[ID: A colored, digital comic featuring characters from Dey's Links Meet AU with a focus on Mask. The colors are muted and warm.
The group walk through a forest marked as "Rancher's Era." Rancher leads the group, commenting that they're "Almost there". Tiny, Tracks, Mask, Vet and Sky follow behind him, in that order.
"Oh, how sad..." someone says. A skeleton rests against a tree, sword and shield in hand, wearing the Hero's Shade armor. Mask's shadow casts upon the skeleton, their head lining up right with the skull.
Mask furrows their brow, expression near indiscernible.
"Kid, hurry up!" Mask rolls their eyes and turns to follow.
Sky waves to Mask as they run ahead to catch up. Their eyes are not visible. End ID]

It's artist appreciation time cause I feel like it
I wanna start of with my bestie @hex-touchstarved even though they're not in the murder drones fandom:
Really beautiful and interesting art with the monotone colors (black n white) and has so much personality, I wanna see more u b!ch
Okay now into the murder drones artists :]
@projectanomaly - such a cute, simple and recoginzable art style and WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DRAW WITH YOUR FINGER ON YOUR PHONE?! Such creative ideas and designs too and I especially love the ELS drawings bc they straight up look like somebody took a screenshot of an actual animated series (AND I'M A SUCKER FOR THAT)
@ayloverlove - SO much story writing potentional with her art. Her art has so much personality in it and always looks like you can imagine a story with them. Makes top notch angst and crack drawings too and always has such fun (or angsty) ideas that she draws and it looks sooo good with her detailed art-style.
@vaneplane I'M A SUCKER FOR THE GLOW, their art always look so delicious idk why. Their shading style is so recognizablell, all the glow, the pretty colors, THE EXPRESSIONS ON THE CHARACTERS ARE SO FUN TOO.
@lumineary-arts Top notch character expressions. Her art style is so simple yet has also so much personality, especially with how she draws the way the characters pose and facial expressions. ALSO, SO CLEAN LINEART WTH???
@astronic-fr I usually never laugh at funni art except when it's astronic. How can somebody be so funny and talented at the same time?? And when he draws angsty stuff it hits SO HARD, like how can you do both and be so good at it?! The art style fits so well with the things he draws, it's so good, goofy when it needs to be and heartwrenching beautiful too
@triocat Such an unique and recognizable art style like I have never seen somebody draw like they do and it looks so good. And don't get me started on their animations like holy hell, how can somebody be so good at animating, I'd deadass watch an entire series animated by them.
@just-a-lil-otter Doesn't draw as much MD I think BUT STILL, such a cute and simple art style that always makes me happy to see. It's that type of art style that just works so well with digital and traditional art styles, idk how to elaborate lmao
@buoyanttoaster let's motivate my boyfriend to draw more CAUSE HE'S GENIUNLY REALLY GOOD AND I FR WANNA SEE HIM DRAW MORE
@lilywily143 such cute and creative ideas and comics, I'm a sucker for them. I fr think her art style would work so well as digital art too but getting stuff for that is hella expensive (sometimes)
@lilblucat idk how to describe her art, it's soo good like?? I love just watching it, I don't wanna repeat all the other points I've said ahhh but I'm really running out of things to say. I REALLY REALLY REALLY love her shading, especially the soft shading she does on some art pieces and the doodles are so cute too rahhhhh
@evanostic so cute art, I could scroll thru their profile for ages to see them :') also I'm a sucker for the blue/purple-ish tint in some of their art and the way they draw expressions and poses are so cute, so expressive and just a joy to look at
Tell me if I've missed some artists

Have u ever posted your comic or animation workflow anywhere? Im super curious on how you tackle the process, especially not using a drawing tablet. I know you have a very simple (and adorable) style so that probably helps in terms of workflow -- Im just curious about the steps you take.
Thank you! With both comics and animation my key thing is to not spend too much time on any particular thing, just draw loose and fast. Honestly the only downside to drawing with a mouse is that I can tell my arm has extremely specific muscle memory regarding it- if my mouse breaks and I get a new one I have to spend a good month or so just letting my hand get used to it again lol. Same with if my setup gets readjusted too much- right now my setup is my mouse on one of those padded mousepads, on top of 2 books, with my elbow resting on my 3DS case (I'll get an actual pillow or something for it eventually lol). But luckily thanks to this I suffer very minimal wrist pain 👍
(...Okay I started to go really in depth in my process here, so sorry if this is way more than what you were asking. Putting it under a readmore just to save space lol)
With MFM in particular, I start by writing out the entire script for the next story arc, which really is just all of the dialogue and vague notes about any important actions. Then I do the paneling with very loose stick-figure like sketches of where the characters are and what they're doing. I prefer having very little planning when it comes to character poses and panel shapes, coming up with those on the fly makes things much more exciting and faster to make. But it's the opposite with dialogue... it needs to be 100% FINAL before I draw a single line lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's part of my script for my most recent chapter, as well as what my extremely loose goofy thumbnail sketching is like. I write the script as one big thing and don't separate it into pages until I actually start drawing- then I go and color change it just to keep track of what dialogue goes on each page
After that, I go back and do the ACTUAL sketch, as well as the lettering (I don't believe this is how it's done professionally. I used to do lettering as the very last step in the process... but then found it hard to cram speech bubbles in the right places lmao.) After that is lineart, coloring, background flat colors, then shading/rendering for all of it. I do each step in batches, as in I sketch out ALL pages of a chapter before moving to lineart, I line ALL pages before starting coloring, etc. I find it way easier to be productive when it's broken up like that, though when I first started the comic I used to draw each page to completion before starting the next (but also, the comic's style was DRASTICALLY simpler back then haha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Unfortunately I merged some of the shading to the background flat colors so it's not entirely accurate... oops) FireAlpaca has a sand texture feature that I only found out about last year- adding that to the backgrounds makes them look 10x better with WAY less effort.
With animation, it depends on the project. For simple 5-10 second animation I make for fun, there's very little planning lol. I skip some steps in the process- I'll sketch out the keyframes (and maybe any difficult inbetweens if necessary), line those, then go straight into making linework inbetweens. I'm not a cleanup artist and have no experience in that, so I always find trying to line my rough animation makes everything jittery and wobbly. If I do it with a clean line from the start then I can avoid that and save a lot of time 👍
For my bigger projects (such as the Parvey cartoon and the MFM Kickstarter trailer), I do the whole animatic with final audio first and foremost, with the animatic being almost like the keyframes. I split them up into individual shots, .mp4 files anywhere between 1-30 seconds usually, and animate those one at a time. I'm a huge fan of free to use programs and try to use them as much as I possibly can, here's a list of the ones I use:
FireAlpaca- for the actual drawing part itself (storyboarding/animating/etc). FireAlpaca has a feature that lets you export every frame as it's own drawing, as well as an onion skin mode
Windows Movie Maker- for compiling all of those frames into video format, creating individual shots. If you upload all of your frames and set them to around 0.08 seconds, it equals about 12fps (I usually animate at 0.10 seconds/10fps, its a bit slower but looks nice)
Onlinesequencer.net- for making music. It's the place I've made all of my songs on, like the timeloop song, hyperworkaholic, and the background music for the MFM Kickstarter trailer.
Audacity- for editing audio/music. Also great for recording things directly from your desktop
DaVinci Resolve- for editing and putting together all of the shots into one big video. Can get kind of intensive on the computer during rendering, so watch out.
YouCut (app)- also for editing and compiling shots, I used this one a lot a couple years back but I'm not sure how well it holds up. Doesn't need much phone storage to download but needs a lot to render videos.
MS Paint (yes really)- for typing up text. FireAlpaca has a text option but I don't like it as much as Paint's.
...The only thing I genuinely can't do alone is voice acting. Luckily there's a big voice acting community on Twitter and they're all amazing to work with!
This got... way more in depth than I planned for it to be, so sorry if this is way more than what you were asking lol. But that's my general process when it comes to my art 👍

