It is a autobilgraphical book describing his experience being imprisoned by russians between 2017 and 2019. Western journalism often describes the war crimes russians commit on our land, but just listing the number of people lost doesn't show the face of the russian horror. Read this book to understand why we were screaming about the russian threat before the full-scale invasion, and why every time we regain the territory we brace with terror of what we'll discover there - because everywhere russian army goes, they build hunderds of such Isolyatsya camps that the book describes.

4. Which has the most “you” in it, however you’d define that?

oh, i think that would have to be until the starlight fades into night. i don't really know where that story came from except one day i was in a weird, blind panic and i scribbled as much as i could of this story in my notes app: something that's usually only reserved for personal writing. so i guess the fact that i wrote this on my notes app, something that's usually meant either for fic outlines or personal poetry / journaling / prose pieces means that i might have poured a bit more of myself into it.

12. What WIPs do you have going now? Are you excited about them?

so many. so many. excluding star wars related wips, i think my main wips (that haven't been posted yet) for beyond evil is the joseon dynasty jwds au (which i am . . . so excited to post, bc it's already very near and dear to my heart. i also think it's . . . very different from anything i'd written before, in part because i think the pining/slow burn levels are genuinely off the charts this time (and i say this after / while writing the fake married jwds au, where joo won and dong sik only finally kiss after 97k words).

besides that au, i've got some other shorter wips: i have one that has something to do with joo won and dong sik and ice skating (brought to you by a real life event that happened to me yesterday lmao), another wip that has something to do with joo won, cats, and growing trust/affection . . . another wip that's about ghost yu yeon, another wip that's like . . . i think it might be a two or three-parter, but it's hades/persephone jwds au (there is one scene that started that au and i am so excited) . . . there's yet another fic that i haven't started but i want to start, but so far it's just titled "alexa play this is me trying by taylor swift" . . . i have one fic about jeong je and dong sik and whatever the hell was their youth (i'm as much on team "park jeong je unrequited feelings for dong sik </3" but also "park jeong je and lee dong sik may or may not have actually had some kind of "more than friends" relationship, but mostly because a) they know each other best + so think okay, it's harmless to try this with each other, right? and b) two queer boys growing up in a small town? yeah.). oh, and of course . . . a midnight mass/beyond evil au that's so far called "and to dust you shall return", and there's one scene that lives rent-free in my mind and i don't really know if i'll survive it.

i realize this answer is now three paragraphs long, so i'll stop here--but as you can tell, i am very excited about them.

i make up scenes wherever i go! although i'm more than willing to admit that some of my fics were written/scribbled down in my notebook during my 10 am class last semester . . . i'm pretty sure that was where i wrote the entirety of with paper rings lmao--

the characters that are currently popping up in my head the most are, of course, probably han joo won and lee dong sik. although oddly more of han joo won these days. i'm not sure why--i think he needs attention right now. obi-wan kenobi comes to mind every once in a while too (we're currently on a break, but y'know, we get coffee from time to time).

but anyways--i do write them down! or try to, as soon as i'm able.

talk about writing . . . just writing itself? i feel like after watching things and noticing the interweaving themes/character archetypes, i'm becoming pretty influenced by mike flanagan. or at least, i want to write something that draws on what i've learned/observed of a lot of mike flanagan's works: something that's frightening, but something that's also very quiet and very lovely. something about loss, for sure, and something about a love story disguised in horror. i've honestly fallen in love with that genre--something twisted and terrifying turning out to actually be a love story (beyond evil, the haunting of bly manor, the haunting of hill house, midnight mass) . . . and so, i think it would be cool to write something like that of my own one day. (which is what i'm kind of doing? i have a few original works that very much sit in the horror genre, but also, it's about people falling in love despite the potential of loss and so on and so forth.)

September 15th | Saturday

SMX Convention Center

I was scheduled to go home to Pangasinan this weekend, but due to the bad weather, I decided to stay here in Manila instead. I still wanted to make the most out of this weekend so despite the bad weather, I still pushed through going to The 39th Manila International Book Fair at the SMX Convention Center. I went to the Book Fair with him. We decided to meet at Guadalupe at around 10:30am and grabbed some breakfast at Jollibee (because this guy can't live without rice on breakfast) and went straight to MOA afterwards.

