hello and welcome to the horseimagebarn weekly interaction recap where every friday i respond to all the fun reblogs and comments and such from the past week

first off another bit of housekeeping which is that if you mention me somewhere or tag me or comment or something it is likely you will not receive a response because i do not like to clutter my blogs feed with public responses so i wont reply to every single thing as i feel it takes away from the purpose of this account which is horse images and also i cannot comment as this is a secondary blog so if you wish to contact me and receive a response please dm me whatever you want to as my dms are always open or use the ask function if it is a question or statement you think is humorous or suitable to be published to my blog and if you are not comfortable with this that is okay because rest assured i read every single notification i receive and i wordlessly appreciate each one

apologies to continue the trend of a little announcement at the top this is something that has been plaguing me as i dont want anyone to think i am ignoring them or did not see that they were thinking of me as i always do see it and am always honored to be on the minds of others

i will also now be responding to asks here that i deemed not essential or didnt answer because i didnt want to spam so now is a time of excitement and joy

but i think they like it

i stand by the belief that no man could conjure up the idea of a horse without any prior knowledge of one they are fully unique and real and are unable to be made up just because of the broadness of their concept

one might say there is something morally reprehensible about humans tearing down environments to create spaces of inside where only humans and their chosen pet creatures are permitted and anything else is considered a pest or intruder that is to say i believe horses should be allowed inside if they want to go inside

though i know taste is subjective and that all fruits of nature are beautiful and deserving of enjoyment and that i ought to keep my personal opinions to myself on the horseimagebarn account i will stand by my statement that apples are in fact yummy specifically red delicious apples are my favorite

redraws or edits or anything of the images i post are always permitted as i do not claim ownership of any image i post as i am not the original photographer of any of the images though i wish i was because what a life it would be to live taking so many humorous pictures of horses

i do not have autism i think but i appreciate you friend

i see many people comment on this so fun fact the neighhhh tag i use only for the horse images i post so that when perusing my account or archive if you wish to only see the horse images and not any reblogs or asks or similar non-horse image things you may sort via the neighhhh tag and also if you were not aware the reason the horses are often tagged with a strange word or emotion is because the horses are sorted based on 10 emotions being love friendship sloth lament anger cursed indulgence whimsy intelligence and joy so you can more easily find the emotion youre looking for when on the hunt for specific horse images

Well. How did I study?? You’re gonna hate it, but there’s literally no other way around it.

HEAR ME OUT: That’s just how learning works. That’s how learning any style ever works. If you’re trying to draw in a particular art style, you have to learn how it’s drawn. And the only way really understand to do that, is by trying to recreate it almost exactly. WHICH YEAH, this is an internet space, once you say the work “copy” next to art suddenly you have no skill or are doing something inherently immoral just on principle. Which is just a really bad faith read. It’s a lot like “master studies” in art classes, where students have to recreate the same drawing/work from some previous artist and try to get it as close as possible to the original. Which seems dumb at first, but it’s not without a point- y’know?

As a wack teenager, I used to practice trying to “master” the look of the zexal style by drawing on paper a loooot. At the time I didn’t know how to draw digitally (i didn’t have access to a lot of things). Zexal model sheets were rare if almost nonexistent, so I could only use the anime. I must’ve did a decent enough job since to this day my old art floats around with no one realizing that some idiot teenager drew them in her room. I just really wanted to learn it for some reason. Honestly, I blocked out most of my life from that era, so I can barely remember my own reasoning.

So I think I’d suggest, at least since the resources are much more readily available now, to refer to the model sheets and probably try redrawing what you see in those. I don’t have the old sketches anymore, but back then on my own time, I’d try recreating stuff like this as I saw it:

Or, HECK!!! If there’s an art style from particular episodes you like a lot, try referring to those and use that. There’s a ton of elements in the model sheets I don’t much care for, or elements applied by certain animation directors I like more than others that I’ll incorporate into my own work. So in the end you kind of do learn more about your own style and tastes. BUT, I personally wouldn’t jump straight into this right away. Maybe just keep it in mind until u get comfier.

THIS post that illustrates what I mean visually in regards to different directors and their styles a little better lmao. They’re all “on model” but u can tell them apart despite using the same “style.”

SCREENSHOT REDRAWS are a more fun kind of practice!! When I was in the more active learning stage I’d often try redrawing my favorite shots on paper and try to get as close as feasibly possible. I only did that because I wanted to learn it.

Nowadays, I just target weirder looking shots because. Lmao. You know 😩 after years of learning what I like in the style … … it’s a fun self challenge

Screenshot redraws are also just good practice for me even when I’m just goofing. Because when I’m not actively practicing, my muscle memory starts to fail me.