i'm not going to pretend like i think nobody is interested cuz this is the best movie of 2023 and you cannot tell me otherwise and also everyone has been waiting for this for forever so
SPOILER WARNING I AM RANTING ABOUT SPIDERMAN ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE SO BEWARE IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED IT YET
im writing this because i wasnt able to fully rant to my friends and my family doesnt want to listen so i dont really care and im screaming out into the void of tumblr. will someone hear me? i wonder
ANYWAYS (listening to the fire soundtrack as i write this)
that was the best movie i've ever seen and arguably even better than the first one. i am simply obsessed with every single detail of this movie and i cannot stop thinking about it. also me and friend were basically freaking out about everything cuz it was so damn good i cannot even stop.
there was a huge amount of parallels to the other spiderman content that we've seen and i love the way they incorporated them. the way miles saved gwen when falling during that one fight scene with spot. the bus scene with pavitr and gayatri who btw i am totally obsessed with. the way all the words that O'Hara said to miles were basically opposite of what his mother said to him earlier in the movie. the way he was listening to music on his bed when gwen showed up. the scenes from other universes where its mcu canon??? the reference to earth 19999 from miguel??? and a ton more of course
because i am also desi (lore reveal!) and also just because he was done so well. im just sad that they did not include more of him in the movie after his earth canon event was disrupted. it felt pretty raw to see almost the same scene from no way home in across the spiderverse with pavitr instead of tom holland. i also like that regardless of what consequences it has later, even if he doesnt know yet, he's able to save inspector singh. also mentionable is that they switched from mira jain to gayatri singh. in the spiderman india comics they had mira jain and props to the creators for the rep for jains cuz they don't get seen in media very much or at all for whatever reason. maybe cuz most of it is now like gwen stacy canon or whatever? idk someone if u know explain to me please
not related to parallels i almost cried at gwen's speech just cuz it resonated with me so much. thats all about that anyways anyways anyways
the art
god i could go on about the art forever. HAVE YOU SEEN IT? TELL ME THAT IS NOT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SCENE EVER!!!!!!!!!!! every single city scene just blew my mind and the coloring and style of every single spiderman and scene was just stunning and how was it the most amazing thing i've ever seen?????? i cannot get over the coloring for half the scenes. i love the cities differences and the way that everything falls together in each world. my friend pointed out that when miles put his jacket on in earth-42, it was colored purple and black instead of his usual colors, which indicated so much of how he was prowler in this world instead of spiderman. i think it was interesting also to see that switch of character and did you see the way that his face was much more aged as prowler? there were a lot more lines there and he looked more mature in a way. miles morales from earth-1610 had cleaner lines and a lot more chill vibe. also like the character design for miles morales earth 42 holy shit bro that was so cool i cannot even did u see the lines on his chest and the helmet/headpiece thing the way it opened and his hair and voice and omg
ughh don't even mention the ending cuz why did they have to leave on such a cliffhanger like that??? we have to wait until i think next year for the next movie and i will be in the theaters on that premeire night regardless of what i have to get done that night i dont care. im so excited to see what they will do next i can already imagine some of it and its gonna be so beautiful!!!!!!!!!! <333
thanks for reading to the end. i love you guys!

would u recommend working w kids? they are so so sillay. also leo being second oldest is very real to me and i love that your vibes for her are summer camp counselor
HI!! that's a complicated question because it really depends on who you are and what your needs are. kids are adorable and hilarious and i find their company extremely fulfilling, but they're also LOUD and EXHAUSTING, and you need to have a certain tolerance for screaming, grabbing, bluntness, and (if you work with toddlers like me) the occasional poopy situation. if you have sensory issues like me, I'd strongly recommend establishing a set time and place to recharge every day, (or even bringing headphones if you're able to) and setting clear boundaries, like "my body needs space right now," "i don't like being touched there, thank you," etc. (which also teaches them consent/setting their own boundaries as a bonus). if you've never really worked with kids before, you might look for opportunities to substitute, or even volunteer at libraries and whatnot to get a sense of how it feels for you. i feel like everyone remembers a teacher from their childhood who just hated their job and made it everyone's problem, so don't be that person. i guess what I'm trying to say is that it's important to put your wellbeing first, or you'll be miserable, and that will rub off on the kids.
personally, i love how kids are naturally curious and blunt. they will just say whatever. and it IS extremely exciting and fulfilling to watch them learn and grow in real time, because they absorb information SO FAST. it's important to be observant and patient and non-judgmental and kind, because they WILL emulate your behavior. every single day I'm delighted and surprised by one of them saying something sweet out of nowhere, supporting or comforting a friend, resolving a conflict on their own, pronouncing a word like CRUSTACEAN that's way beyond their usual reading level, or randomly asking to hold my hand or sit on my lap when they've never done that before....
HOWEVER. do not tell my employers i said this, but I'd eventually like to work with slightly older kids, like 6-8 year olds, because i feel like that's the age range where they've kind of had a chance to develop personalities and hobbies and interests (beyond favorite colors and animals and whathaveyou), and they're starting to learn how to make jokes and insult people but they just go about it in the funniest way possible. and their imaginary games have extended plotlines, and theyll sometimes just decide to write an entire comic book or movie script in an afternoon. and you can actually hold a conversation with them, wheras toddlers will often just lose interest and walk away if they don't immediately grasp something. you also have to be very direct with toddlers, which is something I'm still getting used to just because i really dislike talking down to people of any age or size. like do NOT get me wrong, i LOVE my 3-5 year olds, but i do miss babysitting 8 year olds from time to time. and age is something to consider, again, especially if you're squeamish about bathroom stuff. *shudders and stares off into the distance*
anyways that was probably a way longer answer than you wanted and just a bunch of nonsense words. tl;dr the answer is Yeah. If you want. ❤️

i LOVE LOVE LOVE how you use color for your illustrations (specifically referencing that one TGCF comic), do you have any tips for developing such a use of color? or did you study any particular artist? i’d love 2 learn more abt how u got to that style
Hello, thank you so much!! <3
I wish I could share some really cool tips for color usage, but honestly, most of my coloring process boils down to just "doing as my heart tells me" and playing around with the correction layers :D
I usually stick to some basic rules with coloring. Like avoiding using black, white and grayish colors and settling for more vibrant colors instead. Or using complementary tones. So I guess picking up a color theory would be a good start? Even if you already know all of this, it never hurts to refresh your knowledge.
I didn't study any particular artist, but what I like to do is to look up color palettes from animated shows. I think it makes a good exercise, since most of the animated shows are sticking to the limited color palettes. Just pick up a show you like and try to copy several different shots from it without using a color picker. My faves when it comes to colors are Promare and Steven Universe but ofc you can choose literally anything else.
Sorry, it's probably not very useful for you but that's all I know :')
Don't be afraid to experiment and completely change colors in the process, use references, take inspiration from other people's art, don't be afraid to break rules and more importantly don't forget to have fun with your works!!

Sorry if you've already said but can I ask what age you started drawing? I'm in my twenties wondering what sort of skill level I can acquire if I haven't been applying myself very much before this point
i have been drawing for as long as i can remember. i started wanting to actively improve my technical skills when i was a teenager; i think i started learning how to actually actively improve my technical skills (on purpose instead of by accident, lol!) in my 20s.
(also -- as wordy as it may be, you'll notice i'm really particular about saying "technical skill" over and over! this is because it is only one factor of what drawing is, but a lot of times when ppl talk about being "good at" drawing, tech skill is what they really mean. when i say technical skill, i'm usually referring to draftsmanship, the ability to draw things not just accurately/realistically, but as they appear in your head; your hand doing what your mind tells you to, your ability to meet your own intentions/expectations for a piece, however it makes sense to conceptualize it. it is NOT the most important part of drawing, not by a long shot, but realistically it's often the sticking point for people who are learning + it can be one of the big struggles in keeping morale up.)
these may seem like finicky distinctions to make, but to me they make sense! bc the benefit we may have starting as adults is a better grasp of how to CONSCIOUSLY study and improve on specific areas of a skill, vs the passive improvement that will generally happen from pure directionless repetition. i feel that i've had jumps in my technical skill level over the course of a year or two as an adult that are bigger than my improvement through all of middle + high school, for example -- and i bring this up bc if what ur concerned about is technical skill, that is not purely 100% about time invested, and starting later than some does not mean you're at some kind of massive insurmountable disadvantage.
in that specific example, the difference as an adult was going into it with intentional curiosity and a drive to specifically improve, vs middle + high school was six years of me happily drawing the same 4-5 characters floating from the waist up in perpetuity. were those years wasted bc i wasn't drilling myself and doing studies? fuck no! but my progress was different, bc i was focused on other, equally important parts of learning to draw. (like discovering + honing my own tastes, consuming a lot of media that inspired me, and having fun!!!!)
SO, anyway, my personal perspective on the skill level u can attain if u start now: the same as anyone else!! and i don't think i'm being like, sunny or unreasonably optimistic in saying so. i think keeping ur chin up and being patient w urself as u learn to draw is generally way harder than actually drawing, for literally everyone. u have to make a lot of dogshit drawings to eventually make good ones, and that is the part that's actually really really hard. but u can make decisions about how and where to apply the time u invest that may show u visible progress in ways you'll find surprising! (pls balance that time with shit that's just fun, too.)
in case it's helpful, i'll leave u with a different very wordy multi-para response where i talk about where to start if you'd like to learn to draw with no/little prior experience: here! it's def not comprehensive and is totally colored by my own opinions/perspective on art, and specifically on illustration/comics, but i hope it might be a starting point :)