I love books so attending book events such as book fairs is one of the things that I love doing the most and having to go to such event with someone who also shares the same passion for books is one of the best things to happen in a bookworm’s life. To be honest, I didn’t see him as the book-type of a person (haha judger!) so being with him at the book fair and seeing his interest on books was a bit of surprise for me.

Anyways, before going to this event, I promised myself to just spend a certain and limited amount of money so I prepared two options: to buy EITHER this poetry book by Rupi Kaur OR Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy. I’ve already read this trilogy on eBook twice but I’ve always still wanted to have the real books in my hands. That’s why it was on the top of my priority list that day. But I still prepared a second option if ever I couldn’t find Jenny Han’s book set: Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey. The reason why it was the back up plan aside from me also loving poetry, was because it was what Jessa recommended (but it was more like a demand, actually lol) me before leaving the house that morning.

I first saw Jenny Han’s books but the problem was, we weren’t able to find the second book (during our first attempt). So it was just To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. Ferdi and I already finished checking every booth and yet, I wasn’t able to find the complete set still. While roaming around tho, looking for the trilogy and Ferdi’s “airplane” books and really just roaming and checking every booth out, I found Cathy Bartel’s Every Teen Girl’s Little Pink Book of Prayers and since I love Cathy Bartel and God knows how much her books meant to me for it led me to seeking Him in my life, I bought it. I bought it at CBC Publishing’s booth with this little pink notebook of 100 Bucket List. But buying them weren’t enough since they were unplanned and I was desperate of going home with either of my two options in hand. That’s why we went back to the first booth that we’ve been to and he ended up buying this Sherlock Holmes’ book set. I was starting to lose hope when all of a sudden, I saw Milk and Honey misplaced on one of the shelves near the counter. And I thought, that was it. I grabbed and bought it. While we were already leaving tho, we realized that there was a 20% discount for ALL the books. That’s when I had that sudden urge to go back and just really look for the entire set of Jenny Han’s books!

Marina Oysters Seafood Grill

He told me that we could come back after grabbing lunch since we haven’t realized that it was already passed one in the afternoon. We went back to MOA but ended up choosing one of the restaus by the Bay. We had our lunch at Marina Oysters Seafood Grill. I tried their Bangus Salpicao while he had their Fish Finger. And since we were craving for oysters, we also ordered their Marina Famous Baked Oysters. It was a great meal and we really enjoyed the food.

After our eating our lunch, we then went back to SMX Convention Center and went home with not just one of my options in hand. I had both the poetry book and the book set! Yay? Yay! Sure thing, I spent a lot that day but it was all worth it. My heart’s very happy! ♥

September 16th | Sunday

Starbucks, Greenfield District

On Sunday, I got to tick another To Do on my list — to avail Starbucks’ Statement Cup (the pink one with the “FEARLESS” word on it!). And no, people. I didn’t want it because I am a “Swiftie.” I wanted it for two reasons: one was because it is pink (duh?) and the other reason was the message of the cup itself — FEARLESS. Because that’s what I was going for this year — to be fearless. And if there’s one who inspired me to be one was not Taylor but Nikita Gil and her poem, “Her Name Will Be Fearless.”

It was indeed a great weekend with the loves. Books? Coffee? Plus, I got to see another side of him and it's a good feeling to know him more. And when I say "to know him," I mean, to really know him. We had these endless chats about family, life, adulting, and all those random stuff and I think, I went home yesterday liking him even more. It also amazes me how I could easily open up to him. Being with him every time is so easy and comfy. Even the things that I don't want and couldn't easily tell to others, with him, it just naturally comes out. Every time we're together, I feel like it's inevitable baring my soul to him. He gets the realness out of me so naturally. And I think that's something I haven't felt for so long. I'm not even sure if I already felt such thing before.

I am such a happy hooman! A quaintrelle who emphasizes life passion through these leisurely pastimes and cultivate life pleasures, indeed. ♥