Or, if you aren’t directly recreating an existing image and still want to practice, I’d suggest keeping the model sheets (or whatever influence u refer to) with you and try drawing within the realms set up. References are your friends and wanna help u. Even the best homies out there will use them, plz don’t undersell them. You aren’t any better or worse for using them 😭

AFTER A GOOD WHILE OF DOING THAT SORT OF THING you’ll probably get a feel for it a lot more. Then, as per how art works, the style will shift more into your own take on it, and then you can just do whatever you want and take your personal liberties as u see fit

OH RIGHT, DIGITAL OR TRADITIONAL??? …Idk. When i was learning i always drew on paper (mostly due to circumstance). It varies from person to person on which is more “effective,” but I don’t think it ultimately matters lol

Hey! I’ve always wanted to draw the pnf and MML characters, but have no idea where to start. Can you give me some tips?

Since I mainly draw Cavendish and Dakota, I can give you tips on how to draw them! I’ve never really taught anyone how to draw anything, so I’ll give you tips that I wish I knew when I first started drawing them. First things first, whenever you want to draw a character from a show, you should have some references. It makes it easier to know what they look like. Because sometimes if you try to draw them from memory, you might make some mistakes. It’s good to have more than one because sometimes even a reference can have mistakes in them. I’ve gathered a hand full for myself to look at to remind me how they look like. But don’t rely on them too much! You want to draw something original, you don’t want to redraw it (only do that for practice). Use references to remind yourself what they look like.

Cavendish’s hat is probably the hardest thing to draw from him. And it’s hard to explain. The base of the band on his hat connects with how it sits on his head. The edges of the hat dips down at the front and back, the sides springs up. The goggle lends that is closer to the center of the hat, usually faces more towards the view than the one next to it. It faces slightly away.

Another hard thing for me was Dakota’s hair. His hair is a bit more messy in the show than how I normally draw him, but one thing is for sure, he has 9 lumps of hair on his head, then a swoosh, then too more lumps. For his forehead, sometimes it’s 5 or 6 lumps. And a lot of the times in the show, you don’t even get to see Dakota’s eyebrows. But I like to draw them because I think he looks better with eyebrows.

Cavendish’s nose goes out and in and covers a bit of his eye. AND, his mustache always covers part of his mouth. When he’s smiling in this drawing, only his bottom lip is showing and the end of his smile. The rest is covered by his mustache. You dont get to see the top of his mouth because of the mustache.

Sometimes it can be hard to draw a pose. YOU ARE YOUR BEST REFERENCE! Whip out a camera and take a picture of yourself doing the pose. I have so many stupid pictures of me on my phone, doing weird poses. If you don’t have a camera, try to convince or threaten a friend or family member to do the pose so you know how it looks like. If you’re bad at drawing hands, take pictures of your hands! I also have a whole bunch of pictures of my hands.

FLIP YOUR IMAGE! This one is a tip that I love! I use it all the time. It’s one of the best tips I’ve ever heard. Sometimes your image looks good, but when you flip/mirror the image, then it helps you see what’s wrong with it. In this quick sketch, after I flipped it, I can see that Cavendish’s head is leaning too much to the left. Now that I can see the mistake, I can fix it. The reason why this happens is because sometimes we draw things leaning towards one direction without realizing it, when you flip an image, it gives you an instant new point of view of the image. If you don’t draw on your computer, you can hold the piece of paper with the drawing on it facing towards a light source. Then, looking at the other side of the paper, it gives you a flip/mirror effect. And last, but it’s the most important tip I can give you, is... Your drawings don’t have to be perfect. Especially when you start to draw. I have so many sketches and drawings that I’ve never posted online. If you draw something and you don’t like it, that’s okay. Practice is truly the best way to get better at drawing. It takes a really long time to get good at drawing. I’ve been drawing for around 4 years now and I still feel like I’m not good enough at drawing.

so. ach’m. he is an amphibious alien character thats been with me for a long time and i havent had the feeling for him in YEARS. but i have to talk about him because hes still got a special place in my heart despite my uh... abandonment of him.

this is really long so it’s under a cut

first things first: his name, Ach’M Raten, is pronounced, Ahk-mm Rah-ten. it has a meaning to it because apparently those are names derived from words in his people’s language, which you’ll find out about more later.

he was someone i made when i was RIGHT in the middle of my Alien phase, and was also just starting my OCT xDDD phase on deviantArt. (i was. not good at octs bc i had no concept of cohesive storytelling in a limited timeline comic format and also had really bad add that made it impossible to ever finish anything.) the OCT he was apart of was Tapestry of Horror, which, honestly i think my audition comic for that was the only good one i made for that entire tourney. this was his reference for it:

ahh, look at that. the nostalgia is all coming back to me. the amount of “:U” which was a go-to face for 13 year old me. this was posted back in 2010! wow!

the reason the 63 on his age is crossed out is because THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY THE ORIGINAL REFERENCE I HAD FOR HIM! i had to redraw him because his original reference (which unfortunately has been lost to the annals of time) was too human looking? and tapestry of horror was an anthro/alien/no-human-faces tourney, so they told me i should probably change his face up some and then he’d be fine, and ORIGINALLY, ACH’M WAS AN OLD MAN. I DON’T KNOW WHY I ALSO CUT HIS AGE IN HALF BUT IT’s PROBABLY BECAUSE I WAS THE INDECISIVE BASTARD THEN THAT I STILL AM TODAY.