I thought the Two Slow Dancers comic would be a fun opportunity to break down my process a lil bit cause this was a lot of undoing and redoing and adding so for any ppl curious it will be under the cut!!
So to start off I actually only thumbnailed what is now page five and six, the original image in my mind was them reaching out to each other in different seasons clothing, I considered just making an animated version of that but then I connected it to the two slow dancers scene I had imagined in my head a month or so back and wanted to make it part of a small narrative:
Tumblr media
(I actually did page six first - u can tell by the way my writing is nearly incomprehensible that this idea came to me like a vision in the night)
But then looking at that i said - well surely that doesn’t tell the story enough. I need more. And then I played two slow dancers on repeat for probably an hour while I thumbnailed a surrounding narrative for those two pages and ended up with this mess:
Tumblr media
And from there I actually started working on the lineart two pages at a time - I like working on freakishly large two page spreads because to me it helps the flow feel more cohesive, I don’t look at them as isolated pages until I get to the shading part of the process.
Tumblr media
But once I sent it to some ppl for feedback and reread it myself a million times I felt like the story still wasn’t reading the way I wanted it to - two out of six pages were “flashbacks/memories” pages and that ratio didn’t really allow for the other four pages to read as a cohesive story in my opinion so I kept trying to workshop two more pages for the front and I went through a few iterations:
Tumblr media
I thought at first I would show the outside of the garrison, give the audience more of a setting, and then show the flyer so we know Keith is getting ready for this celebration. But it was too literal for me (even though what I ended up doing was still pretty literal lmao). So then I started with the phone/text messages as a story telling device:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also this is an example of how I almost always draw the comic panels before I decide what goes in them haha, unless I’m really sure what images I plan on focusing in on the panels almost always end up informing what goes inside if that makes sense. But I finally ended up here when I decided “that’s good enough”
Tumblr media
I even did most of the lineart for this composition before I decided the imagery of the jacket was just too repetitive, like we don’t need THREE PAGES of keith putting on a jacket.
Tumblr media
So i kind of just moved the left page over to the right, and left the right page blank for most of the rest of the comic process. I finished most of the lineart on the rest of it before I finally circled back and decided to go with a tweak of what I originally thought was a lame idea (I had this image in my head of the lions silhouette against the glow of the Earth for the first page, but with the lyrics “the ground has been slowly pulling us back down” I thought it was just too cheesy, especially because that’s not what the lyrics mean either in the song or in the context of this comic and I didn’t want them to be perceived as so literal)
Tumblr media
So this is the thumbnail I landed on for that which eventually turned into the actual final page.
Once I had all of the thumbnailing done the rest was pretty fun work! Just lots of going back in and detailing out the scribbles I had first put down. Now in terms of color, I actually have a secret. Most times I don’t color much at all? It depends on the piece but for most of my comics what I do is this -
I flat greyscale color everything and then use a color curve adjuster inside of procreate to pick a color pallet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
color adjusters are ur friend for picking color pallets i'm TELLING YOU!! I used to have a lot of trouble with cohesive color comps but it's a lot easier for me even without using this method now. Anyway I usually leave it here, in my other comics I don't have any shading or background elements outside of the panels but I figured since I was working so much on this comic anyway, I might as well light it a bit. So I basically just scribbled over the whole composition with a purple marker set on a multiply layer and then erased out the places I wanted light to hit, and then added a soft light layer with colored lights to give it more of a party look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only hang up I had during the coloring process of all this was how to color the "memory" pages. I originally just wanted them to be more pastel/blue, I thought that would make them look distinct enough. So I painted/shaded this whole page before looking at it within the rest of the composition and deciding it didn't read well at all and ended up sliding the saturation down to zero and calling it a day:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I'm happy with that decision because it allowed for the "coming into color" moment with the other memory page and I think it connects better to the rest of the comic visually that way. And that was the whole process! There were tons of other little adjustments I made along the way and other composition things I tried out but I do tend to erase instead of iterate in layers so this is the process I have to show you! As a little bonus behind the scenes, here's the time lapse replay of that initial thumbnail for all eight pages! (it is sideways just because it's so large so if you're on a phone/tablet/laptop just turn ur screen sideways otherwise I'm so sorry lmao)

Hey, absolutely LOVE your art and I enjoy seeing your comics! Small question, how long does it take for you to make one page? And what is your process?
thank you!!!
THANK U!!!!!!!
it's a decidedly long-ish process and i'M KIND OF WONDERING HOW I MANAGED TO CHURN OUT TWO PER WEEK FOR A WHILE... (it was bad for my mental health i think is how). some artists can do like THREE OR EVEN FOUR PER WEEK!! but i am slow and so it takes me like 4-5 days to make one dfkjhgfdkjg
anyway first step is thumbnailing! that's when you make a tiny comic page and map out where you will have the panels, and what you want in them. also very good to figure out where your text bubbles will be at this stage.
NEXT!! transferring the thumbnail to a regular comic canvas! i like to thumbnail on paper with pencil because i eRASE STUFF A LOT (paneling is hard and i'm still learning), so i take a picture of it and then paste it onto the canvas >w>
NEXT!!! rough sketch phase. the picture quality tends to be jank as hell b/c i'm lazy & refuse to take more than one picture EVEN IF IT'S BLURRY, so i go over everything with a VERY QUICK SKETCH to lay out the same ideas. then I go in with a vector tool to make the panels!!
NEXT!!! Sometimes skipped depending on the page, is any 3D background work if I feel like i need it! which is usually always, because my perspective skills are uh. LACKING. (aND YES IT'LL TAKE LONGER TO LEARN PROPERLY IF I RELY ON 3D TOOLS BUT I DON'T CARE!! I JUST WANT TO TELL STORIES RIGHT NOW!)
this also involves MAKING the 3-d structure which i try to do if i know the scene i want to make is in a moderately complex looking area. it takes.......... so long............................ 3D modelling is hard....
NEXT!! Actual Sketch. This is me figuring out what the characters will look like Proper instead of throwing vague blobs on the page. i have to turn my brain on a higher setting for this part so it's usually a harder step for me. i also like to finish the background lineart by this stage.
NEXT!!! THE DREADED PEOPLE LINEART........ hardest stage. VERY BORING. lack the attention span for this to not be a horrific slog. HAVE TO HAVE SOME FORM OF ENTERTAINING NOISE ON OR ELSE CAN'T COMPLETE.
NEXT!! FLAT COLORS AND SHADOWS! self explanatory! i usually do the background first since it's cooler to watch characters come to life on an already completed BG.
NEXT!!!! Text stuff. Drawing out proper text bubbles, adding in text, changing the colors of the bubbles to match the characters.. this is also where i attempt to add SFX if there are any, and this is extremely difficult for me for whatever reason. STILL LEARNING LMAO.. i also blur stuff if i'm trying to show like... depth at this stage. like making one character blurry so you know they're closer to the "camera" so to speak
NEXT!!!!!!! AND FINALLY!!!! THE BEST PART!!!! Gradients. MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER. FUN TO APPLY. PULLS THE ENTIRE PAGE TOGETHER.
....................hm that's actually quite an involved & difficult process. i am only now realizing that
HM.

Hi I love your art, you have the ability to pack so much emotion into simple things… It’s amazing.
I have a question:Do you think it is beneficial for all rookies to learn art fundamentals and do dedicated learning? And did you personally spend any time studying art fundamentals ? thank uuu
Hi thank you for the kind words I'm obviously no authority on this but from the point of view of illustration: Yes, I do think so. . I studied art fundamentals for a few years on and off when I was more on the figuring out part of my style development. I think composition and color theory were the more important things to learn for me (They translated later into my other, more graphical art ventures too). Gesture drawing also kinda saved my characters more than anatomy. I always felt classic anatomy was a bit rigid and I kinda disregarded it for a while but since 2020 or so I started rly trying to observe how it works. Both have helped me tremendously in constructing weighty poses and character designs. (I think that's the best part of anatomy, really selling that your characters are actually standing in the scenery you built for them) I think any artist(illustrator moreso) that wants to develop a personal style should have at least a small grasp of fundamentals but I also think one absorbs that kind of knowledge with an observant eye, I can say personally most I've learned from art was from looking at other artists and how they solve illustrative/artistic problems(problem from a design definition). From big things like how do they compose a scene? communicate emotion? to more simple stuff like how do they draw eyes, or hands? (completely unrelated ramble but I think that last one is very prevalent in online artistic circles, when one artist develops an appealing solution this solution tends to spread, a bit like a DNA strand or meme, around their circles and the people who follow them, I've seen it happen to me, many friends and people who I don't know. I think it's an interesting phenomenon in how quickly it happens compared to pre-internet eras (can you tell it's more fun for me to observe social dynamics than to make art)) U can sometimes tell the difference slightly between an artist who studied fundamentals and one who didn't if you did study them (not saying one person is better or worse) Personally nowadays (not saying this is a good thing) I almost never practice anatomy unless there's a specific problem I want to tackle, but I believe that's only because for my current sensibilities, I've kind of developed a way to draw figures which suits me. Some people like drawing more realistic/classical stuff and kind of flexing those muscles but that's really never been me. On the subject of dedicated learning, if you mean going to a drawing school or course I can say it can only benefit you. In 2018 I went to a classic comic workshop for a few months and I still have retained things from it even if I ended up dropping it because it wasn't for me. Anyone who can drop you a bit of knowledge is great. Appart from all that, while I think it's beneficial.. I don't really think it's necessary, I don't know. I haven't Really studied fundamentals in years. I usually experiment inside my own style, observing and incorporating new things all the time. Trying out different tools, coloring processes, that kind of stuff. But of course, you have to Get to that point first. I always say I can't really do the same thing twice, and I really think it's true, it makes me feel a bit hacky. So I'm always trying to do something different or new (even when you compare two very similar pieces of mine you can tell there's differences; I never have a ruleset for making art). My girlfriend likes to draw and she never studied fundamentals, picking up stuff along the way, and we draw on relatively similar styles (even before we started being together), and I can tell you I've seen her make things which were super emotionally resonant, and deeply beautiful. I even think she's better than me at a few different aspects. When we draw together it's very fun This is just a bit of my personal history with classical learning, I hope it helped but as you may be able to tell I'm no authority in the subject, my experience is limited. I wish I could go on and on for 100000 words but there's a character limit on tumblr and I already cut this down a lot hahah

if ur on a bucky kick, how about some bucky/rabbit tension? like,,, bucky being a nervous idiot and rabbit feeding into it and,,, i mean they're in love your honor
Tumblr media
ALL BLACK     |     a vacant mirrors drabble
note: listen, we never really saw the horny idiots happen in vacant mirrors so have a taste. love u nonny, this is for all my vm!hoes who have stuck around through my loki chaos. this is short 'n' sweet.
pairing: bucky barnes/f!reader, from vacant mirrors
tags: drabble, a little blurb, rated t, fwb but like bffwb, sexual tension, sidekick action
(  MASTERLIST  )
"I do like the black, y'know."
Immediately, Bucky's breath catches — not enough for it to be noticeable, but definitely enough for the water he's sipping to go down the wrong pipe. Almost immediately, he reaches for the napkin in his lap and rattles out a nervous cough.
Can you fuckin' blame him?
I mean — Christ alive, he's got a lot on his mind. He knows that you, sitting across from him in a stunning little black dress, shouldn't exactly be the center of his attention right now. No, right now he should be keeping an eye out for Micael Sari. Right now, in the dimly lit, upscale restaurant perched somewhere along the New York City skyline, you're both on a bit of a mission.
Call it a mission-date.
You move to raise your glass of wine. You're smirking.
Fuckin' smirking.
Bucky hates the way he hangs on the movement — the way his eyes glue right to your wrist, your eyes, your mouth. He's distracted.
...God, you look great in that shade of lipstick.
He knocks his vibranium knuckles on the table and settle back into his chair. Beneath the table, he extends his long legs. You nudge him with a daringly high, crimson-colored heel.
He does look good — you aren't lying about that. I mean, hell, Bucky looks good even after a three hour boxing session at midnight, when he can't sleep. The man could, objectively, wear anything. Or nothing. He looks good in nothing, too. All of it. And none of it. But, mostly black.
You're a bit giddy with the fact that you can say that.
I mean — he's the Bucky Barnes.
And you're... well, you're best friends... with benefits, but less only the blowing-off-steam kind and more the I-don't-know-what-I'd-do-without-you sort.
Honestly, you and Bucky hadn't broached the topic.
Dr. Raynor and Dr. Hart had been trying — an admirable effort that is — to make the conversation more palatable for both of you. However, if you and Bucky are any two things, it's best friends and anxious.
Right now, this whole... thing... was working out.
It was good. It was... comfortable. And, frankly, you didn't need a label to know how Bucky felt about you. Him being openly flustered over even the slightest of advances tells you enough about where his feelings lay.
"You're teasing, Rabbit."
"Try flirting."
Bucky takes another sip of water. His look is almost scolding. The sort that is comically cynical and almost has you cracking a senior citizen joke. "More like distracting."
"Need me to reel it back in?" you ask honestly.
His eyes dart from your eyes to your mouth, down to your dress, then back up again. Suddenly, you can feel a prick of heat crawl up your neck. The look is... dark. The sort that's usually reserved for moments more intimate and very much well out of public eye.
Oh.
"Not much is gonna change unless you plan on losing that dress," he rumbles lowly and oh-so-casually, "I'll make sure of that later, though."
Bucky leans in the chair, arm draped over the back. He tilts his chin, then finally stokes the burning look. Suddenly, there's a rare surge of pride that washes over him. This time, you're the one squirming. He can see your breath catch — enough to drag the corners of his lips upward. Subtle. But proud.
Micael Sari better hurry up and show up.
You're both very ready for this mission-date to be over.
The sooner it is, the sooner that dress is off. And Bucky's all-black dress shirt and slacks combo will look better on the floor.

Mallet Mania AU!
Everything is the exact same, except Sweet has a mallet and an insatiable urge to smash, break, and destroy.
Tumblr media
[Huge thanks to @charliedzilla for helping me w/ the colors and pallette]
Lots of info below!
If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask!Since this AU is based on the game I haven't given SCC a relationship for this AU, but feel free to do whatever you want. (This also goes for making fan content of them, do whatever. The guy's unhinged.)(as long as it's not gross, ya know)
Feel free to make your own designs/color palettes for MM!Sweet!
AU: In general, it's all the same. He literally just has a mallet and can't stop breaking stuff. If he doesn't break stuff for a while he enters Mallet Mania, where he's uncontrollable.
Sweet doesn't like entering Mallet Mania because he can't control himself. If he does enter it he usually tries to fight back against the urge, but always fails. (It's not painful, it's just a little scary for him to know he can't stop himself. He sorta blacks out and can't remember everything).
When coming down from Mallet Mania, Sweet has a terrible headache and loud noise really hurts.
To avoid his boss battle all u have to do is get hit enough in the piano tile game for him to feel satisfied that he's ‘smashed’ the enemies enough. (Regular gameplay continues).
_________
Timeline:
Cap’n sees Noelle get kidnapped -> Tells Cakes & Sweet -> Sweet still follows you around, throwing spikes (they eject from the mallet) each time you beat him (little to no-hit) he stomps on the turntable and it gets visibly broken each turn -> Cap’n and Cakes tell you to let him hit you -> Sweet gets mad and when you beat him (right before battle) he slams his mallet on his turntable & it breaks
Cks & Cpn: “Sweet, remember your breathing exercises!”
Sweet: “I- I can't! I need-- I need to SMASH THEM!”
(there's a color change, his outfit changes color to something bright and wild)
-> Battle Start -> Immediately upon entering battle Cap’n and Cakes leave the battle box
Cap’n: “We told you to let him hit you a few times”
Cakes: “We’ll be cheering you guys on!”
-> Battle officially starts
_______ Battle: MalletMania (MM!Sweet) is the only one who fights you. K_K and Cap'n just sit and watch/give you tips on how to tire him out.
K_K: Have you tried dodging? Cap'n: His attacks are on beat! Get with the rhythm!
If MM!Sweet's about to beat you he just trips over the weight of the mallet and stays on the ground for a few seconds until you see little "Z Z Z" coming up.
K_K: Awe~ He fell asleep! Cap'n: Thanks! Now we don't have to go out again today!
If you tire him out before he can beat you he'll say something like, "I can't stop now! I need to... I gotta..." and then he'll just fall over.
______ Attacks: Let’s Dance!-- The music sheet lines spin-off of the mallet and into the battle box. You have to avoid incoming music notes by jumping from line to line (like in Muffet's battle in Undertale) Tantrum!-- Slams the mallet around in a circle on the ground many times. This causes debris to fall into the battle box and must be dodged. A Real Hit!-- The mallet appears in the center of the battle box starts spinning in the middle. The spikes shoot out and follow the SOUL around the box, trying to hit it Bass Drop!-- The mallet grows to be comically large as Sweet goes to smash the battle box. But he loses balance and falls over (if this move could actually be done, it's a one-hit kill) / rare chance of him backward and just getting slingshotted into the wall (battle ends when he does this attack) + regular in-game attacks
______
Dialogue Examples:
Cakes: He's harmless! Capn: Yeah! As long as he causes harm!
|
Capn: They're a menace to society Cakes: But they're OUR menace to society
|
Capn: You should let him hit you Cakes: It’d really make their day! |
Cakes: You should... let him get at least one hit in Cap'n: They'll get really off-beat if you don't
|
(In battle)
Sweet: We’re rebels! And rebels break stuff! Susie: YEAH! I LIKE THIS GUY! Ralsei: If you're all rebels why aren't they breaking stuff? Cap’n: Hey! We break stuff! I break hearts! Cakes: I breakdance!
|
Sweet: Just one teeny, tiny little hit? Please, please?
|
Cakes: We believe in you! Cap'n: Who are we cheering for again? Cakes: I thought you knew?
|
Sweet: A hit! A hit! I got a hit!
|
Sweet: It’s no fun if you just stand there!
|
Sweet: Just let me hit you! You're a terrible audience!
|
Sweet: You really wanna see my moves so bad? Fine! Here comes round two!
|
Cakes: Avoid the spikes! Cap'n: I think they know that
|
Sweet: Why are you helping them?!
|
(after the battle, in the shop)
About Sweet:
Sweet: Hey! Don't talk about me like I'm not here! Cap’n: He found this mallet thing and ever since he can't stop smashing stuff Cakes: We have to get a new alarm clock every morning!
|
Sweet: Sorry about trying to smash your bodies into little, tiny pieces. No hard feelings, right?
|
Sweet: You ever get that urge to just break stuff? Like, if you don't you'll just explode?! Like you wanna bite and gnaw and maybe commit arson or- or topple a building with your own hands?! No -> Swt: Oh... Yes/I Changed my Mind (if you answer 'no' first) -> Swt: You get it! You get it! Here, have a special limited edition weapon!
[Acquires 'Majesty Mallet' (applies extra damage when fighting Queen)]