supposedly he used to slink around in shadows and laugh and speak in rhymes, and im pretty sure that was a side effect of edgy 13 year old interests? like, i think i tried giving him kind of a creepy serial killer vibe? and then just never executed it? he had an epithet of, The Laughing Cyborg, which is still relevant in later versions of him.

oh and here, have some TOP SECRET ACH’M LORE COURTESY OF THE IMAGE DESCRIPTION OF HIS REFERENCE:

i don’t believe i was lying. i think i did originally make an amphibious alien woman character that just later evolved into ach’m. i’m sure if i had any of my sketchbooks from that age physically with me i would ABSOLUTELY be able to find it and show you guys but i dont so, rip.

because i was trying to be coy and ~*~mysterious~*~ i never originally explained his backstory on his reference. it was planned to be something revealed overtime through ~*~dramatic~*~ flashbacks and dream sequences that i did not have the ability to execute. its always followed the same beats, though: ach’m and his younger brother were child refugees from a civil war on his home planet. in their initial escape, ach’m is caught under a crumbling wall and loses his leg, and they’re later found and adopted by a retired opera singer of another species. through vague never-established family issues, ach’m leaves his adoptive mother and joins a travelling circus.

this is his adoptive mother:

her name is (and i’m sorry) Nippeteranulzenkodelonio. You can just call her Nippy, though. Please just call her Nippy.

god, her species used to be called draconae? what the heck. in future designs, those religious symbols are obsolete and replaced with other symbols relating to a galaxy-wide secret society that has NOTHING to do with ach’m and i never figured out how nippy was involved in it, so we’re not delving into that.

they both come from a planet called Naruviie, which in his language just means, “Land of the People,” “naru” being the part that means people. i never like, fully fleshed out their planet aside from very vague allusions to it being mostly swampland populated by cute little amphibious animals like this fun guy:

SO BACK TO ACH’M AND THE TAPESTRY OF HORROR: i only won the first round because my opponent had to drop out, and i lost the second round. it didn’t really matter though, because ach’m remained an incredibly popular character to followers of the tourney, and No, It Was Not Because Of Me. it was because one of the other competitors who i was friends with included him in her rounds, mostly for jokes, and i thought it was the best thing ever. the problem with that though, was that even though in every entry for the tourney she would say IN THE DESCRIPTION that he was NOT her character, everyone thought he was. because she was just a more well-known artist in that community, and i was just. some 13 year old.

but anyway, she was a more competent storyteller than i was so she actually like... gave him more character than i was capable of at the time, and she would ask me if i characterized him wrong and i would always be like, “NO ITS GREAT HES PRETTY MUCH WHAT I WANTED HIM TO BE BUT JUST COULD NOT WRITE FOR WHATEVER REASON!” not that i ever expressed it like that because... from what i remember about my 13 year old self... i was very Virgo in all of my statements. yikes.

im not close with that artist anymore, and our interests have diverged a lot since then, but i always think back to that time with fondness. for my tween mind, having an artist that i looked up to see my character and actually like them enough to do that absolutely had a profound effect on me at the time.

ALRIGHT NOW FOR THE NEXT VERSION OF ACH’M, 2015:

see i told you his name had a meaning. and look, i even gave his language a name! wow! such developments!

his backstory didn’t really change, except this time instead of a wall falling on him and crushing his leg, he was just born with a bad leg that had to get amputated. apparently. i also changed up his personality more. instead of him being this one dimensional jokey boy that talked in a bad accent, he became more of this like... roguish bardish type of character? he’s more flirty, more prone to being pride and false bravado, tells ridiculous stories of his life to appear more dashing, and, get this: i literally put in his updated backstory that he used to work more Colorful Jobs (ie: he was a prostitute at some point)

his brother also has more of a presence and an actual character? i think i planned on him being dead in his 2010 iteration. Orith in this version is a grouchy mechanic/space engineer with a prosthetic eye. oh yeah that’s right him and ach’m were like. attacked by giant birds at some point in their childhoods? i think i had it that the giant birds were a natural predator of his fucking species????????? and thats why ach’m is missing an arm and an ear

and that leads us to the latest ach’m that i’ve drawn which is these sketchy things from 2016

his cybernetic arm looks completely different now, he doesn’t have the robot ear anymore and his brother (wow an actual picture of his brother!) doesn’t even have a robot eye, and nippy now looks actually old and is like. completely blind now. i didn’t even realize my art style changed THAT much in the span of like, one and a half years until like.. JUST now. wow.

he definitely looks like more of a scumbag now, and i don’t think i ever made anymore drastic changes to his backstory. i’m probably going to take another crack at it though because uhhhhh i dont like a lot of the implications i made in his backstory lmfao.

anyway yeah that’s the story of ach’m!