bad hair day!
🍁🛹 nanao taichi
“where is he?!”
sakyo stared down at you, opening the door after waking up to repetitive pounding that nearly shook the whole dorm
you were still in your pajamas and out of breath—did you run over here?
before sakyo could angrily swear at you for making no sense just past midnight, you ducked underneath his arm and escaped around the corner
although some dorm lights were on, most of the rooms were pitch black as expected of it being a school day tomorrow. you were about to sprint into the slightly ajar door of room 105 before omi stepped out, an amused smile greeting you
“taichi’s in the bathroom, if you’re looking for him.” omi gestured towards the shared bathrooms at the end of the hallway, to which you gratefully thanked him and ran off again
(omi looked after you, a smile upon his tired expression. “kids these days.” omi yawned, heading back into his dorms and shutting the door softly behind him)
you didn’t take as much consideration into your actions before you slid into the communal bathroom, slamming the door behind you with uncontrollable force. you leaned against it, panting as you finally saw him
nanao taichi was sitting near the sink with three (3) boxes of random hair dye on the counters, very obviously confused and distressed
“taichi, what’s the emergency?!”
“my hair dye isn’t the right shade!”
“... are you serious?”
this was it. it was hair–dye day
except this time, it wouldn’t be just taichi’s hair transformation—you were getting a new look, too!
how did you get yourself into this mess exactly? maybe sleepily reading an urgent message from your best friend late at night declaring he was having an “emergency” wasn’t a good idea after all...
there was something about taichi’s big puppy eyes that couldn’t make you say no despite all your frustration, so here you were, tiredly following an overexcited boy down the aisles of the local convenience store
did i mention it was way too late? on a school day, by the way? i didn’t, well, now you know!
“taichi,” you called out, rubbing the sleepiness from your eyes and tried not to wince at the bright led lights of the display. taichi barely paid attention, humming an incoherent answer as he browsed the rainbow shelf of hair dyes in front of him
“don’t you think... we should wait until tomorrow?” taichi seemed to process your words a moment late, because he turned towards you, bewildered as if you were the crazy one
yeah, you were crazy. taichi definitely wasn’t holding three wildly different boxes of hair dye and debating between all of them. he also definitely didn’t mislead you into thinking something happened when all he had was s bad hair day. you knew you had to intervene or else his usual red would become kazunari’s palette
“tomorrow? what’s wrong with now?”
“it’s almost midnight, we have school in nearly seven hours, and i know for a fact you didn’t do your homework.”
(taichi flinched at that and you were unsatisfied to see you were right, as always)
“i know that, but!—” “it’s midnight.” “hey, new day, new you, right?” “we have school in a few hours.” “think of how cool you’ll be showing up with dyed hair!” “you have homework.”
“i know, i know,” taichi shrugged, holding the boxes up to his line of sight with serious consideration as he glanced at you. with one look at your tiredness, taichi put the red cart down and completely faced you, putting his hands on your shoulders with a pout
“come on, don’t be like that!” taichi whined, nearly stomping his feet when you just huffed and looked away. jumping so he stayed in your view, it was like a pet wanting attention and using its cuteness as its charm
“hey, hey, look at me, please~?” taichi dragged out, moving his hands so they cupped your cheeks. he made you look at him and all you saw was a backwards baseball cap on a head of nearly half black hair and wide cyan eyes. he looked fully awake, you wondered where his infectious energy came from
“turn that frown, upside down!” taichi turned the corners of your lips up with his pointer fingers, making you automatically smile with the way his giggle got louder. “that’s my best friend!” taichi patted your cheeks again and bounced back down to his heels, rocking back and forth on his worn down sneakers
“look at us! we’re two high schoolers about to make an impulsive decision! nothing could go wrong!” taichi laughed and although there were a million things that could’ve gone wrong, you just sighed with a smile on your face
“you’re right.” you said even if he wasn’t. taichi just picked the cart back up and tilted his head towards the dyes, asking for your opinion on what colors you liked
you chose red, too. when taichi questioned why curiously, you patted his head and responded with, “so we can match!”. the boxes of hair dye you both bought were red just like taichi’s face when you answered honestly
sneaking back into the bathroom to avoid the “you have school” lecture from a very pissed off sakyo who still couldn’t go back to sleep, you and taichi failed at hushed whispers. everything felt like a joke and it didn’t exactly help taichi found everything you did hilarious and comical
setting down the boxes like it was second nature, taichi let out a sound of excitement at the colors. even if you were running on little to no sleep, you felt the same with the adrenaline of looking like a new person in just a few hours
“we’re gonna look so cool!” taichi squealed, taking his time mixing the dye color with the bowl and brush quickly
you sat on the sink counter, swinging your legs as taichi leaned onto the surface next to you, rambling away about how popular red was this season and how all the students will fall in love with his trendiness
used to your friend’s lovesick, hopeless romantic antics, you fondly rolled your eyes as you stretched, stifling a yawn
“is that why you decided to dye your hair tonight?”
“... maybe. there was advice that having perfext roots would attract any woman in my favorite love advice column!”
“...” “do you think people will like my hair?” “they might think we’re a couple since we’re matching.”
taichi suddenly stopped mixing, staring at the bowl wide eyed at the red dye. you were about to ask what happened, before taichi nervously laughed and looked towards the ground
“u–us? a couple?! no way...” taichi blurted out, avoiding your eyes as he began mixing even faster
“do you want me to change my color then—?” you cautiously started, about to change your mind before taichi interrupted hastily, almost knocking the other boxes over by waving his gloved hands
“no! i mean, haha... no, no, it’s fine! don’t worry about it!” taichi laughed so you slowly nodded, not buying it but deciding to go with the flow anyways. you were too tired to think about it too hard
you both unanimously agreed that taichi would dye your hair first. after all, he had more experience doing this by himself until you came along
one thing though, you didn’t want to ruin your pajama shirt. after rummaging through his closet quietly, you felt a t–shirt land on your head and heard a victorious laugh from the doorway
lifting the shirt, you recognized the one–eyed monster graphic design on the front, its tongue sticking out with some graffiti text above its head
“are you sure? you always wear this one?” you hesitated to take it before taichi forced it back into your hands, his expression easy and humorous
“take it, it’ll look better on you, anyways.” taichi casually said and you wondered how many smooth pick up lines he’s been reading. but, one look at his light smile and you could tell he genuinely meant it
returning back into the bathroom wearing a black t–shirt, you had changed into his t–shirt as well. while you were making sure all the dyes were separated to avoid any accidents, you barely noticed taichi stop dead in his tracks
(how come you looked so... good, in his t–shirt? maybe, he should give you his clothes more often... taichi gulped, wondering why he was suddenly feeling this way. it must’ve been the lack of sleep, the tiredness of staying up past his usual bedtime, that’s all!)
“are you ready for the best hair day ever?”
unexpectedly, taichi was quiet for the next hour or so. you could tell from the way he carefully applied just the right amount on your roots to how he knew the time on the box without even looking
maybe it was the way neither of you had proper sleep schedules, but you nearly fell asleep when taichi began combing your hair. after letting it develop, taichi began evenly distributing the red color while humming a popular pop song from his playlist in the background
you didn’t know when you dozed off, but you woke up to a flash of a camera and heard taichi’s snickers right in front of you. rubbing your eyes, you sat up straighter to notice a plastic bag was wrapped around your hair with an empty bowl of red dye discarded in the sink
“morning, sleepyhead~!” taichi greeted way too happily at this hour, making you groan as you stood up. “you didn’t sleep, taichi?” you wondered out loud, noticing how he scrolled through his phone aimlessly with a nonchalant sound
“yawn—i mean! i’m not even tired, gotta wait for your timer to go off to rinse your hair!” (it was his rule that he was always the last person to sleep if he was with you) taichi proudly held up his phone and showed you the screen, as if you could see it from there
(maybe if you could, you would’ve prevented the disaster about to occur in the very near future)
“your turn, puppy. come over here.” you stretched and taichi squealed, running over just to nearly knock over the chair from excitement. taichi always liked doing things with you, and you pampering him made him feel a lot happier than he’d like to admit
“can you stay still?” “i’m trying~! geez, so mean first thing in the morning... uuh...” “awww come on, don’t act like a kicked puppy, taichi!” “woof...”
it was the saddest bark you’ve ever heard. you smiled even if taichi was squirming in his seat and pet his dry hair, your best friend automatically leaning into your touch with a content sigh as he closed his eyes. oh, finally! taichi went still, letting you start the dye process quickly
just like you, taichi was on the verge of staying awake and falling asleep. it was nice to have someone taking care of you like a little kid, not to mention how neither of you have slept for more than half a hour at time. as you applied the rest and making sure all the sections were even, taichi stirred in his sleep with a cute yawn again
“i’m cool, right?” taichi mumbled, seemingly getting closer and closer to snoring. you held back a snicker, nodding your head as you kept going with the dye. for your first time, it wasn’t even that bad
“yes, of course. you’re the coolest boy at o high, taichi.” you reassured truthfully, to which taichi pouted like a kid, crossing his arms and leaning his head back. you made sure none of the dye dripped off before you started painting the bright red on again
“that’s not true... juza and tenma go to o high... they’re so popular, everyone loves them.” taichi added on sadly, but you knew he meant it and it wasn’t just fishing for compliments. wondering why a boy as amazing as taichi would have an inferiorty complex, you frowned and tried to focus on applying the dye
“well, i think you’re the coolest to me, then. after all, juza and tenma don’t have this cool red hair!” you almost ruffled his hair but stopped, knowing it’d mess up the part. taichi must’ve sensed you were about to do so, because he let out a loud, sudden laugh with a big smile
“hehe, you’re the coolest to me, too!” taichi trailed off into a low voice, about to fall asleep for good. you wrapped his head to make sure the hair stayed in place, satisfied with your hard work and dedication to your best friend’s appearance
“do you say that to everyone you meet?” you joked, but taichi just shook his head vigirously, entering sleepy puppy mode anyways
“no, just you, you know why~?”
“why?”
“‘cause... i like y...”
taichi snored, his head falling lower as he fell asleep for good. you didn’t even process it, deciding to take the seat next to him without checking the time
time to get some shut eye...
you slowly woke up, realizing that you were now laying your head on top of taichi’s. he was almost drooling on your shoulder, even breaths leaving his lips as he continued sleeping. you lifted your head to look around for the reason why you woke up, until you noticed the constant ringing of taichi’s phone on the sink counter
“puppy, wake up, it’s time to rinse our hair.” you pushed taichi off, automatically waking him up as he rapidly blinked, trying to focus his blurry vision as he yawned
“... has the sun always been up?”
you froze, staring at taichi’s casual expression before it morphed into shock, his wide eyes finding yours with urgency. don’t tell me...
you rushed off the chair, nearly hitting it to the ground as you grabbed taichi’s vibrating phone, looking at the screen. instead of a timer for rinsing, it was labeled for starting the school day
“taichi.” you said, slowly turning to see him staring back at you. the realization dawned upon both of you severely. “we have school in less than a hour.”
mankai bathrooms were always chaotic in the morning, especially with twenty (20) plus boys all sharing one space. yet, today might’ve been the worst day to use the bathroom yet
you and taichi immediately began cleaning up and rinsing your hair at the same time, losing your minds over the lack of time as you two knew both your hair could not be saved
“what if i’m not cool anymore?!”
“can we focus on going to school on time?”
(banri and juza were exchanging their usual harsh morning greetings to each other, walking side by side to the bathroom only to hear taichi’s pierching shriek and your immediate scream back. they shared a look before collectively going back to their room, not wanting to know. it was the first thing they agreed upon in a while)
taichi dashed out of the bathroom with half a hour to spare, quickly putting on his uniform on without noticing omi who stood by the door, holding onto taichi’s backpack with an amused glint to his eyes
when taichi finally found his o high dark green blazer and pants (his dress shirt buttons were mismatched, but that wasn’t important), he was about to run right past omi before omi put his arm out, stopping taichi from leaving
“forgetting something?” omi held out taichi’s backpack with a packed lunch, making taichi exhale with relief as he took it gratefully. “omi, you’re the best ever!”
omi instead shook his head and crossed his arms, gesturing towards the bathroom where you were still cleaning up the red mess
“no, they’re the best. make sure you tell them that.” omi scolded gently, ruffling taichi’s hair but suddenly narrowing his eyes, looking the teen up and down with a confused look
“huh...? didn’t you dye your hair, why isn’t it that red?”
“don’t remind me, omi!”
(fun fact: leaving hair dye on for longer than 45 minutes will in fact, make the color much darker than intended)
(also... dry hair...)
you luckily brought your uniform, thinking the big emergency would require a sleepover. you stepped out of the bathroom and apologized to the bewildered and incredulous line that formed outside, rushing off to find taichi shoving a piece of bread in his mouth
“here! catch!” you assumed taichi tried to say, because his words were muffled as he threw you something from the kitchen. you caught it with ease, putting it in your pocket as you and taichi said goodbye to everyone in the dorms
you two didn’t even bother addressing why taichi’s hair was many shades darker and why yours was red as well. you two just left and prayed to whoever was listening you’d make it to school on time... or else
half way through making it out the door, you and taichi finally caught each other’s eyes and burst into laughter, nearly falling onto each other in the middle of the sidewalk like a bunch of weirdos
“yo! look at our hair!” taichi spluttered out, reaching up to touch your now red hair. you wheezed, trying to not cry from the sheer audacity of the strange situation at hand
“dude, look at your hair! it’s even darker!” you laughed and even though his bright red hair was apart of his identity, taichi couldn’t stop laughing just because he went through it with you
“am i still cool?”
“definitely, even cooler now, i think.”
the laughter died down and taichi wrapped his arm around your shoulder, grinning like there was no tomorrow
“you’re the best. i’m so lucky to have you.”
you suddenly remembered something you didn’t respond to just mere hours ago, and figured it was better late than never
“i like you, too.”
when taichi overcame his visible shock and multiple “are you serious?! don’t play with my feelings like that!” and figuring out you were being honest, he slipped his hand into yours with a visible jump to his step as you two walked to school
even if he wore gloves, his hands were still somewhat stained red from the hair dye that started it all
(“did you do the homework this morning?”)
(“... we had homework?”)
(“oh, taichi...”)

★ in the rain | j.ww
Tumblr media
▰ genre: angst + fluff in the end (happy ending)
▰ word count: 1902
▰ synopsis: you find wonwoo in the rain after not seeing him for a while, hoping to finally tell him that you got engaged, but he painstakingly tells you that he's in love with you + female! reader i think + pam and jim! dynamic
▰ notes: im not super happy with the ending at all but uhhhh here u go. if anyone wants me to drop the angst / no happy ending lmk hehe + ALSO!! you are very much more than welcome to drop requests and asks in my ask thing :3
Tumblr media
There he stood in the rain. After you had ran up to him, he remained in his position, in his posture, in his steps. When he looked at you, there was something behind his eyes. The night consumed the usual soft color of his expression. Now, he was just painted in lead and you almost wanted to cough on it, as if there was smoke billowing up your respiratory system.
"Wonwoo?" You called out, your smile dropping and that of your grip on the umbrella but you remembered what was important.
His face still hadn't changed. You wished that he would've at least worn his dark gray rain coat so that at least would've made his image more comical and that it could provide comedic relief. His eyebrows weren't even as dropped as they typically were; there was something about the fine lines of muscle on his face that were taut and tense, like they were holding something back.
"What's-what's wrong?" The rain continued falling, not even in a characteristic way that it had upon the moods of the showers. "What did I do? What did I do? You-you just stopped answering my texts, m-m-my-my calls. I just wanted to say hello and see if you were —"
"Why didn't you tell me you had set your wedding day, Y/N?"
Then, the muscles stretched a little bit, revealing the most raw source of heartbreak you had never thought could exist. Those strokes of black that comprised his eyebrows furrowed together in a worry, painstakingly quivering just a few degrees, and worst of all, his eyes began to mirror the dynamic of the night.
He bit back a hiccupy sob while trying to smile. A wave of heat blanketed you from head to toe in a frenzy, the warmth barely missing your eyes to gather tears.
"I-I..." why did his heart break? Why was he so upset? Was it because you simply hadn't told him? You had just announced it, barely coming to the decision just a day before. Your best friend, Wonwoo, was breaking at the seams, but for what?
"What happened?" You reached out, now gripping his wrist that remained at his rib. He just felt like ice, heavy and growing colder in terms of proximity.
Wonwoo laughed halfheartedly, sniffling, as you desperately looked up at him, searching, searching, searching his eyes for something. He hesitantly drew his other hand to cup your face, so lightly you would've mistaken the touch for your hair.
"You seriously don't know?" He pressed his thumb into the apple of your cheek, rubbing one of your free streaking tears into your supple flesh.
You shook your head vigorously. Could you have possibly set your wedding date on a day that was completely inconvenient for him? Could you have overlooked one of your friendship anniversaries? Surely, he couldn't have been this upset simply because he wasn't the first to be told. You've known him for years and that was unlikely.
He just kept smiling as the rain seemed to seep through in between the mesh of both of your umbrellas, and if you moved your chin just a a few inches, it looked as if Wonwoo's face was raining, too: breaking away with the storm. You just wanted it to stop. This had to end. But why had it started? He just started ignoring you out of the blue, the most uncharacteristic moves he's ever pulled. This wasn't him. What was it? (But you knew...)
"God, Y/N," he tipped his head back, trying to steady what seemed like shallow breaths, but in reality, he just didn't want to look at the gleaming metal that was now wrapped around your lovely, nimble finger.
"Wonwoo!" You cried out, a crash of thunder resonating just a few miles off. He looked back down. The rain filled in the silence between you two but it proved to be as brief as much as you hadn't wanted it to be.
He smiled through the pain.
"You're such an idiot, God," he muttered and for a second, you thought that things would be back to normal. "I..."
"Yes-yes? What?" Your face ached from worry, the evaporation flitting all around you like something out of anime. "Tell me please, so I can just make things better. I'll let you read to me that sappy book I hate! I-I-I'll do any —"
"I'm in love with you, Y/N," his eyes sparkled in the darkest way possible and whatever you had possibly opened your mouth to say no longer had meaning. You blinked. All you could do was blink dumbly. "I-I don't-I'm just-I...I'm sorry. I know that I should've told you sooner. I just needed you to hear it. It's bad timing, I know. I know."
Your mouth simply went agape as a rush of a thousand emotions infiltrated you.
"What? Why?" You muttered out of instinct because of the confusion. He laughed again, a bitter one this time, and blinked a few tears from his sparkling eyes.
Of course, realizing everything, realizing the grand scheme of all that had occurred since you had even graduated with Wonwoo, ever since you had even first met him, it all hit you with a pang of something.
Sure, you had been engaged to Yeongsu, your sweetheart from undergraduate school, who didn't always treat you sweet, but you and him just had a foundation. He and you had been together for many years, despite his inability to understand you sometimes and so what that he didn't pursue you; you thought love was like that. Wasn't it supposed to be?
Before you knew, your vision grew blurry and warmth streamed down your cheeks in thin ribbons. Wonwoo's face pained at the sight as soon as you blinked through.
"I don't know what to do or say, W-Wonwoo. What do you expect me to say?" You choked. The street had quieted down so now you had no choice but to hear yourself and him, breaking down.
His lips pursed, tightening slowly into a frown.
"I know, I know. It's selfish of me, but I just wanted you to know, okay? Okay?" His voice broke with the final word and as did the gate that had been keeping his own years at bay. You nodded grimly in return because a part of you seemed to crumble with his composure.
"What, is this your goodbye or something?" You coughed between your intakes of breath. He looked up into the ceiling of his umbrella before meeting your eyes once again.
"I'm...going back to Changwon...on the fourteenth of June. I don't know how long I'm staying either." He breathed. Your wedding would be set on the exact same day, only you would be on the opposite side of the country.
The rain came back and as did your misery.
He loved you. He loves you. He loved you. He loves you.
Your one and only confidant, your best friend, your comforter, your protecter, your shoulder to cry on, your reason to laugh and smile, your dork, Wonwoo. He was going to leave. Worse, you were going to leave him just the same. Was this goodbye to your friendship?
"Well, I..." you managed out of a broken cry. "I can't ask you to stay because that's selfish of me but we're-we're past that now," Wonwoo sniffled and leaned closer to you, which he typically did to listen to whatever you had to say, considering his great height. "And I know our friendship is more important than anything."
"Please don't do that. I don't want that. I want to be more than that." He pleaded in that constantly calm voice of his.
"Wonwoo," you mirrored his own desperation, reaching to tug his sleeve tightly into your fists. He used his other hand to rub the loose tears into your cheeks, moving over your nose as his bottom lip trembled. "Wonwoo..."
And he paused his motions, meeting your eyes again. Everything suddenly terrified you because you had no clue what would be the last thing you two would do in this moment. God knew even if you would see each other again. Your futures were locked, weren't they? You felt powerless but you had the key. Nonetheless, the guilt had you beginning to tremble.
Your guesses about what would fill in this now empty gap between the two of you was fulfilled when Wonwoo just dove in. His lips collided with yours and you just buckled into yourself, his arms embracing you in the right moment to catch you. It was like getting a power up from a game. The warmth that you felt was unrelenting. It was everything... you had dreamt of. The kiss continued, shifted, proceeded, evolved, but eventually, it came to a halt as you felt a few stray tear drops hit your skin that weren't yours.
When you pulled away, Wonwoo smiled painfully, hesitantly meeting your eyes. You still were in shock.
He held your hand now loosely. Wonwoo was ready to let go, his fingers inching away by degrees, and you could feel your heart dropping by the second. He was ready to let go of you and of it all, but you weren't...
"I-I love you, too," you cried, wanting to unravel into sobs as his eyes widened in that adorable way that they always did when in shock. He tightened his grasp around you. "Wonwon, I'm the one who's been selfish. I'm the one who's done you wrong. I'm the one who is in the wrong, I'm the one..."
He moved in again, his lips just above yours for another kiss, which scared you, but instead, he took gentle swipes across your face. You had missed out on all this just because of your own stupidity.
"It's okay, it's okay. Don't say that," he muttered, his voice above the pitter patter of the rain shower. "Don't..."
He left his sentence unfinished, now resting his forehead against yours with his hands brushing your stray tears away.
"I love you, Wonwoo," you pleaded. "But, what can I do?"
The answer was obvious to you, but you offered an alternative.
"Can...can we run away together?" You muttered. Wonwoo cupped your cheek, snorting but still mustering a sweet, sad smile.
"I wouldn't want to do that to you, Y/N. I-I should've just kept this to myself. You're supposed to get married and finally have that dream wedding and that level of domestic bliss that you've wanted. I can't take it away."
You lifted yourself on the balls of your feet to rub your forehead against his, pulling him down with you to make it work.
"But, Wonwoo, you can give that all to me," he pulled away gently to look down at you. "I want to be with you forever."
"Forever?" His voice tripped in pitch.
"Forever." With that, you grinned again before he wanted to pull in for another kiss.
If yours and his future only took a few steps, why not take them? Why stay quiet and unhappy? You shouldn't settle. You should've never settled.
"Wait," he pulled back from your reddening lips. "Can I take you out on a date first?"
"Of course," you smiled against his. "Tomorrow." You chuckled, lightly punching him, but nodding nonetheless.
"Tomorrow, for sure."

Little late getting to these -- that's fully the fault of a class project I spent all of Monday/Tuesday and most of Wednesday working on -- but I finished my project and wrote up some long replies to these!
(Apologies for any funny formatting -- I'm trying out the beta for the new post editor!)
Tumblr media
Absolutely not.
Tumblr media
Nope! There are a few people who do know (other guides Andrew's met before, the Dryad, and I'd imagine the Witch Doctor knows something's up even if he doesn't know why), but none of them live in Purity Town proper, and the Dryad and Witch Doctor aren't the kind to participate in rumors or spread what isn't theirs to share. The old man is also aware just because he and Andrew have talked about their curses, but he's 1) not currently in town and 2) not going to share even if he were.
Most folks don't know much about Andrew in general; Becca probably knows the most out of the townsfolk, knowing a little bit about his family and where he's from (he has some pretty specific skills as a hunter that betray this, but he doesn't talk about his exact town of birth), but no specifics and certainly not time periods.
Andrew is good at keeping things quiet; he has to be.
Tumblr media
I would actually appreciate if you didn't post to Pinterest -- usually I'm fine with people reposting with credit (several of the things I've posted to my DeviantArt have found their way to Instagram, for example) but Pinterest has something of a reputation for stolen art (things being reposted from another Pinterest post without credit this time, or credit being hard to view for users not logged in or just viewing through Google). So reposting elsewhere is fine (though if you repost to Reddit or Instagram, tag me at u/Ariibees or @Ariibees)! I'd just prefer my works stay off of Pinterest.

The terminology related to The Guide/Andrew/The Guardian/The World’s Core/The WoF is all confusing because on some level, they’re all the same being. Kind of like trying to talk about Jekyll and Hyde -- same guy, different looks/actions, haha.
For all intents and purposes, references to the WoF being the barrier/core/whatever behind or within which the spirits of light and dark are contained is equivalent to saying “these spirits are held trapped by the magic of the Guardian, who when summoned appears as the WoF.” I do break slightly from the official lore in how the WoF/Guardian/thing holding back these spirits works (mostly because I don’t really like the idea that the Hallow is a “temporary guardian” or whatever), but the basic concept of “these are trapped by [thing that makes up the WoF]” remains unchanged.

If “loony cultist” is a reference to something, I’m so sorry, but I’m lost on it. If you’re just talking about the lunatic cultist in a funny way, then yes, they’re in here as a very plot-significant character!
Tumblr media
I had to google what meme you were talking about, but it did make me laugh.
Andrew’s most annoyed by the nickname because people do like to call him Guide, and for someone who’s dedicated his whole life to his role, it can get tiring. He doesn’t really *mind* being called Guide -- it’s fine, that’s what he is and as long as people are respectful of his job he’ll take what he can get -- but at the same time, he’d like for people to stop thinking “Aah! Monster!” or “Weird academic know-it-all” and just...treat him like a normal person sometimes. So he fights to be called Andrew. And...Malik comes along and gives him a nickname that he doesn’t like and doesn’t allow others to use, save for maybe a small group of people of which Malik is not a part. So, not cool, man!

People love to overcomplicate explaining shading/lighting, and if you wanted to you could certainly go on and on about reflections of light off the ground and shading colors and all sorts of things, but as I’m writing this at 1 AM I don’t really care to.
If you really want to get into shading, I see nice ones on DeviantArt or Tumblr from time to time, or you can always watch a YouTube video on it. Really, though, just keep at it, think about how the shadows should look and work, and you'll get better at it eventually and pick up new ideas on how it all works. (And this is coming from someone who is new to making comics and actually started as a painter.)
Purity Town’s shading comes down to this: simplicity. As much as I’d love to spend hours and hours redrawing the panels I don’t like and carefully shading every fold of fabric and painting detailed backgrounds, I’m a full-time college student and will be working full-time over the summer -- I don’t have the time. So, I cut corners: I reuse backgrounds or use brushes (see: bricks, trees, clouds) that make certain details easier, and I try not to obsess too much over panels I’m not fully happy with. Shadows go where they feel right, and light on the opposite side.
For shading, this comes down to making things quick and easy. For these last few pages, character shading/lighting has only been five layers. One hard light layer for the bluer soft shadows, one overlay layer for darker soft shadows, one linear burn layer for hard shadows, one soft light layer for soft lighting, and one overlay layer for hard lighting. I’ll often also make use of glow dodge layers for lighting, or change the color balance or add more hard/soft light layers if there’s a very heavy color filter on the scene (such as a celestial event, blood moon, or outdoors at night).
Using all the different layer types is essentially a cheat code to fancier lighting -- don’t want to use flat black? Boom, hard light or overlay or burn will give you colored shadows. Want to make your light brighter? Glow dodge will make it burn your retinas.
Sorry that this isn’t a very comprehensive guide, but in my mind, shading and lighting is really something that you pick up over time and it’s hard to sit down and write a guide for it without making it into a massive essay on art theory that I don't even know proper terminology for because I'm not an art student. Of course with some googling you’ll find *proper* guides for this sort of thing from art majors and the likes, and those can be super helpful and technical! But for Purity Town, I just sort of go with what feels right and what's easy to replicate.

Firstly, I’m happy to hear you’re liking the comic!
Secondly, those buttons are actually there due to the theme! (For those on mobile who can’t see it, I have the theme set to only display on desktop as I prefer the current mobile layout on phone.) I’m using the simple webcomic theme (a quick Google should tell you how to install it for yourself) -- except I’m not actually using it for the webcomic features; rather, it’s a case of “this is the most simple, nice-looking non-default theme I could find.”
The previous/next buttons are added by the theme with the intent that the blog is being used as a typical webcomic website, with nothing but comic pages being posted. However, I post asks and other art here too, and I do so with the intent that people looking at #Terraria or their dashboards in general will see it. So...I use html formatting to make the first/previous/next/last links, along with an index and chapter-by-chapter viewing (using /tagged/chapter##/chrono) so that no matter where you’re coming from, you can still navigate just the pages!
If you want to add just the previous/next buttons, I can’t really help you -- web development is not my area of study in the slightest. But you can check out the theme that they come from and if you want to install only them, you can surely find a tutorial on it somewhere!
(As a side note, the comments section is not from the theme, it’s from a site called Disqus. I don’t expect many people, if anyone, to leave comments, but since I link back to this site a lot and many folks don’t have Tumblr accounts, it’s an option I like to make available.)

Hiya! My hike was pretty nice; it was a short and easy one, but that was quite appreciated as the trail is unmaintained from November to April, and the trail was covered in fallen trees and quite rocky. Still had fun, though!
And for backgrounds, it depends! For indoors scenes (or outdoors scenes with buildings) I don’t tend to use references, outside of looking up things like “which side of a door is the handle on.” I will, however, integrate real-life textures (see: the quilt and rug in Guide’s house, the wood walls on the building in the background of this week’s page), and paint over paintings from the Terraria wiki.
For outdoors scenes, for simple backgrounds (such as foliage-heavy) ones, I typically don’t need references. I like the difference between detailed, lined indoor/man-made object scenes vs. painted, messy outdoor scenes. But for things like mountains, I do sometimes look up references to help with color choices and the likes.
The town’s layout is a bit strange in that depending on the scene, the background could be drastically different. One side of town faces more mountainside, one side faces the orchards/open hillside, and the other two sides face various degrees of open space and more mountainside/forest. References taken on top of mountains are helpful to get an idea of what degree of foliage I should include between the characters and the sky.
Though this is very specific to the town of Purity -- other towns/villages will have significantly different-looking backgrounds, even the foliage-heavy ones.
That said, what's even more helpful than looking at photos is looking at paintings. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is really good for getting an idea of how to draw grasslands and distant mountains, plus Studio Ghibli movies in general!

Please watch this if anyone crushed your dreams or never believed in you, if you ever felt lost and still do... Lord please help me find my purpose my calling my dreams , if you don't even know who you are bc you lost yourself or sense of self to someone or to an external source and in silence you can't sit with the your own self bc you are not connected with yourself within and so confused as to do next... I am ADHD . I was on second in about to skip it to distract myself with something else and for some reason I watched and laughed and I've been in a rut in writing and being in touch with my own soul with the inner child I suppressed and was repressed bc I was the black sheep, the misunderstood, the outcast, I too have a love for Albert Einstein, I too have a learning disability and recently lost my voice to domestic violence for 15 yrs and I made someone my everything and now left with nothing, and I see why I needed to broken hearted by a twisted mind bc now I free to explore and discover what my potential can be, and no wonder i was delusional bc I am truth seeker and I felt always uncomfortable, anxious and it's bc I was not allowed to be or able to express myself the authentic person I am.
" I used to wait for the newspaper, to wait for my dad to finish and so I can then cut out the funny comics like Garfield the cat and I used to laugh and then I ventured in to drawing " I drew Garfield and was so proud of it and my father said " you need to practice more it it's that good "
Little did he know: today this day he has no clue how that one sentence, killed and ahattwred my drive and imagination to dream; I believe of what Steve Harvey Said. Education isn't everything even though society tells us so, but obviously with what's been happening in the present time, I am glad I'm that black sheep of the family bc now I have the opportunity to change my ancestry, and tell my daughter with true ethusiam that her artwork is amazing and I encourage her to color outside the lines even though as we color together as an adult: me drawing inside the lines and my 4 year old just scribbling all over th page with colors out of random and triggered my OCD & in that moment I almost did something to her by words is killing her will to learn and have fun by almost " correcting " her to " color inside the lines and use the accurate colors " smh. In that moment as I had a flashback and I never drew again and even if I did doodle I would never show it to anyone in fear of it not being accepted but again Im thankful For being misunderstood bc after watching this video and diving deep of soul searching; I realized too, I am not supposed to fit in, it's the rebels without a cause that change the world but are labeled and judged as we are standing in line waiting for or prescription meds by a phyaiciatrist who has seen you since 18 and yet being now (--) of age still doesn't know your name. Maybe I was crazy for doing the same things expecting different results by changing myself externally to be accepted by people who I cared for and didn't aswell, now I know why age of 9. I want to die ? Nothing is more miserable than holding in your ability to express urself in any format bc I was made to believe anything I did or said was silly or stupid. I didnt know my root of all the circumstances and consequences of those I am suffering and surviving at the same time that I AM WORTHY, if it was one thing to note : ( I was the sperm tadpole to make it in the egg first ?) ;) I know this is all over the place but I usually would select-all-copy+paste to my UNSENT/UNSEEN MESSAGES / Or ADHS : verbal vomit. But fuck it. It is what it is. HAVING SUCH A MIND FULLY purging of thoughts and ideas that were repressed aswell as the insecurity and self conscious Ness that led to disablitating social anxiety which I proud I can even admit that on a social media sites bc most of mine is of Albert Einstein image and everything set to private bc thinking I would be a burden to " friends" / family/ strangers....I want to be an advocate for ADHD AND hopefully change the damn abrievation to EFDD. Just remember , I'm aware I'm not always be on the same page as the rest. (Ha! Or even the same chapter as someone for my age "/ who makes these unofficial societal rules that is bullshit to its finest ) if you made to this point well you are ADHD yourself and can relate or something resonated with you to intrigue your interest, my phone is so hot I think it's about to explore or possibly crash with my luck, but I just want to say, think or don't think outside the box, color within or outside the lones, it really just doesn't matter after all we have to side of the brain the the left and the right? No more hiding or fear of decideding! JUST BE U, Or else once by THE TIME U figure out what you want or who you want to be IN life or what ur dreams are; You already be six feet under. So disregard into the COVID-19 But with all respect and rip to all and their loved ones but get off your phone & go climb a tree. We are th wild ones, the free spirits and the light workers or the world to help / heal other of humanity's wounds, let's all disagree to agree that even though I will most likely continue to be on my phone after I post, I'm just going to to say at least I can feel free to speak my truth and can care less if this makes sense or has many grammertical errors or no commas lol. When I press that blue post button just know I for once was able to exhale.....
